Exploratory Data Analysis : June Kirk (Gilliland) Lambertson (1898-1951)

June Kirk (Gilliland) Lambertson (1898-1951) was my maternal great-grandmother.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical facts I have discovered about her.

1. Vital records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

June was born June 11, 1898 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana1.  She is listed as "Infant (female) Davis" and her parents are listed as Atkinson and Ida Davis.

          1.1.1. Birth notice in newspaper

I have not been able to discover any mention of June's birth in the local newspapers of the time period.

          1.1.2. Bible record

I am not aware of any surviving Bible records of the Davis or Gilliland family.

          1.1.3. Baptismal record

I am not aware of any baptismal records for June, though I do not know the church affiliation of the family.

          1.1.4. Adoption record

I am not aware of any official adoption records for June, but she did adopt the Gilliland surname, the surname of her grandmother and step-grandfather.  June was raised by her grandmother, Mary Ellen (Swafford) Gilliland and her husband, Robert Gilliland, after the death of June's mother, Ida.  There may be records in either Monroe County, Indiana or Owen County, Indiana that would show guardianship that need to be added to my "to-do" list for further research.

     1.2. Marriage license

June was married on June 28, 1917 in Monroe County, Indiana to Clemon Beals Lambertson2,3.  I do not yet have a copy of their marriage license.  It is recorded in Book 16, page 230, according to an index. I have added this to my "to-do" list for further research.

          1.2.1. Marriage notice in newspaper

Will need to search out mention of their wedding in local Bloomington, as well as Noblesville newspapers on my next research trip.

          1.2.2. Anniversary notice

Will need to search out mention of their anniversary in local newspapers, particularly in Elwood.

          1.2.3. Divorce decree

There is no indication that a divorce ever occurred, though a search of the court records has not been completed.

     1.3. Death certificate

June died March 20, 1951 in Elwood, Madison County, Indiana4.  Her death certificate lists the cause of death as "Acute Myocardial Infarction".  The certifying physician was Marion C. Drake, M.D.

          1.3.1. Obituary in newspaper

June's obituary appeared in the March 21, 1951 edition of the Elwood Call-Leader3 and the March 21, 1951 edition of the Alexandria Times-Tribune2.  I need to check and see if there were other newspapers, such as in Anderson, Indiana, that might have also carried her obituary.

          1.3.2. Funeral home record

June's funeral was conducted at the Jackley Funeral Home in Elwood.  I have visited the funeral home and obtained a copy of the record, but have not sourced it in my database yet!  Definitely need to add this to my "to-do" list.

          1.3.3. Tombstone photograph

June's tombstone in the Elwood City Cemetery has been photographed.  It lists her as "Mother"  June K. 1898-1951, and lists "Father" Clemon B. 1898-1994.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1930 Federal Census

On April 10, 1930, June was enumerated in the Clemon Lambertson household in the 2nd Ward, City of Elwood, Pipe Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana5, as June Lambertson, wife, age 31, married, born in Indiana.  Her father and mother were both listed as being born in Indiana.  She listed no occupation, and could read and write and spoke English.  She had been married for 18 years.

          2.1.2. 1920 Federal Census

On January 14, 1920, June was enumerated in the Clemon Lambertson household in the 2nd Ward, City of Elwood, Duck Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana6, as June Lambertson, wife, age 21, married, born in Indiana.  Her father and mother were both listed as being born in Indiana.  She listed no occupation, and could read and write and spoke English.

          2.1.3. 1910 Federal Census

On May 3, 1910, June was enumerated in the Robert F. Gilliland household in Richland Township, Monroe County, Indiana7, as June K. Gilliland, stepdaughter, age 11, born in Indiana.  Her father was listed as being born in the United States and her mother as born in Indiana.  She could read and write.

          2.1.4. 1900 Federal Census

I have been unable to locate June in the 1900 census.  She should be approximately two years old.  I believe that I've located her mother, Ida, at the "Door of Hope" rescue mission in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana in 1900, but no June.  June's sister, Pansy, is enumerated with her grandmother and stepgrandfather, Robert and Mary Gilliland in Clay Township, Owen County, Indiana, but again, no June.  She was either missed or was with some other relative that I've yet to find.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1931.  These however, were merely for the purposes of determining legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agriculture Census Records

I have not yet examined these types of census records to see what information might come to light.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Not applicable, as June was a female.

     3.2. Pension Records

          Not applicable.

     3.3. Service Records

          Not applicable

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Madison County, Indiana.  June spent her adult life in Madison County.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Madison County published a plat map in 1880, 1891, 1893, 1901, 1910, 1915, 1921, 1923, 1931 and 1940 that may be relevant to my search on the Lambertson family.

5. Supplemental records

Supplemental records available to research for June include court records and will and probate records, as well as city directories for Elwood, Indiana.
A search of city directories in the Elwood, Indiana show June at the following address:
     1906 N F Street - 1924, 1925, 1927, 1929, 1931/32, 1935, 1938
     222 North 12th Street - 1945

Descendants of Isaac Lemasters (1795-1841)

Cousin bait through this blog may have paid off again, as I was contacted by someone researching the family of Jacob LeMasters (1832-1905), who they believe is the son of Isaac Lemasters (1795-1841).

Isaac Lemasters (1795-1841) was the son of Jacob and Hannah (________) Lemasters, my paternal 4x great-grandparents.

Isaac was born in Virginia and married Hannah Elizabeth COLEMAN on November 21, 1821 in Shelby County, Ohio.  They had 3 children: Jacob (born circa 1832), Hannah (born circa 1835) and Isaac (born 1837).  So far, I'm only aware of descendants of Isaac.  To find descendants of Jacob would be a great connection to make.

After Isaac's death in 1841 (about January 11) in Allen County, Ohio, the widow Hannah married John B. LOCKHART on July 1, 1841 in Allen County, Ohio.  Together they had three children : Loretta (born circa 1841), James W., and Emeline (born circa 1849).

I've found them in the 1850 census of Union Township, Auglaize County, Ohio, but have not researched them any further.

According to my correspondent, descendants of the family ended up in the Springfield, Illinois area.

FindAGrave Success: John Jacob Deutsch

FindAGrave volunteer Bill Schraeder graciously photographed the tombstone of Corinne's 4x great-grandparents, John Jacob Deutsch (1821-1863) and Dora Elizabeth (Schutte) Deutsch (1827-1903).  They are buried in the Locust Hill Cemetery in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.

John, or Johann, served during the Civil War in Company D, 13th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry.  He was a replacement inductee when the unit was occupying New Orleans.  Previously, John had been drafted into the Confederate Army.

It took a year and a half, but the payoff by this volunteer makes it worth it.

LeMaster Bird Repairs : Salamonia, Indiana (1917)

One of the unusual ephemera finds from my visit to the auction of items from Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana was this cancelled check written to the Montgomery Ward & Co. by J. Murl May drawn on the Peoples Bank.  In the memo field is written "Lemaster Bird Repairs".

Which LeMaster family member was this in reference to?  And what was being repaired?  A birdhouse?  Who knows?  Still, an interesting reference to my family.

Update: Albert Leroy Adams WWI Draft Registration Card

A reader, Gwen Gelesko, contacted me with an update on my post on the World War I draft card for Albert Leroy Adams.  At the time of the post, I could not make out the name of his nearest living relative.  Gwen believes that the response is "Wife Mabel Adams"  The upsweep on the top part of the "f" as well as the downsweep is missing.   What do you think?  I think she is correct.  Thank you!

Pierpont Family in Indianapolis, 1920

Polk's 1920 City Directory, Indianapolis, Indiana

Continuing my research into the PIERPONT family in Indianapolis, the 1920's Polk's Directory at Archive.org listed the following PIERPONTs [h=house, b=boarder].  I have been hoping to find out more about the early years of Harry Pierpont.
Pierpont Clarence M mach h1150 Spruce
Pierpont Cora F clk CCC&StLRy r1150 S Spruce
Pierpont Edw L lab h1722 W Minnesota
Pierpont Esther A (wid Jno T) h1742 W Morris
Pierpont Ezra uphlr h1537 Draper
Pierpont Frank H mach r1742 W Morris
Pierpont Gilbert engr h2113 W Morris
Pierpont Wm E elect r967 King av
Pierpont Wm R fnshr h2812 Schofield av

The unidentified Clarence and Cora Pierpont remain at the same address they lived in the 1919 directory.  Their relationship to the other Pierponts hasn't been established.

The Edward L. Pierpont is believed to be the son of John T. and Hester Pierpont, and younger brother of Harry's father, Joseph Gilbert.

The Esther A. Pierpont is the same as Hester Pierpont, Harry's grandmother, and widow of John T. Pierpont.  In 1919 directory, John T. was alive at the same address.

The Ezra Pierpont is believed to be another son of John T. and Hester Pierpont, and brother of Joseph Gilbert, Harry's father.

The Frank H. Pierpont is another son of John T. and Hester Pierpont, the younger brother of Harry's father.  In the 1919 directory, he was listed as being in the U.S. Army.

The Gilbert Pierpont listed as an engineer is Harry's father, Joseph Gilbert Pierpont.  There is a gap between his appearance in 1920 Indianapolis, but not in the city after 1912, the last city directory that listed him.

The remaining Pierponts, William E. and William R., remain unidentified, though they appear in the 1919 directory at the same address.

Exploratory Data Analysis : Cora Belle (Metzner) Haley (1868-1955)

Cora Belle (Metzner) Haley was my paternal great-grandmother.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical facts I have discovered about her.

1. Vital records

     1.1. Birth certificate

Cora was born August 21, 1868 in Jay County, Indiana1. The State of Indiana didn't require statewide registrations of births until after 1907.  Prior to this date, they were only recorded in the counties where the event occurred.  The W.P.A. indexed births in Indiana after 1882.

          1.1.1. Birth notice in newspaper

If Cora's birth was recorded in a local newspaper, it has been lost to history.  The Jay County Public Library has newspapers from the late 1880s, and the holdings of the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis do not indicate any newspapers of the period.

          1.1.2. Bible record

I am not aware of any surviving Bible records of the Metzner family.

          1.1.3. Baptismal record

The Metzner's were members of the Evangelical Assocation, but I do not know of any baptismal records.

          1.1.4. Adoption record

There is no indication that Cora was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage license

Cora was married on July 21, 1888 in Jay County, Indiana to Eli Weldon Haley2.

          1.2.1. Marriage notice in newspaper

I have not searched in newspapers of Jay County, Indiana to see if mention was made of Cora and Eli's nuptials.  Have added this to my "to-do" list for my next research trip.

          1.2.2. Anniversary notice

Though I have copies of anniversary notices from the newspapers, they are not sourced, and I need to add that to my "to-do" list.  Need to determine if the notices come from the Portland Commercial-Review or the Graphic.

          1.2.3. Divorce decree

There is no indication that a divorce ever occurred, and a recent search of court records during the time period did not turn up a divorce.

     1.3. Death certificate

Cora died April 28, 1955 in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana1.  I need to obtain a copy of her official death certificate from the Jay County Health Department.  According to her obituary, she died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Clarence (Vera) Stuber.

          1.3.1. Obituary in newspaper

Cora's obituary appeared in the April 29, 1955 edition of the Portland Commercial-Review3.

          1.3.2. Funeral home record

The funeral home record was the subject of a previous post.  Cora died at 6:40 p.m. and was 86 years of age.  She was buried in the Mt. Zion cemetery and her casket was manufactured by Hutton.

          1.3.3. Tombstone photograph

Cora's tombstone in the Mt. Zion cemetery has been photographed.  It lists her as Cora B. 1868-1957, and her husband, Eli W. 1866-1957, is also listed4.

2. Census records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1930 Federal Census

On April 11, 1930, Cora was enumerated in the Eli W. Haley household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana5 as Cora B. Haley, wife, age 62, born in Indiana.  She was aged 19 at her marriage and could read and write.  Both her parents were born in Ohio.  She could speak English and listed no occupation.

          2.1.2. 1920 Federal Census

On January 2, 1920, Cora was enumerated in the Eli W. Haley household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana6 as Cora B. Haley, wife, age 51, born in Indiana.  Both her parents were born in Ohio.  She could read and write and speak English.

          2.1.3. 1910 Federal Census

On April 16, 1910, Cora was enumerated in the Eli W. Haley household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana7 as Cora B. Haley, wife, age 41, born in Indiana.  She had been married for 21 years and was the mother of 6 children, 4 of whom were living.  Both her parents were born in Ohio.  She could read and write and speak English.

          2.1.4. 1900 Federal Census

On June 16, 1900, Cora was enumerated in the Eli W. Haley household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana8 as Cora B. Haley, wife, age 30, born August 1869 in Indiana.  She had been married for 11 years and was the mother of 3 children, 2 of whom were living.  Both her parents were born in Ohio.  She could read and write and speak English.

          2.1.5. 1880 Federal Census

One June 23, 1880, Cora was enumerated in the John A. Metzner household in Wayne Township, Jay County, Indiana9 as Cora B. Metzner, age 11, single, born in Indiana.  She had attended school within the year.  Her parents were both born in Ohio.

          2.1.6. 1870 Federal Census

On July 4, 1870, Cora was enumerated in the John A. Metzner household in Wayne Township, Jay County, Indiana10 as Cora Metzner, age 1, born in Indiana.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1931.  These however, were merely for the purposes of determining legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what information might be shed on the Haley farm.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Being female, these types of records do not apply.

     3.2. Pension Records

There is no indication that her husband ever served in the military.  However, her father did serve in the Civil War, and there may be mention of her in his pension application.

     3.3. Service Records

          Not applicable.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records need to be searched more thoroughly in Jay County, Indiana.  The family lived most of their lives in Noble Township, though did live in Madison Township for awhile.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Jay County published a plat map in 1874, 1881, 1887, 1901, 1910 and 1920 that may be relevant to my search for Cora.

5. Supplemental records

Supplemental records available to research for Cora include county/city directories, court records and will and probate records.  Searching these will be on my next "to-do" list research trip to Jay County.
