Surname Saturday : Antonides

The ANTONIDES surname is in my maternal line.  The origins of the surname are Dutch.  There is much to learn about this line and its ties to early New Netherlands history.

Stories and history : 

Ahnentafel # 213 : Joannah Antonides (1778-1825).  Joannah was born August 28, 1778 in New Jersey.  She married James Groenendyke (1770-1836) on June 4, 1797.  James was born in 1770 in Middlesex County, New Jersey and died September 1836 in Fayette County, Indiana.  They were the parents of eight children.  They resided in Middlesex and Monmouth Counties, New Jersey before coming to Dearborn County, Indiana by 1815 and Fayette County, Indiana by 1818.  Joannah died in 1825 in Fayette County, Indiana.

Ahnentafel # 426 : Pieter Antonides (1726-1796).  Pieter was born July 31, 1726 in Marlboro, New Jersey.  He married Catherine Vanderveer (1732-1796) on November 10, 1750.  Catherine was born August 11, 1732 and died May 8, 1796.  They were the parents of eight children and lived in Kings County, New York.  Pieter died August 27, 1796.

Ahnentafel # 852 : Johannis Antonides (1683-   ).  Johannis was born March 28, 1683 in Franeker, Netherlands.  He married Annetje Couwenhoven (1690-  ) in 1724.  Annetje was born October 21, 1690.  They were the parents of at least two children.  The location of Annetje and Johannis' death is unknown.

Ahnentafel # 1704 : Vincentius Antonides (1666-1744).  Vincentius was born in 1666 in the Netherlands.  He married Anatie Van Couvenhaven.  Her date of birth and death are unknown.  Vincentius immigrated from Bergen, Friesland, Netherlands on January 1, 1705.  He was the pastor of Kings County Reformed Dutch Church.  The were the parents of at least three children.  Vincentius died in 1744.

1732 - Catherine VANDERVEER born.  Catherine was the daughter of Michael VANDERVEER and Belitja SNYDAM.  Catherine was my 6x-great grandmother.


1792 - Sally POTTER born.  Sally was the daughter of George POTTER and Mary STILLMAN.


1793 - Peter KIMMER born.  Peter was the son of Nicholas KIMMER and Sarah FAYLER.


1802 - Prudence HIATT married James STANLEY.  Prudence was the daughter of William HIATT and Charity WILLIAMS.


1813 - John HIGGINS born in Flemington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.  John was the son of Judiah HIGGINS and Mary QUICK.


1821 - Orlando P. COY born.  Orlando was the son of John COY and Almina PIERCE.


1826 - Elvira HUNT married William W. BOWMAN in Guilford County, North Carolina.  Elvira was the daughter of Isom HUNT and Margaret BUNDY.


1841 - Christina LEWIS born in Wayne County, Indiana.  Christina was the daughter of Solomon LEWIS and Margaret RINEHART.


1846 - John Jackson CUMMINGS born in Winston County, Alabama.  John was the son of Abner CUMMINGS and Mary WRIGHT.


1855 - Hannah MILLS married Isaac S. POE in Morgan County, Indiana.  Hannah was the daughter of Henry MILLS and Hannah WOODWARD.  Isaac was the son of John W. POE and Elizabeth RAINS.  They were my 4x-great grandparents.


1856 - Samuel PHILBRICK died.  Samuel was the son of John PHILBRICK and Sally JEWETT.


1859 - Francis W. POE born in Morgan County, Indiana.  Francis was the son of Isaac S. POE and Hannah MILLS.


1862 - Jacob SHIRK died in Cocalico Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.  Jacob was the son of Michael SHIRK and Barbara FLICKINGER.


1869 - Alonzo H. MORRISTON born.  Alonzo was the son of Alonzo T. MORRISTON and Rebecca A. WAMSLEY.


1874 - Lula Iona DAVIS born in Doddridge County, West Virginia.  Lula was the daughter of Stillman Coon DAVIS and Keziah DAVIS.


1879 - Isaiah DUFFEY died.  Isaiah was the son of Daniel DUFFEY and Susanna FREEZE.


1894 - Wilbur DUFFEY born. Wilbur was the son of Isaac Fremont DUFFEY and Della BENJAMIN.


1904 - Ruby Gladys SWAFFORD born in Ray County, Missouri.  Ruby was the daughter of John William SWAFFORD and Viola Mae MILLER.


1921 - Lillian PIERCE died in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana.  Lillian was the daughter of William Francis PIERCE and Clara PENISTEN.

1943 - Edna GAINES died.  Edna was the daughter of Reuben H. DAVIS and Sarah McCLOY.

Family Milestones: June 4th

My maternal 5th-great grandparents, James GROENENDYKE and Johannah ANTONIDES, were married on this date in 1797 in New Jersey.  James was the son of Nicholas GROENENDYKE.  Johannah was the daughter of Pieter and Catherine (VANDERVEER) ANTONIDES.  James was born in 1770 in Middlesex County, New Jersey.  Johannah was born August 28, 1778 in New Jersey.  They had 8 children.  Johannah died in 1825 in Fayette County, Indiana.  James died in September 1836 in Fayette County, Indiana.

My paternal 3rd-great grandfather, Johannes WEHRLY, was born on this date in 1802 in York County, Pennsylvania.  Johannes was the son of Heinrich and Christina (SAUBEL) WEHRLY.  Johannes married in 1821 in Stark County, Ohio to Barbara PETRY, daughter of George and Maria Catharina (KALTREIDER) PETRY.  Barbara was born May 28, 1802 in York County, Pennsylvania.  They had 9 children.  Barbara died August 27, 1880 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.  Johannes died November 10, 1876 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana. They are both buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.


My maternal 6th-great grandaunt, Neeltje GROENENDYKE, was born on this date in 1762 in Kingston, Middlesex County, New Jersey.  Neeltje was the daughter of Johannes and Sarah Ann (LAKE) GROENENDYKE, and the younger sister of my Nicholas GROENENDYKE.  Nothing further is known at this time.

Family Milestones: April 22nd

My maternal 3rd-great granduncle, Albert Orland PIERCE, married on this date in 1884 in Wayne County, Indiana to Sarah S. WILSON.  Albert was the son of Francis S. and Rebecca (PAGE) PIERCE, and the younger brother of my Edmund G. PIERCE.  Sarah's parentage is unknown.  Albert was born June 2, 1839 in Wayne County, Indiana.  Sarah was born May 1844 in Indiana.  Albert's 1st wife, Elizabeth Williams PIKE, passed away March 25, 1883 in Wayne County, Indiana.  Albert and Sarah lived in Clay Township, Wayne County, Indiana, where Albert was a farmer. Albert was a veteran of the Civil War, serving in Company D, 8th Regiment of Indiana Infantry.  Sarah died in 1928.  Albert died in 1920.  Both are buried in the Sugar Grove Cemetery, Wayne County, Indiana.

My paternal great-granduncle, Arthur Raymond LeMASTERS, married on this date in 1906 in Jay County, Indiana to Maude Gertrude McLAUGHLIN.  Arthur was the son of Luman Walker and Mary Keziah (CHEW) LeMASTERS Jr., and the younger brother of my Luman Cooper LeMASTERS.  Arthur was born December 28, 1885 in Jay County, Indiana.  Maude was born September 29, 1888.  I do not have her parentage.  They lived in Salamonia, Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana where Arthur was a farmer.  Maude died in 1967.  Arthur died December 16, 1971.  Both are buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.

My maternal 3rd-great granduncle, Cornelius KING, married on this date in 1862 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana to Indiana BURKHARDT.  Cornelius was the son of William and Sarah (SULLIVAN) KING, and the older brother of my Daniel KING.  I do not have Indiana's parentage.  Cornelius was born circa 1815 in Indiana.  Indiana was born March 24, 1836 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.  Cornelius' 1st wife, Mary Ann BARNETT, had passed away between 1860 and 1862.  Cornelius was a lumber dealer in Center Township, Marion County, Indiana.  He and Indiana had 3 children.  Indiana died August 11, 1920 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.  Cornelius died April 6, 1887 in Marion County, Indiana.  Both are buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.

My paternal 7th-great grandfather, Hans Heinrich CHERDRON, was married on this date in 1727 in Otterberg, Bayern to Anna Maria HERBACH.  Hans was the son of Abraham and Anne Margueritte (VIELLARD) CHERDRON.  Anna was the daughter of Johann Peter and Anna Maria (________) HERBACH.  Hans was born July 8, 1706 in Erlenbach, Bayern.  Anna was born July 5, 1705 in Otterberg, Bayern.  They immigrated to York County, Pennsylvania.  They had at least 1 child.  Anna died after 1772 in York County, Pennsylvania.  Hans died after 1771 in York County, Pennsylvania.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My maternal 5th-great grandaunt, Belinda ANTONIDES, was born on this date in 1770.  Belinda was the daughter of Pieter and Catherine (VANDERVEER) ANTONIDES, and the older sister of my Joannah ANTONIDES.  Belinda married Thomas HEGEMAN. Nothing further is known at this time.

My maternal 4th-great granduncle, Elijah CHEW, was born on this date in 1790 in Gloucester County, New Jersey.  Elijah was the son of Nathaniel and Sarah (SPRINGER) CHEW, and the younger brother of my Nathaniel CHEW.   Elijah married circa 1810 to Jane DRIVER.  Jane was born circa 1794.  Jane died after the 1860 census, when the family was living in Mantua Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey.  Elijah died November 4, 1872.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 2nd-great granduncle, John Stevens LEMASTERS, was born on this date in 1855 in Jay County, Indiana.  John was the son of Luman Walker and Nancy (YOUNG) LEMASTERS Sr. and the younger brother of my Luman Walker LEMASTERS Jr.  John married November 28, 1881 in Jay County, Indiana to Sarah I. WILSON.  Sarah was born September 1859 in Indiana, of unknown parentage.  They had 7 children and lived in St. Paul, Howard County, Nebraska.  Last known location for them was the 1920 census, where they were living in the 2nd ward of St. Paul, Howard County, Nebraska.

Family Milestones: February 15th

My maternal 4th-great grandaunt, Mary C. JACOBS, married on this date in 1849 in Ohio to Benjamin Franklin MARKLEY.  Mary was the daughter of James Thomas and Isabella (FEILY) JACOBS, and the younger sister of my Elizabeth JACOBS.  Mary was born October 28, 1831 in Brown County, Ohio.  I do not have birth and death dates for Benjamin.  Mary died March 15, 1898 in Brown County, Ohio.

My maternal 7th-great grandparents, Deacon John WRIGHT and Hannah FESSENDEN, were married on this date in 1753 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  John was born February 10, 1727 in Freuchie, Falkland Parish, Fife, Scotland, the son of Robert and Elizabeth (HENDERSON) WRIGHT.  Hannah was born August 15, 1732 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, the daughter of William and Martha (BROWN) FESSENDEN.  They had 5 children.  John died June 1772 off the coast of Anamaboo, New Guinea.  Hannah died December 9, 1800 in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.

My maternal 4th-great granduncle, Joseph HEATON, married on this date in 1821 to Mary Ann EVANS.  Joseph was the son of Thomas and Susan (TAYLOR) HEATON, and the older brother of my James R. HEATON.  Mary was the daughter of Abraham and Mary (________) EVANS.  Joseph was born January 11, 1795 in Loudon County, Virginia.  Mary was born August 22, 1800 in Viriginia.  They had 10 children.  Joseph died in 1865/66 in Brown County, Ohio.  Mary died September 28, 1870.

My maternal 5th-great granduncle, Peter ANTONIDES, was born on this date in 1765.  Peter was the son of Pieter and Catherine (VANDERVEER), and the older brother of my Johannah ANTONIDES.  Nothing further is known.

My maternal 5th-great grandaunt, Johanna ANTONIDES, was born on this date in 1756.  Johanna was the daughter of Pieter and Catherine (VANDERVEER) ANTONIDES, and the older sister of my Johannah ANTONIDES.  Johanna died young.

My maternal 5th-great granduncle, Joseph WRIGHT, was born on this date in 1798 in Kentucky.  Joseph was the son of John and Sarah (FLEMING) WRIGHT, and the younger brother of my George WRIGHT.  Joseph married September 27, 1818 in Brown County, Ohio to Clarissa GARDNER.  Clarissa was born circa 1800 in New York.  They had at least 1 child.  Clarissa died January 29, 1882 in Brown County, Ohio.  Joseph died December 13, 1856 in Brown County, Ohio.

Family Milestones: November 17th

My paternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Catherine JACOBS, married Josiah Jeremiah KANAGY, on this date in 1836 in Wayne County, Ohio. Catherine was the daughter of David and Barbara (BYERS) JACOBS, and the older sister of my Susan JACOBS. Catherine was born January 13, 1818 in Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania. She died March 19, 1892, according to unsourced data in my file.

My paternal 4th-great grandaunt, Piety MAXSON, married Jonathan DAVIS on this date in 1796. Piety was the daughter of Ephraim and Elisabeth (DAVIS) MAXSON, and the younger sister to my Jesse MAXSON. I do not know how Jonathan DAVIS is related to the other Davis family lines. Need to go back and locate my sources for this data and revise.

My maternal 5th-great granduncle, Cornelius ANTONIDES, was born on this date in 1763. Cornelius was the son of Pieter and Catherine (VANDERVEER) ANTONIDES, and the older brother of my Joannah ANTONIDES. Cornelius married Marie VAN SICKLEN and had at least 4 children. Cornelius died on August 8, 1832.

My paternal 6th-great granduncle, Abner PHILBRICK, married Mehitable STEWART on this date in 1731. Abner was the son of Thomas and Abigail (________) PHILBRICK, and the older brother of my John PHILBRICK. Abner was born January 21, 1708 in Hampton, Province of New Hampshire and died May 2, 1790. Mehitable was born in 1716 and died in 1770. I do not know who her parents were.

My maternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Ellen W. LAMBERTSON, married David L. MENGLE on this date in 1870 in Butler County, Ohio. Ellen was the daughter of John and Sarah A. (WILLSON) LAMBERTSON, and the younger sister of my Carey W. LAMBERTSON. Ellen was born June 21, 1850 in Ohio and died September 16, 1933 in Jackson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. David was born circa 1851 in Ohio, the son of George and Susan (RUMBARGER) MENGLE, and died July 4, 1938 in Jackson Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. Both are buried in the Holp Cemetery, Farmersville, Montgomery County, Ohio.

My maternal 6th-great grandfather, Pieter ANTONIDES, married Catherine VANDERVEER on this date in 1750. Pieter was the son of Johannis and Annetje (COUWENHOVEN) ANTONIDES. Pieter was born July 31, 1727 and died April 27, 1796 in Flatbush, Long Island. Catherine was the daughter of Michael and Belitja (SNYDAM) VANDERVEER. She was born August 11, 1732 and died May 8, 1796. My connection to these ANTONIDES needs further research, but for the moment I'm claiming them, through their daughter Joannah.

My maternal 7th-great grandfather, Seth PIERCE, married Elizabeth NYE on this date in 1743. Seth was the son of Samuel and Abigail (JOHNSON) PIERCE. Seth was born November 30, 1716 in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts and died December 5, 1794. Elizabeth was the daughter of Ebenezer and Sarah (NEWCOMB) NYE. Elizabeth was born December 14, 1720 and died May 14, 1749 in Mansfield, Windham County, Connecticut. I descend through their son, Seth.

My maternal 5th-great grandaunt, Elizabeth JACOBS, was born on this date in 1810 in Brown County, Ohio. Elizabeth was the daughter of William and Sibell (LITTELL) JACOBS and the younger sister of my James Thomas JACOBS. Elizabeth married John T. REEVES on October 1, 1829. Elizabeth died July 4, 1888 in Wabash County, Indiana.

My paternal 4th-great grandfather, Rev. Nathaniel CHEW, was born on this date in 1786 in Gloucester County, New Jersey. Nathaniel was the son of Nathaniel and Sarah (SPRINGER) CHEW. Nathaniel married Mary WEST, daughter of Job and Sarah (JACKSON) WEST, circa 1812 in Gloucester County, New Jersey. Mary died February 27, 1848 in New Jersey. Nathaniel lived in Darke County, Ohio and Iowa. Nathaniel died January 24, 1866 in Mahaska County, Iowa.

Family Milestones: November 8th

My maternal 5th-great grandaunt, Beleytie ANTONIDES, was born on this date in 1758, the daughter of Pieter and Catherine (VANDERVEER) ANTONIDES. Beleytie would be the older sister of my Joannah ANTONIDES. She was baptised at the Reformed Dutch Church at Flatbush, Long Island. Beleytie died young.

My paternal granduncle, Chesleigh Franklin LEMASTER, married Clara Louis BURKEY on this date in 1913 in Jay County, Indiana. Chesleigh was born May 25, 1890 in Jay County, Indiana, the son of Luman Cooper and Barbara Isabel (WEHRLY) LEMASTER. Clara was born December 16, 1894 in Jay County, Indiana, the daughter of John and Teresa (BEEBE) BURKEY. Chesleigh was a farmer and carpenter in Salamonia, Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana. Chesleigh died August 7, 1960 in Jay County, Indiana and Clara died October 30, 1985 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana. Both are buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana.

My maternal 4th-great granduncle, William Perry ALDERMAN, married Mary Ellen SAPP on this date in 1883 in Greenville, Bond County, Illinois. Mary was his second wife, his first wife, Elizabeth Ann (LEE) ALDERMAN, having died March 4, 1879 in Greenville, Bond County, Illinois. William Perry ALDERMAN was born circa 1815 in Illinois, the son of James and Martha (CANTRELL) ALDERMAN. William died January 31, 1901 in Greenville, Bond County, Illinois.

Joannah was born August 28, 1778 in New Jersey. She is believed to be the daughter of Pieter and Catherine (Vanderveer) Antonides. She married June 4, 1797 in New Jersey to James Groenendyke, son of Nicholas Groenendyke. James was born 1770 in Middlesex Co., NJ., and died September 1836 in Fayette Co., IN. Joannah died 1825 in Fayette Co., IN.

Today's featured relative in my database is my maternal 6th great-grandmother, Catherine Vanderveer.

Catherine was born August 11, 1732 , the daughter of Michael & Belitja (Snydam) Vanderveer. Catherine married Pieter Antonides on November 10, 1750. Pieter was born July 31, 1727 and died April 27, 1796 Flushing, NY. Catherine died May 10, 1796.

I descend from Pieter & Catherine's daugther Johanna as follows :
