FindAGrave Success: Nathan C. Beals

So glad to report a success from a FindAGrave volunteer, Richard M.C.P. Mann, who was able to capture the image of the tombstone of my maternal 5th-great grandfather, Nathan C. BEALS (1789-1867) from the Lynchburg Cemetery in Humboldt, Richardson County, Nebraska.

Nathan was born within the confines of Lost Creek Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends in Jefferson County, Tennessee, the son of John and Mary (CARTER) BEALS, on 9th month, 3rd day of 1789.  His middle initial "C." may stand for "Carter", though unconfirmed.  A birthright Quaker, he was said to have been disowned circa 1810-1811 by an Ohio meeting.  This story was reported in the "Chronology of the Beals Family", written by his son John T. BEALS, but has yet to be confirmed through original records.

Nathan later became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, no doubt influenced by his wife, Elizabeth CHEW (1802-1881).  They were married in November 25, 1820 in Clinton County, Ohio and were the parents of ten children: Daniel, Mary Ann Maria, Andrew, John T., Sarah, Amy, Nathan H., Thomas J., Elizabeth, and Seth W.  My ancestor is their third son, John T.

Nathan was elected as County Assessor of Hamilton County, Indiana in the 1840s and lived in both Hamilton and Howard County, Indiana before moving west to Richardson County, Nebraska after the Civil War.  It was there that he died September 5, 1867 and was buried.  His widow, Elizabeth, moved back to Indiana were she died January 26, 1881 in Converse, Miami County, Indiana.

Surname Saturday: Ivey

The IVEY surname appears in Eileen's paternal line.  The surname has been found to be spelled IVY, IVIE, etc. in the records.  There has been some speculation that Eileen's grandmother, Bessie Lee IVEY, has Indian blood, though nothing has been found to confirm this.

Stories and History:

Ahnentafel # 20: George W. IVEY.  George and his wife, Rebecca HARROLD, were listed as the parents of Samuel IVEY on his marriage record.  Rebecca's surname has been also spelled HARRELL in some records.

Ahnentafel # 10: Samuel IVEY (c1868-1953).  Samuel was born circa 1868 in Kentucky.  Samuel married Emma E. CARTER on February 26, 1896 in Massac County, Illinois.  Emma was born circa 1880-1886 in either Alabama, Arkansas or Kentucky (census records disagree).  The family lived in Graves and Marshall Counties, Kentucky and Lawrence and Poinsett Counties, Arkansas in the census records.  Samuel died May 25, 1953 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri and is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Poplar Bluff.

Ahnentafel # 5: Bessie Lee IVEY (1900-2003).  Bessie was born July 8, 1900 in Paducah, McCracken County, Kentucky.  Bessie married St. Patrick Merlin CUMMINGS on March 16, 1920 in Sedgwick, Lawrence County, Arkansas.  Patrick was born March 17, 1863 in Haleyville, Winston County, Alabama.  Bessie died March 10, 2003 in Marion, Grant County, Indiana and is buried in Grant Memorial Park in Marion.

Samuel Ivey & Emma Carter marriage record

Eileen's cousin Betty BLACK found the record of her great-grandparents marriage, apparently through an Ancestry.com database and sent me an email with the information.

Sam and Emma were married February 26, 1896 in Massac County, Illinois. In the copy of the marriage register that Betty sent to me, Samuel IVY was listed as a farmer, a resident of McCracken County, Kentucky, who was born in Marshall County, Kentucky and was 26 years of age. His father was listed as Geo. IVY and his mother as Rebecca HARROLD. Interestingly, it was Samuel's second marriage, a fact that I didn't previously know.

Emma Carter was an 18 year old resident of McCracken County, Kentucky, born in Mayfield, Ky, the daughter of George CARTER and Ellen DUNAWAY. This was her first marriage.

The ceremony was performed at Metropolis, Massac County, Illinois on February 26, 1896.

Samuel and Emma's daughter, Bessie, was Eileen's grandmother. This information opens up a whole new line to research, the DUNAWAY line, and gives more clues to research the CARTER and IVEY clans.

Samuel Ivey Family - Marshall Co., KY & Lawrence Co., AR

Today I sourced the census data in the 1910 & 1920 census for Eileen's great-grandfather, Samuel Ivey. In 1910 the family is living in Marshall Co., KY and in 1920 they are across the Mississippi in Lawrence Co., AR. The last name is spelled Ivey in 1910 and Ivy in the 1920 record.

Samuel was a farmer in both census records - he and wife Emma Carter were married around 1896, probably in Kentucky. There is a tradition in Eileen's family of Cherokee Indian blood from this family line. The places of birth seem to indicate at least a possibility. In 1910, Samuel was born in Kentucky with his father born in Tennessee and mother born in Kentucky. By 1920, Samuel was born in Arkansas with his father born in Florida and mother born in Alabama. Likewise, in 1910 Emma was born in Arkansas with her father born in the United States and mother born in Kentucky. By 1920, Emma was born in Alabama with her father born in Alabama and mother born in Tennessee.

Known children of Samuel and Emma E. (Carter) Ivey are as follows :
i. [________] b. bet. 1898-1910; d. before 1910 census
ii. [________] b. bet. 1898-1910; d. before 1910 census
