EASTERDAY - Barbara Helen Easterday, nee Haley, daughter of Rev. Geo. Haley, was born at Goshen, Hardin Co., O., Nov. 20, 1835, and died at her home at Portland, Ind., March 28, 1908.  In 1853 she was united in marriage with Christian Easterday.  This union was blessed with 3 sons and 3 daughters.  The youngest preceded her in death.  Mother Easterday was converted when only ten years of age.  She united with our Church and remained faithful.  Her daily life was a living testimony to the saving and keeping power of the grace of God.  She was a true Christian, blessed with a kind, sympathetic and humble disposition, and was esteemed by all who knew her.  She leaves husband, 3 sons, 2 daughters, 19 grandchildren, 4 brothers, 2 sisters and a host of other relatives and friends.  Franklin S. Barbara Helen (Haley) Easterday was my paternal 2x-great grandaunt, our common ancestors are George J. and Rachel (Gary) Haley.  Her children were William B., John G., Philemon, Rachel and Mary Abbie.  The family lived in Fulton County, Ohio for a time before moving to Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana.

1685 - Joseph PIERCE born in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  Joseph was the son of Samuel PIERCE and Lydia BACON.


1710 - Sarah BABCOCK born.  Sarah was the daughter of Robert BABCOCK and Lydia CRANDALL.


1752 - James HODGKINS married Elizabeth EVANS in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.  They were my 7x great-grandparents.


1761 - Robert PATRICK born.  Robert was the son of John PATRICK and Janett McPHEETERS.


1806 - James Monroe KELSO born in Kentucky.  James was the son of Charles KELSO and Mary McPHEETERS.


1828 - Alexander Miller McPHEETERS born.  Alexander was the son of William McPHEETERS and Margaret Ann Curry McDANIEL.


1835 - Frances PUTMAN married Alexander CLEVELAND in Monroe County, Indiana.  Frances was the daughter of James PUTMAN and Elizabeth KENDRICK.


1838 - Worcester PHILBRICK died.  Worcester was the son of Joel PHILBRICK and Sally FOX.


1844 - Samuel BUCHER died in Preble County, Ohio.  Samuel was the son of Nicholas BUCHER and Catherine PETRY.


1845 - Emeline YOUNG born in Sandusky County, Ohio.  Emeline was the daughter of Noah YOUNG and Orlintha BROWN.


1858 - Robert Emmitt SWAFFORD born in Tennessee.  Robert was the son of M.P. SWAFFORD and Jurusha Ann CLARK.


1859 - William H. BAILS born in Hancock County, Ohio.  William was the son of Abraham L. BAILS and Elizabeth HART.


1865 - John Edward RICHARDS born.  John was the son of John Thomas RICHARDS and Mary Jane CROCKETT.


1878 - Mary STOUT died in Hamilton County, Indiana.  Mary was the daughter of John BEALS and Mary JOHNSON.


1887 - Eddie DAVIS born in Long Run, West Virginia.  Eddie was the son of Joseph Newton DAVIS and Almeda DAVIS.


1893 - Charles PETRY died in Jay County, Indiana.  Charles was the son of Jacob PETRY and Magdalena MILLER.


1908 - Barbara Helen EASTERDAY died in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.  Barbara was the daughter of George J. HALEY and Rachel GARY.


1909 - Zelma Maxine McOWEN born in Putnam County, Ohio.  Zelma was the daughter of William Francis McOWEN and Bessie Elizabeth McLANE.


1916 - Clara Ellen WRIGHT born in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana.  Clara Ellen was the daughter of Virgil Lee WRIGHT and Edna Muriel PIERCE.


1925 - Frederick Henry DAMM died in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana. Frederick was the son of George DAMM and Hannah SNIDER.  Frederick was Corinne's 3x great-grandfather.


1935 - Mary Wilhelmina MEINHOLTZ died.  Mary was the daughter of Henry MEINHOLTZ and Edith Mabel LeMASTERS.

Fun With Search Terms

This past month has brought some interesting search terms to my blog.  Always fun to find out how someone finds me. These were the top search terms, according to my Blogger stats:

• freezer slaw - Wow, Grandma Wright's recipe was extremely popular this month.  Of course, a lot of folks have cabbage on and were probably looking for a good recipe.  I hope they enjoyed it. 
• Harry Pierpont - Not surprised at all to find his name in the list.  Harry is my bad-boy cousin, Dillinger gang leader, and only known relative to be executed via the electric chair.  Probably my main obsession of late has been tracking down newspaper articles on his early bank robbing career.  Look for more posts in the future.

The following search terms didn't get near as many hits, but they made

• 1900 "portland indiana" -  Not surprised to find this search brings folks here, as most of my paternal ancestry lived in the Portland, Indiana area.
• anna hunnicutt economy indiana - Don't have this lady in my database, though am familiar with the Quaker settlement there.
• cora wehrly -  Someone was looking for my Wehrly tree, wish they would have stopped and left a comment.
• easterday family tree -  Same with the Easterday family tree - which married into my Haley line in Jay County, Indiana.
• open faced peach pie -  Someone was hungry, hope they liked my family's recipe.
• ruby june lambertson - Ruby is my maternal great-aunt, and recently I posted some pictures of she and my grandmother.  Was this visitor a relative?  They didn't leave a comment.

Christian EASTERDAY was born 1831 in Ohio and married April 25, 1853 in Marion County, Ohio to Barbara Helen HALEY, daughter of George J. and Rachel H. (GARY) HALEY.  Barbara was born November 20, 1835 in Goshen, Hardin County, Ohio.  She is my paternal 2-great grandaunt, the older sister of my George Washington HALEY.

Christian is the father of John G and Philemon, Orville is John's son.  Christian was a Civil War veteran.  He died May 21, 1918 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.  Barbara died March 28, 1908 in Jay County, Indiana.

The Fred HALEY listed at 621 N. Meridian may be connected to my Haley line.  On page 59 of the directory, he is listed as living with wife Delilah.  There was a marriage between Frederick HALEY and Delilah A. FERNER on March 15, 1874 in Jay County, Indiana.

The EASTERDAY brothers at 720 N. Meridian may also be connected to my Haley line.  Two Easterday grocers are listed on page 51, John G. and Philemon.

When You Break The Microfilm Reader, It's Time To Go Home

My first research trip of 2011 turned out to be a productive one.  I had planned a visit to the Jay County Public Library in Portland, Indiana in order to obtain copies of obituaries from the local newspaper.  Prior to my trip, I had created a "to-do list" using the features of my RootsMagic database.

Though my focus was going to be strictly on obituaries, I decided to contact the Jay County Historical Society via email to see if by chance someone could come in on Saturday and let us look around.  Normally, the museum is only opened through the week.  On my last research trip, the microfilm reader at the library stopped working, and I wanted to have a back up plan in case it was broken again.

My dad wanted to go with me on this trip, and I was excited to have him come along.  He's been getting interested in family history again, reading my blog daily, doing off site research and preparing mini-history books on our ancestors.  We met at 7 a.m. in the morning and headed out to Portland.

Arriving at the library, my cell phone rang and it was Tom Young from the Historical Society letting me know that he could open the museum for us and let us do some research.  We agreed to meet at 10 a.m., so that still gave dad and I a few hours at the library.

As I quickly began to scour the local newspapers, which stretch back into the 1880s, I was pleased with the rate of success.  At only $0.15 per copy, these obituaries are a bargain.  I only wish that the entire collection of these small town newspapers were online somewhere, such as Ancestry, so that I could do an every name search and locate tidbits of information about the daily lives of the families.  The society notes in the earlier newspapers are great sources of information.

Just before 10 a.m., we headed down the Historical Society, where we met Tom.  My dad and Tom graduated from Portland High School in the same class, and as we talked we also realized that we have a distant connection through the Haley-Easterday families.  Tom mentioned that he has read my blog, always nice to hear that as well.  Will have to see what more information I could share with Tom about the Haley and Easterday families.

I wanted to focus on the records of the township schools at the museum, and right away dad found a school photo from 1931-32 of Mt. Zion school in Noble Township that had included his mother, Ruth Pauline Haley.  Fortunately, someone had taken the time to identify each and every person in the photo.  Very serendipitous to find such a picture right off the bat.

We spent about two hours at the museum, where I obtained copies of anniversary notices from the local newspapers, recipes submitted by family members to locally-published cookbooks, funeral home records and marriage supplemental transcript records.  Someone had taken the time to print these from the courthouse and place them in binders at the Historical Society, giving me access to information that normally would have been locked up at the courthouse on a weekend.

It's easy to get so involved in your research that you forget to eat, but around noon we decided that we'd better not overstay our welcome with Tom. We thanked him for letting us research on Saturday, and headed to lunch for a sandwich.

After lunch, we called my aunt Juanita and uncle Harold, and found out they were home.  We were able to visit with them for a good couple of hours, sharing the information we had just discovered.  Dad gave Juanita a booklet he had put together on the Lemasters family, including records on our ancestors' Civil War service.  Harold and Juanita shared some memories about the members of the families in the obits I had discovered.  My cousin Mark and his wife and daughter showed up right as we were leaving, and it was good to see them again.  Dad told them about this blog, so hopefully they will check it out and see some of the information we've discovered.

Then it was back to the library for a couple more hours of research.  Dad was digging into the plat maps and the city directories while I was burning up the microfilm reader printing obituaries.  As in the morning, was able to make great headway.  Just around 4 p.m., however, the microfilm reader decided it was time to surrender.  The reel just refused to advance forward or backwards. That was my cue that it was time to call it a day.  After notifying the staff of the problems, we decided to pack it in and call it a day.

We called my uncle Paul and aunt Betty, found out they were home, and stopped by for a visit on the way out of town.  We again shared the research and gave them a copy of the family history dad had put together.  Uncle Paul remembered some stories and shared a few tidbits about the family members whose obituaries I had obtained.  Cousin Nancy stopped by and we found out she is getting married in June; also saw cousin Phil briefly.

It was a long day, but a good day from a research standpoint.  Now I just have to source the data, and will post copies of the obituaries on the blog.

Christian Easterday (1831-1918)

After posting the Family Milestone post for April 25th, I was surprised to find that I didn't have more information on Christian EASTERDAY, who married my paternal 2nd-great grandaunt, Barbara Helen HALEY.  I didn't have his parentage, nor his death date, and the only family record I had was the 1900 census, when they lived in the 3rd ward of the city of Portland, Jay County, Indiana.

A quick search of Ancestry.com located the death record of Christian on May 21, 1918 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana, as recorded by the W.P.A. in the index of Indiana death records.  The record is located in Book CH-2, page 75.  Will have to check that out when I next get back to Portland.

My paternal 2nd-great grandaunt, Barbara Helen HALEY, married on this date in 1853 in Marion County, Ohio to Christian EASTERDAY.  Barbara was the daughter of George J. and Rachel (GARY) HALEY, and the older sister of my George Washington HALEY.   I do not have the parentage of Christian.  Barbara was born November 20, 1835 in Goshen, Hardin County, Ohio.  Christian was born February 1831 in Ohio.  Barbara died March 28, 1908 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.

My maternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Elizabeth Jane HEATON, married on this date in 1865 in Schuyler County, Missouri to William BRIDWELL.  Elizabeth was the daughter of James R. and Elizabeth (JACOBS) HEATON, and the younger sister of my Rebecca Ann HEATON.  Elizabeth was born in 1844 in Ohio.  William was born in 1844.  Nothing further is known at this time.

Family Milestones: November 20th

My paternal 5th-great grandfather, Michael JACOBS, was born on this date in 1772, probably in York County, Pennsylvania. Michael was the son of Johan Michel and Maria Catherine (CHERDRON) JACOBS. Michael married Margaret ________ before 1794, and fathered 8 children. Margaret was born October 23, 1769 and died February 23, 1864. Michael died January 23, 1846 in Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania and is buried in the Bender Burial Ground.

My paternal 2nd-great grandaunt, Barbara Helen HALEY, was born on this date in 1835 in Goshen County, Ohio. Barbara was the daughter of George J. and Rachel (GARY) HALEY, and the older sister of my George Washington HALEY. Barbara married Christian EASTERDAY on April 25, 1853 in Marion County, Ohio. Christian was born February 1831 in Ohio. Barbara died March 28, 1908 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.

My paternal 5th-great grandaunt, Rachel HAINES, was born on this date in 1779 in Burlington County, New Jersey. Rachel was the daughter of Robert and Rachel (VENICOMB) HAINES, and the younger sister of my Hannah HAINES. Rachel married Japeth BISHOP on April 12, 1840 in Burlington County, New Jersey. Japeth was born September 18, 1870 in Burlington County, New Jersey and died July 18, 1825 in Burlington County, New Jersey. Rachel died October 31, 1849 in Burlington County, New Jersey.

My paternal 3rd-great granduncle, Joel PHILBRICK, married Carrie E. BROWN on this date in 1855. Joel was the son of Joel and Sally (FOX) PHILBRICK, and the older brother of my Emeline PHILBRICK. Joel was born May 29, 1813, probably in Ohio. Carrie was born July 31, 1824. Nothing further is known about the family.

My maternal 5th-great grandaunt, Margaret KIMMER, was born on this date in 1807. Margaret was the daughter of Nicholas and Sarah (FAYLER) KIMMER, and the younger sister of my Elizabeth KIMMER. Nothing further is known about her.

My maternal 5th-great grandaunt, Sarah PIERCE, was born on this date in 1767. Sarah was the daughter of Seth and Bethiah (FIELD) PIERCE, and the older sister of my Gordon PIERCE. Sarah married Royal STORRS. Nothing further is known about the family.

My paternal 3rd-great grandparents, George J. and Rachel H. (GARY) HALEY, are buried in the Scotts Cemetery, Huron, Erie County, Ohio. FindAGrave volunteer Karen Breslin took this photograph for me.

George J. was born December 14, 1814 in Caton Basel, Switzerland. He emigrated with his parents to the United States when a young boy and the family settled in Fairfield County, Ohio.

Rachel H. was born March 25, 1816 in Fairfield County, Ohio of unknown parents. Her father was supposedly of Irish heritage.

George and Rachel were married on January 1, 1835 in Hardin County, Ohio. George was a minister of the Evangelical Association, and the family lived variously in Fairfield, Marion, Morrow and Erie Cos., Ohio.

George died on February 27, 1888 in Huron Township, Erie County, Ohio. Rachel followed him on November 25, 1897 in Erie County, Ohio.

George was born December 14, 1814 in Canton Basel, Switzerland and came with his parents to Fairfield Co., OH in 1816. George married on January 1, 1835 in Hardin Co., OH to Rachel H. GARY. Rachel was born March 25, 1816 in Fairfield Co., OH and died in 1898. George died February 27, 188 in Huron Twp., Erie Co., OH.

George Haley (1814-1888) (Presiding Elder 1957-65)

George Haley was born in Switzerland and settled in Fairfield County with his parents in 1816. At the age of fifteen he was soundly converted at the home of Shem Sager, north of Baltimore. In 1857 he was appointed presiding elder of Cleveland District. At that time he located on a farm near Huron where he lived the rest of his days. Here he set aside the grounds for the camp meetings which preceded Linwood.
"Rev. Haley was an active, sincere, and successful servant of God and led many souls to Christ," said S.P. Spreng. "His affability and generous disposition endeared him to the people, and his zeal in preaching gained him many attentive hearers."
