Family Milestones: February 13th

My paternal 5th-great grandaunt, Charlotte HAINES, married on this date in Burlington County, New Jersey to Michael WOOLSTON.  Charlotte was the daughter of Robert and Rachel (VENICOMB) HAINES, and the older sister of my Hannah HAINES.  Charlotte was born January 21, 1768 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Michael was the son of Jacob and Sarah (GOSLING) WOOLSTON.  They had 4 children.  Michael died in 1817.  Charlotte died August 24, 1821 in Burlington County, New Jersey.

My paternal 4th-great grandaunt, Sarah SHERRICK, married on this date in 1816 to Samuel SAILOR.  Sarah was the daughter of David and Barbara (ERB) SHIRK, and the sister of my David SHERRICK.    Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal great grandaunt, Ida Laura WEHRLY, was born on this date in 1883 in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana.  Ida was the daughter of William P. and Olive Jane (SMITH) WEHRLY, and the younger sister of my Barbara Isabel WEHRLY.  Ida married December 30, 1903 to Edward SCHOLER.  Ida died December 15, 1963.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 2nd-great grandmother, Mary Keziah CHEW, was born on this date in 1847 in Mt. Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey.  Mary was the daughter of Dr. Ezekiel Cooper and Caroline Bishop (WOOLSTON) CHEW.  Mary married October 2, 1864 at Versailles, Darke County, Ohio to Luman Walker LeMASTERS.  Luman was born October 19, 1842 in Shelby County, Ohio, the son of Luman Walker and Nancy (YOUNG) LEMASTERS.  They lived in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana and raised 11 children.  Luman died November 18, 1931 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.  Mary died February 22, 1927 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.  Both are buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.

Family Milestones: January 22nd

My maternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Nancy HEATON, was married on this date in 1871 in Lancaster, Schuyler County, Missouri to John Porter WARNER.  Nancy was the daughter of James R. and Elizabeth (JACOBS) HEATON, and the younger sister of my Rebecca Ann HEATON.  Nancy was born in 1854 in Brown County, Ohio.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 5th-great grandaunt, Elizabeth SHIRK, was born on this date in 1740.  Elizabeth was the daughter of Ulrich and Anna (SWARR) SCHERCH, and the sister of my David SHIRK.  Elizabeth married John FUNK.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 4th-great grandaunt, Hannah JACOBS, was born on this date in 1772 in Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania.  Hannah was the daughter of Michael and Margaret (________) JACOBS, and the younger sister of my David JACOBS.  Hannah died November 22, 1834.

Family Milestones: January 20th

My paternal 6th-great grandaunt, Mabel HURLBUT, was married on this date in 1763 to Elijah BENEDICT.  Mabel was the daughter of Moses and Rebecca (WARNER) HURLBUT, and the older sister of my Israel HURLBUT.  Mabel was baptisted October 8, 1763 in Woodbury, Connecticut.  I do not know the dates of birth or parentage for Elijah.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 5th-great grandaunt, Maria SHIRK, was married on this date in 1780 to George FRANTZ.  Maria was the daughter of Ulrich and Anna (SCHWARR) SCHERCH, and the older sister of my David SHIRK.  Nothing further is known at this time.

Mary Jane (Sherrick) Haley (1844-1916)

Mary Jane (SHERRICK) HALEY (1844-1916) was my paternal 2nd-great grandmother.  The SHERRICK/SHIRK/SCHERCH/SCHURCH family has Swiss origins.

The following facts about Mary's life are known:
  • Birth: She was born January 13, 1844 in Ashland County, Ohio, the daughter of David and Susan (JACOBS) SHERRICK.
  • Marriage: She married George Washington HALEY on October 14, 1862 in Ashland County, Ohio.
  • Marriage: She married Robert E. KIMBLE on May 8, 1897 in Jay County, Indiana.
  • Census: 1900 - she appears in the Robert E. KIMBLE household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana.  Mother of 7 children, 6 living.
  • Death: She died January 15, 1916 in Jay County, Indiana.
  • Burial: She is buried at the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana
  • Obituary: Her obituary appears in the January 15, 1916 edition of The Commercial Review, Portland, Indiana.

Tombstone Tuesday: Ezekiel Copper & Jane (Riddle) Chew




My paternal third great-grandfather, Dr. Ezekiel Cooper Chew and his third wife, Mary Jane (RIDDLE) (ADAMS) (KEISER) SHIRK, are buried in the Lakeville Cemetery, St. Joseph's County, Indiana.


Ezekiel was born January 17, 1822 in Gloucester County, New Jersey, the son of Rev. Nathaniel and Mary (WEST) CHEW.


Mary Jane was born December 28, 1845 in St. Joseph's County, Indiana, the daughter of Wiley and Miranda M. (PRICE) RIDDLE.

Ezekiel died August 27, 1888 in St. Joseph's County, Indiana. Mary Jane died in 1921. After Ezekiel's death, she had married Simon KEISER on September 7, 1889 in St. Joseph's County, Indiana. This marriage ended in divorce, and she married Hiram SHIRK circa 1894.

Ezekiel's occupation was that of a medical doctor. He graduated from Jefferson College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served as a doctor for many years in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.

Ezekiel's first wife, Caroline Bishop WOOLSTON (1826-1879) was my 3rd-great grandmother. After her death, Ezekiel remarried to the widow Laura SKAGGS, and after her death married Mary Jane RIDDLE.

Hiram Shirk household - St. Joseph Co., IN

The Hiram R. SHIRK household appears in the 1900 census of Liberty Twp., St. Joseph Co., IN. Hiram was the fourth husband of Mary Jane RIDDLE, who was the widow of my maternal 3rd-great grandfather, Ezekiel Cooper CHEW. I have not been able to yet determine Hiram's connection with my other SHIRK/SHERRICK relatives.

Hiram appears as 60 year old farmer, born May 1840 in Pennsylvania, with both parents born in Pennsylvania. He could read and write and had been married for 6 years. Wife Mary was aged 54, born December 1845 in Indiana, with her father born in Tennessee and mother born in Ohio. Hiram's step-son, Wiley CHEW, aged 11, born June 1888 in Indiana, was attending school. There was a servant living in the household, Harry ALBERT, aged 19, born in Indiana.

David Sherrick household - Ashland Co., OH

The David SHERRICK family appears in the 1870 census of Vermillion Twp., Ashland Co., OH. David was my paternal fourth great-grandfather, the son of David and Barbara (ERB) SHIRK.

David is listed as an 80 year-old farmer, born in Pennsylvania, with real estate valued at $5040 and a personal estate valued at $1620. His granddaughter, Amanda, aged 26, born in Ohio, was also living with him during this census.

Today in my database ; Barbara Grundbacher (b. November 5, 1672)

Today's featured relative in my database is my paternal 7th-great grandmother, Barbara Grundbacher.

Barbara was born November 5, 1672 in Sumiswald, Switzerland, the daughter of Michael and Anna (Brand) Grundbacher. Barbara married circa 1695 to Ulrich Schürch, the son of Peter Schürch and Verena Eggimann. Ulrich was born March 9, 1662/63 in Sumiswald, Switzerland and died circa 1739 in Lancaster Co., PA. I do not have a death date for Barbara.

This family was Mennonite and emigrated to Philadelphia, PA on August 23, 1728 on the ship Mortenhouse. The spelling of the family name varies as : Scherch, Shirk, etc.
