The John LYST household was enumerated in the 1860 and 1880 census of Pipecreek Twp., Madison Co., IN. John was my maternal 3rd great-granduncle, married to Sarah Wilson LAMBERTSON. I have not yet searched for this family in the 1870 census.

John was listed in 1860 as being a farmer, aged 30, born in Indiana, living next door to his father, John LYST Sr. His personal estate was valued at $250. His wife, Sarah, was listed as age 24, born in Indiana. Their children listed were Millard, aged 4; Francis, aged 3; and Mary, aged 10 months.

In the 1880 census, the family was living in the village of Elwood, and John's occupation was listed as a brick mason. He had been unemployed for 4 months during the census year. His father was listed as being born in New Jersey and his mother in Pennsylvania. Sarah was listed as aged 43, born in New Jersey with both parents being born in New Jersey as well. Their children listed were Francis D., aged 23 born Ohio; Samuel, aged 18 born Indiana; Jane, aged 16 born Indiana; John, aged 8 born Indiana; and Charley, aged 5 born in Indiana. Francis' occupation was listed as an engineer.

The William LOOFBURROW family was enumerated in the 1920 census of Ord, Valley Co., NE. Willam was married to Martha Julesa LEMASTERS, daughter of Luman Walker and Nancy (YOUNG) LEMASTERS.

William was listed as a retired farmer, aged 69, born in Indiana with both parents being born in Ohio. Other sources I have shows his birthplace as Darke Co., OH. Martha was listed as a housewife, age 68, born in Ohio with father born in West Virginia and mother born in Ohio.

Their son, William C., aged 31, was living with them as well as a single male. His occupation was given as that of a lawyer.

The Jacob LEWIS family appears in the 1880 census of Jefferson Twp., Huntington Co., IN. Jacob was my wife's maternal 2nd-great grandfather, the son of Solomon and Margaret (RHINEHART) LEWIS.

Jacob is a farmer with his second wife, Mary keeping house. They have a new son, Amberson, who was born October of the census year. Jacob's son from his first marriage, Hollace E. was also listed.

Both Jacob and Mary were born in Indiana; with Jacob's father being born in Ohio and his mother in Indiana. Mary's father was listed as being born in South Carolina and her mother from Kentucky.

The Solomon LEWIS family was enumerated in the 1860 & 1870 census of Jefferson Twp., Huntington Co., IN. Solomon was my wife 's maternal 3rd-great grandfather, the son of Nathaniel and Nancy Ann (SNIDER) LEWIS.

Solomon's occupation was that of a farmer, with a real estate valued at $4000 in 1860 and $8000 in 1870; as well as a personal estate valued at $800 in 1860 and $1380 in 1870. The 1870 census indicated that both Solomon and wife Margaret could not write, and Margaret could not read.

The 1860 census listed Margaret's birthplace as Indiana and the 1870 listed her birthplace as Ohio. Other sources state that she was born in Henry Co., IN.

By 1870, daughter's Christina and Isabella were married and listed with their own families.

The Samuel LEWIS family was enumerated in the 1860 & 1870 census of Richland Twp., Miami Co., IN. Samuel was my wife's maternal third-great granduncle, the son of Nathaniel and Nancy Ann (SNIDER) LEWIS.

Samuel was a farmer with a real estate value of $6500 in 1860 and a personal estate valued at $1500. By 1870, his real estate was valued at $8000 and his personal estate was valued at $2500. Samuel was born in Ohio, while his wife Mary was born in Virginia. All of their children were born in Indiana.

Son Aaron was living next door by 1870, and eldest daughter Nancy was still living at home at age 27 in the 1870 census. All of the children had attended school within the year.

The Nathaniel LEWIS family appears in the 1870 census of Jackson Twp., Hamilton Co., IN. Nathaniel was the son of Nathaniel and Nancy (SNIDER) LEWIS.

Nathaniel's occupation was given as a farmer, and the value of his real estate was $2000 and the value of his personal estate was $400. He was married to his second wife, Nancy ZOOK at the time. Nancy was born circa 1830 in Pennsylvania. Nathaniel had been married previously to her sister, Mary.

Marietta Lewis family - Wabash Co., IN

The widow Marietta LEWIS appears in the 1900 census of Lagro Twp., Wabash Co., IN. Marietta was my wife's maternal 2nd-great grandmother, the widow of Jacob LEWIS and the daughter of Robert and Sarah (CYROLE) COOK.

Marietta's occupation was not given, but her son Amberson, was listed as a farm laborer. Marietta stated that her father was born in North Carolina and her mother in Pennsylvania, which conflicts with data from the 1860 census, where her father was listed as being from South Carolina and her mother from Kentucky. Marietta's husband, Jacob LEWIS, had passed away on April 22, 1898 in Lancaster, Huntington Co., IN.

Listed with Marietta were her son Amberson, aged 20; Wilford, aged 17; Lawrence S., aged 15; and Everett, aged 4. Daughter Elleiny was not listed, though she should be living at that time.

The Leander LEWIS family was enumerated in the 1900-1920 census of Jefferson Twp., Huntington Co., IN. Leander was Eileen's maternal 2nd-great granduncle, the son of Solomon and Margaret (RHINEHART) LEWIS.

Leander was a farmer who owned his own home in all three census records. He listed his father as being born in Indiana in the 1900 and 1910 census, but in 1920, his father was listed as being from Pennsylvania. Leander's wife, Emily, was recorded as Emma, and she listed herself as born in Ohio with both parents being from Ohio. Both Leander and Emma could read and write.

Only one child, Ernest, was listed in the 1900 census, as a farm laborer, born February 1888. Yet the 1900 census states that Emma was the mother of 2 children who were both living. I have not yet found the record of the other child. By the 1910 census, Ernest was not living with his parents.

The Lawrence S. LEWIS family was enumerated in the 1910 and 1920 census of LaGro Twp., Wabash Co., IN. Lawrence was Eileen's maternal great-grandfather, the son of Jacob and Marietta (COOK) LEWIS.

Lawrence's occupation was that of a farmer who could read and write. His own was listed as free of mortgage in 1910, but mortgaged by the 1920 census. Wife Ruth Alice was the mother of 3 children, all living in 1910 census, who could also read and write.

The rest of the family included children : Lucille, Ernest, Flossie, Galen, Daniel and Leota in the 1920 census. Next door neighbors in the 1920 census were the PEFLEY family. Daughter Leota would later marry their son Sherman.

The Daniel LEWIS family was enumerated in the 1900 and 1910 census of Salamonie Twp., Huntington Co., IN. Daniel was Eileen's maternal 2nd-great granduncle, the son of Solomon and Margaret (RHINEHART) LEWIS.

Daniel's occupation was not given in the 1900 census, in fact, it was listed as "N.G.". In the 1910 census, his occupation was listed as "own income." In both census records, it was stated that he could not read, but could write. His wife, Alpha M., could both read and write. Daniel's parents were listed as both being born in Ohio, while Alpha's father was born in Ohio and her mother in Indiana.

In the 1900 census, their 14 year old daughter, Lena M. was listed with the family. She was attending school. By the 1910 census she was no longer living in the household. I do not yet have any record of a marriage for her.

Amberson G. Lewis family - Huntington & Wabash Cos., Indiana

Amberson G. LEWIS and family are enumerated in the 1910 census of Dallas Twp., Huntington Co., IN and the 1920 census of Wabash, Wabash Co., IN. Amberson was Eileen's maternal great-granduncle, the son of Jacob and Marietta (COOK) LEWIS.

Amberson was a factory worker in both census records, in the 1920 census he was listed as a machinist. Wife Mona was the mother of two children in1910, both living, and they had been married for 7 years. I have their marriage in my database as 1922, but I imagine that is a typographical error and it should be 1902. Right now, I have no source for the marriage date. Both Mona and Amberson's parents are listed as being born in Indiana, although in the 1920 census, Amberson stated that his father was born in the 'United States'.

In the 1920 census, son Paul was no longer a student, but had gone to work in a factory at age 16. His brother, Kenneth, was still a student.

William Clifford LEMASTER and family appear in the 1910 census of Ft. Collins, Larimer Co., CO. William was my paternal great-granduncle, the son of Luman Walker and Mary Keziah (CHEW) LEMASTERS.

William's occupation was that of a bank cashier. He had been married for 17 years, and was born in Ohio. His wife, Lella, was listed as age 38, born in Indiana, and the mother of four children, all of whom were living in the 1910 census. The children were all attending school, except for young William C. Junior, who was only five years old.

By the 1920 census, William and Lella were divorced, and William was living with son Ralph as a lodger in the household of Francis P. HALL in Victor, Teller Co., CO. William's occupation at that time was a proprietor of a theatre, and Ralph was working as an express driver.

Phillip LEMASTERS and family were enumerated in Spencerville, Spencer Twp., Allen Co., OH in the 1900 census. Phillip was my paternal 2nd-great granduncle, the son of Luman and Nancy (YOUNG) LEMASTERS.

Phillip was listed as being born June 1836 in Ohio and his occupation was that of a clergyman. His father was listed as being born in West Virginia and his mother in Ohio. Phillip's wife, Elizabeth, was born June 1848 in Ohio, and her parents were both born in Ohio. Their only child was daughter, Bessie E., born October 1880 in Ohio.

Dr. Ord O. LeMaster family - 1920 Shelby Co., OH

The Ord O. LeMASTER household was enumerated in the 1st ward of the city of Sidney in the 1920 census of Shelby Co., OH. Ord was the son of Luman Walker and Mary Keziah (CHEW) LeMASTERS. In this census, the name was rendered LeMASTER.

Ord was listed as a physician, aged 43, born in Indiana who owned his own home free of mortgage. Wife Emma was aged 38, born in Indiana as well. Ord's parents were listed as being both born in Indiana, while Emma's mother was listed as being born in Alsace Lorraine and spoke French.

Daughter Isabel, aged 9, was also enumerated with the family, but the census record did not indicate that she attended school within the year. I'm sure that she did.

Ord Otterbein LeMASTERS b. January 1, 1876 Jay Co., IN., d. September 19, 1937, m. June 12, 1907 to Emma W.G. GARMHAUSEN. Emma was born June 15, 1881 and died February 10, 1956. Their only child was daughter Isabelle Helene LeMASTERS b. August 22, 1910.

Lella Edith (Lewis) LeMasters - 1920 Santa Clara Co., CA

Lella Edith (LEWIS) LeMASTERS was enumerated in the 1920 census of San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA aged 43, divorced, whose occupation was listed as a storekeeper for a stove store.

She was living in the household of William S. MORRISEY along with several other lodgers with various backgrounds and occupations.

Lella had been married to William Clifford LeMASTERS, son of Luman Walker and Mary Keziah (CHEW) LeMASTERS on August 20, 1892 in Jay Co., IN. They were the parents of four children :
Gladys, Lella, Ralph and William.

In the 1910 census the family was living in Ft. Collins, Larimer Co., CO. Lella and William must have divorced sometime between 1910-1920. More research is needed.

Lella died April 1, 1943 in Martinez, CA.

John Stevens LeMasters family - Howard Co., NE

The John Stevens LeMASTERS family was enumerated in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census of St. Paul, Howard Co., NE. John was my maternal 2nd-great granduncle, the son of Luman Walker and Nancy (YOUNG) LEMASTERS.

John' s occupation was that of a day laborer and contractor in concrete work. He also owned his own home, which was mortgaged. John's place of birth was always listed as being in Indiana. but wife Sarah was listed as being born in Illinois in the 1920 census. John's parents were both listed as being born in Ohio in the 1900 census; in the 1910 census his father was listed as being born in Virginia and his mother in Ohio; in the 1920 census his father was listed as being born in Ohio and his mother in Virginia. As always, depending on who the census taker asked the questions will determine the answer.

In the 1910 census, three of John's daughters were listed as being public school teachers : Alice C., Nancy J. and Edna I. By the 1920 census, only one daughter, Alice, aged 36, was still living with John and Sarah teaching school. In 1920, son Howard Jay was still at home but working as a laborer at a railroad roundhouse, and youngest son Edward was still in school.

I still have much more information to gather on what happened to these families after the 1920 census. Two sons, Albert and John were probably on their own by the 1920 census, and daughters Nancy & Edna may have either moved away or been married by then.

John LEMASTERS and his family were enumerated in the 1860 census of Pulaski Co., IN in Van Buren Twp. on June 26, 1860 under the surname LEMASTER. John was the son of Jacob and Hannah (________) LEMASTERS and was my paternal 3rd-great granduncle.

John's occupation was that of a farmer, with the value of his real estate standing at $1000 and his personal estate at $200. John. aged 55, was erroneously listed as being born in Ohio; he was born in Mason Co., VA. Wife Mary was listed as aged 51 born in Pennsylvania.

The rest of the family consisted of sons Thomas M. and William W., aged 21 and 19, who were listed as farm laborers; daughter Mary E. aged 18, son James aged 16, daughter Nancy J. aged 14 and son Luman W. aged 12. All were listed as being born in Ohio. Luman's name was listed as Laman.

The other children of John and Mary were not enumerated on the same page and I need to do further research on this family. I believe that they migrated from Shelby Co., OH to Pulaski Co., IN shortly after the death of John's father, Jacob, in 1852.

Peoples v. Stanley - Indiana Supreme Court May Term 1855

May Term, 1855 : Peoples v. Stanley

Bill in chancery under the R.S. 1843. Some of the defendants were notified of the pendency of the suit, as non-residents, by publication, and a decree was taken against them by default. No affidavit of their non-residence was made. A guardian ad litem was appointed for other defendants, who were minors, and a decree was taken against them; but it was not shown that they had any notice of the suit, by service of process or otherwise. Held, that the Court had not acquired jurisdiction of the persons of the defendants mentioned, and that the decree against them was, consequently, erroneous. A Court of equity cannot appropriate choses in action of a debtor to the payment of a demand of a creditor.

Monday, June 11. ERROR to the Marshall Circuit Court.

Davison, J. - Stanley, on the 6th of June, 1850, sued Hugh A.B. Peoples, Thomas Skilman, John Fisher, John Jones, Alvin Kite, and Orange Fisher, in chancery, in the Marshall Circuit Court.

The bill states these facts :

Peoples and Skilman, as sureties for Jones and Kite, became indebted to Stanley 600 dollars. Jones, Kite and Skilman were insolvent. Peoples, with intent to defraud Stanley, and evade the payment of said debt, which was then in judgment, placed a certain amount of money in the hands of John Fisher, and directed him to lay it out in canal land, and take the title in his, Fisher's, name. In pursuance of this arrangement, Fisher went to the land office at Logansport, and purchased a quarter-section of land in Marshall county. After this, Peoples, with his family, moved upon said land, improved it, and resided thereon until the month of March, 1850, when he and Fisher left the state, with the avowed intention of going to California. When Fisher bought the land, he obtained a certificate of purchase, which, before he started to California, he assigned to Patsey Peoples, the wife of the said Hugh Peoples, and she, the said Patsey, remained in the occupancy of the land, and also in the possession of personal property belonging to her husband, worth 500 dollars. It appeared that, within a few days after their departure for California, Patsey Peoples died, leaving William, George, Daniel, Mary and Samuel Peoples, her heirs at law, they being minors and the children of the said Hugh and Patsey. These children, by amendment of the bill, were subsequently made defendants. After the death of Patsey, the property left with her was sold by the said Orange Fisher, who, in making the sale thereof, acted without authority, and took notes for the purchase-money, payable to himself at six months. The bill alleges that Hugh A.B. Peoples and John Fisher are non-residents, and prays the appropriation of the notes in the hands of Orange Fisher, and also the above land, to the payment of Stanley's claim, and for general relief, &c.

The record shows that Peoples and John Fisher were notified by publication, and defaulted; though an affidavit of their non-residency does not appear to have been made. It is alleged that the minor defendants answered by guardian ad litem; but it is not shown that they had any notice of the suit, or that any steps, by process or otherwise, were taken to notify them of the proceeding. The other defendants, (except Orange Fisher, who answered,) were served with process, and defaulted.

The Court, upon final hearing, directed the notes taken for the sale of the personal property by Orange Fisher, (which had been brought into Court,) to be collected, and the proceeds to be applied to the payment of Stanley's claim, which was adjudged to be 596 dollars; and for the payment of the balance, if any, after the application of such proceeds, the land was ordered to be sold.

This decree, in our opinion, can not be sustained -

1. Because the notice by publication against Peoples and Fisher does not appear to have been preceded by an affidavit of non-residency. Without such affidavit, we think the notice was insufficient, and, consequently, they were not properly before the Court. A provision of the R.S. 1843, in force at the time of these proceedings, points out the mode in which a non-resident party may be notified of the pendency of a suit, and expressly requires that such notice shall be upon affidavit. R.S. 1843, p. 883.

2. It is not shown that the minor defendants were served with process, or notified of the suit in any mode known to the law. This Court has repeatedly decided that process should be served on infant defendants, in chancery, in the same manner as if they were adults. Hough v. Canby, 8 Blackf. 301 - Robbins v. Robbins, 2 Ind. R. 74.

3. A Court of chancery has no power to appropriate choses in action in payment of a creditor's demand against his debtor, whether such demand be in judgment or otherwise. This point is decided in Shaw v. Aveline, 5 Ind. R 389; and also in Stewart v. English, ante, p. 176.

Per curiam. - The decree is reversed with costs. Cause remanded, &c.

Jacob Lemasters family : 1900 & 1920 Valley Co., NE

The Jacob LEMASTERS family appears in the 1900 & 1920 census of Valley Co., NE in the city of Ord. I have not yet located the record in the 1910 census. Jacob was my 2nd-great granduncle, the son of Luman Walker and Nancy (YOUNG) LEMASTERS.

In the 1900 census of Noble Twp., Valley Co., Jacob is listed as a farmer, born April 1845 in Ohio, who owns his home with a mortgage. His wife, Sarah, was born November 1844 in Ohio, and was the mother of 11 children, 9 of whom were still living in 1900. Currently, I only have record of ten children, so there is one missing. Most of the family had married and moved on, leaving on daughter Melinda C., a 23-year old Teacher, and sons John W. and Jonas T., who were still at school. Both Melinda and John W. were born in Indiana, Jonas T. was born in Nebraska in September 1886.

In the 1920 census, Jacob was living in the 3rd ward of the city of Ord as a retired Farmer. His age was given as 74, his wife Sarah was listed as aged 75. Their granddaughter, Norma Swanson, aged 13 born Nebraska, was also listed as living with them. Norma was the daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth C. (LEMASTERS) SWANSON. The date of this census was January 16, 1920 and Sarah Lemasters died later that year on June 18, 1920.

Jacob LEMASTERS b. April 16, 1845 Port Jefferson, Shelby Co., OH., d. December 15, 1922 Ord, Valley Co., NE, m. December 26, 1867 in Jay Co., IN to Sarah Ann HALFHILL, daughter of John and Nancy (________) HALFHILL. Sarah was born November 16, 1844 in Gallia Co., OH and died June 18, 1920 in Ord, Valley Co., NE.

High - Cooper Wedding

Nicole Lee Cooper and Andrew Jacob High will marry Oct. 6 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Anderson with the Rev. Robert Williams officiating.

Nicole is the daughter of Gary and Pam Cooper of Alexandria. She is a 2001 graduate of Alexandria-Monroe High School and a 2005 graduate of Ball State University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She is a registered nurse, employed by Community Hospital North in the Intensive Care Unit.

Her fiancé is the son of Phil High of Anderson and Mary High of Noblesville. He is a 1997 graduate of Alexandria-Monroe High School and a 2002 graduate of Ball State University with a bachelor’s degree in business management. He is employed by Speedway Oil Corp., as a district manager.

The couple will honeymoon to Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

Isaac Lemasters family : 1900 & 1910 census Jasper Co., MO

The Isaac LEMASTERS family was found in the 1900 and 1910 census of Madison Twp., Jasper Co., MO. Isaac was the son of Isaac and Elizabeth (COLEMAN) LEMASTERS, and was my 1st cousin 4 times removed.

Issac was a farmer who owned his home free of mortgage in the 1900 census. He was born April 1837 in Ohio and had been married to wife Sarah for 39 years. Sarah was born June 1840 in Ohio and was the mother of 10 children, all of whom were still living in 1900. Two of their sons, Clinton and Clifford, were living at home in the 1900 census. There was also a boarder in the household, a Pearl McLANE, aged 10 years old, born in Iowa. No relationship that I'm aware of to this family.

In the 1910 census, Isaac and Sarah were living with son Clifford, his wife Reable, and their granddaughter, Geneva. Geneva was just 3 months old at the time of the census. Reable was aged 23 born in Missouri, and she and Clifford had been married for 4 years. Clifford's occupation was listed as farmer.

Isaac died shortly after the 1910 census in Madison Twp., Jasper Co., MO.

Joseph Langwell Family : Monroe & Owen Cos., IN

The Joseph LANGWELL family appears in the 1860 census of Washington Twp., Monroe Co., IN. Joseph was the second husband to my maternal 4th-great grandmother, Fanny REYNOLDS. Joseph and Fanny had six children together after their marriage circa 1851. Fanny was the widow of Austin DAVIS, who died between November 1850 and August 1851 in Monroe Co., IN. Joseph was the son of Solomon and Eleanor (________) LANGWELL.

In the 1860 census, Joseph was listed as a 30 year old laborer, born in Kentucky, with a personal estate valued at $120. Fanny was listed as a 28 year old female born in Indiana. Their two children, Perry and America, were listed as well as Fanny's son from her first marriage, James A. Davis, aged 10. James A. Davis was my 3rd-great grandfather.

In the 1870 census, Joseph was listed as aged 43, a farmer, born in Indiana. The family was living in Bean Blossom Twp. of Monroe Co. at this time. His surname was spelled LANGUELL in this census. Wife Fannie was listed as age 39, born in Indiana. The family had grown to include Perry, aged 16; America, aged 14; David, aged 9; Minne Belle, aged 5; and John W. , aged 1 year.

In the 1880 census, Joseph and family were living in Spencer, Owen Co., IN. He was listed as being 50 years old, born in Kentucky, and his occupation was listed as teamster. Wife Fanny was 47 years old, born in Indiana and keeping house. The children included David, Minnie Belle, John W., and Arminta, who was aged 8 years old. Son Perry was living next door and was married with a family of his own.

Joseph LANGWELL b. ca. 1830 Kentucky, d. June 16, 1883 Spencer, Owen Co., IN., m. ca. 1851 to Fanny REYNOLDS, b. ca. 1830 Indiana, d. February 2, 1883 Spencer, Owen Co., IN. Fanny was the daughter of Jesse and Mary (PUTMAN) REYNOLDS.

Frank Langer family : 1920 Vanderburgh Co., IN

My daughter's maternal great-great grandmother Clara Belle and her second husband, Frank A. LANGER, appeared in the 1920 census of Vanderburgh Co., IN in the 3rd ward of Evansville.

Frank LANGER was aged 48 years, born in Indiana, and worked as a fireman at a flour mill. Both of his parents were born in Germany. Wife Clara was aged 48 years, born in Kentucky, with both of her parents born in Kentucky also.

Clara's children appeared in the household, but were incorrectly listed under the LANGER surname. Eldest daughter, Rhoda M. Godbey was living with them as well, but her husband William was not listed. Daughters Nellie and Hallie and son Alpha were all listed under the wrong surname.

Frank A. LANGER b. ca. 1872 Indiana, d. October 9, 1949 Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., IN., m. September 22, 1919 in Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., IN. to Clara Belle FOLLOWAY, daughter of James and Julia (WILLIAMS) FOLLOWAY. Clara was born April 10, 1871 Kentucky and died July 21, 1951 Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., IN. Her first marriage was March 3, 1886 in Warrick Co., IN to Alpha Revis CHIVLARE, son of Miles and Louisa J. (BOYER) CHIVLARE. Alpha was born March 1866 Indiana and died July 7, 1919 in Perry Twp., Vanderburgh Co., IN.

Ward Lambertson : 1910 Montgomery Co., OH

Ward LAMBERTSON was enumerated in the 1910 census of Jackson Twp., Montgomery Co., OH as head of household. Ward was the son of John V. and Annie E. (OLIVER) LAMBERTSON.

Ward's occupation was listed as that of a laborer of odd jobs. His age was given as 23 years, born Ohio, married for 2 years, who owned a home that was mortgaged. His wife, Ollie, was aged 22 years, born in Ohio, with only one child. Ollie's parents were also born in Ohio.

Their daughter, Neva, was just 2 years old at the time of the census, born in Ohio.

I have Nelson J. LAMBERTSON born April 4, 1838 Stillwell Corner, Butler Co., OH, m. June 26, 1858 Butler Co., OH to Eliza Jane JOHNSON, d. October 3, 1929 Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH. He was the son of John and Sarah (WILLSON) LAMBERTSON.

Alexandria-Monroe Historical Society Museum Visit

Yesterday on my lunch hour, I visited the Alexandria-Monroe Historical Society Museum located at 313 N. Harrison St. Alexandria Indiana. The museum is run by volunteers and is only open on Thursdays from 1-5 p.m.

It had been many years since I was able to visit the museum, and I was pleasantly surprised at the numerous exhibits and pictures with local history. I found a picture of my uncle Terry Wright in his Boy Scout days, also my great-uncle John High was featured in the military history room.

The local history section was full of tidbits for further research, including local funeral home and church records. I noticed that my cousin had submitted a notebook on the KING family and there were others that I would have loved to have been able to examine, had I more time. I am going to have to plan some quick lunch time research there in the near future.

Membership in the society is only $10/year.

Nellie Lambertson : 1920 Marion Co., Indiana

I found Nellie Lambertson, widow of Samuel, in the 1920 census of the 6th ward of Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN in the 1920 census. She was living on Illinois Street in the David Arms apartments on North Illinois street.

Her occupation was listed as a seamstress for a hotel. Nellie was aged 57, widowed, and born in Massachusetts. Her father was born in New York and her mother was born in Massachusetts.

I still need to discover what Nellie's maiden name was and find a record of her marriage to Samuel, which probably took place between 1909-1910 in either Hamilton or Madison Co., IN.

Jesse Reynolds Died

Jesse Reynolds, who has resided north of Ellettsville a number of years, died on Friday a week in his 83rd year.

Jesse REYNOLDS was born circa 1809 in Tennessee and married August 18, 1830 in Monroe Co., IN to Mary PUTMAN, daughter of James and Elizabeth (KENDRICK) PUTMAN. Mary was born circa 1809 in Kentucky and died February 2, 1884 in Bean Blossom Twp., Monroe Co., IN. Mary is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Ellettsville, IN.

I descend through their daughter Fanny, born circa 1830 Indiana, who married Austin DAVIS on February 9, 1850 in Monroe Co., IN.

Those Pesky Maiden Names

One of the hardest areas of research in any family history is identifying the maiden names of our ancestors.  So many of our female ancestors go to their reward unnamed or named in records with only their given name.  Trying to discover their surnames is sometimes a case of the proverbial 'needle in a haystack'.

 

How these unknown maiden names are handled in our genealogy databases vary from person to person.  Some have made the practice of using 'Unknown' as the surname.  Others have taken this a bit further and abbreviated the surname as 'Unk.'  A quick search on the internet, and Rootsweb mailing lists in particular, will show that many beginning researches have been misled and/or confused by requesting data on the 'Unk' family!  Imagine an UNK family researcher trying to wade through all of the emails and message board posts that don't relate to their family simply because of researchers using 'Unk' for a female's surname.

 

In the past, I have used [________] when a female's surname was unknown.  I did this to allow family members to fill in the blanks on family group sheets.  However, I've recently decided to change tactics, as my database was overwhelmed by these women without an easy way to identify who they are.

 

For now, I'm identifying these women by their married name in brackets.  For example, the unknown spouse of Jacob Lemasters is now Hannah [LEMASTERS].  I am hoping that this new method in my data will allow me to understand which Hannah's data I am looking at when searching the index.  It is amazing to me how many unidentified females I have in my data - each one that represents an untraced family line.

 

Some of the men in my database managed to marry two women with the same first name.  While I guess that would make it easy not to call your second wife by the first wife's name, it keeps my database interesting.  In these cases, I will name the women Elizabeth [SMITH] and Elizabeth [SMITH2] for simplicity sake and to be sure that I don't accidentally merge the two together.

 

While my system may not be perfect or meet someone else's standards, I believe that for now it will work for me.  The key will be whether or not I can use this change in method to help identify these ladies.

Samuel Lambertson Family - Hamilton & Madison Co., IN

Samuel S. LAMBERTSON was my maternal 2nd great-granduncle, the son of Carey & Clara W. (COOK) LAMBERTSON. He appears in the 1900 census in Jackson Twp., Hamilton Co., IN and in the 1910 census in the 3rd ward of Elwood, Madison Co., IN.

In 1900, Samuel was a 25 year old day laborer who had been married to his wife, Ida, for 3 years. Samuel had been unemployed for 5 months during the past year and rented his home. He was listed in the census with his wife, Ida. Ida was a 22 year old female born in Indiana whose father and mother were both born in Ohio. Ida was shown as the mother of 1 child, who was not living at the time of the census.

The date on the enumeration of this census was June 28, 1900. Now, this was interesting to me because Ida Lambertson died June 19, 1900 in Hamilton Co., of spinal meningitis. The census taker was to record the names of everyone who was alive on June 1, 1900. I was previously unaware that Samuel and Ida had any children, and I was curious if this child had died at birth along with Ida.

My brother, Jason, works at the Hamilton Co., IN Health department, so I asked him to check and see if there were any death records for Ida Lambertson or a Lambertson child in 1900. This research came back negative, so either the death did not occur in Hamilton Co. or was not recorded. At that time period, it was more than likely just not recorded.

Other sources I've found for Ida indicate that her funeral was handled by the Leatherman-Morris-Boyer Funeral Home in Tipton Co., IN. I will keep searching and see what I can find out about her death and burial.

In 1910, Samuel was a 36 year-old house painter living in the 3rd ward of the city of Elwood in Madison Co., IN. In this record, his father is reported as being born in Ohio, where as in 1900 he was reported as being born in New Jersey. Samuel was married for a second time for 1 year to wife Nellie, and owned his own home. Nellie was a 38 year-old female born in Massachusetts who had no children. She could read and write.

Samuel died that next year on October 15, 1911 in Elwood and is buried in the Elwood City Cemetery.

Samuel S. LAMBERTSON b. January 11, 1875 Preble Co., OH., d. October 15, 1911 Elwood, Madison Co., IN., m. March 19, 1897 in Tipton Co., IN to Ida M. STONE, m(2) ca. 1909-1910 to Nellie ________.

I've just spent some time going over the tags on my previous blog posts in order to categorize them by surname.  This should help me, and anyone else who reads this blog to find all relevant posts.

 

There is much work to be done to update this blog and quite a bit of family history to post online.  Time is wasting!

 

I've noticed that on many earlier posts I posed questions to research problems I've discovered, but yet I never posted any queries on Rootsweb or other message boards.  This will be a project for the future.

 

I figured that today, if I had to come to work for a half-day on Saturday, I could at least do something productive for my blog.

Nelson J. Lambertson - Butler Co., OH

Nelson J. LAMBERTSON appears in the 1900-1920 census in Hamilton, Butler Co., OH. Nelson is my maternal 3rd great granduncle, the son of John and Sarah A. (WILLSON) LAMBERTSON.

Nelson appears as the head of household in the 1900 census, aged 31 years. His occupation was that of a wagon maker with a real estate value of $500. Also appearing with Nelson was his widowed daughter, Mary LOY, and her son Lewis. Lewis was shown as being born June 1891 in Ohio.

Nelson appears in the 1910 and 1920 census in the household of daughter Mary and her new husband David CREWS. In the 1920 census, David's surname is spelled CRUSS. David was born ca. 1871 in Indiana his occupation was that of an electrician.

The 1920 census shows son Lora CRUSS, aged 28, born Ohio who is an electrician. I believe that this may be Mary's son, Lewis, from her first marriage. It is possible that the census enumerator assigned him to the wrong surname. More investigation will have to be done.

Nelson J. LAMBERTSON was born April 4, 1838 Stillwell Corner, Butler Co., OH, d. October 3, 1929 Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH and was buried in the Abbottsville Cemetery in Darke Co., OH. Nelson married June 26, 1858 Riley Twp., Butler Co., OH to Eliza Jane JOHNSON, b. December 1837 Ohio and died July 6, 1899. Nelson was a Civil War veteran of Co. I, 167th Regt., OH National Guard.

Leona D. Lambertson - 1920 Madison Co., IN

My maternal great-grandaunt, Leona D. Lambertson, appears in the 1920 census of Elwood, Madison Co., IN as a lodger in the home of Sherman B. Harting. In this capacity, she was listed as a servant.

Leona was the daughter of Charles Wilson and Pearl May (Beals) Lambertson, born August 20, 1904 in Hamilton Co., IN.

I did not know that she was working at such a young age as a domestic, nor do I know of any relationship with this particular Harting family. I was surprised to not find Leona listed with the rest of her family in the 3rd ward of Elwood.

Initial Conversion Experiences with RootsMagic

Having recently converted from FamilyTreeMaker to RootsMagic, I must say that I have been overwhelmed and pleasantly pleased with the experience. As previously noted, I had been using FTM since the mid-1990s when I obtained my first PC. Although I had only upgraded to FTM 6.0, I was still pleased with the database and it meet my needs. With each new upgrade to FTM, I hesitated to spend money going after minor tweaks to the program and/or additional 'bells and whistles' that I did not need. It was not until reading about the reviews of the new FTM 2008 that I decided to investigate upgrading my genealogical software and after doing so, I decided that FTM would not be the way to go. I am so glad that I found RootsMagic.

The database converted my FTM file into RootsMagic with ease, and I immediately set about looking at the various reports and charts. There are so many ways to 'tweak' the data, that I can tell that I am going to love using this program for a long time. Over the past few days I have been modifying some information in my database, correcting known problems, and adding a few 'to-do' list items.

I would recommend this program to anyone who is serious about doing family history research just for the powerful source wizard alone. Already I have been able to use it to create source data for census records, etc. and found that in just a few quick steps, I had a source that was standardized along the lines of Elizabeth Shown Mills work "Evidence..." The family view in RootsMagic has allowed me to notice missing pieces of data in my research, and I've already created a few 'to-do' lists for my next research trip. The merge option was easy to use, and I found a few individuals that needed to be merged together. I have even played with the error reports and will slowly be correcting or ignoring potential errors that the program finds.

I can't praise this program enough! It is an easy to use and powerful database, with so many options and discoveries that await. It's hard to stay focused and realize that I have to go to work each day and not just stay at home and look at my family history in a new light.

Obituary : Albert Hanley Pefley Sr.

Albert Hanley Pefley Sr., Peosta, Iowa, went home for eternal rest after a short battle with Burkitt's Lymphoma, complicated by a recent stroke. He passed away in the home of his daughter, Jill Zintz, Plano, Iowa, on Aug. 15, 2007. He was surrounded by family as he was ushered by his angels to Heaven to spend the rest of eternity with Jesus and passed loved ones.

"Ab" was born on Aug. 18, 1931, at home on the family farm near Lagro, to Homer and Flossie Lewis-Pefley. His mother often told the story of placing her small-for-size infant son in a shoebox in the bottom of an open bureau drawer as a makeshift cradle.

His parents and grandparents were farmers and instilled a deep love of nature and respect of the land in him. He told a story of himself as a child of raiding the farm kitchen drawer for spoons and "plowing" a small spot in his mother's garden. He would then ask his Mom for any seed or bean she could spare so that he could "farm" a spot. Although she was not enthused about transforming her flatware into "farm equipment," his mother supported his love for farming and supplied what he needed so that he could plant, nurture, and harvest "his crop."

He was a very spiritual person and credits this to his Grandfather Lewis. He would often talk of a special memory of his baptism in the Salamonie River in Indiana as a young boy alongside his brother, Robert. Currently, he attended the Word of Life Church in Dubuque, Iowa, where he helped with the Angel Food Outreach Program and participated in the Christian Mens' breakfast group. He was always willing to lend a hand in any committee or activity that needed volunteers. In his earlier years, he volunteered as a church usher and passionately taught Sunday school. He believed strongly in blood donation at the Red Cross and eagerly sought out donations for the American Heart and Cancer societies, and the Haiti Outreach Project.

After high school graduation, Al enlisted in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he managed the sports department on base. It was there that he met and befriended Billy Martin and Zack Monroe, who went on to play professional baseball.

After his military discharge, he attended and graduated from Purdue University with a degree in agriculture-business. While in college, he met Barbara Schomers and they married soon after his graduation. To this union, they were blessed with five children, Al PefleyJr., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Debbie Wardlow, Centerville, Iowa, Kim Klinkhammer, Dubuque, Iowa, Jill Zintz, Plano, Iowa, and Jeff Pefley, Dubuque, Iowa.

With his new wife, he relocated to Austin, Minn., where he made a 35-year career with Hormel Foods. Through his career, he and his family found homes in Austin and Hutchinson, Minn., Centerville, Iowa, and LeCenter, Minn. He and Barbara retired to Peosta, Iowa, in 1998. Because Al found it difficult to sit still after retirement, he took on part-time jobs at Timberline Golf Course in Peosta as a greenskeeper through the summer and at Sundown Ski Resort, Asbury, Iowa, as a ski-lift operator during the winters.

Al's hobbies included barbecuing, fishing, gardening, golfing, woodworking, antiquing, furniture restoration and Bible study. He was active with Emmaus, Lions Club, Jaycees, Odd Fellow Lodge, Disciples and many church committees. In addition to volunteering at church, the Dubuque Rescue Mission and Food for the Soul, Al always "loved God's people" and never knew a stranger. Al often sought out those in need and befriended them, never forgetting a face or a name.

Al is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Dean, and an infant stillborn brother, Henry.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, Peosta, Iowa; brothers, Harvey, Kokomo, and Robert, Lagro; a sister, Bonnie Ramey, LaFontaine; his children; three sons-in-law, Sean Wardlow, Tim Klinkhammer and Bill Zintz; and 13 grandchildren, Crystal, Caitlyn and Nick Howe, Stephen and Sawyer Wardlow, Tony, Troy, Tara and Tyler Furlin, Brittney and Hilary Morris and Joe and Chloe Zintz.

Arrangements are being handled by Behr Funeral Home, Dubuque, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, at Behr Funeral Home, with services at Word of Life Church at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007.

The family wishes to thank Mercy Medical Center-Hospice of Centerville, Pastors Loren Hirschey and Kay Singley for frequent visits, powerful prayers and communion, Dr. Garber, Emma Leopard (Al's home health aide), Lois Hays and Doctors Paulsen, Loukinen, Bek, Ringold, Kukla, Caceres and Horwitz, in addition to the nurses at Mercy Health Center of Dubuque who cared lovingly for Dad, for the fellowship, friendship and support shown by friends at Timberline Golf Course and Sundown Ski Resort. Thanks for the prayers from Emmaus, First United Methodist Church of Centerville, Word of Life Church of Dubuque and numerous prayer chains that gave Dad hope, the visits that brightened his days and lessened his suffering and the steady stream of cards that made him smile when we didn't think he had a smile left to share.

A memorial fund has been established to Mercy Medical Center-Hospice of Centerville.

John Lambertson family - 1900 Randolph Co., IN

John V. Lambertson family appears in the 1900 census of Randolph Co., IN in Monroe Twp. He was living in the household of his father-in-law, William Oliver. By this time, John was married to second wife, Annie E. Oliver. John stated that his father was born in Germany and that his mother was born in Virginia. This conflicts with other data that shows his father and mother were both born in New Jersey.

John was born August 17, 1833 in Warren Co., NJ, and had married his second wife, Annie E. Oliver on April 20, 1882 in Farmland, Randolph Co., IN. Annie was born August 1853 in Ohio and died May 1, 1901 in Hamilton, OH. John died August 30, 1913 in Farmersville, Butler Co., OH. John is buried in the Municipal Cemetery, Farmersville.

John and Annie had one son, Ward W. Lambertson, born August 3, 1886 in Ohio.

There were other grandchildren of William Oliver listed in the household under the name of Lyst. They were Oliver, Annie and Ralph. I speculate that they may be the children of Millard and Hettie (________) Lyst, grandchildren of John and Sarah (Lambertson) Lyst. This would make another connection between Mr. Oliver and the Lambertson family.

Switching to RootsMagic

I've taken the plunge and have updated my genealogy software to RootsMagic 3. Previously, I have been using Family Tree Maker version 6.0. Over the years I've avoided updating and buying the seemingly endless updates and 'new versions' of FTM that seemed to grow like weeds.

So far, I am impressed by the ease in which I could import my data into RootsMagic. The source wizard is an easy interface to use, and I'm having fun playing with my database to see how new reports will look.

George G. Lambertson family - 1860 Mason Co. KY & 1870 New York City

The mysterious George G. LAMBERTSON and family was found in the 1860 census of Mason Co., KY. George was listed as age 28, born in New Jersey, and his occupation was that of M.E. [Methodist Episcopal] Minister. He appears with his wife Harriet, age 26, born Ohio; and two children : Isolina aged 2 and George L. aged 10 months.

In the 1870 census of Reily Twp., Butler Co., OH, Harriet LAMBERTSON is living with her brother Daniel JONES and his family. Only daughter Isolina is listed, so I presume that George L. died sometime between 1860 and 1870.

George G. LAMBERTSON appears in the 1870 census of 16th Ward of New York City as a Botanical doctor, aged 37, born in New Jersey. He has a new wife, Adelaide, aged 37, a Fortune Teller born in Connecticut.

Clemon Lambertson Family - Madison Co., IN

My maternal great-grandfather, Clemon Beals Lambertson, appears in the 1920 and 1930 census of Madison Co., IN as head of household in the 2nd ward of the city of Elwood.

In both records, he is listed as working at a cabinet factory, which matches his obituary that stated he worked for Sellers Cabinets in Elwood. In the 1920 census, he was renting his home, but by 1930 he owned a home. The family owned a radio in 1930.

It was interesting to see the record of my grandmother, Bonnie, and her brothers and sister on the census records in 1930.

Charles W. Lambertson Family - Hamilton & Madison Co., IN

The Charles W. Lambertson family was enumerated in the 1910 census of Hamilton Co., IN and the 1920 census of Madison Co., IN. Charles was my maternal 2nd-great-grandfather.

In the 1910 census, Charles' occupation was that of a painter and in 1920 he was a carpenter working for a contracting firm. They 1910 census states that his wife, Pearl, was the mother of 5 children with 5 living. This information excludes twins, Gerald and Geraldine, who were born and died in 1906 of milk poisoning.

In the 1920 census, daughter Leona was living as a lodger in the household of Freeman Harting on North A street in the city of Elwood.

Carmen Lambertson Family - Montgomery & Darke Co., OH

The Carmen Lambertson family appears in the 1860 census of German Twp., Montgomery Co., OH and the 1870 census of Van Buren Twp., Darke Co., OH. While I have his name as being spelled 'Carmon', both census records spell it as 'Carmen'. Carmon was my maternal 3rd-great granduncle.

Carmen's occupation was that of a farmer in 1860 and a wagon maker in 1870. He and his wife Mary must have lost two children as during that time period as daughter Florence b. circa 1851 and son James b. circa 1853 were not listed in the 1870 census. The value of Carmen's personal estate was only $100 in 1870.

Stivers Update

Jim Ed Prow of Hendricksville contacted me about the Stivers family, as he's looking for updates and photographs. His grandmother Roxie Stivers was a sister to Daniel Stivers who married Dealie Davis. Dealie was the sister of my 2nd-great grandmother, Ida Davis. Hopefully, we can share some information and expand my knowledge of this family.

Daniel Stivers' parents were John W. and Eliza Jane (Martin) Stivers, according to Jim Ed.

Daniel was born January 12, 1777 in Botetourt Co., VA and died May 2, 1862 in Union Co., IN. He married Anna Coger on February 3, 1798 in Franklin Co., VA.

Gegenheimer Update

Received an email from a cousin, Heidi Gegenheimer-Murphy who was able to update my data on the family of Sarah C. Haley who married August Gegenheimer. She was able to provide names of additional children as well as some death dates. Sarah C. Haley was the daughter of George J. and Rachel (GARY) HALEY.

Find A Grave Photo Success : Edward Wildt

Member Kathy Current was able to obtain a photograph for me of Edward Ferdinand Wildt in the Locust Hill Cemetery in Evansville, IN. Edward is the maternal great-grandfather of my daughter. He and his wife Miriam Ruth (Miguet) Wildt both now have memorial pages at FindAGrave.

Kathy was also able to find the gravesite of Edward's brother, Gilbert D. Wildt at the Alexander Memorial Park cemetery.

Haunting Errors of World Family Tree

Back when I first started putting my genealogy data into Family Tree Maker, I made the novice mistake of importing data from the World Family Tree files that came along with the software. While this data provided many clues for further research, so much of it was not sourced that it is practically useless and full of errors. I have attempted to slowly and methodically eliminate any traces of this imported data from my database, but unfortunately some still remains.

Case in point is a recent WorldConnect post-em regarding a marriage record of Thomas Swafford and Nellie Howard. I have the date as 1800 in Bledsoe Co., TN with a source of WFT. However, as the poster pointed out, Bledsoe Co., TN was not even formed until 1801, so the location is wrong.

World Connect Postem : Sherrick Family

Received an update on World Connect regarding Jacob Sherrick whose daughter Barbara married Cyrus A. Baldwin. Midge Ryan contacted me to let me know that Jacob's name was also spelled Sherk, that he was born in Lancaster Co., PA and that his wife's name was Catherine Shock.

Jacob Sherrick and Catherine Shock were married January 13, 1825 in Wayne Co., IN. I'm not sure yet how he connects with my other Sherrick/Sherk lines. His daughter Barbara married my half 3rd cousin 6 times removed, Cyrus Baldwin. The Baldwins were Quakers and members of the West Grove MM in Wayne Co., IN.
