Exploratory Data Analysis Through 2x-Great Grandaunts & Uncles

Though it took much longer that I had hoped, have finally finished by series of exploratory data analysis through my 2x-great grandaunts and granduncles.  Previously, I had written about my results through my 2x-great grandparents.  My next steps are to move on to my 3x-great grandparents as well as start work on some of Eileen's ancestors and Corinne's ancestors.

Working on this series has allowed me to find out where there are gaps in my research and has added much data.  Now I just need to follow up with my "to-do" lists before my next research trip to make sure I use my time effectively.

Here are the links to posts about the exploratory data analysis posts for my 2x-great grandaunts and granduncles:

Exploratory Data Analysis: Carrie Mae (Haley) Graves Booth Marks (1877-1956)

L-R: Arthur E. Graves, Cledith O. Graves, Carrie Mae (Haley) Graves

Carrie Mae (Haley) Graves Booth Marks (1877-1956) was my paternal great-grandaunt.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about her.

1. Vital Records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

Carrie was born January 4, 1877 in Liberty Township, Seneca County, Ohio1.  The State of Ohio did not require the keeping of birth records until 1867.  State law required the probate court to keep these records from 1867 to 1908, according to the Ohio Historical Society webpage.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If Carrie's birth was recorded in a newspaper, I have not yet discovered it.   There are editions of the Sandusky Register in existence, and that is one avenue of research in the future.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am not aware of any surviving Bible record of the Haley family.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one does exist.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

The Haleys were members of the Evangelical Association.  I am not aware of any baptismal record for Carrie at this time.

Later, Carrie was associated with the Church of Daniel's Band in Marine City, Michigan.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no evidence that Carrie was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

Carrie married February 23, 1895 in Jay County, Indiana to Arthur E. Graves2,3.  A copy of their marriage license was the subject of a previous post.

Carrie married secondly September 25, 1924 in Midland, Midland County, Michigan to Elam Gifford Booth4.  A copy of their marriage license was the subject of a previous post.

Carrie married thirdly to Sidney Marks between 1940 and her death.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of Carrie and Arthur's nuptials and Carrie and Elam's nuptials.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if there was any mention of anniversary celebrations.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

There is no indication that Carrie was ever divorced, but a thorough search of court records in Midland County, Michigan needs to be completed.

     1.3. Death Certificate

Carried died in 1956, according to my database, but this fact does not contain a source.  Her tombstone states 1955.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Will need to search contemporary newspapers in Midland, Michigan area to see if I can locate an obituary for Carrie.  Will add this to my list of 'to-do' items.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Once I have a copy of Carrie's obituary, I can contact the funeral home mentioned and see if they have any additional records of Carrie's funeral.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Carrie is buried in the Midland Cemetery, Midland, Midland County Michigan5, next to her first husband, Arthur.  Her memorial on the FindAGrave website is here.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1940 Federal Census

On April 1, 1940, Carrie was enumerated in the Mark Langell household in Marine City, St. Clair County, Michigan6, as Carrie Booth, widow, age 63.  She is listed as 'sister' to the head of household, but I believe this is more in the spiritual sense (Christian), as all were members of the Church of Daniel's Band.  Her residence in 1935 was Seneca County, Ohio. She had completed the 8th grade in education.  She owned her home valued at $1000.  Her address was 246 Bruce Street.

          2.1.2. 1930 Federal Census

On May 27, 1930, Carrie was enumerated in the Elam G. Booth household in Marine City, St. Clair County, Michigan7, as Carrie M. Booth, wife, age 53.  She had been married at age 18 for her first marriage.  She was born in Ohio, as were both of her parents.  She could speak English. No occupation was listed.

          2.1.3. 1920 Federal Census

On January 6, 1920, Carrie was enumerated in the Charles Lee household in Ward 3, Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan8, as Carrie Graves, servant, age 43.  She was married, born in Ohio, and both of her parents were born in Ohio.  She could read and write and spoke English.  Her occupation was listed as a cook at the hotel.  Her husband Arthur was listed in the same household as a house carpenter.

          2.1.4. 1910 Federal Census

On April 25, 1910, Carrie was enumerated in the Arthur Graves household in Midland, Midland County, Michigan9, as Carrie Graves, wife, age 33.  She was married for 15 years and was the mother of 1 child, who was still living.  She was born in Ohio, as were her mother and father.  She could read and write and speak English.  No occupation was listed.

          2.1.5. 1900 Federal Census

On June 13, 1900, Carrie was enumerated in the Arthur E. Graves household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana10, as Carrie M. Graves, wife, age 23.  She was born January 1877 in Ohio.  Both of her parents were born in Ohio.  She had been married for 5 years and was the mother of 1 child, still living.  She could read and write and spoke English.  No occupation was listed.

          2.1.6. 1880 Federal Census

On June 22, 1880, Carrie was enumerated in the George W. Haley household in Liberty Township, Seneca County, Ohio11, as Carrie M. Haley, daughter, age 3.  She was born in Ohio, as were both of her parents.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Michigan enumerated census records every ten years in 1854, 1864, 1874, 1884, 1894 and 1904.  I'm not sure how soon Carrie moved into Michigan, she might be covered on the 1904 census.

The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1931.  These, however, were merely for the purposes of legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of records to see what light they might shed on the Haley farm.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Not applicable, as Carrie was female.

     3.2. Pension Records

I am not aware of any military service by Carrie's husbands or father that would have made her eligible for military benefits.

     3.3. Service Records

Not applicable, as Carrie was female.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in St. Clair and Oakland Counties, Michigan, as well as Jay County, Indiana, to see what records might mention Carrie and her family.  Will add this on my list of 'to-do' items.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Will need to search out plat maps in St. Clair and Oakland Counties, Michigan to see if I can locate her family and obtain any additional information.

5. Supplemental Records

Supplemental records to search for Carrie include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my list of 'to-do' items for my next research trip.

Marriage: Carrie Graves to Elam Booth

Doing further research on my paternal great-grandaunt, Carrie Mae (Haley) Graves, I located a second marriage by her to Elam Gifford Booth (b. 1865) in Midland, Midland County, Michigan on September 25, 1924 at Familysearch.org.

They were married by the Rev. George Hoggard and Molly and Hattie Hoggard were witnesses.  The Hoggard family and Elam were officers in a church known as the "Church of Daniel's Band" in Michigan.  This church was founded in 1893 in Marine City, Michigan and was somewhat of the Methodist tradition.  The church still exists today.

Death Certificate : Arthur E. Graves (1871-1920) Midland County, Michigan

Michigan Department of State, death certificate no. 1469 (1920), Arthur E. Graves; digital image, State of Michigan, Seeking Michigan (http://www.seekingmichigan.org : accessed 30 May 2013).

While searching for information on my paternal great-grandaunt, Carrie May (Haley) Graves, I located at the Seeking Michigan website her husband, Arthur E. Graves',  death certificate.  I had just located the family in the 1920 census of Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan, and knew I had located the right family by his occupation, age, and wife's name.

In the 1920 census, Arthur was working as a carpenter at the Hotel Lee at 12 Perry Street in Pontiac, and his wife, Carrie, was working as a cook.  The address given on the death certificate lists 12 Perry Street.  The cause of death was interstitial nephritis.

Facts I didn't have were his exact date of birth: August 31, 1871 and his parents.  A.J. Graves, the informant, was Arthur's father.

1897 Directory : Portland, Indiana

My dad has been "downsizing" a bit here recently and has been giving me family history items and other ephemera that I'm in the process of scanning, extracting and posting to the blog.  Using my new Flip-Pal scanner, I'm posting here some family I've found in the 1897 Directory of Portland, Indiana.  Dad's copy is the 1982 reprint, and it is still available for purchase for $5.00 (a steal!) from the Jay County Historical Society.

As I went through the directory, I scanned pages that contained surnames of interest in my research.

The Arthur E. Graves listed here with wife Carrie is the only one that is known to be family, but I've included the others in case someone else knows them.  Arthur was married to Carrie Mae HALEY, daughter of George W. and Mary Jane (SHERRICK) HALEY.  Carrie was my great-grandaunt.  She and Arthur were married in 1895 in Jay County.

There were several HALEY families listed in the directory, but the only one I know for sure is my family is Ora HALEY, listed as being of school age, living at 289 Robert Huey.  She is the sister of Carrie GRAVES (above), and living in the same household.  There were multiple HALEY families in Portland, and I've yet to sort them all out.

The Mary J. KIMBLE listed here is my paternal 2nd-great grandmother, Mary Jane (SHERRICK) HALEY KIMBLE, who was widowed and remarried in May of 1897 to Robert KIMBLE.  Why Robert is not listed in this directory, I'm not sure.  I do not know if the other KIMBLEs listed are of his family.

Notice that Mary KIMBLE, Ora HALEY and Arthur & Carrie GRAVES were all living together at 289 Robert Huey.  Today, this street does not exist.  According to the street cross reference, Robert Huey was Meridian extended, from Votaw to North Corporate line.  Today this is all part of Meridian street.

I've yet to identify which PETRY family that Stella belongs with; another avenue of research.

The J.W. Wehrly listed here was John William WEHRLY, son of William P. and Olive Jane (SMITH) WEHRLY.  John was my paternal great-granduncle.  Later in the directory, the surname is spelled alternatively as Wherley.

This postcard was sent to my paternal greataunt, Vera (HALEY) STUBER from her aunt, Carrie (HALEY) GRAVES.  The Nin mentioned was Carrie's sister, Nina (HALEY) ZORN.  I cannot make out the year, but it must have been after 1910 as the Graves family was living in Midland, Michigan by then.

Thanksgiving Greeting : November 21, 1909

Nov. 21, 1909  Ashland, Ohio -

Dear Vera and all the rest. I rec'd your very welcome letter some time ago and could not get time to answer it.  We are all well Nin & Geo. started home yesterday morn. was going to stop at Lima over Sunday. We are going to begin packing up tomorrow and then when we get moved I will ans. your letter.  It is a bad rainy day and we are lonesome.  Zada and Rinda Hayes from Burbank are coming over here to night.  Zada's little boy is here now.  I wish I was out at your house for Thanksgiving dinner.  We may get packed up in time to be at Grandpas and visit them a day or two. Write soon from your Aunt Carrie & all.

----

This postcard was sent to my paternal greataunt, Vera HALEY, from her aunt, Carrie (HALEY) GRAVES.  Nin & Geo. mentioned in the card would be Carrie's sister Nina and her husband George ZORN.  The Grandpa referenced here could be Vera's grandfather, David SHERRICK (1823-1914), who lived in Ashland, Ohio.

The reference to packing and moving could be related to Arthur and Carrie (HALEY) GRAVES move to Midland, Michigan.  By the 1910 census, they were living in the 2nd ward of the city of Midland.

Interestingly, November 21, 1909 was also a Sunday just as this year.

Funeral Record: Eli Weldon Haley (1866-1957)

Source: Eli Haley Funeral Record, Baird Freeman Funeral Home, Jay County, Indiana 1956-1958, Schindler & Saxman, ed., 1996

The Jay County Public Library in Portland, Indiana has several books of funeral home records of the Baird Freeman Funeral Home, compiled by local editors.  I was glad to find the records of my paternal great-grandfather, Eli Weldon HALEY (1866-1957).  Eli died July 14, 1957 in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana.  His wife, Cora, had died in 1955.

I was glad to have located this record, as I found out that I had his death in the wrong month (I had it as June) in my database.  I need to go to the Health Department and obtain an official death certificate on my next visit.

Eli's date of death was July 14th at 6 a.m.  He was 91 years of age, being born March 24, 1866 in Erie County, Ohio.

His residence was listed as Madison Township, and his death occurred at the Stuber residence.  Vera (Mrs. Clarence) Stuber was his eldest daughter, and I know that they were taking care of them in their older years.

The record lists his father as George W. Haley and mother as Mary Jane Sherrick, which correlates to records that I have found.  He was buried in the Mt. Zion cemetery in a casket manufactured by the Batesville Casket Co., an Indiana company still in operation today.

I found it interesting to see the miscellaneous charges listed on the record, including charges for wires to Troy, Ohio and Cleveland(?) and a phone call to Marine City, Michigan.  I assume that these were made to notify relatives.  The phone call to Marine City, Michigan could have been to Eli's sister, Carrie Mae (HALEY) GRAVES, wife of Arthur GRAVES.  The Haley's were from the Cleveland area, so this might be to some other relatives.  I'm not sure who may have been in Troy, Ohio.

The funeral record lists who to charge the bill to : Mrs. Clarence STUBER, Route 3 Ft. Recovery (Ohio); Mrs. Galen Miller, Muncie; Mrs. E.C. Kunce, Danville, Illinois; Mrs. Waymon Thornburg; and Mrs. Ord LeMaster.  These are the surviving children, all daughters.

Church Record Sunday: Mt. Zion Church has served Noble area since 1852

The following is an article that appeared in the Portland, Indiana Commercial Review on March 19, 1977, page 19.  Mt. Zion church was the spiritual home of my HALEY and allied families for many years. I've added my comments in red.

The Mt. Zion Church in Noble Township was organized in 1852, just a few years before the beginning of the Civil War.
This was about the same time Muncie celebrated the completion of the Bellefountain and Indianapolis railroad to Muncie and the same year of the first state fair held at Indianapolis.
A. Nicolai and Frederick Schumerman of St. Mary’s, Ohio circuit conducted the organizational meeting the Mt. Zion (Evangelical Association) at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sebastian Haley.[maternal 3rd-great granduncle, brother of George J.]  The Haleys were married Feb. 25, 1846 and came to Jay County in 1850 from Ohio, where he purchased 120 acres of land.
Charter members of the church were: Mr. and Mrs. Sebastian Haley, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Houdeschell, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Wentz, Mr. and Mrs. Dan Ferner, and Catherine Young.
Daniel Ferner started a tile factory and pottery, in 1861, one of the first industries in the township.  They came to Jay County from Fairfield County, Ohio, and located on a 92-acre farm.  They lived in an old log cabin for two years, then built a hewed log house for a pottery and brought clay from Ohio to make the pottery.  This didn’t prove to be successful, so he made tile from local clay.  In 1879, he moved into a better home.  He and his wife had 11 children.
These charter members worshipped in homes and barns from about 1852 to 1855 when they built a log church.  The 20 or 25 feet square structure seated about 100.  The land was donated by C. Young.  The pews were homemade.
In 1881, the log church was replaced with a brick building 30 by 50 feet at a cost of $2,000.  Most of the labor was donated.
The bricks for the new building were made and burned by Fred Haley [son of Sebastian] in Noble township.  Henry Miller donated the sand and the lime was purchased from the Wagner Lime Kiln, near Fort Recovery, Ohio.  The church was dedicated Dec. 11, 1881 by William Yost from Cleveland, Ohio.
In the early days of the church, people often walked two or three miles to meetings.  At night, they carried lanterns.  Years later, a light plant furnished lights, and when electricity was available, the church was wired for electric lights.
In 1887, the Mt. Zion Church of the Evangelical Association had a membership of 88.  Class leaders were George W. Haley [2nd-great grandfather] and A.[August] Geggenheimer [2nd-great granduncle - husband of Sarah C. Haley] ; exhorters were William Haley [son of Sebastian] and Albert Graves.  Pastor was Rev. H.E. Meyers of Fort Recovery.
Among the preceding pastors were: L.S. Fisher, G.W. Holderman, B.F. Dill, J.D. Pontius.
Sunday school attendance during the 1880’s averaged 60. Adams Metzner [2nd-great grandfather John Adam Metzner] was superintendent.
The church later changed to part of the Portland Circuit.  J.E. Young served from 1910 to 1911 and W.I. Weyant of the Pittsburgh Conference filled the vacancy for two years.
In 1933, the church was re-roofed at a cost of $180.  Mt. Zion became an Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1946, following a merger of the two denominations.
This church was then assigned to the Albright Circuit in 1951.
On Sept. 7, 1952, a centennial celebration was held.  Guest speakers were Rev. Reuben H. Mueller, Rev. C.W. Walmer, a former pastor, and Rev. Hugh Cobb.
In 1958, the church was remodeled by digging a basement, bracing the walls with cement pillars, and raising the floor of the sanctuary three feet.  Cost of the project was $4,000 besides the donated labor.
Later a furnace, well, water system, restrooms, and a kitchen were installed.  A tile ceiling was installed in 1960.  Since then, new carpeting and wallpaper have been added.
The church is now a two-point charge with Westchester United Methodist Church.  Rev. Larry Werbil is pastor and Earl Brumm is superintendent.
