Family Milestones: April 20th

My paternal great grandaunt Edith Mabel LeMASTERS, married on this date in 1910 in Jay County, Indiana to Henry MEINHOLTZ.  Edith was the daughter of Luman Walker and Mary Keziah (CHEW) LEMASTERS, and the younger sister of my Luman Cooper LeMASTERSEdith was born September 24, 1879 in Jay County, Indiana.  Henry was born July 9, 1875.  They had 4 children and lived in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Henry died January 20, 1948.  Edith died July 27, 1949.  

My maternal 3rd-great granduncle, John Vorhees LAMBERTSON, married on this date in 1882 in Farmland, Randolph County, Indiana to Annie E. OLIVER.  John was the son of John and Sarah (WILLSON) LAMBERTSON, and the older brother of my Carey Wilson LAMBERTSON.  Annie was the daughter of William OLIVER.  Annie was born August 1853 in Ohio.  John was born August 17, 1833 in Belvidere, Warren County, New Jersey.  He was a wagonmaker and carpenter, and served in Company D, 88th Regiment Ohio Infantry during the Civil War.  They had 1 son.  Annie died May 1, 1901 in Hamilton, Ohio.  John died August 30, 1914 in Farmersville, Montgomery County, Ohio.


My paternal 3rd-great granduncle, Adam YOUNG, was born on this date in 1820.  Adam was the son of Phillip and Nancy Ann (McLANE) YOUNG, and the younger brother of my Nancy YOUNG.  Adam married March 11, 1841 to Mary NOLAND.  They had at least one son.  Adam died December 10, 1893.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 4th-great granduncle, Robert Haines WOOLSTON, was born on this date in 1798 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Robert was the son of Samuel and Hannah (HAINES) WOOLSTON, and the older brother of my Rachel WOOLSTON.  Robert married Annette Maris HARRISON.  Annette was born in 1801.  They had 7 children.  Annette died February 20, 1887 in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey.  Robert died November 20, 1852 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Nothing further is known at this time.

Family Milestones: March 20th

My maternal 6th-great grandfather, Nicholas GROENENDYKE, was born on this date in 1749 in Kingston, Middlesex County, New Jersey, the son of Johannes and Sarah Ann (LAKE) GROENENDYKE.  Johannes was married twice, to Violette STORY and Catherine KIPLE.  I do not know which is the mother of my ancestor, James.  Nicholas died February 1808.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Susannah YOUNG, was born on this date in 1818.  Susannah was the daughter of Phillip and Nancy Ann (McLANE) YOUNG, and the younger sister of my Nancy YOUNG.  Susannah married February 1835 to William REED.  I do not have dates of birth or death for William.  Susannah died February 17, 1878.  Nothing further is known at this time.

Family Milestones: March 11th

My paternal 3rd-great grandfather, Luman Walker LEMASTERS Sr., was born on this date in 1808 in Mason County, Virginia.  Luman was the son of Jacob and Hannah (________) LEMASTERS.  Luman married January 19, 1832 in Shelby County, Ohio to Nancy YOUNG.  Nancy was born June 2, 1812 in Pickaway County, Ohio, daughter of Phillip and Nancy Ann (McLANE) YOUNG.  They moved from Shelby County, Ohio to Jay County, Indiana circa 1854 and raised 11 children.  Luman was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal church.  Nancy died August 26, 1904 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.  Luman died April 15, 1888 in Jay County, Indiana.  Both are buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.

My paternal 3rd-great granduncle, Adam YOUNG, was married on this date in 1841 to Mary NOLAND.  Adam was born April 20, 1820, the son of Phillip and Nancy Ann (McLANE) YOUNG, and the younger brother of my Nancy YOUNG.  I do not have dates of birth or death for Mary.  They had at least 1 son.  Adam died December 10, 1893.  Nothing further is known at this time.


My paternal 4th-great granduncle, Nathan CHEW, was married on this date in 1819 to Sarah WARD.  Nathan was born November 24, 1789 in Gloucester County, New Jersey, the son of Nathaniel and Sarah (SPRINGER) CHEW.  I do not have dates of birth or death for Sarah.  Nathan died July 28, 1890.  Nothing further is known at this time.


My maternal 5th-great grandparents, Thomas HEATON and Susan TAYLOR, were married on this date in 1789 in Faquier County, Virginia.  Thomas was born in 1761 in Harper's Ferry, Virginia, the son of John and Abigail (PAXTON) HEATON.  I do not have dates of birth or death for Susan.  They had 6 children and lived in Brown County, Ohio.  Thomas died September 17, 1858 in Brown County, Ohio.

My paternal 7th-great (and 8th-great) grandparents, John MAXSON and Judith CLARKE, were married on this date in 1687 in Westerly, Rhode Island.  John was the son of Rev. John and Mary (MOSHER) MAXSON.  Judith was the daughter of Joseph and Bethiah (HUBBARD) CLARKE.  John was born October 12, 1666 in Westerly, Rhode Island.  Judith was born October 12, 1667 in Newport, Rhode Island.  They had 10 children. John died October 28, 1748.  Judith died July 17, 1747 at Westerly, Rhode Island.

My paternal 3rd-great grandparents, Luman Walker LEMASTERS Sr. and Nancy YOUNG, were married on this date in 1832 in Shelby County, Ohio.  Luman was the son of Jacob and Hannah (________) LEMASTERS.  Nancy was the daughter of Phillip and Nancy Ann (McLANE) YOUNG.  Luman was born March 11, 1808 in Mason County, Virginia.  Nancy was born June 2, 1812 in Pickaway County, Ohio.  They raised 11 children in Shelby County, Ohio and Jay County, Indiana.  Luman died April 15, 1888 in Jay County, Indiana.  Nancy died August 26, 1904 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.

My paternal 5th-great granduncle, Nathan DAVIS, married on this date in 1761 to Ann GIFFORD.  Nathan was the son of Thomas William and Tacy (CRANDALL) DAVIS, and the younger brother of my Elisabeth DAVIS.  Nathan was born May 9, 1740 in Westerly, Rhode Island.  Ann was born January 17, 1742.  They had 14 children.  Ann died in 1820.  Nathan died before October 17, 1814 in Salem, Harrison County, Virginia.

Family Milestones : November 2nd

My paternal great-great grandfather, William P. WEHRLY, was born on this date back in 1845 in Preble County, Ohio, the son of Johannes (John S.) and Barbara (PETRY) WEHRLY. William was the youngest of the family of nine children. Not too long after he was born the family moved across the state line into Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana. William was a man of many talents - his occupations were listed as farmer, mortician and sawmiller. He served in the Civil War in Company I, 130th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he married Olive Jane SMITH on August 4, 1866 in Jay County, Indiana. They lived out their lives on the farm in Madison Township where William died on June 16, 1909. He is buried in the Salamonia Cemetery there.

My maternal great-great granduncle, James WRIGHT, married Clara B. HICKS on this date back in 1895 in Madison County, Indiana. James was the son of Joseph W. and Rebecca Ann (HEATON) WRIGHT and the younger brother of my John William WRIGHT. James was the first member of the Wright family to be born in Madison County, Indiana after the move from Brown County, Ohio, being born in 1868. James was a farmer of Monroe Township, living out his entire life there. He died October 14, 1936 in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana and is buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery there.

My paternal 3rd-great granduncle, Stephen M. YOUNG, married Mary WOODRUFF on this date back in 1847. My data is sketchy on this event, but it probably occurred in Shelby County, Ohio. Stephen was the youngest son of Phillip and Nancy Ann (McLANE) YOUNG, the younger brother of my Nancy YOUNG. Stephen had been born April 27, 1845 and died January 25, 1903. More research in the census records needs to be done to further research his life.

Tombstone Tuesday: Luman Walker and Nancy (Young) Lemasters




My paternal 3rd-great grandparents, Luman Walker and Nancy (YOUNG) LEMASTERS, are buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.

Luman was born March 11, 1808 in Mason County, Virginia (now West Virginia), the son of Jacob and Hannah (________) LEMASTERS.

Nancy was born August 26, 1904 in Pickaway County, Ohio, the daughter of Philip and Nancy Ann (McLANE) YOUNG.

Luman and Nancy were married on January 19, 1832 in Shelby County, Ohio. They lived in Shelby County, Ohio until around 1854 when they purchased land in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana and settled there. Luman was a farmer and a Methodist Episcopal minister.

Luman died on April 15, 1888 in Jay County, Indiana and Nancy followed him on August 26, 1904 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.

Luman and Nancy were the parents of the following children, all but John were born in Shelby County, Ohio:

  • Phebe Jane Lemasters (1847-aft1873) married William R. WILSON
  • Mary Lemasters (1849-1929) married John PETRY; 2 children
  • Martha Julesa Lemasters (1852-1936) married William W. LOOFBOURROW; 5 children

Luman Walker Lemasters Sr. (b. March 11, 1808)

Today's featured relative in my database is my paternal 3rd-great grandfather, Luman Walker Lemasters.

Luman was born March 11, 1808 in Mason Co., VA (now WV), the son of Jacob and Hannah (________) Lemasters. Luman married January 19, 1832 in Shelby Co., OH to Nancy Young, daughter of Phillip and Nancy Ann (McLane) Young. Nancy was born June 2, 1812 in Pickaway Co., OH, and died August 26, 1904 in Salamonia, Jay Co., IN. Luman died April 15, 1888 in Jay Co., IN. Both are buried in the Salamonia Cemetery.

Luman was a farmer and Methodist Episcopal minister. His residence in the 1840 & 1850 census was in Shelby Co., OH, and the family moved to Jay Co., IN. around 1854.

Today's featured relative in my database is my paternal 4th great-grandfather, Phillip Young.

Phillip was born October 11, 1787 in Berkeley Co., VA (now WVA), the son of Charles and Catherine Elizabeth (Kint) Young. Phillip married ca. 1806 to Nancy Ann McLane, daughter of Jacob McLane. Nancy was born ca. 1790 Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., VA (now WVA) and died May 1825. Phillip married secondly on July 30, 1826 in Pickaway Co., OH to Keziah Curtis. Keziah was born April 11, 1808 in Pickaway Co., OH and died February 16, 1891 in Shelby Co., OH. Phillip died May 29, 1850 in Shelby Co., OH.

Phillip was a veteran of the War of 1812 and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Catherine was born July 29, 1768 in Germany. She married Charles Young who was born April 1757 in Germany and died 1848 in Berkeley Co., VA (now WVA.) Catherine died April 17, 1841 in Auglaize Co., OH.
