Luman Walker Lemasters Jr. (b.19 Oct 1842 Shelby Co., OH; d. 18 Nov 1931 Salamonia, Jay Co., IN) & Mary Keziah Chew (b. 13 Feb 1847 Mt. Holly, Burlington Co., NJ; d. 22 Feb 1927 Madison Twp., Jay Co., IN) were married 2 Oct 1864 at Versailles, Darke Co., OH.

Mrs. John Yeager Died At A Local Hospital Shortly After Noon Today After A Short Illness

Was Prominent In Church Affairs

Was Also a Leader in Civic and Social Circles - Survived by a Husband and Six Children - Funeral to be Announced Later

Mrs. Bertha Yeager, wife of Prof. John H. Yeager, principal of the Meridian street school, of 604 South Walnut street, died very suddenly at a local hospital at 12:45 o'clock this afternoon.  The deceased underwent a serious operation last Sunday and apparently was improving, but this morning she suffered a relapse and complications of heart trouble resulted in her death.

Mrs. Yeager was 47 years old and was one of ten children born to Mr. and Mrs. LeMaster, of Portland, Ind., and was the first member of the family to die.  She is survived by the husband and six children, Clarence, a student at Purdue University; Mary, Helen, John Vernon, George and Luther Yeager, all of this city.  She is also survived by the parents, Mr. and Mrs. LeMaster, of Portland, and four sisters and five brothers, as follows : Mrs. Beulah Rockwell of Fort Recovery, O.; Mrs. Elsie Atkinson, of Portland; Mrs. Maud Phillips, of Nebraska; Mrs. Edith Meinholtz, of Colorado; Cooper and Clifford LeMaster, of Portland; Dr. O.O. LeMaster and Dr. W.W. LeMaster, of Sidney, O., and Arthur LeMaster, of Decatur.

The deceased had been a prominent worker in church affairs in Brazil for a number of years.  She was also a leader in civic and social circles and in all movements for the benefit of the city and its civic life.  She was a member of the First M.E. Church, a teacher in the Mothers' Cradle Roll class, an industrious worker in the Woman's League, a member of the Evening Choir and of the Home Missionary Society and was also formerly president of the Child Welfare section of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.  She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors.  Mrs. Yeager was a devoted mother and a pleasant and helpful neighbor and her untimely death will be mourned by a large circle of friends. 

The funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Bertha was my paternal great grandaunt, sister of my ancestor, Luman Cooper LeMaster.  This was the local obituary in the Brazil newspaper, I had previously written a post about the obituary that was posted in the Portland, Indiana paper.

Plaque Listing Madison County Indiana Recorders

While doing some research last year in the Madison County, Indiana Recorder's Office, I noticed this plaque which listed the names of all of the Recorders who have served through the years.

My maternal great aunt, Martha (Phillips) Lambertson, served as the Recorder from 1979 to 1986.

I had previously written a blog post about her career in politics, when she was elected to two terms as a Republican.

Looking at the other names on the plaque, I did not see any others that I recognized as being related.

Exploratory Data Analysis Through 2x-Great Grandaunts & Uncles

Though it took much longer that I had hoped, have finally finished by series of exploratory data analysis through my 2x-great grandaunts and granduncles.  Previously, I had written about my results through my 2x-great grandparents.  My next steps are to move on to my 3x-great grandparents as well as start work on some of Eileen's ancestors and Corinne's ancestors.

Working on this series has allowed me to find out where there are gaps in my research and has added much data.  Now I just need to follow up with my "to-do" lists before my next research trip to make sure I use my time effectively.

Exploratory Data Analysis: Una Maude (LeMaster) Phillips (1884-1968)

Una Maude (LeMaster) Phillips

Una Maude (LeMaster) Phillips (1884-1968) was my paternal great-grandaunt. What follows is an exploratory data analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about her.

1. Vital Records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

          Una Maude was born April 26, 1884 in Jay County, Indiana.  I do not yet have a copy of her birth certificate.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

               Will need to search contemporary newspapers to see if mention was made of Maude's birth.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

               I am not aware of any surviving Bible records from the LeMaster family. Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one does exist.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

               I am not aware of any baptismal record for Una Maude.  The family was affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal church in Salamonia, Indiana.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

               There is no indication that Una Maude was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

           Una Maude married Senator Winfield Phillips on December 22, 1907 in Jay County, Indiana.  I do not have a copy of their marriage license.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.2.1. Marriage notice in newspaper

               Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention of Una Maude and Senator's wedding.

          1.2.2. Anniversary notice

               Una Maude and Senator's 25th wedding anniversary would have been December 22, 1932.  Their 50th wedding anniversary would have been December 22, 1957.  Will need to search contemporary newspapers to see if any mention was made of anniversary celebrations.

          1.2.3. Divorce decree

               There is no indication that Maude and Senator were ever divorced.

     1.3. Death Certificate

           Una Maude died September 13, 1968 in David City, Butler County, Nebraska.  I do not have a copy of her death certificate.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items.

          1.3.1. Obituary in newspaper

               Una Maude's obituary appeared in the September 16, 1968 edition of the Commercial-Review in Portland, Indiana¹.  This obituary was the subject of a previous post.

               Will need to seek out a copy of her obituary in the local David City newspapers.

          1.3.2. Funeral home records

               When I've obtained a copy of her obituary from the local newspaper, will know which funeral home handled her arrangements.  Will then need to see if they have any records available.

          1.3.3. Tombstone photograph

               Will need to add obtaining a photograph of Una Maude's tombstone to my list of "to-do" items.

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1940 Federal Census

               On April 23, 1940, Una Maude was enumerated in the Senator W. Phillips household in David City, Butler County, Nebraska², as Una Maude, age 55, married, born in Indiana. She had resided at the same residence in 1935.  She had completed 1 year of college.  No occupation was listed.  Living in the household was her husband, Senator, age 56, born in Kansas, a veterinarian who owned his own practice.

          2.1.2. 1930 Federal Census

               On April 1, 1930, Una Maude was enumerated in the Senator W. Phillips household in David City, Butler County, Nebraska³, as Una Maude, age 45, married, born in Indiana.  She could read and write.  Her father was born in Ohio, her mother in New Jersey.  No occupation was listed.  Living in the household was her husband, Senator W., age 46, born in Kansas, a veterinarian, and son Donald, age 20, born in Oklahoma, and daughter Mary, age 19, born in Missouri.

          2.1.3. 1920 Federal Census

               On January 7, 1920, Una Maude was enumerated in the Senator W. Phillips household in the 4th district of David City, Butler County, Nebraska⁴, as Una M., age 35, married, born in Indiana.  She could read and write. Her father was born in Ohio and her mother in New York.  No occupation was listed.  Living in the household was her husband, Senator W., age 36, born in Kansas, a veterinarian, and son Donald, age 10, born in Oklahoma, and daughter, Mary, age 8, born in Missouri.

          2.1.4. 1910 Federal Census

               On April 25, 1910, Una Maude was enumerated in the Senator Phillips household in Sulphur City, Murray County, Oklahoma⁵, as Maud Phillips, age 25, married, born in Indiana.  She had been married for two years and was the mother of one child.  Her father was listed as being born in Mississippi and her mother in Missouri.  She could read and write and spoke English.  Living in the household was her husband, Senator, age 26, born in Kansas, a veterinarian surgeon, and son Donald K., age 1, born in Oklahoma.

          2.1.5. 1900 Federal Census

               On June 4, 1900, Una Maude was enumerated in the Luman C. Lemasters household in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana⁶, as Una M. Lemasters, age 16, born April 1884 in Indiana.  Her father was born in Ohio and her mother in New Jersey.  She attended school and could read and write and spoke English.

     2.2. State Census Records

          The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913 and 1921.  These, however, were merely for the purposes of legislative apportionment.

          The State of Nebraska conducted state census, but they were in the period before Una Maude was living in there.


     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

          I have not yet investigated these types of records to see what information they might shed on the Phillips household.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

          Not applicable, as Una Maude was female.

     3.2. Pension Records

          I am not aware of any military service by her husband or father that would have made Una Maude eligible for a military pension.  Her father served in the Civil War, but I don't believe she ever received any minor's benefits.

     3.3. Service Records

          Not applicable, as Una Maude was female.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

          Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Murray County, Oklahoma and Butler County, Nebraska to see what items might mention Senator and Una Maude.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items.

     4.2. Plat map / county map

          Plat maps were published for Butler County, Nebraska that might aid in my research.  Will contact the local historical society and see what information these maps might contain.

5. Supplemental records

     Supplemental records available for research on Una Maude include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my "to-do" items for my next research trip.

     In 1922, Una Maude was listed as a resident of David City, Nebraska, in the obituary of her sister, Bertha⁷.

     In 1927, Una Maude was listed as a resident of David City, Nebraska, in the obituary of her mother⁸.

     In 1931, Una Maude was listed as a resident of David City, Nebraska, in the obituary of her father⁹.

     In 1933, Una Maude was listed as a resident of David City, Nebraska, in the obituary of her brother, Luman Cooper¹⁰.

1829 - Esther BEALS married Jacob CARSON in Clinton County, Ohio.  Esther was the daughter of John BEALS and Mary JOHNSON.

1909 - Josephine Alice HEATON born.  Josephine was the daughter of Floyd Wesley HEATON and Nell Ellis WOOD.

1924 - Amanda Matilda OVER died in Lodi, Medina County, Ohio.  Amanda was the daughter of David SHERRICK and Susan JACOBS.

1945 - Hubert LEMASTERS died in Ord, Valley County, Nebraska.  Hubert was the son of Jacob LEMASTERS and Sarah Ann HALFHILL.

1826 - Elvira HUNT married William W. BOWMAN in Guilford County, North Carolina.  Elvira was the daughter of Isom HUNT and Margaret BUNDY.


1841 - Christina LEWIS born in Wayne County, Indiana.  Christina was the daughter of Solomon LEWIS and Margaret RINEHART.


1846 - John Jackson CUMMINGS born in Winston County, Alabama.  John was the son of Abner CUMMINGS and Mary WRIGHT.


1855 - Hannah MILLS married Isaac S. POE in Morgan County, Indiana.  Hannah was the daughter of Henry MILLS and Hannah WOODWARD.  Isaac was the son of John W. POE and Elizabeth RAINS.  They were my 4x-great grandparents.

1816 - Joseph WARDLAW born.  Joseph was the son of Hugh WARDLAW and Rebecca HIRONS.


1820 - Curtis JACKSON married Rebecca SMITH.  Curtis was the son of Curtis JACKSON and Ruth BEALS.

Two Candidates Aided By Late Returns

This newspaper clipping from 1978 details the election victory of my maternal great aunt, Martha (PHILLIPS) LAMBERTSON as the Madison County, Indiana Recorder.  Her victory was considered an upset, according to the paper.

Martha was elected to her first term in 1978, and re-elected in 1982.  She was a Republican, though her husband, Harold, was a lifelong Democrat.

Martha Lambertson is completing her first term as Madison County Recorder.  She was elected to this post in 1978 after serving many years both in and out of government service.  Martha prepared for the job of Recorder by working 16 years (7 years as office manager) of the Elwood Water Company.  She also served over two years as a Deputy Clerk of Madison County and 2 additional years as Office Maintenance Manager of the State Highway Office in Anderson.

Since being elected Recorder in 1978 Martha and her staff have improved the efficiency of the office.  Intensified training of each deputy and improved procedures have resulted in the best possible services to Madison County residents.  Constantly striving to improve the office, Martha attends yearly State Board of Accounts Training Seminars on new laws as well as an annual educational workshop scheduled the Indiana Association of Counties and Cities.  Martha has also been active in the State Recorders Association.

A life-long resident of Elwood and Pipe Creek Township, Martha is married and is the mother of 2 children.   She is a member of the First Baptist Church in Elwood.

MARY ATKINSON DIES SUDDENLY


Heart Attack Suffered Friday Morning Proves Fatal


Mrs. Mary Elsie Atkinson, aged 70, died suddenly Friday morning at 10:30 o'clock, from a heart attack while she was preparing for a visit with friends in Ohio.


Death occurred on the LeMaster farm, one mile west of Salamonia, where she had spent the greater part of her life.


The deceased was a daughter of L.W. and Mary K. (Chew) LeMaster, and was born in Darke county, Ohio, April 26, 1872.


On September 15, 1894, she was united in marriage to Mathias J. Atkinson, who preceded her in death, August 24, 1923.


Surviving are a foster son, Albert Franks, of Detroit, Michigan, who was reared in the home, and the following brothers and sisters; Edith, wife of Henry Meinholtz, of Colorado Springs; Maude, wife of Dr. S.W. Phillips, of David City, Nebraska; Arthur (Art) LeMaster, of Portland; and Dr. D.W. LeMaster, of Sidney, Ohio.  Four brothers and two sisters are deceased.


The body was removed to the Williamson funeral home for preparation, and where it will remain.
