Harry N. Whisler household, 1940, Hamilton County, Indiana

Located the 1940 census record of the Harry N. Whisler household in Hamilton County, Indiana.  Harry was my maternal first cousin 3 times removed.  Our common ancestors were Carey W. Lambertson and Clara E. Cook.  Harry's parents were Omer Anderson Whisler and Lola May Lambertson.

1940 U.S. census, Hamilton County, Indiana, population schedule, Jackson Township, enumeration district (ED) 29-13, SD 6, sheet 3B, household 59, ; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 17 January 2017); National Archives, Washington, D.C..
At the time of the enumeration, Harry and his wife were living in Jackson Township.  The census states that Harry was renting his home for $10 per month and that it was on a farm.  Harry was 33 years old and born in Indiana.  His wife, Edna, was 23 years old and born in Indiana.  In 1935 their residence was the same place.

The record shows that Harry had completed the 8th grade and that Edna had completed 4 years of high school.  Harry's occupation was listed as operator of a farm and Edna had no occupation listed.

Also living in the household was son Russel L., age 3, born in Indiana.

If you have any additional information or are related to this family, I'd love to hear from you.

Breakthrough in my Cook line

The ancestry of my maternal 3rd-great grandmother, Clara (Cook) Lambertson (1848-1943) has been a mystery to me for a number of years, but thanks to newspaper research I've made a major breakthrough.

Years ago, I obtained her death certificate from the Hamilton County, Indiana Health department which listed her parents as William Cook and _____ Hirbarger.  At the time of her death, she was living with her daughter, Lola May (Lambertson) Whisler and husband, Omer, so it is likely that one of them was the source for the information about Clara's parents.  Clara's birthplace has been listed as Ohio in various census records with her parents born in Virginia, and her obituary adds to the confusion as it states that she came from Virginia to Ohio with her parents in a covered wagon.

Needless to say, searching various census records in 1850 for a family of a William Cook born in Virginia with a daughter named Clara or some variant was highly frustrating.  I searched for German variants as well, thinking that Cook might have been Kuch, etc. with no success.

Preble County, Ohio was where Carey and Clara's oldest two children, Charles and Samuel, are listed as being born.  It borders with Butler County, Ohio, where they were living in the 1870 census with Carey's father, John.  I have yet to discover a marriage record for Carey and Clara in either county, but since the first two children were born there, I considered it likely that Clara's family was from there.

A search of the 1850 census in Preble County finds a family in Washington Township consisting of James M. Cook, age 37 born in Virginia; Mary, age 36 born in Virginia; Amanda, age 14 born in Virginia; Elizabeth, age 13 born in Virginia; Sarah, age 10 born in Ohio; Mary, age 8 born in Ohio; Thaddeus, age 4 born in Ohio; and Clarissa, age 2 born in Ohio.

This was the closest match I had found for Clara, assuming that this Clarissa might be her. Yet the fact that the death certificate said her father's name was William, not James, had me keeping this record in my list of "close, but no cigar".  That is, until a couple of recent hints made me re-think who her parentage might be.

A recent Ancestry.com hint for Clara led me to the database U.S., Hinshaw Index to Selected Quaker Records, 1680-1940, which showed the following:

Ancestry.com. U.S., Hinshaw Index to Selected Quaker Records, 1680-1940 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2012.
Original data: Hinshaw, William Wade. William Wade Hinshaw's Index to Unpublished Quaker Records. Swarthmore, Pennsylvania: Friends Historical Library, Swarthmore College.
This is a membership card from the Hinkles Creek Monthly Meeting in Hamilton County, Indiana, recording the marriage of Carey Lambertson to Clara Cook.  It lists Carey's birth date as April 29, 1847 as the son of John & Sarah of Butler County, Ohio and Clara's birth dated as November 16, 1848 as the daughter of James and Mary of Preble County, Ohio.  Since this membership record was made by Clara and Carey, it is likely that they supplied the information to the church clerk and would have known who their parents were.

So this makes me think that the death certificate informant was wrong, and that Clara's father was James, not William.  At the time of her death, Clara was 94 years old and had spent many years as a widow living with her various children.  It's quite possible the informant at the time of death simply had the wrong names in their memory.  Not to mention that death is a stressful time for families and it would be easy to give the wrong name.

A newspaper find from the Alexandria Times-Tribune of November 4, 1924 also adds some interesting information.

ATTEND FUNERAL OF COUSIN AT GERMANTOWN
Charles Lambertson and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Lambertson were at Germantown, Ohio, Sunday to attend the funeral of the Messrs. Lambertson's cousin, the late Charles Martin.

Charles Lambertson was my 2nd-great grandfather, and Bert was his brother.  They are both the children of Carey and Clara (Cook) Lambertson.  Until this find, I was not aware of any cousins with the last name Martin on the Lambertson side, so this clue might lead to a cousin on his mother's side.  Germantown is in Montgomery County, Ohio another known location of Lambertson relatives as well.

A search of FamilySearch.org for the death record of a Charles Martin that would fit the search criteria found the following record:

"Ohio, Deaths, 1908-1953," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X696-RXQ : accessed 2 August 2015), Chas A Martin, 31 Oct 1924; citing Germantown, Montgomery, Ohio, reference fn 56258; FHL microfilm 1,992,606.
Charles A. Martin died October 31, 1924 in Germantown, Montgomery County, Ohio of pulmonary tuberculosis.  He was the son of Francis M. Martin and Laura Cook of Astoria, Butler County, Ohio.

A search of the FindAGrave site led me to Charles Albert Martin's memorial page, with links to his parents memorials as well.  His father was Francis Marion Martin (1846-1910) and Laura Ann (Cook) Martin (1853-1904).  He also had a sister named Minnie L. Martin (1873-1932).

Laura's memorial page states that she was born February 1853 in Gratis, Preble County, Ohio and that her parents were James M. Cook (1812-1860) and Mary Jane Cook (1814-1891).

The James M Cook memorial page states that he was born November 13, 1812 in Virginia and died September 26, 1860 in Preble County, Ohio.

These clues line up with the family of James and Mary Cook found in the 1850 census of Preble County, Ohio.

In addition, a quick search of Ancestry.com Member Trees finds a couple of trees with this James M Cook, listed as James Madison Cook and his wife as Mary Harsbarger.  Could this be where Clara's parentage was garbled on her death certificate - Hirbarger from Harsbarger?  I think so.  James was born in the Shennandoah Valley of Virginia and died 1860 in Preble  County, Ohio.

I've located the family of James and Mary in the 1860 census of Lanier Township, Preble County, Ohio as James Cook, age 49 born in Virginia; Mary, aged 47 born in Virginia; Elizabeth, aged 22 born in Virginia; Thadius, aged 14 born in Ohio; Clarissy, aged 11 born in Ohio; Susan, aged 9 born in Ohio; Laura, aged 7 born in Ohio, Martha, aged 5 born in Ohio; and Henry, aged 3 born in Ohio.

This would tie the family groups from the 1850 and 1860 census together, and by the 1860 census we have Laura in the family who looks like a fit to be the one who married Francis Martin.  In addition, both of these records contain a Clara the right age to be my Clara in the right family group.  I'm pretty sure we have a match.

I've a lot more digging to see where the rest of these Cooks were in the ensuing years and possibly connect with folks researching the trees online, but I'm excited to be knocking down a brickwall.

If you have any additional information/corrections or are related to these families, I would love to hear from you.

----
Located this obituary of my maternal 2nd-great grandaunt, Maud (Lambertson) Fisher Hayse in the Mt. Vernon Register-News.  This obituary gave me the date of her marriage to her second husband, and also the death month of her first husband.

Her second husband is referred to as Will Hayse in my notes, will need to see what else I can find about him.  The obituary didn't list where they were married, but it was likely Illinois, so will need to see if I can locate a copy.

Church Record Sunday : Lambertson Family, Hinkle Creek Friends MM, Hamilton County, Indiana

Ancestry.com, U.S. Quaker Meeting Records, 1681-1994 [database on-line], Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014. Original data :Indiana Yearly Meeting Minutes. Earlham College Friends Collection & College Archives, Richmond, Indiana.

Quaker records and meeting minutes have recently been added to Ancestry.com.  Not just the abstracts from Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, but actual records from Earlham College, Swathmore College, Guilford College and Haverford College collections.  Last night I decided to dig in and see what I could find.

My maternal 3rd-great grandparents, Carey and Clara (Cook) Lambertson and family had joined the Society of Friends in the late 1890s, which I knew from Willard Heiss' abstracts of Indiana Friends records.  Searching the database in Ancestry, I was able to find membership records of the Hinkle Creek Monthly Meeting in Hamilton County, Indiana, which provided some good information on the family, even though they spelled the surname as Lamberson, without the 't'.

The record card of the family states :

Carey Lamberson,  born Butler County, Ohio 29th day, 4th month, 1847; son of John and Sarah Lamberson
Clara E. Lamberson, born Preble County, Ohio 16th day, 11th month, 1848; daughter of James and Mary Cook
Lola Lamberson, born Madison County, Indiana 28th day, 6th month, 1883; daughter of Carey and Clara E. Lamberson.

All were received into membership by request on the 21st day, 2nd month, 1899.  This was not all of the Lambertson family.

These birth dates agree with what I've previously recorded in my database, though I had Lola born in Hamilton County, Indiana.  That source was from a correspondent.

A key fact uncovered her was that Clara's parents were named as James and Mary Cook and her birthplace named as Preble County, Ohio.  Previously, her parentage was not clearly known, as I had found a census record that appeared to be her in 1850, but Clara's death certificate stated her father's name was William, and her mother was _____ Hirharger, both born in Virginia.  I had written a post on Clara's ancestry before.  The informant for her death certificate was likely her daughter, Lola, at whose house she was staying when she died.  Now, this record card is pointing me in the direction of my previous hunch.

The record card also indicates that Cary and Clara were married 1st day, 10th month, 1869; and that Lola married Omer Whisler on 15th day, 4th month, 1905, facts that agree with my data.

The entire family was dropped from the membership of the Hinkle Creek meeting by discontinuance of name by request.  Cary and Clara were dropped 20th day, 2nd month, 1917 and Lola was dropped 20th day, 5th month, 1919.  According to his obituary, Cary was a member of the Friends church at Providence, Hamilton County, Indiana at the time of his death in 1918.

Clara (Cook) Lambertson (1848-1943) : Sunday's Obituary

Clara Lambertson obit, Elwood Call-Leader, January 23, 1943

Source: Elwood Call-Leader, Elwood, Indiana, January 23, 1943, p. 1

FORMER RESIDENT DIES AT ATLANTA

Mrs. Lambertson Stricken At Home Of Daughter

Mrs. Clara Lambertson, 94, formerly of Elwood, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Omer Whisler, west of Atlanta, Saturday morning.  She was the wedow [sic] of Cary Lambertson.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Maude Hayes of Mount Vernon, Ill., Mrs. Lola Whisler of Atlanta, at whose home she died, and two sons, Charles Lambertson of Summitville, and Bert Lambertson of Indianapolis.  There are 13 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

She and her family came to Elwood when it was known as Quincy.  It was reported that she remembered when Lincoln was president, and that she came from Virginia to Ohio in a covered wagon with hehr [sic] parents.

The body was removed to the Schaffer funeral home in Arcadia and the funeral was held Monday morning at the Dunkard church with burial following in City cemetery here.

----
Clara (COOK) LAMBERTSON was my maternal 3rd-great grandmother.  Her obituary is one that I recently rediscovered when searching at the Elwood library.

Some interesting comments were made in the obituary, particularly that her family came from Virginia to Ohio in a covered wagon and that she remembered Lincoln as president.

Clara would have been around 13 years old when the Civil War began, so yes, she could have remembered Lincoln.  Whether she was born in Ohio or Virginia is disputed, as the census records state she was born in Ohio.  I have not yet located her marriage record, though it was supposedly October 1, 1869 in Butler County, Ohio.  No record has been located in Butler or surrounding counties.

The family was definitely in Butler County, Ohio in the 1870 census, which remains the earliest documented record I have for Clara.  The town of Elwood, Indiana was originally known as Quincy, and became known as Elwood in 1869.

Fearless Females: Family Document

March 9 — Take a family document (baptismal certificate, passenger list, naturalization petition, etc.) and write a brief narrative using the information.

Above is the death certificate I received from the Hamilton County, Indiana Health Department for my maternal 3rd-great grandmother, Clara (COOK) LAMBERTSON.

Clara died January 23, 1943 early in the morning, 7:00 a.m.  It was a Saturday morning.  Her place of death was Atlanta, a tiny town in Hamilton County.  At age 94, she was most likely living with her daughter and son-in-law, Lola and Omer WHISLER.  Clara's husband had long since passed, back in 1918, and Clara had been bouncing around from one family member to the next.  The 1930 census had her living in Mt. Vernon, Jefferson County, Indiana with her daughter Maud.  By 1932, she was back in Anderson, Madison County, Indiana living with her son, Bert, where she suffered a broken hip.  Newspaper reports in 1933 had her staying with Lola.

Two days after passing, Clara was laid to rest in the Elwood City Cemetery, Elwood, Madison County, Indiana next to her husband, Carey.

An intriguing clue was given on the backside of the death certificate, listing Clara's parents :

I have not been able to verify or rule out these as potential parents for Clara, nor find her in the 1850 census in Ohio.

Farming in North Dakota : Bert S. Lambertson

A brief mention in the social notes of the April 5, 1912 Tipton, Indiana tribune gave me the clue:
"Bert Lambertson and wife from North Dakota are here visiting his sister, Mrs. Lola Whisler and family.  Mr. and Mrs. Lambertson have not been back to Indiana since they moved to North Dakota which has been about five years ago.  Mr. Lambertson's parents live here in Elwood, and he has a sister at Cicero and they will visit them while here.  It is said they are thinking of remaining in Indiana."
Bert Sigler Lambertson was my maternal 2nd-great granduncle.  He was born August 29, 1886 in Tipton County, Indiana, the son of Carey W. and Clara (COOK) LAMBERTSON.  Bert had married January 4, 1908 in Hamilton County, Indiana to Marie WILLIAMS, daughter of George B. and Louise (________) WILLIAMS.  I had not located Bert in the 1910 census in Indiana, and it wasn't until this article was found that I knew where to search.

Source: Ancestry.com 1910 United States Federal Census [database on-line]. Provo, Utah, USA

I'm not sure who gave the census taker the information on this family, but even though it full of errors, I'm sure that I've found the right family.  Bert and his wife were living with her parents in 1910 in Haven, Foster County, North Dakota.

Bert is enumerated as "B. Samuel LAMBERTSON" in the George WILLIAMS household.  The relationship to the head of household has been smudged out, but appears to be 'son in law'.  He is a white male, aged 23 years old, married for 2 years with one child living (this should only be filled out for females).  Apprarently the census taker was having trouble with this household, for the sex column was marked both 'male' and 'female' for more than one member of the household.  This 'B. Samuel LAMBERTSON' was born in Indiana, with both parents born in Ohio, spoke English, could read and write and was engaged in farming.

Right above 'B. Samuel LAMBERTSON' in the George WILLIAMS household, is Marie WILLIAMS, daughter, listed under her maiden name.  She is also shown as a white female, age 23, married for 2 years, mother of 1 child who is still living. Marie was born in Indiana as were both of her parents.  She could speak English but could not read or write.

George WILLIAMS, the head of household, was a 47-year old white male, born in Indiana.  Both of his parents were born in Indiana, and he was engaged in farming.  He could speak English and read and write.  His wife, listed as 'Louie WILLIAMS' was also 47 years old, married for 25 years, mother of 4 children; 3 of whom were living.  She was born in Indiana, as was her father; her mother was born in North Carolina. She could speak English and read and write.

Even though the census enumerator has him listed as "B. Samuel LAMBERTSON", I'm convinced that I've found Bert in the 1910 census, living with his in-laws.  Samuel was the name of Bert's older brother, and you have to wonder who gave the information.  One mystery is that Bert and Marie's 1 1/2 year old son, Frank, is not listed with the family.  Perhaps he was with other relatives, or he was missed.  The number of strike throughs on this census sheet and the errors therein make me wonder how accurate it was.

Trip throughout Ohio

Source: Tipton Tribune, Tipton, Indiana, Thursday, August 12, 1915, page 7.

Mr. and Mrs. Omer Whisler and daughter Edna and son Harry, and Mr. and Mrs. Charley Lambertson, of Cicero, left last Thursday morning in the former's machine for a trip through Ohio, they returned Tuesday and traveled three hundred and fifty-five miles without a single mishap and had fine weather and roads. They visited in Dayton, also went to the soldiers home at that place and visited at Middletown, Germantown and Eaton. They reported a hail storm in some parts of Ohio on Sunday afternoon and much rain. Mr. and Mrs. Lambertson, of Elwood, parents of Mrs. Whisler looked after the home of Mr. and Mrs. Whisler during their absence.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fisher and son Ralph of near Cicero, spent Friday with Mr. and Mrs. Lambertson at the Whisler home.

Comment: A trip that we might take for granted today must have been quite an experience in 1915. Sounds like they were visiting Lambertson relatives back in Ohio. Nelson J. Lambertson, a great-uncle to Charles Lambertson and Lola (Lambertson) Whisler, was a resident of the National Military Home in Dayton. He was a Civil War veteran. The towns of Middletown and Germantown were areas where Lambertson members were known to have resided.

Motoring to Elwood

Source: Tipton Tribune, Tipton, Indiana, Thursday, June 10, 1915, page 7.

Omer Whisler and family, Walter Noble and family motored to Elwood Sunday and spent the day with Mrs. Whisler's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cary Lambertson. Edna, the daughter that has been spending the past week with her grandparents returned home with them.

Comment: The Walter Noble family must have been a family friend, as I do not know of any connection to the Lambertson family.

Thanksgiving Dinner, 1913

Source: Tipton Tribune, Tipton, Indiana, Thursday, December 4, 1913, page 7.

Mr. and Mrs. Carry Lambertson of Elwood spent from Friday until Monday here, guests of their daughter, Mrs. Lola Whisler.

Chas. Lambertson of Cicero was the guest of his sister, Mrs. Lola Whisler Thursday.

Comment: What the paper isn't saying is that this must have been Thanksgiving dinner and an extended visit. I also wonder why Charles Lambertson's family isn't mentioned - did his wife and children celebrate Thanksgiving at home or with someone else? Yet again there is another way to spell Carey W. Lambertson's name. I've chosen to go with Carey.

Sunday dinner guests

Source: Tipton Tribune, Tipton, Indiana, Thursday, August 21, 1913, page 3.

Omer Whisler and family spent Sunday in Elwood the guests of Mrs. Whisler's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carey Lambertson

Omer Whisler and family and their guests Mr. Wagner and family, of Ohio, were the relative guests of Frank Fisher and family near Cicero, Wednesday.

Comment: I do not know the relationship of the Wagner family to the other members of the Lambertson clan. Omer Whisler and Lola May (Lambertson) Whisler had two children, Edna and Harry.

Mrs. Lambertson of Elwood

Source: Tipton Tribune, Tipton, Indiana, Thursday, May 29, 1913, page 3.

Mrs. Lambertson of Elwood who has been here visiting her daughter Mrs. Omer Whisler has gone to Onward to visit for a few days with her daughter, Mrs. Maude Fischer and family.

Comment: Lola (Lambertson) Whisler and Maud (Lambertson) Fisher were the daughters of Carey W. & Clara (Cook) Lambertson. Lola married Omer Whisler, Maude married Frank Fisher. I hadn't heard of Onward - it is located in Tipton Township, Cass County, Indiana, population 81 in the 2000 census.

Lambertson siblings stay in touch

Members of my Lambertson family managed to stay close knit by traveling on the weekends, as evidenced by these newspaper column tidbits :

Soucre: Tipton Tribune, Tipton, Indiana, Thursday, May 1, 1913, page 2.

Omer Whisler and family spent Sunday near Cicero with Charles Lambertson and family.

Source: Tipton Tribune, Tipton, Indiana, Thursday, May 22, 1913, page 6.

Charles Lambertson and family of Cicero spent Sunday here with his sister, Mrs. Omer Whisler and family.

Comment: Charles Lambertson and Lola (Lambertson) Whisler were the children of Carey W. & Clara (Cook) Lambertson. Although they didn't live too far away by today's standards, it must have been an effort to stay in touch and have to travel before the days of highways, email and cellphones.

Miss Edna Whisler returns

Source: Tipton Tribune, Tipton, Indiana, Friday, June 14, 1912, page 7.

ALBRIGHT

Miss Edna Whisler who has been visiting her grandmother Mrs. Carrie Lambertson of Elwood returned to her home at this place Friday.

Mrs. Carrie Lambertson of Elwood spent Friday here with her daughter, Mrs. Omer Whisler.

Comment: Again, either the name is incorrect or they have confused Carey Lambertson with his wife, Clara Lambertson. Carey Lambertson (1847-1918) & Clara (Cook) Lambertson (1848-1943) were the grandparents of Edna Whisler.
