Trying to gather information on more recent generations and helping to share family memories, photos and stay connected - I created a Facebook group page for descendants of my paternal 2nd-great grandparents, Luman Walker Lemasters and Mary Keziah Chew.

Luman Walker Lemasters Jr. (b.19 Oct 1842 Shelby Co., OH; d. 18 Nov 1931 Salamonia, Jay Co., IN) & Mary Keziah Chew (b. 13 Feb 1847 Mt. Holly, Burlington Co., NJ; d. 22 Feb 1927 Madison Twp., Jay Co., IN) were married 2 Oct 1864 at Versailles, Darke Co., OH.  

They were the parents of the following children:

Spelling variations of the surname sometimes included a final 's' and capital 'M'.  Most common spelling of the surname today is LeMaster.

Am I Really Irish?

While celebrating St. Patrick's Day yesterday at work by dressing up all in green, I was asked if I was Irish, as LeMaster didn't strike a co-worker as a particularly Irish name.  I've been working on my genealogy off and on for years, and have identified a few Irish ancestors - though some were actually Scots-Irish.

My DNA results for ethnicity from Ancestry did show 17% Irish.  

Irish Ancestors :

[unknown] Gary : My paternal 4th-great grandfather, an as yet unknown man, was reported as being born in Ireland by my 3rd-great grandmother on the 1880 census.  Rachel Gary was born March 25, 1816 in Fairfield County, Ohio.  This is the only paternal Irish line that I'm aware of at the moment.

Martha McPheeters : Martha was my maternal 7th-great grandmother, the daughter of William McPheeters and Rebecca Thompson.  Martha was born in Ireland. She married Samuel Downey in Pennsylvania and died 1801 in Clark County, Kentucky. She was the mother of at least ten children: Ann, Betsey, Isabella, Margaret, Martha, Rebecca, Samuel, William, Mary and Janet.

Peter Swafford : Peter was my maternal 7th-great grandfather.  According to my database he was born circa 1740 in Dublin, Ireland and died in Greenville, South Carolina.  He married Rennie Howard and was the father of eight children.

Rennie Howard : Rennie was my maternal 7th-great grandmother, the wife of Peter Swafford.  According to my database, she was born circa 1745 in Dublin, Ireland and died in South Carolina.  She was the mother of eight children: Jacob, Isaac, William, Paul, Abraham, Aaron, John and Thomas.

Elizabeth Hedge : Elizabeth was my maternal 7th-great grandmother, the wife of David Crockett.  According to my database, she was born 1730 in Ireland and died August 1777 in Hawkins County, North Carolina.  She was the mother of at least three children: William, John and Alexander.

William Wardlaw : William was my maternal 7th-great grandfather, the son of Robert Wardlaw.  According to my database, he was born circa 1700 in either Scotland or Ireland.  He married Jane Harper and died in 1762 in Augusta County, Virginia.  He was the father of seven children : James, John, Hugh, Joseph, Robert, William and Margaret.

Joshua Hadley : Joshua was my maternal 8th-great grandfather, the son of Simon and Ruth Hadley.  Joshua was born March 6, 1703 in Kings County, Ireland.  He married Patience Brown in 1735 and died after 1760 in Cane Creek, North Carolina.  He was the father of nine children: Mary, Jeremiah, Joshua, Joseph, Deborah, Hannah, Catherine, Lydia and Simon.

William Millikan : William was my maternal 8th-great grandfather.  According to my database, he was born circa 1720 in Ireland.  He married in 1740 Chester County, Pennsylvania to Jane White.  He was the father of ten children: Abigail, Sarah, David, Mary, William, Benjamin, Hannah, Alexander, Martha and Samuel.

William McPheeters : William was my maternal 8th-great grandfather.  According to my database, he was born between 1687 and 1691 in Ireland and died in 1773 in Augusta County, Virginia.  He married Rebecca Thompson and was the father of eight children: Martha, Anne, Mary, John, David, Janett, Samuel and William.

Willam McPheeters : William was my maternal 9th-great grandfather.  He was born circa 1662 in Scotland.  He married Janet McClellan and died circa 1699 in Ireland.  

Simon Hadley : Simon was my maternal 9th-great grandfather, the son of Simon Hadley.  According to my database, Simon was born 1677 in Ireland and died 1756 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  He was married to Ruth [surname unknown] and the father of eight children.

Ruth [surname unknown]: Ruth was my maternal 9th-great grandmother, the wife of Simon Hadley.  According to my database, she was born in 1677 in Ireland and died December 8, 1750 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  She was the mother of eight children : Joseph, Deborah, Joshua, Simon, Hannah, Ruth, Catherine and Ann.

John Allen : John was my maternal 9th-great grandfather, the son of John Allen.  According to my database, John was born August 3, 1694 in Ireland.  He married Amy Cox in March 1719 in Chester County, Pennsylvania and died September 16, 1771 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  He was the father of nine children : John, Rebecca, Amy, Elizabeth, William, Joseph, Mary, Phebe and Benjamin.

Simon Hadley : Simon was my maternal 10th-great grandfather.  According to my database, he was born 1640 in Ireland and died circa 1711.  He married Katherine Talbot and was the father of at least four children : John, Elizabeth, Jane and Simon.

Thomas Dixon : Thomas was my maternal 10th-great grandfather, the husband of Rose.  All I have in my database is that he was born before 1635 in Ireland and died after 1680 in New Castle County, Delaware. 

Rose [unknown surname] : Rose was my maternal 10th-great grandmother, the wife of Thomas Dixon.  All I have in my database is that she was born before 1641 in Ireland and died after 1671 in Delaware.  She was the mother of at least three children: William, Dinah and Rose.

Looking over these names, I realize I have a lot more research to do on these lines to fill in the gaps in the research.

Elvin Cox household, 1940, Butler County, Kansas

Located the 1940 census record of the Elvin Cox household in Butler County, Kansas.  Elvin is my maternal 3rd cousin 4 times removed.  Our common ancestors are Charles Davis and Hannah Piggott.  He is also my 6th cousin 5 times removed through James Brown and Honour Clayton.  His wife, Lavina, is my 1st cousin 5 times removed through John W. Davis and Mary Barker.  Hannah's parents were Nathan Davis and Dinah Kemp Hobson.  Elvin's parents were Reuben Cox and Eliza Jane Pearson.

At the time of the enumeration, Elvin and his wife were living in Richland Township.  The census states that Elvin owned his home and that it was a farm valued at $1000.  Elvin was 64 years old and born in Kansas.  His wife, Lavina, was 64 years old and born in Indiana.  In 1935 their residence was the same place.

The record shows that Elvin had completed the 8th grade and that Lavina had completed 4 years of high school. Elvin's occupation was listed as a farmer, and Lavina had no occupation listed.

According to my database, they were the parents of nine children, none of whom were living with them in the 1940 census.  Their names were : Genevieve, Evadne, Waldena, Kermitt Merrill, Marcella, Rhonda, Elvin Smilas, Victor S., and Vestal H.

Surname Saturday : Brown

The BROWN surname is in my maternal line.  The origins of the surname are English and were members of the Society of Friends.  I descend from two sons of Richard Brown at least three different ways.

Stories and history :

Ahnentafel # 1877: Margery Brown (1691-1737).  Margery was born 1691 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  She married John Piggott (c1680-1738) on January 18, 1713.  John was born circa 1680 in England.  They had at least three children.  John died January 29, 1738 in Cecil County, Maryland.  Margery died December 14, 1737.

Ahnentafel # 1879 : Patience Brown (1712-1783). Patience was born 5mo 24d 1712.  She married Joshua Hadley (1703-c1760) in 1735.  Joshua was born March 6, 1703 in Kings County, Ireland.  They had nine children.  Joshua died circa 1760 at Cane Creek, North Carolina.  Patience died 5mo 23da 1783 at Cane Creek Monthly Meeting, North Carolina.

Ahnentafel # 1887 : Mary Brown (1706-1739).  Mary was born 4mo 29da 1706.  She married William Reynolds (1701-1772).  William was born 7mo 5da 1701.  They had six children and were members of the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting.  William died October 1772 in Rowan County, North Carolina.  Mary died July 1, 1739 in Nottingham Pennsylvania.

Ahnentafel # 3754 : Same as # 7516.

Ahnentafel # 3758 : Jeremiah Brown (1687-1767).  Jeremiah was born 1687 in Marcus Hook, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.  He married Mary Royales (1687-1749) in February 1711 at West Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania.  Mary was born 1687 in Sunderland County, Scotland.  She died July 31, 1749 at Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania.  Jeremiah died March 7, 1767.

Ahnentafel # 3774 : William Brown (1658-1746).  William was born March 29, 1658 in Puddington, Northampton, England.  We married thirdly to Catherine Williams (c1680-     ).  They had at least three children.  William died June 23, 1746 at West Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Ahnentafel # 7508 : Same as # 7548.

Ahnentafel # 7516 : James Brown (1655-1716).  James was born March 27, 1655.  He married Honour Clayton (1662-aft1715).  Honour was born 1mo 16da 1662 at Rumboldswyke, Sussex, England.  They had seven children.  She died after 1715.  James died February 1, 1716.

Ahnentafel # 7548 : Richard Brown (1630-1662).  Richard was born in 1630 in Puddington, Northampton, England.  He married Mary _____.  They had at least two children.  Richard died September 28, 1662 in Puddington, Northampton, England.

The BROWN(E) surname is in my maternal line.  The origins of the surname are English.

Stories and history :

Ahnentafel # 1539 : Martha Brown (1699-1774).  Martha was born June 16, 1699.  She married William Fessenden (1694-1756) on January 4, 1728 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  William was born 1694 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  They had eight children.  William died May 26, 1756 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  Martha died February 23, 1774 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.

Ahnentafel # 3078 : Rev. Ichabod Brown (1666-    ). Ichabod was born September 5, 1666 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  He married Martha Woodbury (1677-    ) on May 31, 1693 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  Martha was born in 1677 in Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts.  They had at least one daughter.  

Ahnentafel # 6156 : Thomas Browne married Martha Eaton.  Nothing further known.

DNA Match : Cousin Lila

Made a DNA connection at 23andMe with cousin Lila, who shares 1 segment of DNA with my mother.  None of that DNA passed to me, at least not enough for Lila to show up as a match on my DNA relatives.

We've been trading messages back and forth, and by looking at her family tree I was able to find the connection - through the Hadley family.  This is one of the Quaker lines that stretches pretty far back.

Joshua Hadley (1703-c1760) and wife Patience Brown (1712-1783) were our common ancestors.  Lila descends from son Simon (1737-1803), while I descend from daughter Mary (1739-1810).

Exploratory Data Analysis: William Clifford LeMaster (1870-1922)

William Clifford LeMaster (1870-1922) was my paternal great-granduncle.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about him.

1. Vital Records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

          William was born September 1, 1870^{1, 12} in Darke County, Ohio. 

          The discovery of his correct birth date was the subject of a previous post.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

               Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of William's birth.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

               I am not aware of any surviving Bible records of the LeMaster family.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one does exist.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

               I am not aware of any baptismal record for William.  The family was affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal church.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

               There is no indication that William was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

          William married Lella Edith Lewis on August 20, 1892 in Penn Township, Jay County, Indiana^1,2.

          A copy of their marriage license and return was the subject of a previous post.

          William married secondly to Parnell Brown on July 21, 1921 in Denver, Denver County, Colorado.

          1.2.1. Marriage notice in newspaper

               Will need to search contemporary newspapers to see if mention was made of his nuptials.

          1.2.2. Anniversary notice

               Neither of his marriage's lasted long enough, due to divorce or death, to reach the 25th anniversary mark.

          1.2.3. Divorce decree

               William filed for divorce from Lella in Teller County, Colorado on August 21, 1917.  The papers were served to Lella on September 5, 1917 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California³.  

               A copy of their divorce papers was the subject of a previous post.

     1.3. Death Certificate

          William died July 26, 1922 in Sedalia, Douglas County, Colorado⁴.  I have not yet obtained a copy of his death certificate.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items.

          1.3.1. Obituary in newspaper

               William's obituary appeared in the July 28, 1922 edition of the Colorado Springs Gazette⁴.  Mention was also made in the July 29, 1922 edition of the Colorado Springs Gazette

          1.3.2. Funeral home records

               Neither obituary mentioned the funeral home that handled the arrangements.  The funeral was held at the Elks in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

          1.3.3. Tombstone photograph

               William's tombstone in the Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colorado⁶ has been photographed.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1920 Federal Census

               On January 12, 1920, William was enumerated in the Francis P. Hall household in Victor, Teller County, Colorado⁷, as William C. LeMaster, lodger, age 46, divorced.  He was born in Ohio, father born in Ohio and mother born in New Jersey.  He could read and write and spoke English.  His occupation was listed as the proprietor of a theatre.  Living in the same household was son, Ralph M., age 17, born in Ohio, and express driver.

          2.1.2. 1910 Federal Census

               On April 16, 1910, William was enumerated as the head of household in Ft. Collins, Larimer County, Colorado⁸, as William C. LeMaster, age 39, bank cashier.  He had been married for 17 years.  He was born in Ohio, father born in Ohio and mother in New Jersey.  He could read and write and spoke English.  Living in the household was his wife, Lella E., age 38, born in Indiana, and children Gladys A., age 16, born Indiana; Lella L., age 13, born in Ohio; Ralph M., age 7, born in Ohio, and William C. Jr., age 5, born in Colorado.

          2.1.3. 1900 Federal Census

               On June 4, 1900, William was enumerated as the head of household in Ward 4, City of Elyria, Lorain County, Ohio⁹, as William C. LeMaster, age 29, bank clerk.  He had been married for 7 years.  He was born September 1870 in Ohio, his father was born in Ohio and his mother in New Jersey.  He could read and write and spoke English.  Living in the household was his wife, Lella E., age 24, born in Indiana, and children Gladys A., age 6, born in Indiana and Lilla S., age 3, born in Ohio.

          2.1.4. 1880 Federal Census

               On June 5, 1880, William was enumerated in the Walker Lemasters household in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana¹⁰, as William Lemasters, age 9, son.  He had attended school within the year and could read and write and spoke English.

     2.2. State Census Records

          The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913 and 1921.  These, however, were merely for the purposes of legislative apportionment.

          No state census of Ohio are known to exist.

         Colorado conducted state census in 1861, 1866, and 1885.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

          I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what light they might shed on the LeMaster farm.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

          William was too old to meet the draft requirements during World War I.

     3.2. Pension Records

          I am not aware of any military service that would make William eligible for pension benefits.  His father did serve in the Civil War, but I don't believe he was ever eligible for any minor benefits.

     3.3. Service Records

          Not applicable.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

          Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Lorain County, Ohio and Teller and Douglas County, Colorado to see what records might mention William and his family.  Will add this to my "to-do" list for further research.

     4.2. Plat map / county map

          Plat maps and county maps for Lorain County, Ohio and Teller and Douglas Counties, Colorado will need to be searched.  Will contact the local historical societies to see what maps they might have in their collections.

5. Supplemental records

     Supplemental records available for research on William include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

     In January 1892, William graduated from Oberlin College in Ohio¹.

     On April 4, 1900, William was elected fourth ward councilman for the city of Elyria, Ohio¹¹.

1669 - Joseph CHEW married Margaret MILES.  Joseph was the son of John CHEW and Sarah GALE.

1680 - Mary CLARKE born in Westerly, Rhode Island.  Mary was the daughter of Joseph CLARKE and Bethiah HUBBARD.

1682 - John HUTCHINSON married Hannah ROOT in Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.  John was the son of Ralph HUTCHINSON and Alice _______.

1685 - Mercer BROWN born.  Mercer was the daughter of William BROWN and Ann MERCER.

1712 - Avis MAXSON born in Westerly, Rhode Island.  Avis was the daughter of John MAXSON and Judith CLARKE.

1732 - James TAYLOR born.  James was the son of James TAYLOR and Alice THORNTON.

1747 - John BEESON died in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  John was the son of Richard BEESON and Charity GRUBB.

1754 - Carey BURDICK married Dorcas COTTRELL.  Carey was the son of Thomas BURDICK and Dorothy MAXSON.

1755 - John MOULTON born in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. John was the son of Samuel MOULTON and Phoebe ________.  John was my 5x-great grandfather.

1798 - Hannah RAINS born.  Hannah was the daughter of Anthony RAINS and Nancy GRAHAM.

1806 - William MAXSON born. William was the son of Jonathan MAXSON and Mary MAGDILINE.

1827 - Sarah Jane HEATON born in Brown County, Ohio.  Sarah was the daughter of Alexander S. HEATON and Jemima SHAW.

1833 - Rachel FAULKNER born.  Rachel was the daughter of Solomon FAULKNER and Ruth BEALS.

1842 - Elizabeth PITTS died.  Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel STANLEY and Sarah WILLIAMS.

1862 - Catherine E. CUNNINGHAM born.  Catherine was the daughter of William E. CUNNINGHAM and Rachel LeMASTERS.

1863 - Charity MILLS died.  Charity was the daughter of Henry MILLS and Hannah WOODWARD.

1886 - Jemima HUDDLESTON died in Jackson Township, Champaign County, Ohio.  Jemima was the daughter of Michael SILLS and Rosana FETTERS.

1886 - George SWAFFORD married Nancy Kathleen THACKER in Ray County, Missouri.  George was the son of James SWAFFORD and Rebecca Ann BALLARD.

1891 - Jarah Albert STOUT married Ida May SHEARS in Palestine, Crawford County, Illinois.  Jarah was the son of Moses B. STOUT and Nancy PARKER.

1892 - Earl KING born.  Earl was the son of James Alfred KING and Ella May LOWERY.

1893 - Edna DAVIS born. Edna was the daughter of Joseph Newton DAVIS and Almeda DAVIS.

1939 - Jewell FIELDS died in Richmond, Missouri.  Jewell was the son of Thomas Henry FIELDS and Dessie May LEE.

1852 - George BROWN died in Goderich, Huron County, Ontario, Canada.  George was the son of Alexander BROWN and Elizabeth WRIGHT.

1856 - Johannah WARE died. Johannah was the daughter of James GROENENDYKE and Barbara BUCK.

1886 - John R. SWAFFORD born in Tennessee.  John was the son of George W. SWAFFORD and Elizabeth HAMILTON.

1889 - Mary Ellen ALDERMAN born in Greenville, Bond County, Illinois.  Mary was the daughter of James William ALDERMAN and Vashti KIMBRO.

1907 - John B. SWAFFORD died in Rayville, Missouri.  John was the son of Aaron SWAFFORD.

1917 - John T. BEALS died in Sheridan, Hamilton County, Indiana.  John was the son of Nathan C. BEALS and Elizabeth CHEW.  John was my 4x-great grandfather.

1940 - William F. HALEY died in Marion, Marion County, Ohio.  William was the son of William W. HALEY and Jane Elizabeth OWEN.
