Wright Family Bible Record, Brown County, Ohio

Received these copies of seven pages from the Brown County Genealogical Society, Georgetown, Ohio of a family Bible that contained information about my Wright family, particularly George Wright (1780-1853).  According to the note attached to the copies, the Bible is owned by Charles Henderson of Locust Ridge, Ohio.  I do not know how Mr. Henderson fits into my Wright family.

This first page has the typewritten note on the side "Bible owned by Charles Henderson of Locust Ridge, Ohio".

PARENT'S RECORD
FATHER
George Wright born July 31, 1780
MOTHER
Elisabeth Wright born June 16, 1781
There is another name written under Elisabeth, "U.C. Malott departed this Life the 13th day of Feb. 1902"
George Wright (1780-1853) is my maternal 5th-great grandfather.  His wife was Elizabeth Robins (1781-1857).  Their dates of birth in my database match this Bible record, though my sources were family group sheets that may have been derived from this particular Bible record. I do not know who the U.C. Malott is, though it is obviously from a different handwriting.  I did find a FindAGrave record for a Uriah C. Malott (1821-1902).

 BIRTHS
 William R. Hall born Dec. 24, 1817
Susannah Wright born May 21, 1819
John Wright born Nov. 7, 1814
Samuel P. Wright born Sept. 22, 1816
Sarah Wright born Nov. 22, 1821
Asenath Wright born June 25, 1825

William R. Hall is William Riley Hall, the husband of Susannah Wright, daughter of George & Elizabeth (Robins) Wright.  The other Wright's listed : John, Samuel P., Sarah and Asenath are all children of George & Elizabeth.  One known child is not listed, that being Rebecca A., born circa 1826.  These birth dates match my database, except for John's birth, which I had as November 4, 1814.  Again, my dates come from family group sheets that may have been compiled from these Bible records, sort of a circular reference.

 MARRIAGES
William R. Hall and Elisabeth Susannah Wright was united in Wedlock Oct. 29th 1840
Sidney Ogden and Susannah Hall was united in wedlock Oct 2, 1857

This is the marriage record of William Riley Hall and Susannah Wright (daughter of George and Elizabeth (Robins) Wright.  They were married in Brown County, Ohio.  William died May 22, 1855, and Susannah remarried to Sidney Ogden on October 2, 1857 in Brown County, Ohio.  This makes me believe that the Bible was passed down through Susannah's heirs.

This fourth page from the Genealogical Society is actually the same as the first page, notating the births of George and Elizabeth Wright.  However, at the top of the page, someone has written "This is George Wright b. 1780 s/o John & Sarah Fleming.  George is a brother to Joseph b. 1798".   I have George as being the son of John and Sarah (Fleming) Wright as well, with a brother Joseph, b. 1798.  However, I've yet to find a record anywhere that gives Sarah's maiden name.  I believe that this record from the society may be where the Fleming name has come into the record.

The fifth page from the society is actually the same as the second page above, containing the birth records.  On this page, someone has written the names of the family members below, apparently an attempt to make them easier to read.

William P. Hall
Susannah Wright
John Wright
Samuel P. Wright
Sarah Wright
Asenath Wright

The sixth page from the society was the marriages, which was a duplicate of the third page above, showing the two marriages of Susannah Wright, the first to William R. Hall, the second to Sidney Ogden.

The seventh page from the society contains the listings of the deaths in the family.

DEATHS
George Wright deceased August 15, 1853
Elizabeth Wright deceased Nov.  23, 1857
Sarah Hendrixson deceased Feb 9, 1858
This is the death mention for my 5th-great grandparents, George and Elizabeth (Robins) Wright.  The dates match what I have in my database, though the date for Elizabeth I had November 22nd.  The Sarah Hendrixson is their daughter, Sarah Wright (b. 1820) who married Allen Hendrixson in 1839 in Brown County, Ohio.

It would appear that what the Brown County Genealogical Society has provided are copies from a multi-generational family Bible.  Likely one of George and Elizabeth (Robins) Wright's children possessed this Bible and then it passed on to other members of the family.  The birth and death dates are recorded for George and Elizabeth, as well as the births of five of their six children, the death of one and the marriage record of another.  My guess is that it was used by Susannah (Wright) Hall Odgen, since both of her marriages are recorded.

How the Malott name is connected to the family and how the Charles Henderson who now possesses the Bible is related will be a mystery for another day.

Susanna (Wright) Hall Odgen (b.1819 OH)

Sidney Ogden household, 1860 U.S. census, population schedule, Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio, USA, Buford P.O., dwelling 712, family 710; National Archives micropublication M653, roll 987.
William Hall household, 1850 U.S. census, population schedule, Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio, USA, District 178, dwelling 305, family 305; National Archives micropublication M432, roll 694.

Correspondence will a researcher of the HALL family of Highland County, Ohio has led me to research more about Susanna (WRIGHT) HALL OGDEN, daughter of George and Elizabeth (ROBINS) WRIGHT.  She was the younger sister of my maternal 4x great-grandfather, John WRIGHT.

Susanna was born May 21, 1819 in Brown County, Ohio1,2.  On October 29, 1840 in Brown County, Ohio, she married William Riley HALL1,2,3, son of Patrick and Mary (REESE) HALL.

On September 13, 1850, William and Susanna were enumerated in Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio4.  William's occupation was that of a farmer with real estate valued at $ 1000.  He was aged 32 and born in Ohio. Wife Susanna was listed as aged 31, also born in Ohio.  Living in the household with them is an unidentified Edmund Hesler, age 4, born in Ohio.

Susanna and William were living next door to William's brother, John Reese Hall and his wife Lucrieta.  The Alexander Bratten family was their other neighbor.

William died May 22, 1855 and is buried in the Hall cemetery, Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio3.  Susanna married secondly to Sidney Ogden.

On June 25, 1860, Sidney and Susan were enumerated in Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio5.  Sidney's occupation was that of a farmer with real estate valued at $ 1800 and a personal estate valued at $ 285.  He was aged 46 and born in New York.  Wife Susan was listed as age 41, born in Ohio.  Living in the household were two children of Sidney's first marriage, Samantha, aged 15 and John, aged 8, both born in Ohio.  Also in the household were a servant, Elizabeth Hutchens [?] and a farm laborer, John Webber [?].  Both of their names were very hard to read.

Living next door to them was a Samuel and Rebecca WARDLOW and a widowed Mary HALL.  Not sure of the relationships, but the Wright and Wardlow families were known to be related in Brown County.

On June 8, 1870, Sidney and Susan were enumerated in Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio6.  Sidney's occupation was listed as a farmer with real estate valued at $ 1080 and a personal estate valued at $ 261.  He was aged 56 and born in New York.  Wife Susan was listed as age 51, born in Ohio.

On June 10, 1880, Sidney and Susan were enumerated in Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio7.  Sidney's occupation was listed as blacksmith.  He was born in New York and both of his parents were as well.  Wife Susan was listed as age 61, born in Ohio with both parents born in Pennsylvania.

To date I have not yet discovered the dates of death or burial place of Sidney and Susan.

Who Burned Down the Opera House?

According to the 1920 census of Victor, Teller County, Colorado, my paternal great granduncle, William Clifford LeMASTER was the proprietor of a theatre.  He was living as a lodger in the Francis P. Hall household.  His age was listed as 46 and marital status was given as divorced.  Also living with him was his son, Ralph, aged 17, who was working as an express driver.

Source: Francis P. Hall household, 1920 U.S. census, population schedule, Victor, Teller County, Colorado, ED 238, SD 3, sheet 9, dwelling 192, family 207; Ancestry.com [database on-line].

This finding in the 1920 census jives with information given in the biographical sketch of William's father, Luman Walker LeMASTERS Jr., in Milton T. Jay's History of Jay County, Indiana, on page 197, where it states that William was the proprietor of a motion picture theater in Victor, Colorado.

Previously, William had been a bank cashier at banks in both Elyria, Ohio and Fort Collins, Colorado.  Sometime between 1910 and 1920, probably around the time of his divorce, he switched occupations.

Several weeks ago, I discovered the website Opera in Old Colorado, which had some information and photos of the old opera house in Victor, Colorado.  This opera house was the one being used to house the movie theater.  The opera house burned September 27, 1920, and the website stated that W.C. LeMaster had burned it down to obtain the insurance money.  Very interesting story, indeed!

I immediately contacted the website's author, in order to obtain more information.  He was able to send me the following:
I have attached an item about the burning of the Victor Opera House from the Fort Collins Courier, Monday, Sept 27, 1920.  At the moment I cannot locate the source of the information about the owner burning the building to collect the insurance.  I will try to do so sometime next week when I can get into the library at CSU to search some newspapers of the time.  If you have access to microfilms of the Rocky Mountain News, you might look at some issues on and after September 27, 1920, to see if you can verify the information.

Cripple Creek has $100,000 fire in Big Opera House

CRIPPLE CREEK, Sept. 27 - The Victor Opera House, the largest structure in the Cripple Creek district, was destroyed by fire at noon today.  The building was valued at $100,000.  No one was in the opera house at the time.  The origin of the fire is a mystery.  The opera house was being used as a motion picture theatre.

Though intriguing, this tidbit didn't mention W.C. LeMaster by name, but it did confirm that the opera house was being used as a motion picture theatre.

The owner of the Opera in Old Colorado website did contact me this week with an update to the information :
I am unable to locate the source of the information about W. C. Le Master burning the Victor Opera House.  I believe it was from a university dissertation, but I cannot find a written record to verify it.  I have found a newspaper account from 1920 that give a different story (see attached).  I do not know which is the more accurate one, but as I do have a copy of the newspaper story, I have used some of the information from it for a modified version now on the website.

Fire raised its ugly head again in September 1920, when the Victor Opera House burned.  At the time, the opera house was said to be the largest structure in the Cripple Creek District and had played host to many famous performers.  Built at an original cost of $65,000, the building was a total loss estimated at $100,000.  The opera house's owner, E.H. Hall of Denver, was insured for no more than $6,500, which was not enough enough to replace even the impressive $7,000 organ.  The opera house was never rebuilt.

The website is now updated with this new information.  Jack Dempsey began his career in Victor and boxed at the opera house.  The search will continue for more information about this mysterious fire.

Another question: what is the relationship between E.H. Hall of Denver and the Francis P. Hall, in whose home William Clifford LeMaster was a boarder in 1920?

I have reached out to the Pikes Peak Library District to see if they have newspaper articles regarding the fire to clear up this mystery.
