Surname Saturday: YOUNG

The YOUNG family is my paternal line. The origins of this surname are Germanic, so the original spelling was more likely JUNG.


Stories and History:


Ahnentafel # 33: Nancy Young (1812-1904). Nancy was born June 2, 1812 in Pickaway County, Ohio. She married January 19, 1832 in Shelby County, Ohio to Rev. Luman Walker Lemasters Sr. (1808-1888). Luman was born March 11, 1808 in Mason County, Virginia. Luman was an Methodist Episcopal minister and farmer. They moved from Shelby County, Ohio to Jay County, Indiana in 1854, settling in Madison Township.  They raised 11 children. Luman died April 15, 1888 in Jay County, Indiana.  Nancy died August 26, 1904 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.  Both are buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.


Ahnentafel # 66: Phillip Young (1787-1850). Phillip was born October 11, 1787 in Berkeley County, Virginia.  He married circa 1806 to Nancy Ann McLane (c1790-1825). Nancy was born circa 1790 in Martinsburg, Berkeley County, Virginia. Nancy died May 1825, probably in Pickaway County, Ohio.  Phillip married secondly July 30, 1826 in Pickaway County, Ohio to Keziah Curtis (1808-1891). Keziah was born April 11, 1808 in Pickaway County, Ohio.  Phillip was a farmer and War of 1812 veteran.  Phillip and Nancy had 11 children, and Phillip and Keziah had 10 children. Keziah died February 16, 1891 in Shelby County, Ohio.  Phillip died May 29, 1850 in Shelby County, Ohio.  Both are buried in the Wesley Chapel Cemetery, Shelby County, Ohio.


Ahnentafel # 122: Charles Young (1757-1848).  Charles was born in April 1757 in Germany, near the border with Holland.  He served in the Revolutionary War in General Sullivan's division, and is recognized as a D.A.R. patriot.  He married before 1787, probably Berkeley County, Virginia to Catherine Elizabeth Kint (1768-1841).  Catherine was born July 29, 1768 in Germany.  Charles and Elizabeth had 10 children.  Sometime after 1812, Charles left his wife and fathered a daughter by a housekeeper.  Charles died in 1848 in Berkeley County, Virginia.  After the war of 1812, Catherine and several of her children moved to Shelby County, Ohio.  Catherine died April 17, 1841 in Auglaize County, Ohio.  She is buried in the Presser Cemetery, St. John's, Ohio.

Family Milestones: February 14th

My paternal grandaunt, Vera Delphene HALEY, was married on this date in 1915 to Clarence Leroy STUBER.  Vera was the daughter of Eli Weldon and Cora Belle (METZNER) HALEY, and the older sister of my Ruth Pauline HALEY.  Vera was born March 10, 1890 in Jay County, Indiana.  Clarence was born February 4, 1891 in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana, the son of Henry and Martha (________) STUBER.  They had 1 stillborn child.  They lived in Spencerville, Allen County, Ohio and Jay County, Indiana.  Clarence was a farmer.  Clarence died May 20, 1981 in Jay County, Indiana.  Vera died June 1987 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.  Both are buried at the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana.

My maternal 3rd-great granduncle, Henry Eldred PIERCE, was married on this date in 1855 to Simeathy SMELSOR.  Henry was the son of Francis S. and Rebecca (PAGE) PIERCE, and the older brother of my Edmund G. PIERCE.  Henry was born October 10, 1833 in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio.  Simeathy was born circa 1839 in Indiana.  They had at least 6 children and lived in Lafayette Township, Madison County, Indiana.  Simeathy died in 1918.  Henry died in 1901.  Both are buried in the Maplewood Cemetery, Anderson, Madison County, Indiana.

My maternal 4th-great grandaunt, Elizabeth WARDLAW, was married on this date in 1838 in Brown County, Ohio.  Elizabeth was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (NESBIT) WARDLAW, and the younger sister of my Anna WARDLOW.  Elizabeth was born November 27, 1818 in Brown County, Ohio.  I do not know the dates of birth or death for John.  Elizabeth died in Iowa.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My maternal 2nd-great granduncle, Elias A. PIERCE, was born on this date in 1867 in Madison County, Indiana.  Elias was the son of Edmund G. and Catherine (GROENENDYKE) PIERCE, and the younger brother of my William Francis PIERCE.  Elias married December 25, 1895 in Madison County, Indiana to Flora J. CURTIS.  Flora was born November 1871 in Indiana and died between 1920-1930 in Madison County, Indiana.  Elias married secondly to Kate ________.  Elias was a farmer and stock buyer, living in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana.  Elias died March 1963.

My maternal 6th-great granduncle, Joshua MILLS, was born on this date in 1761.  Joshua was the son of Henry and Hannah (THORNBURG) MILLS.  Joshua's death is recorded at New Garden MM, Guilford County, North Carolina in 1762, 8th month.

Family Milestones: December 25th

My maternal 4th-great grandaunt, Elizabeth Jane JACOBS, was married on this date in 1845 in Ohio to Abraham Duncan ELLIS.  Elizabeth was the daughter of James Thomas and Isabella (FEILY) JACOBS, and the younger sister of my Elizabeth JACOBS.  Elizabeth Jane was born August 13, 1824 in Ripley, Ohio.  I do not know the birth and death dates of Abraham.  Elizabeth died April 29, 1919 in Brown County, Ohio.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal great-grandaunt, Orilla Catherine WEHRLY, was married on this date in 1893 to Arthur B. ANDREWS.  Orilla was the daughter of William P. and Olive Jane (SMITH) WEHRLY, and the younger sister of my Barbara Isabel WEHRLY.  Orilla was born April 6, 1872 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.  I do not know the birth and death dates of Arthur.  Orilla died December 26, 1970.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My matneral 2nd-great granduncle, Edward E. WRIGHT, was married on this datein 1899 in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana to Martha Jane STARR.  Edward was the son of Joseph W. and Rebecca (HEATON) WRIGHT, and the younger brother of my John William WRIGHT.  Edward was born April 18, 1875 in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana.  Martha was born May 24, 1878 in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana, the daughter of Mark and Mary (CHITWOOD) STARR.  They had 3 children.  Martha died March 29, 1948 in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana.  Edward died June 7, 1960 in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana.

My maternal 2nd-great granduncle, Elias A. PIERCE, was married on this date in 1895 in Madison County, Indiana to Flora J. CURTIS.  Elias was the son of Edmund G. and Catherine (GROENENDYKE) PIERCE, and the younger brother of my William Francis PIERCE.  Elias was born February 14, 1867 in Madison County, Indiana.  Flora was born November 1871 in Indiana.  Flora died between 1920 and 1930.  Elias died March 1963.

My paternal 6th-great grandparents (and 7th-great!), Samuel WOOLSTON and Cyllania WOOLSTON, were married on this date in 1749 at St. Mary's Church, Mt. Holly, Burlington County, New Jersey.  Samuel was the son of Samuel and Susanna (BUDD) WOOLSTON.  CYllania was the daughter of John and Sarah (POWELL) WOOLSTON.  They were 1st cousins.  Samuel was born April 18, 1719 in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Cyllania was born December 13, 1728.  They had 5 children.  Samuel died August 4, 1773.  Cyllania died December 30, 1772 in Burlington County, New Jersey.

My maternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Mary S. LAMBERTSON, was born on this date in 1840 in Franklin County, Indiana.  Mary was the daughter of John and Sarah A. (WILLSON) LAMBERTSON, and the older sister of my Carey W. LAMBERTSON.  Mary married November 28, 1863 in Butler County, Ohio to Samuel SNIVELY.  They lived in Butler County, Ohio and Madison County, Indiana.  I do not have the death dates of either Mary or Samuel.  Nothing further known at this time.

Elias A. Pierce household - Madison Co., IN

The Elias PIERCE household appears in the 1900-1930 census of Madison Co., IN in Lafayette & Monroe Twps. Elias was my maternal 2nd-great granduncle, the son of Edmund G. and Catherine (GROENENDYKE) PIERCE.

In the 1900 census of Richland Twp., Elias is a 32 year old farmer, born in Indiana who can read and write. He had been married for 4 years. His wife, Flora, aged 28, was also born in Indiana and had no children. They owned their home free of mortgage.

In the 1910 census of Monroe Twp., Elias was a 43 year old stock buyer, born in Indiana with both parents born in Indiana. Wife Flora was listed as 38 years old, and there were no children in the family.

In the 1920 census of Monroe Twp., Elias aged 52 years old with no occupation. Wife Flora was listed as aged 47 years old.

In the 1930 census of Monroe Twp., Elias was a 63 year old farmer, with real estate valued at $8000. His second wife, Kate, was aged 37 years old, born in Indiana, with her father born in Pennsylvania and mother born in Germany.

Edmund Pierce household - Madison Co., IN

The E.G. PIERCE household appears in the 1870 census of Lafayette Twp., Madison Co., IN. Edmund G. PIERCE was my maternal 3rd-great grandfather, the son of Francis S. and Rebecca (PAGE) PIERCE.

In the 1870 census, E.G. is listed as a 33 year-old farmer, born in Indiana, with real estate valued at $3200 and a personal estate valued at $750. His wife, Catherine, was aged 27, born in Indiana, and cannot read. Children listed were a son, W.F., aged 4; son E.A., aged 3; and daughter, Martha, aged 1 year.

Pierce, son of Francis S. and Rebecca (Page) Pierce. Edmund was born April 30, 1837 in Wayne Co., IN, and died January 8, 1875 in Madison Co., IN. Catherine died December 10, 1913 in Lafayette Twp., Madison Co., IN.

Phillip was born October 11, 1787 in Berkeley Co., VA (now WVA), the son of Charles and Catherine Elizabeth (Kint) Young. Phillip married ca. 1806 to Nancy Ann McLane, daughter of Jacob McLane. Nancy was born ca. 1790 Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., VA (now WVA) and died May 1825. Phillip married secondly on July 30, 1826 in Pickaway Co., OH to Keziah Curtis. Keziah was born April 11, 1808 in Pickaway Co., OH and died February 16, 1891 in Shelby Co., OH. Phillip died May 29, 1850 in Shelby Co., OH.

Phillip was a veteran of the War of 1812 and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
