Obituary : Lillian Pierce (1902-1921)

Thanks to the the fine staff at the Anderson, IN Public Library, I now have copies of the obituaries of my maternal great-grandaunt, Lillian PIERCE. Prior to obtaining the obits, I only knew that she died in 1921 from her tombstone. A search of the obituary database from the Anderson Daily Bulletin at their website allowed me to find an obituary and request a copy. The staff sent me more - including other local papers' copy.

LILLIAN PIERCE AFTER LONG ILLNESS PASSES AWAY

Death Comes to Lovable Young Woman at Home of Father Thursday Evening

Miss Lillian Pierce, daughter of County Commissioner William Pierce, passed away yesterday evening at 5:30 o'clock at her father's home, 4 miles south of Alexandria at the age of 18 years, 10 months and 29 days, after an illness of 21 months of tuberculosis.

About a year and a half ago Miss Pierce was operated upon at the Home Hospital, and for a time was treated at the Alexandria Hospital. Everything possible was done by her loving father to help the young lady to regain her health, but all to no avail.

Miss Lillian will be greatly missed by her parents and all who knew her on account of her sweet and lovable disposition. To know her was to love her.

Miss Pierce, who knew her end was at hand, was cheerful to the last, and yesterday morning called Rev. Herbert Boase to her bedside and planned all funeral arrangements. She selected the pall bearers, flower carriers, and other details. Rev. E.C. Dunn, who baptised her, will conduct the funeral services at her selection and will be assisted by Rev. Boase.

The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock at the family home, and the interment will be at Maplewood cemetery, Anderson.

Miss Pierce is the daughter of Wm. Pierce by his first wife, who was Clara M. Peniston. The deceased is survived by her father, step-mother, one brother, Herman Pierce; one sister, Mrs. Virgil Wright; one half-sister, Nehesta, and three half-brothers, McClellan, Cloyd and Charles.

The funeral will be carried out just as planned by Miss Pierce yesterday.

LILLIAN PIERCE IS LAID AWAY IN HER LONG LAST SLEEP

Many Attend Funeral Yesterday Afternoon - Interment at Anderson Cemetery

The funeral of Miss Lillian Pierce was held at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Pierce, four miles south of this city, Sunday afternoon at three o'clock, and was one of the largest funerals ever held in that community. The funeral was conducted just as had been planned by Miss Pierce on the morning of her death.

Rev. E.C. Dunn conducted the services, using for his text the 14th chapter of John, first verse: "Let not your heart be troubled, ye believe in God, believe also in Me." He spoke of Christ going away, and of His interest in His disciples - how much He loved them, and that His desire was that they still believe in Him as their Saviour and Friend. Jesus was going away to be with His Father. He said : "I will not leave you comfortless." How true it is. He has been with us in spirit and power, to comfort us, and keep us near Him in life. He spoke tenderly of Miss Pierce, and how her face did shine with the glory of God when she was received into the church, and how resigned she has been since that time. He felt if she could only speak, she would say, "Let not your heart be troubled, have faith in Jesus." He will not leave you comfortless, but He will come unto you. We can not always understand, but Jesus said, "What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter."

Rev. Herbert Boase concluded the services at the home with a short sermon and prayer. The remains were then taken to the family burial plot in the West Maplewood cemetery at Anderson, where interment took place. The grave was lined with white and pink gladiolas and surrounding the grave were placed over two dozen beautiful floral designs. The casket, a peach bloom plush, was then placed over the grave, when the commital service was conducted as the body was lowered into its last resting place.

The floral offerings were beautiful and were carried by Gladys Fuller, Ruth Osborn, Floy Johnson, Lena Maddox, Ada Starr, Sarah Pierce, Daisy Whetsel, Pauline Jarrett, Nellie Maddox, Virginia Hollowell, Deva Gritton, Marie Pierce, Ethel Watson and Opal Hensley.

The pallbearers were Ruth Schwinn, Mildred Bristol, Ruby Stephenson, Dess Hollowell, Katherine Martin, Bernice Stephenson, assisted by John Johnson and Lyman Jones. The singing at the home consisted of two duets by Mrs. Harold Day and Miss Mildred Dunn, namely, "Does Jesus Care?" and "Will the Circle be Unbroken." Mrs. Harold Day sang as a solo, "Face to Face." Miss Katherine Keller accompanied the singers on the piano.

The Henry Mills POE household appears in the 1900 census of Norton, Norton Co., KS. Henry was my maternal 3rd-great granduncle, the son of Isaac S. and Hannah (MILLS) POE.

Henry is listed as a 42 year old insurance agent, born in Indiana, and married. His father was listed as born in North Carolina and mother in Tennessee. However, no wife is listed with the household. A son, Charles R., age 11, born in Kansas, is living with him and attending school.

Nearby is the household of an Emily I. POE, divorced, aged 36, born in Kansas, who is the mother of 3 children with two living. Living with her is a daughter, Edna A., aged 12, born in Kansas.

Because they are listed nearby, it is my opinion that Henry and Emily were previously married, but more research will need to be done to confirm. By the 1910 census, Henry was living with his widowed mother, and Emily had moved to another county.

Senator Phillips household - Murray Co., OK

The Senator PHILLIPS household was enumerated in the 1910 census of Murray Co., OK in the 2nd Ward of Sulphur City. Senator PHILLIPS was my paternal great-granduncle, husband of Una Maude LEMASTERS.

Senator was a veterinary surgeon in the 1910 census, aged 26, who had been married for 2 years. He was born in Kansas and both parents were born in Ohio. His wife, Maud, was aged 25, born in Indiana, with her father born in Mississippi and her mother born in Missouri. The family's young son, Donald K., aged 1, born in Oklahoma, was also living with them.

If anyone out there knows anything about this company or even how to research it, please let me know.

The Wesley T. METZNER household appears in the 1900, 1910 & 1930 census of Wayne Twp., Jay Co., IN. Wesley was my paternal 2nd-great granduncle, the son of John and Catherine (YOUNG) METZNER.

In the 1900 census, Wesley was a 45 year old Farmer, who had been married for 15 years. His father was born in Germany and his mother in France. Wesley owned his home free of mortgage. Wife Mary was aged 37, born in Indiana with both parents being born in Pennsylvania. Mary was the mother of 3 children, all of whom were living. Daughter Ethel C. was aged 13; son Jay E. was aged 12; and daughter Mary Vada was aged 4.

In the 1910 census, Wesley was a 54 year old general contractor. Wife Mary E. was aged 47 and was now the mother of 4 children, all of whom were living. Only three were listed as living with the family : Ethel C. was aged 23, working as a telephone operator; Mary V. was aged 13 attending school; and daughter Mabel E. was 4 years old. I have not found a record of son, Jay E., who would be approx. 22 years old at the time of the 1910 census.

By the 1930 census, Wesley was a 74 year old widower, living alone, with no occupation. He owned a radio, and his home was valued at $1250.

I need to research the 1920 census to try and locate this family. Also, I have conflicting dates of birth for daughters Mabel E. & Mary Vada that don't reconcile with the census records.

I've created a memorial page for my paternal grandfather, William Lee Wright (1919-1973), who is buried in the Park View Cemetery, Alexandria, IN, along with my grandmother, Bonnie.

William was born December 1, 1919 in Monroe Twp., Madison Co., IN, the middle of three children born to Virgil Lee and Edna Muriel (Pierce) Wright.

He was known as "Johnny Bill" throughout his life, apparently due to a conflict over whether or not to name him John William after his grandfather. The 1920 census record bears this out, as he is listed as John W.E. Wright, 1 month old.

Find A Grave Memorial : Ord Wehrly LeMaster (1906-1971)

I've created a Find A Grave memorial page for my paternal grandfather, Ord Wehrly LeMaster (1906-1971), who is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Jay Co., IN, along with my grandmother, Ruth.

Ord was born September 30, 1906 in Salamonia, Jay Co., IN, the son of Luman Cooper and Barbara Isabelle (Wehrly) LeMasters. He was the 11th born of 13 children.

He was named either after his uncle, Ord Otterbein LeMASTERS, or after Civil War general, E.O.C. Ord - or perhaps both of them were. His middle name, Wehrly, was a family name.

Since he died when I was just a child, I have no recollection of him.

Search for Nellie Lambertson - 1930 Marion Co., IN

I had posted a lookup request to the IN-CENSUS-LOOKUP mailing list for Nellie LAMBERTSON, widow of Samuel, hoping to find her in 1930. In the 1920 census, she was living in the 6th ward of Indianapolis, working as a seamstress. Nellie's birthplace was listed as Massachusetts.

I received a reply from a researcher stating no one with the surname LAMBERTSON was listed in the 1930 index of Indianapolis.

Either Nellie was deceased by then, or she was not living in Marion Co., IN.

Standards For Sharing Information With Others

Recommended by the National Genealogical Society

Conscious of the fact that sharing information or data with others, whether through speech, documents or electronic media, is essential to family history research and that it needs continuing support and encouragement, responsible family historians consistently—

  • respect the restrictions on sharing information that arise from the rights of another as an author, originator or compiler; as a living private person; or as a party to a mutual agreement.
  • observe meticulously the legal rights of copyright owners, copying or distributing any part of their works only with their permission, or to the limited extent specifically allowed under the law's "fair use" exceptions.
  • identify the sources for all ideas, information and data from others, and the form in which they were received, recognizing that the unattributed use of another's intellectual work is plagiarism.
  • respect the authorship rights of senders of letters, electronic mail and data files, forwarding or disseminating them further only with the sender's permission.
  • inform people who provide information about their families as to the ways it may be used, observing any conditions they impose and respecting any reservations they may express regarding the use of particular items.
  • require some evidence of consent before assuming that living people are agreeable to further sharing of information about themselves.
  • convey personal identifying information about living people—like age, home address, occupation or activities—only in ways that those concerned have expressly agreed to.
  • recognize that legal rights of privacy may limit the extent to which information from publicly available sources may be further used, disseminated or published.
  • communicate no information to others that is known to be false, or without making reasonable efforts to determine its truth, particularly information that may be derogatory.
  • are sensitive to the hurt that revelations of criminal, immoral, bizarre or irresponsible behavior may bring to family members.
