Of Apples and Such

Received a wonderful comment from Susan, regarding my paternal 6th-great grandfather, Samuel JEWETT.  It seems that Samuel shared my interest in gardening, as according to this website about his farm, he was the developer of the type of apple known as Jewett Red or "Nodhead", which is a dessert variety.

Apparently, the apple was named "Nodhead" after Samuel, who had a reputation for nodding his head while walking or talking.  Did a quick search online to find that this variety is not known outside of New England. Interesting.

Would love to see if I can locate a couple of these type of apple trees to plant in my backyard.  What an interesting way to have a connection with a long distant ancestor.

That is wonderful. I love gardening and think it is a great legacy. I found a site that covers the apple and the pick your own orchard should be able to tell you where to get the tree. Have you tried the National Arboretum? They try and keep all the varieties for preserving them.
Good post.

Travis, if you can settle for scion wood I believe the Tower Hill Botanic Garden sells Jewett Red.

There may also be other sources closer to where you live.
