George M. Anderson household, 1940, Seneca County, Ohio

Located the 1940 census record of the George M. Anderson household in Seneca County, Ohio.  George's wife, Ona, was my maternal 2nd cousin 5 times removed.  Our common ancestors were Alexander Crockett and Elizabeth Watkins.  Ona's parents were William Perry Crockett and Blanche Alida Weaver.

1940 U.S. census, Seneca County, Ohio, population schedule, Fostoria, enumeration district (ED) 74-14B, SD 13, sheet 4A, 202 North Union Street, household 85, ; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 23 February 2017); National Archives, Washington, D.C..
At the time of the enumeration, the family was living in Fostoria.  The census states that George was renting his home for $30 per month.  George was 48 years old and born in Wisconsin.  His wife, Eva, was 44 years old and born in Indiana.  In 1935 their residence was in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio.

The record shows that George had completed 5 years of college and that his occupation was listed as a Clergyman.  His wife, Eva, had completed 1 year of college, but had no occupation listed.

Also living in the household were son George O., age 20, born in Iowa, who had completed 1 year of college; Helen, age 14, born in Illinois, who had completed the 8th grade; and Elliott M., age 12, born in Indiana, who had completed the 5th grade.

If you have any additional information or are related to this family, I would love to hear from you.

Arthur D. Weaver household, 1940, Lake County, Indiana

Located the 1940 census record of the Arthur D. Weaver household in Lake County, Indiana.  Arthur's wife, Olive, was my maternal 2nd cousin 5 times removed.  Our common ancestors were Alexander Crockett and Elizabeth Watkins. Olive's parents were William Perry Crockett and Sarah E. McCauley. Arthur's parents were Oran Weaver and Mahala Frame.

1940 U.S. census, Lake County, Indiana, population schedule, Ward 3, Hobart, enumeration district (ED) 45-18, SD 1, sheet 7B, 1104 Devonshire, household 181, ; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 23 February 2017); National Archives, Washington, D.C..
At the time of the enumeration, Arthur and his wife were living in Ward 3 of the city of Hobart.  The census states that Arthur owned his home and that the value was $5000 and it was not a farm.  Arthur was 76 years old and was born in New York.  His wife, Olive, was 67 years old and was born in Illinois.  In 1935, their residence was the same place.

According to my database, they were the parents of 7 children : Frederick, Lola, Jesse, Bessie, Edna, William and Coletta.  None of them were living in the household in the 1940 census.

The record shows that Arthur and Olive had both completed the 8th grade in education.  Neither of them had an occupation listed in the census.

If you have any additional information or are related to this family, I'd love to hear from you.

What was he doing in Kansas?

Old newspapers are fun to research in because of the tidbits of information you will find.  I always enjoy the local sections, where the comings and goings of people both near and far are told - sort of like the Facebook of the 19th century.

This particular piece in the Portland, Indiana Daily Commercial regarding a cousin, John Preston Metzner (1872-1900) was particularly intriguing.  Why was he in Abilene, Kansas?  No known relatives were living there.
Portland Daily Commercial, Portland, Indiana
July 3, 1899, page 3
Press Metzner, who has been spending several weeks at Abaline, [sic] Kansas, has returned home.
John Preston Metzner was the son of Louis Napoleon and Henrietta (Weaver) Metzner.  He didn't live a very long life, dying at 28 years old on April 7, 1900 in Bearcreek Township, Jay County, Indiana.

Perhaps he was in Kansas for his health.  I haven't yet researched the cause of death, maybe his visit was to a sanitarium.  Or, he could have been working out there or just visiting.  As yet, this is just a tidbit in the life of a man cut short.

A link to his memorial page at FindAGrave is located here.

Cummings Family Winston County, Alabama

While at the Genealogy Center in Ft. Wayne, I looked at the Family Maps of Winston County Alabama by Gregory Boyd for the Cummings family.  This book is one that I will need to add to my library, as I feel I will need to go back to it again and again.  Found some of Eileen’s relatives under a number of different spelling variations, including Cummins and Comeens.

Land purchases made in the pre-Civil War era help place these individuals next to each other, indicating close relationships.  For instance, Eileen’s known ancestor Wyatt Cummings, or Wiatt Cummins in the record, was in Section 27 next to Patrick Cummins as well as Riley Cummins.  Other families in the same section include Henson, Miller and Weaver.  Wyatt’s wife was Marguerite Henson.

Wyatt’s father, Spencer, had land in Section 22 and Lindsay Commens had land in Section 23, all in close proximity.  While I’ve seen some of this information before from the BLM GLO Records, it was nice to see them in a map format so that I could locate how closely the families lived to each other.

Now I just need to work out the details and abstract the records for my files.

John and Catherine lived out their lives in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana where John farmed. They moved there from Licking County, Ohio circa 1850.

John died on January 10, 1888 in Jay County, Indiana and Catherine followed him on June 22, 1910 in Jay County.

Arthur Augustus Metzner family - Jay County, Indiana

Arthur A. Metzner and family appear in the 1910 census of Bearcreek Township, Jay County, Indiana. Arthur was the son of Louis Napoleon and Henrietta (Weaver) Metzner, and my paternal first cousin three times removed.

In the 1910 census, Arthur was listed as a 31 year old farmer, who could read and write and whose home was mortgaged. He was born in Indiana, and his father was born in Ohio and mother in Indiana as well. Arthur was listed as being married for 9 years. His wife, Laura D. Reid, was listed as Lura D., a 28 year old mother of 3 children with all 3 living. She was born in Kansas, with both parents listed as being born in Indiana.

Three children were listed with the family : Vada E., aged 8; Hazel L., aged 3; and Fern D. age 1 year and 7 months. All of these children were born in Indiana. The names conflict with some other records I had previously found in the WPA indices for Jay County birth records. In those records, I had found a female born August 20, 1901; a female born June 7, 1906 and a Clara L. Metzner born September 12, 1908. While the first two could match Vada and Hazel; how Clara could be mistaken for Fern I do not know. More research in Jay County will have to be done to straighten that out.

Also living with the family in the 1910 was Arthur's mother, Henrietta, although she was listed as Harriet Metzner, aged 57, a widow born in Indiana; with father born in Pennsylvania and mother born in Ohio. Henrietta's husband, Louis, had died shortly after the 1900 census on July 3, 1900 in Bearcreek Township, Jay County, Indiana.

Louis N. Metzner household - Jay Co., IN

The Louis N. METZNER household was enumerated in the 1870 & 1900 census of Jay Co., IN. Louis was the son of John and Catherine (YOUNG) METZNER.

In the 1870 census, Louis was a 21 year old student, living in Wayne Twp., with a College Corner post office. He was born in Ohio and both parents were listed as foreign born. He had a James H. GRAVES, aged 20, also attending school, living with him. I believe that this census record is recording Louis away at college.

In the 1900 census, Louis was listed as a 51 year old farmer, born November 1848 in Ohio, both parents born in Germany. Louis owned his home and it was mortgaged. His wife, Henrietta, was listed as Hariet, aged 46, born January 1854 in Indiana. Her father was born in Pennsylvania, and her mother was born in Ohio. She was the mother of 5 children, only one of whom was still living : Arthur A. , aged 21, born August 1879, a single farmer.

Shortly after the 1900 census record of June 25th, Louis died - his death occurred on July 3rd.
