Ancestor Approved Award

Sunday I was notified by Susan at Long Lost Relatives.net that my blog was being recognized with the Ancestor Approved award.

The award comes with the following requests:

1. List ten (10) that you have learned about your ancestors that surprised, humbled or enlightened you.

2. Pass the award to ten (10) other genealogy bloggers.

What things I have learned about my ancestors:

1. Some ancestors created volumes of newspaper accounts, court records and other vital records, while others seemed to disappear into thin air.

2. There is a fair amount of inter-connectedness among my family lines.  It seems the farther back I trace, I see the different family lines ending up in the same locales.

3. Almost anything can be found in the paper, especially stories of divorces and other scandals.  Back then, apparently libel laws weren't as stringent - but the accounts make for more colorful reading.

4. Faith in God was vital to my ancestors. I've discovered fair number of ministers, elders and Sunday School teachers from a variety of Protestant denominations in my family.

5. The economic, political and social conditions that cause people to switch careers or move across the country today are some of the same ones that caused my ancestors to do the same.  Understanding what was happening in historical perspective can explain some of the decisions they made.

6. Many of my ancestors were willing to fight for what they believed in, whether it be in the military or in politics.

7. Most of my ancestors were here before the American Revolution, but documenting their journeys after they arrived has proven to be the most interesting.

8. The stories that the present generation remembers about the past generation are important and need to be preserved, even if they are biased or colored by their perspective.

9. Not all of my ancestors were saints, and the sinners weren't as bad as I'd imagined.

10. My ancestors didn't always get along with the other members of their family, but neither do I, so I needn't be so quick to judge.

I am going to pass the award on to the following bloggers :

Donna's Genealogy Blog - Donna Moughty

Renee's Genealogy Blog - Renee Zamora

Roots and Rambles - Marian Pierre-Louis

A Geek Girl Does Genealogy - The Geek Girl

John Brown Kin - Alice Mecoy

Leaf, Stem, Branch and Root - Kevin Thompson

Penny's Genes - Penny

Reflections from the Fence - Carol

She Finds Graves - Kellie Walton

The Canty Quest - Debbie Golding

These blogs are ones that I follow daily through my Google Reader.  If you're not already following them, I would strongly urge you to check them out.

An Honor To Be Considered

Wow! What an honor it is to be mentioned along with so many great genealogy blogs at MyHeritage.com's Top 100 Genealogy Blogs.

I follow many of these blogs, so I know the quality and I'm humbled to even be considered.  According to Thomas at GeneaBloggers, 81 of the top 100 are members of the GeneaBloggers community.  Congratulations to everyone mentioned!

I only hope I can add quality content to this blog and keep readers interested.

Thanks for stopping by!

Ancestor Approved

I'm honored to have been awarded the 'Ancestor Approved' award by Theresa at Tangled Trees and Julie at GenBlog. Now I have to pass it on to others in the geneablogger community, as well as list 10 things that have surprised, humbled or enlightened me through my genealogical research.

Surprised:

1. By how much there still is to learn about my family, even after all these years of working on my genealogy.

2. To find out that I'm my own cousin several times over - I'm a victim of pedigree collapse.

3.  That so many 'skeletons' aren't so bad when seen in the light of today.  People are people, the really interesting ones make the newspapers!

Humbled:

4. By the courage of my ancestors who made the decision to journey to a new world - whether to escape persecution, seek fortune or simply start anew.

5. To find that so many others are willing to help share their research expertise and go the 'extra mile' to help out a fellow genealogist.

6. The sacrifices made by those who served in times of war to protect our freedoms or to ensure that others had the same chances.

Enlightened:

7. To find out that I had a Mayflower ancestor - Stephen Hopkins (still need to 'prove' it)

8. With a desire to gain knowledge of the history of the times my ancestors lived, whether it be colonial days or Civil War

9. To find that I'm not the only one out there - there is a great community of geneabloggers on the Internet, each with their own story to tell.

10. By the fact that no piece of evidence should be overlooked, and that the case is never closed on a genealogical conclusion!

My Kreativ Blogger Awards

I just want to say thank you to two of my fellow Geneabloggers, Thomas MacEntee of Destination Austin Family and Hummer of Branching Out Through the Ye for their gift of the Kreativ Blogger award recently.  It is nice to receive the encouragement and compliments of my fellow geneabloggers.  If you haven't already, you should really check out their blogs and add them to your daily reading.

As part of the challenge of the award, I must reveal seven things about myself that I have not previously revealed either in a blog post or on Twitter.  Here goes:
  • In high school, I was a co-captain of the wrestling team.  Though not a great wrestler, I did really enjoy the sport, and wish I was still in as good of shape as I was back then.
  • I really enjoy living history events, and if I could afford it and had the time, would be a Civil War re-enactor.
  • Though I've been to Europe, I would really love to visit England.
  • Genealogy is in my blood, my maternal 4th-great grandfather, John Beals, authored the "Chronology of the Beals family", which started me on a quest for my roots.
  • I would love to travel to New England and also see the Rockies.
  • Majored in political science and minored in German and history at college, ended up in finance - go figure!
  • I would love to retire to a warmer climate, perhaps the Carolinas or Tennessee.
And now I need to pass this award on to another seven of my fellow bloggers:
