Clara (Cook) Lambertson (1848-1943) : Sunday's Obituary

Clara Lambertson obit, Elwood Call-Leader, January 23, 1943

Source: Elwood Call-Leader, Elwood, Indiana, January 23, 1943, p. 1

FORMER RESIDENT DIES AT ATLANTA

Mrs. Lambertson Stricken At Home Of Daughter

Mrs. Clara Lambertson, 94, formerly of Elwood, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Omer Whisler, west of Atlanta, Saturday morning.  She was the wedow [sic] of Cary Lambertson.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Maude Hayes of Mount Vernon, Ill., Mrs. Lola Whisler of Atlanta, at whose home she died, and two sons, Charles Lambertson of Summitville, and Bert Lambertson of Indianapolis.  There are 13 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

She and her family came to Elwood when it was known as Quincy.  It was reported that she remembered when Lincoln was president, and that she came from Virginia to Ohio in a covered wagon with hehr [sic] parents.

The body was removed to the Schaffer funeral home in Arcadia and the funeral was held Monday morning at the Dunkard church with burial following in City cemetery here.

----
Clara (COOK) LAMBERTSON was my maternal 3rd-great grandmother.  Her obituary is one that I recently rediscovered when searching at the Elwood library.

Some interesting comments were made in the obituary, particularly that her family came from Virginia to Ohio in a covered wagon and that she remembered Lincoln as president.

Clara would have been around 13 years old when the Civil War began, so yes, she could have remembered Lincoln.  Whether she was born in Ohio or Virginia is disputed, as the census records state she was born in Ohio.  I have not yet located her marriage record, though it was supposedly October 1, 1869 in Butler County, Ohio.  No record has been located in Butler or surrounding counties.

The family was definitely in Butler County, Ohio in the 1870 census, which remains the earliest documented record I have for Clara.  The town of Elwood, Indiana was originally known as Quincy, and became known as Elwood in 1869.

Surname Saturday : COOK

The COOK surname is in my maternal line.  No connection has been found to the COOK line in Eileen's family. The origins of the surname are unknown at this time.

Stories and history:

Ahnentafel # 57: Clara Cook (1848-1943).  Clara was born November 16, 1848 in Ohio.  She married October 1, 1869 in Butler County, Ohio to Carey W. Lambertson (1847-1918).  Carey was born April 29, 1847 in Butler County, Ohio.  They raised 5 children in Hamilton and Madison Counties, Indiana, where Carey was a farmer.  Carey died March 18, 1918 in Elwood, Madison County, Indiana.  After his death, Clara lived with various relatives, being counted in 1920 and 1930 census records living with daughter, Maud. Clara died January 23, 1943 in Atlanta, Hamilton County, Indiana.  Both are buried in the Elwood City Cemetery, Elwood, Madison County, Indiana.

Ahnentafel # 114: William Cook.  Clara's death certificate in Hamilton County lists her parents as William Cook, born in Virginia and ____ Hirharger, born in Virginia.  I have not been able to verify this information.  I've been unsuccessful in locating Clara in the 1850 census in Ohio, where later census records indicate she was born.  I've tried variations of the Cook name, including German spellings of Koch, hoping to find her there.

Fearless Females: Family Document

March 9 — Take a family document (baptismal certificate, passenger list, naturalization petition, etc.) and write a brief narrative using the information.

Above is the death certificate I received from the Hamilton County, Indiana Health Department for my maternal 3rd-great grandmother, Clara (COOK) LAMBERTSON.

Clara died January 23, 1943 early in the morning, 7:00 a.m.  It was a Saturday morning.  Her place of death was Atlanta, a tiny town in Hamilton County.  At age 94, she was most likely living with her daughter and son-in-law, Lola and Omer WHISLER.  Clara's husband had long since passed, back in 1918, and Clara had been bouncing around from one family member to the next.  The 1930 census had her living in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County, Indiana with her daughter Maud.  By 1932, she was back in Anderson, Madison County, Indiana living with her son, Bert, where she suffered a broken hip.  Newspaper reports in 1933 had her staying with Lola.

Two days after passing, Clara was laid to rest in the Elwood City Cemetery, Elwood, Madison County, Indiana next to her husband, Carey.

An intriguing clue was given on the backside of the death certificate, listing Clara's parents :

I have not been able to verify or rule out these as potential parents for Clara, nor find her in the 1850 census in Ohio.
