Elias P. Snyder (1859-1891), Delaware County, Indiana

Working on filling in some gaps in my database by utilizing the "Indiana Marriages, 1811-1959" database at Familysearch.org to see what updates and corrections I could find.

Elias P. Snyder (1859-1891) was the son of Edwin Clark Anthony and Amanda (Groenendyke) Snyder.  His marriage on October 6, 1877 in Delaware County, Indiana was found in the database.  I have the surname as Snyder in my database, but the record clearly spells the alternative Snider.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if I can find mention of William's death.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Once I've located an obituary for William, will see if the funeral home is mentioned and then contact them for additional information.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

William's tombstone in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana1 has been photographed.  His tombstone lists his death date as March 4, 1879, and states he was 12 years, 4 months and 8 days old.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1870 Federal Census

On July 4, 1870, William was enumerated in the John A. Metzner household in Wayne Township, Jay County, Indiana2, as William Metzner, age 3, born in Indiana.

Amer Jackson Beals (1818-1862), Randolph County, Indiana

Working on filling in some gaps in my database by utilizing the "Indiana Marriages, 1811-1959" database at Familysearch.org to see what updates and corrections I could find.

Amer Jackson Beals (1818-1862) was the son of Daniel and Catherine (Jackson) Beals.  His marriage on October 16, 1842 in Randolph County, Indiana to Harriett Higginbotham was found in the database.  Harriett's surname is spelled both Higginbotham and Hickingbothum in the same document.  Prior to this find, I had the date of their wedding incorrectly as October 12th.

"Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1959," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5P7-8KQ : accessed 14 Oct 2013), Amer J Beals and Harriet Hickingbothum, 1842.
Amer's second marriage, also in Randolph County, Indiana, was on August 11, 1857 to Matilda H. Nolin.  Prior to finding this in the database, I did not have the date or location of their marriage.  I also had her name as Matilda Nolan Quick.  That could be a surname from a previous marriage, but the record clearly shows her surname as Nolin.

"Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1959," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5PQ-G5T : accessed 14 Oct 2013), Amer J Beals and Matilda H Nolins, 1857.

Amer was my maternal fourth cousin six times removed.  Our common ancestors were John Beals and Mary Clayton.  Amer died April 16, 1862 in Nashville, Tennessee.  Not sure at this point if he was a Civil War casualty.

L-R: Arthur E. Graves, Cledith O. Graves, Carrie Mae (Haley) Graves

1. Vital Records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

Carrie was born January 4, 1877 in Liberty Township, Seneca County, Ohio1.  The State of Ohio did not require the keeping of birth records until 1867.  State law required the probate court to keep these records from 1867 to 1908, according to the Ohio Historical Society webpage.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If Carrie's birth was recorded in a newspaper, I have not yet discovered it.   There are editions of the Sandusky Register in existence, and that is one avenue of research in the future.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am not aware of any surviving Bible record of the Haley family.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one does exist.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

The Haleys were members of the Evangelical Association.  I am not aware of any baptismal record for Carrie at this time.

Later, Carrie was associated with the Church of Daniel's Band in Marine City, Michigan.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no evidence that Carrie was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

Carrie married secondly September 25, 1924 in Midland, Midland County, Michigan to Elam Gifford Booth4.  A copy of their marriage license was the subject of a previous post.

Carrie married thirdly to Sidney Marks between 1940 and her death.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of Carrie and Arthur's nuptials and Carrie and Elam's nuptials.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if there was any mention of anniversary celebrations.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

There is no indication that Carrie was ever divorced, but a thorough search of court records in Midland County, Michigan needs to be completed.

     1.3. Death Certificate

Carried died in 1956, according to my database, but this fact does not contain a source.  Her tombstone states 1955.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Will need to search contemporary newspapers in Midland, Michigan area to see if I can locate an obituary for Carrie.  Will add this to my list of 'to-do' items.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Once I have a copy of Carrie's obituary, I can contact the funeral home mentioned and see if they have any additional records of Carrie's funeral.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Carrie is buried in the Midland Cemetery, Midland, Midland County Michigan5, next to her first husband, Arthur.  Her memorial on the FindAGrave website is here.

On April 1, 1940, Carrie was enumerated in the Mark Langell household in Marine City, St. Clair County, Michigan6, as Carrie Booth, widow, age 63.  She is listed as 'sister' to the head of household, but I believe this is more in the spiritual sense (Christian), as all were members of the Church of Daniel's Band.  Her residence in 1935 was Seneca County, Ohio. She had completed the 8th grade in education.  She owned her home valued at $1000.  Her address was 246 Bruce Street.

          2.1.2. 1930 Federal Census

On May 27, 1930, Carrie was enumerated in the Elam G. Booth household in Marine City, St. Clair County, Michigan7, as Carrie M. Graves, wife, age 23.  She was born January 1877 in Ohio.  Both of her parents were born in Ohio.  She had been married for 5 years and was the mother of 1 child, still living.  She could read and write and spoke English.  No occupation was listed.

I have not yet investigated these types of records to see what light they might shed on the Haley farm.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Not applicable, as Carrie was female.

     3.2. Pension Records

I am not aware of any military service by Carrie's husbands or father that would have made her eligible for military benefits.

Not applicable, as Carrie was female.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Boater Bales (1838-1900), Henry County, Indiana

Working on filling in some gaps in my database by utilizing the "Indiana Marriages, 1811-1959" database at Familysearch.org to see what updates and corrections I could find.

Boater Bales (1838-1900) was the son of Aaron and Susannah (Russell) Bales.  His first name is likely a corruption of the Quaker surname Bowater.  However, it is clearly spelled Boader Bales in the marriage record found in Henry County, Indiana on March 24, 1864 in the database.  His wife's name is spelled 'Suphrona' Cory, rather than Saphrona Cory, which is how I had her in the database.  Prior to this find, I had the date of their marriage, but not the place.

Boater was my maternal third cousin six times removed.  Our common ancestors were John Beals and Sarah Bowater.  He died in 1900 in Blue River Township, Henry County, Indiana.  I have not researched the family further.

Exploratory Data Analysis: Charles Wesley Haley (1872-1893)

Charles Wesley Haley (1872-1893) was my paternal great-granduncle.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about him.

1. Vital Records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

Charles was born August 19, 1872 in Medina County, Ohio1.  The State of Ohio did not require the keeping of birth records until 1867.  State law required the probate court to keep these records from 1867 to 1908, according to the Ohio Historical Society webpage.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If Charles' birth was recorded in a newspaper, I have not yet discovered it.

The Haley's were members of the Evangelical Association.  I am not aware of any baptismal record for Charles at this time.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no evidence that Charles was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

There are no indications that Charles was ever married.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

               Not applicable.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

               Not applicable.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

               Not applicable.

     1.3. Death Certificate

Charles died August 23, 1893 in Jay County, Indiana2.  I do not yet have a copy of his death certificate.  Will add this to my list of 'to-do' items for my next research trip to Jay County.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Charles' obituary appeared in the Portland, Indiana Weekly Commercial on September 14, 18932.  His obituary stated that he was born in Wayne County, Ohio.  No cause of death was listed.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Will need to check with the Williamson & Spencer Funeral Home in Portland, Indiana to see if they have any additional records on Charles' funeral, other than what has been published.  Will add this to my list of 'to-do' items for my next research trip.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

I do not yet have a photograph of Charles' tombstone.  I would imagine that he would have been buried at the Mt. Zion cemetery in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana with other members of his family.  Will add this to my list of 'to-do' items for my next research trip.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1880 Federal Census

On June 22, 1880, Charles was enumerated in the George W. Haley household in Liberty Township, Seneca County, Ohio3, as Charles W. Haley, son, age 7.  He was born in Ohio, as were his mother and father.  He had attended school within the year.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1931.  These, however, were merely for the purposes of legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what light they might shed on the Haley farm.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

          Not applicable.

     3.2. Pension Records

Not applicable, as I am not aware of any military service by Charles or his father that would have made him eligible for military benefits.

     3.3. Service Records

          Not applicable.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Jay County, Indiana to see what records might mention Charles.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Jay County, Indiana published a plat map in 1874, 1881, 1887, 1901, 1910 and 1920 that might be relevant to my search for Charles.  I have access to the 1887 map, and need to research them to see what they show.

5. Supplemental Records

Supplemental records to search for Charles include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my 'to-do' list for my next research trip.
