Claude Pefley household, 1940, Parke County, Indiana

Located the 1940 census record of the Claude Pefley household in Parke County, Indiana.  On the enumeration his first name was spelled without a final 'e'.  Claude was Eileen's maternal 4th cousin twice removed - their common ancestors were Jacob Pefley (c1724-c1778) and wife Esther (c1724-   ).

1940 U.S. Census, Parke County, Indiana, population schedule, Florida Township, enumeration district (ED) 61-5, SD 6, sheet 4B, household 83, ; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 17 December 2016); National Archives, Washington, D.C..
At the time of the enumeration, Claude and his wife were living in Florida Township, Parke County, Indiana.  He was renting his home for the sum of $10 per month, and didn't live on a farm.  Claude was 48 years old and was born in Indiana.  His wife, Gladys, was 47 years old and born in Indiana.

The record showed that both had completed the 8th grade in school and that Claude's occupation was that of a farmer.

Also living in the household was their daughter, Milbrey, aged 18, born in Indiana who had completed 4 years of high school.  No occupation was listed.

In my database, Claude was the son of Daniel Voorhis Pefley and Lydia Delilah Charlotte Combs.  Gladys was the daughter of Silas Adams and Nancy Hawkins.

If you have any additional information or are connected to this family, I'd love to hear from you.

Albert Adams household, 1940, St. Joseph County, Indiana

Located the 1940 census record of the Albert Adams household in St. Joseph County, Indiana.  Albert was not a blood relative, but was the step-son of my paternal 3rd-great grandfather, Ezekiel Cooper Chew (1822-1888) and his wife Mary Jane Riddle (1845-1921).  Albert's father was Jonathan Adams (1849-1883).

1940 U.S. Census, St. Joseph County, Indiana, population schedule, North Liberty, enumeration district (ED) 71-10, SD 3, sheet 5B, household 95, ; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 17 December 2016); National Archives, Washington, D.C..
At the time of the enumeration, Albert and his wife were living in North Liberty, St. Joseph County, Indiana.  He owned his home and the value was $3500.  Albert was 58 years old and born in Ohio.  His wife Mable was 55 years old and born in Indiana.  Their residence in 1935 was the same place.

The record shows that both had completed the 5th grade in education.  Albert was a Contractor, working in Building Construction.

Also living in the household was John C. Chew, listed as Albert's nephew.  John was aged 25, married and had completed 4 years of high school.  He was working as a Carpenter in Building Construction - likely with Albert.

John was my paternal 1st cousin 3 times removed, the son of Wiley Riddle Chew and Dora Belle Lamb.  Our common ancestor was Dr. Ezekiel Cooper Chew.  John was a nephew to Albert Adams by way of John's father Wiley being a half brother to Albert.

If you have additional information or are related to this family, I'd love to hear from you.

Shaky Leaves : Albert F. Adams household, 1930 census Monroe County, Indiana

Albert F. Adams was the husband of my maternal first cousin three times removed, Gladys Marie Gilliland.   Through Ancestry.com hints, I was able to locate their family in the 1930 census of Washington Township, Monroe County, Indiana.

1930 U.S. Census, Monroe County, Indiana, population schedule, Washington Township, enumeration district (ED) 53-25, SD 10, sheet 5A, dwelling 93, family 93, ; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 19 December 2015); National Archives, Washington, D.C..
At the time of the census, Albert owned his own home, valued at $2000, owned a radio, and had been married for 6 years.  His age was listed as 30, and he was born in Indiana, as were both of his parents.  He worked as a laborer in a stone mill.

Wife Gladys was 29 years old, born in Indiana, as were her parents.  She did not have an occupation listed.  Children in the household were Wilma, aged 4 1/12, and Albert E., aged 2 4/12, both born in Indiana.  Albert was also mentioned as a "Junior", but his middle name was Eugene, while his father's was Fritch.

I had already located the family in the 1940 census in the same location.  Their son, Lloyd, was the one who provided me with many photographs of the Ida Davis and Gilliland families.

Gladys was the daughter of William Everett and Maude Nell (Arthur) Gilliland.

If you are related in any way to this family, I would like to hear from you.

Census Sunday : Albert F. Adams household, 1940, Monroe County, Indiana

My maternal 1st cousin 3 times removed, Gladys Marie (Gilliland) Adams, was enumerated in the 1940 census of Washington Township, Monroe County, Indiana in her husband, Albert's household.

1940 U.S. census, Monroe County, Indiana, population schedule, Washington Township, enumeration district (ED) 53-52, SD 7, sheet 8B, dwelling 164, ; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 26 July 2015); National Archives, Washington, D.C..
The family consisted of Albert F., age 40, Gladys M., age 31, and children Wilma, age 14, Eugene, age 12, Colleen, age 8, and Loyd, age 6.  All were born in Indiana.  Albert's occupation was listed as a grader of roads.  Perhaps he worked for the local highway department.  All of the children had attended school within the year and their residence in 1935 was the same location.  Gladys had completed one year of high school, while Albert had completed the 8th grade.

Prior to this find, I didn't have the names of the children in the family, other than Lloyd.  Lloyd and I have corresponded, and he supplied me with many fantastic family photos of my Gilliland relatives.

Gladys was the daughter of William Everett Gilliland and Maude Arthur.  Our common ancestor is Mary Ellen Swafford,

Exploratory Data Analysis : Ezekiel Cooper Chew (1822-1888)

Ezekiel Cooper Chew (1822-1888) was my paternal 3rd-great grandfather.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about him.

1. Vital Records

Ezekiel was born January 17, 1822 in Gloucester County, New Jersey1. The Abel Chew family Bible listed his birth year as 18232.

     1.1. Birth Certificate

The State of New Jersey did not require birth certificates at the time of his birth.  The State Archives has birth records from 1848.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If Ezekiel's birth was recorded in a local newspaper, it has been lost to time.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

The family Bible record of his son, Abel, was transcribed in a message board2

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

Ezekiel married December 29, 1842 in New Jersey1 (probably Gloucester Co.) to Caroline Bishop Woolston.  Caroline was born February 6, 1826 in Vincentown, Burlington County, New Jersey.  They had 14 children in New Jersey and Ohio.  Caroline died February 27, 1879 in Rossburg, Darke County, Ohio.

Ezekiel married secondly December 23, 1880 in Darke County, Ohio3 to Laura V. (Skeggs) Hubler. They had two children.  Laura was born circa 1853 in Maryland and died in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.

Ezekiel married thirdly between 1883 and 1888 to Mary Jane (Riddle) Adams Keiser, probably in St. Joseph County, Indiana.  Mary was born December 28, 1845 in St. Joseph County, Indiana.  They had one child.  Mary died in 1921.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

Ezekiel and Caroline's 25th wedding anniversary would have been December 29, 1867.  Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if there was any mention of anniversary celebrations.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

There is no indication that Ezekiel was ever divorced.  He was twice widowed.

     1.3. Death Certificate

Ezekiel died August 27, 1888 in St. Joseph County, Indiana4.  I do not yet have a copy of his death certificate.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Ezekiel's death was mentioned in the September 1, 1888 edition of the South Bend, Indiana Weekly Tribune4.  I will need to search newspaper accounts other mentions of his death.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Will need to search the local historical society to see if they have copies of the funeral home records to see if I can learn anything more about the arrangements for Ezekiel's funeral.  Will add this to my "to-do" list.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Ezekiel's tombstone in the Lakeville Cemetery, St. Joseph County, Indiana has been photographed.  A link to his memorial page at FindAGrave website is located here.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1880 Federal Census

On June 12, 1880, Ezekiel was enumerated in the Frederic Whitacre household in Mississinewa Township, Darke County, Ohio5, as E.C. Chew, age 57, boarder.  His occupation was listed as physician.  He was born in New Jersey, and both of his parents were born in New Jersey.

          2.1.2. 1870 Federal Census

On July 8, 1870, Ezekiel was enumerated as head of household in New Madison, Twin Township, Darke County, Ohio6, as Ezekiel Chew, age 47, born in New Jersey.  His occupation was listed as physician.  The value of his real estate was $1200 and the value of his personal estate was $800.  He was a U.S. citizen.

          2.1.3. 1860 Federal Census

On August 2, 1860, Ezekiel was enumerated as head of housheold in Neave Township, Darke County, Ohio7, as Zechel Chew, age 65, born in New Jersey.  His occupation was listed as doctor.  The value of his personal estate was $100.

          2.1.4. 1850 Federal Census

On September 2, 1850, Ezekiel was enumerated as head of household in Jackson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio8, as Ezekiel Chew, age 27, born in New Jersey.  His occupation was listed as doctor.  The value of his personal estate was illegible.

          2.1.5. 1840 Federal Census

Ezekiel is likely the white male, aged 15-19 in the household of Nathaniel Chew in Haddonfield, Newton Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey.   This household fits with what I know of his family. Note there are 3 Nathaniel Chews in the 1840 census of Gloucester, plus one Nathaniel W Chew and one Nathaniel C Chew.

          2.1.6. 1830 Federal Census

Ezekiel is likely the white male, aged 5-10 in the household of Nathaniel Chew Junior in Greenwich Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey.  There were two other Nathaniel Chews in Gloucester County in 1830, one was a Tanner and the other was Esquire, which was likely Ezekiel's grandfather.

     2.2. State Census Records

Ohio state census records are not known to exist.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what light they might shed on the Chew family.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

I have not located an records indicating military service for Ezekiel.

     3.2. Pension Records

          Not applicable.

     3.3. Service Records

          Not applicable.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Montgomery and Darke Counties, Ohio and Jay and St. Joseph Counties, Indiana to see what records might mention Ezekiel.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Plat maps in Darke County, Ohio and Jay County, Indiana need to searched to see what information might be relevant to my search for Ezekiel.

5. Supplemental Records

Supplemental records available for research on Ezekiel include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

On May 1863, Ezekiel was listed in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana as E.C. Chew, lawyer, class B, license $10.00 on the tax assessment list9.

On June 24, 1863, Ezekiel was listed in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana as E.C. Chew, lawyer, class B, license $10.00 on the tax assessment9.

On January 25, 1864, Ezekiel was listed in Lancaster, Madison County, Jay County, Indiana as E.C. Chew, physician, class B, license $10.00 on the tax assessment9.

--
The Daniel Chew who married Bertha Adams was actually Donovan R. Chew (1869-1933), son of Dr. Ezekiel Cooper and Caroline Bishop (Woolston) Chew. Donovan would be my paternal 2nd-great granduncle.

The Mr. Chew listed, was the obituary for Ezekiel Cooper Chew (1822-1888), my paternal 3rd-great grandfather.

The J. Parker Chew is unidentfied, though his presence in the county predates my immediate family by thirty years.

Update: Albert Leroy Adams WWI Draft Registration Card

A reader, Gwen Gelesko, contacted me with an update on my post on the World War I draft card for Albert Leroy Adams.  At the time of the post, I could not make out the name of his nearest living relative.  Gwen believes that the response is "Wife Mabel Adams"  The upsweep on the top part of the "f" as well as the downsweep is missing.   What do you think?  I think she is correct.  Thank you!

Albert Leroy Adams: World War I Draft Registration

Albert Leroy ADAMS was born February 13, 1882 in Mercer County, Ohio, the son of Jonathan and Mary Jane (RIDDLE) ADAMS.  Mary Jane (RIDDLE) ADAMS later became the 3rd wife of Dr. Ezekiel Cooper CHEW.  Albert was also the brother of Bertha ADAMS, who married Donavan R. CHEW, son of Dr. Ezekiel Cooper and Caroline (WOOLSTON) CHEW.  So even though he is not a blood relative, I have tried to keep track of him as part of the family picture.

Though hard to read, Albert was 36 years old at the time of this draft registration, a resident of North Liberty, St. Joseph County, Indiana.  His occupation was that of a self-employed contractor. I am not quite able to make out the name of his closest living relative.  Can you?

[Update: 3/4/12 - A reader contacted me and believes that the name of his nearest living relative is "Wife Mabel Adams".  Believe this is correct.]

The Solomon LEWIS family was enumerated in the 1860 & 1870 census of Jefferson Twp., Huntington Co., IN. Solomon was my wife 's maternal 3rd-great grandfather, the son of Nathaniel and Nancy Ann (SNIDER) LEWIS.

Solomon's occupation was that of a farmer, with a real estate valued at $4000 in 1860 and $8000 in 1870; as well as a personal estate valued at $800 in 1860 and $1380 in 1870. The 1870 census indicated that both Solomon and wife Margaret could not write, and Margaret could not read.

The 1860 census listed Margaret's birthplace as Indiana and the 1870 listed her birthplace as Ohio. Other sources state that she was born in Henry Co., IN.

By 1870, daughter's Christina and Isabella were married and listed with their own families.

Leander Lewis family - Huntington Co., IN

The Leander LEWIS family was enumerated in the 1900-1920 census of Jefferson Twp., Huntington Co., IN. Leander was Eileen's maternal 2nd-great granduncle, the son of Solomon and Margaret (RHINEHART) LEWIS.

Leander was a farmer who owned his own home in all three census records. He listed his father as being born in Indiana in the 1900 and 1910 census, but in 1920, his father was listed as being from Pennsylvania. Leander's wife, Emily, was recorded as Emma, and she listed herself as born in Ohio with both parents being from Ohio. Both Leander and Emma could read and write.

Only one child, Ernest, was listed in the 1900 census, as a farm laborer, born February 1888. Yet the 1900 census states that Emma was the mother of 2 children who were both living. I have not yet found the record of the other child. By the 1910 census, Ernest was not living with his parents.

Leander LEWIS b. December 25, 1855 Huntington Co., IN., d. April 6, 1929 Huntington Co., IN., m. November 18, 18777 Huntington Co., IN to Emily ADAMS. Emily b. April 23, 1861 Preble Co., OH., d. January 31, 1932 Huntington Co., IN.

Known children :
i. Ernest LEWIS b. February 1888 Indiana.

Pete Decker & Pansy (Gilliland) Decker

This photo of Pete & Pansy Decker came from cousin Lloyd Adams of Florida's collection. I do not know when or where it was taken.

Peter W. Decker was born March 13, 1890 and died in 1947. He was the son of William R. and Amanda (Rollins) Decker. He maried Pansy Gilliland on December 11, 1912 in Monroe Co., IN. Pansy was born December 11, 1894 and died January 26, 1968. She was the daughter of Ida Davis, raised by her grandmother and took the Gilliland surname.

June Kirk Davis / Gilliland

June Kirk Davis (aka June Gilliland) was born June 11, 1898 in Indianapolis, Marion Co., IN. Her birth certificate lists her parents as Atkinson and Ida Davis. Ida Davis, June's mother, was quite an interesting story, and I am still working to track down all of the details - but at the time, Ida was not married that I'm aware of, and I have found no evidence that anyone named Atkinson Davis existed.

June was raised by her maternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Mary Ellen (Swafford) and Robert Farrell Gilliland, after the death of her mother on August 2, 1900. After that, she was known as June Gilliland. Her marriage license in Monroe Co., IN listed her as June Gilliland when she married my great-grandfather, Clemon Beals Lambertson on June 28, 1917.

These photographs came from cousin Lloyd Adams of Florida, and what is striking to me is the close resemblance between my neice, Ally, and my great-grandmother's photograph above.

Ida Davis (1874-1900)

These photos came from cousin Lloyd Adams in Florida, and were part of his mother Marie's collection of family photographs.

Both of these purport to be photographs of Ida Davis, daughter of James Austin and Mary Ellen (Swafford) Davis.

Ida was born July 2, 1874 in Owen Co., IN and died August 2, 1900 in Owen Co., IN. She was married to Samuel G. Hancock on August 28, 1892 in Monroe Co., IN and later divorced. She married secondly to Carrie A. Morris on July 19, 1900 in Clay Twp., Owen Co., IN. Ida had two daughters, Pansy and June. June was my great-grandmother, and her parentage has been a subject of much mystery and debate in the family.

It is quite possible that these photographs are not of Ida, but actually her mother, Mary Ellen.
