Exploratory Data Analysis : David Sherrick (1823-1914)

David Sherrick (1823-1914) was my paternal 3rd-great grandfather.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about him.


1. Vital Records

     David was born October 18th or 19th, 1823 in York County, Pennsylvania1,2.  His death certificate states the 19th, biographical sketch states the 18th.

     1.1. Birth Certificate

          I have not located a birth record for David yet.  Will continue to search sources such as FamilySearch in hopes of locating a church record.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

               If David's birth was mentioned in a newspaper, I'm not aware of it.  Will search contemporary newspapers of the time period to see if any mention was made.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

               I'm not aware of any surviving Bible records of the Sherrick family that mentions David.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one can be located.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

                I am not aware of any baptismal record for David, nor am I aware of the church affiliation at this time.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

               There is no indication that David was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

          David married Susan Jacobs on March 23, 1843 in Wayne County, Ohio3.  His surname was spelled Sherich in the record.

          David married Amy Byers sometime between 1864 (Susan's death) and 1870 (census), likely in Medina County, Ohio.  I have not been successful in locating the record yet.  Will continue to search in hopes of locating.

          David married Margaret Zimmerman on April 29 1884 in Seneca County, Ohio4.  Margaret was the widow of Anthony David Rosenberger and the daughter of Barney Zimmerman.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

               I've not yet searched available newspapers of the time period to see if mention was made of David's three marriages.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

               I've not yet searched available newspapers of the time to see if mention was made of any anniversary celebrations.  David's marriage to Margaret was the only one that made it to the 25th wedding anniversary mark.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

               Although there was no indication that David was ever divorced, a thorough search of local court records would need to be made to be sure.

     1.3. Death Certificate

          David died September 30, 1914 in Ashland, Ashland County, Ohio5,6, following a fracture of the femur.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

               David's obituary appeared in the October 7, 1914 edition of the Ashland Ohio Press6.

               I need to make this the subject of a future blog post.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

               I will need to search the local historical society records to see if they have any mention of funeral home records that might have handled David's arrangements.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

               David's tombstone in the Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Ohio7, has been photographed.   A link to his memorial page at FindAGrave is located here.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1910 Federal Census

               On April 18, 1910, David was enumerated as head of household in Pleasant Township, Seneca County, Ohio8, as David Sherrick, age 86, born in Pennsylvania.  No occupation was listed.  He could speak English, read and write.  He owned his home free of mortgage.  He had been married for 25 years.  He was born in Pennsylvania, as were both his mother and father.

          2.1.2. 1900 Federal Census

               On June 18, 1900, David was enumerated as head of household in Pleasant Township, Seneca County, Ohio9, as David Sherick, age 76, born October 1823 in Pennsylvania.  His occupation was listed as minister.  He could read and write and spoke English.  He owned his own home.  Both of his parents were born in Pennsylvania.

          2.1.3. 1880 Federal Census

               On June 18, 1880, David was enumerated as head of household in Ashland, Ashland County, Ohio10, as David Sherrick, age 56, born in Pennsylvania.  His occupation was listed as a preacher.  Both his mother and father were born in Pennsylvania.

          2.1.4. 1870 Federal Census

               On June 7, 1870, David was enumerated as head of household in Harrisville Township, Medina County, Ohio11, as David Sherrick, age 47, no occupation listed.  The value of his real estate was $5080 and the value of his personal estate was $1100.  He was born in Pennsylvania and was a U.S. citizen.

          2.1.5. 1860 Federal Census

               On August 2, 1860, David was enumerated as head of household in Vermillion Township, Ashland Cuonty, Ohio12, as David Sharack, age 36, Farmer, born in Pennsylvania.  The value of his real estate was $3500 and the value of his personal estate was $9500.

          2.1.6  1850 Federal Census

               On September 19, 1850, David was enumerated as head of household in Vermillion Township, Ashland County, Ohio13, as David Scherick, age 26, Farmer, born in Pennsylvania.  The value of his real estate was $1700.

     2.2. State Census Records

          No state census records for the State of Ohio are known to exist.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

          I have not yet examined these types of records to see what light they might shed on the Sherrick family.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

          I have not yet located any military draft records for David.  Will need to continue to search, as he should be listed in Civil War draft records.

     3.2. Pension Records

          I am not aware of any military service by David that would make him eligible for a military pension.

     3.3. Service Records

          I am not aware of any military service by David.  It is possible that he served during the Civil War era.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

          Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Wayne, Medina, Seneca and Ashland Counties, Ohio to see what records might mention David.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

     4.2. Plat map / county map

          Plat maps of Wayne, Medina, Seneca and Ashland Counties, Ohio need to be searched to see what information can be gleaned that will be relevant to my search.

5. Supplemental Records

     Supplemental records to search for Susan include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

Exploratory Data Analysis : Susan (Jacobs) Sherrick (1825-1864)

Susan (Jacobs) Sherrick (1825-1864) was my paternal 3rd-great grandmother.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about her.


1. Vital Records

          Susan was born August 18, 1825 in either Wayne County, Ohio1, or Pennsylvania2, depending on the source.  More likely her birthplace was Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

     1.1. Birth Certificate

          I have not yet located a birth record for Susan.  Will continue to search sources such as FamilySearch in hopes of locating.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

               If Susan's birth was mentioned in a newspaper, I'm not aware of it.  Once I've determined the exact location, will be able to continue my search to see if it was mentioned.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

               I am not aware of any surviving Bible records of the Jacobs family that mentions Susan.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one can be located.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

                I am not aware of any baptismal record for Susan, nor am I aware of the church affiliation of the family at this time.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

               There is no indication that Susan was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

          Susan married David Sherrick on March 23, 1843 in Wayne County, Ohio3.  David's surname was spelled Sherich in the record, as the surname has evolved through several records.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

               I've not yet searched available newspapers of the time period to see if mention was made of Susan and David's nuptials.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

               I've not yet searched available newspapers of the time period to see if mention was made of any anniversary celebrations.  Susan would have passed away before their 25th wedding anniversary.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

               Although there is no indication that they were ever divorced, a complete search of local court records would need to be made to be sure.

     1.3. Death Certificate

          Susan died February 24, 1864 in Ashland County, Ohio1.  Her tombstone cites the death date as February 23rd.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

               I have not yet located an obituary mention for Susan.  Will need to continue to search in available newspapers to see if mention was made.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

               I will need to search the local historical society records to see if they have any mention of a funeral home that might have handled Susan's arrangements.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

               Susan's tombstone in the Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Ohio has been photographed4.  Her name on the tombstone is Susanna, and the date of death is listed as February 23rd.  She shares a marker with David's second wife, Amy, as well.

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1860 Federal Census

               On August 2, 1860, Susan was enumerated in the David Sharack hosuehold in Vermillion Township, Ashland County, Ohio5, as Susannah Sharack, age 30, female, born in Pennsylvania.

          2.1.2. 1850 Federal Census

               On September 19, 1850, Susan was enumerated in the David Scherick household in Vermillion Township, Ashland County, Ohio2, as Susan Scherick, age 23, female, born in Pennsylvania.

     2.2. State Census Records

          No state census records for the State of Ohio are known to exist.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records
