Exploratory Data Analysis Through 2x-Great Grandaunts & Uncles

Though it took much longer that I had hoped, have finally finished by series of exploratory data analysis through my 2x-great grandaunts and granduncles.  Previously, I had written about my results through my 2x-great grandparents.  My next steps are to move on to my 3x-great grandparents as well as start work on some of Eileen's ancestors and Corinne's ancestors.

Working on this series has allowed me to find out where there are gaps in my research and has added much data.  Now I just need to follow up with my "to-do" lists before my next research trip to make sure I use my time effectively.

Here are the links to posts about the exploratory data analysis posts for my 2x-great grandaunts and granduncles:

Marriage Records of Nina (Haley) Hanlin Zorn (1869-1963), Jay County, Indiana

Working on filling in some gaps in my database by utilizing the "Indiana Marriages, 1811-1959" database at Familysearch.org to see what updates and corrections I could find.

Nina Haley (1869-1963) was the daughter of George Washington and Mary Jane (Sherick) Haley.  Her marriage to Thomas Benton Hanlin on July 11, 1888 in Jay County, Indiana was found in the database.  Prior to locating this record, I did not have the exact date of their wedding, nor the names of his parents, John S. Hanlin and Martha Wilson.

"Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1959," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V6RG-H6C : accessed 09 Sep 2013), Wm B Hanlin and Ninnia Haley, 1888.
Nina's second marriage, after Thomas' death, was June 15, 1901 in Jay County, Indiana to George Zorn.  A copy of their marriage certificate was also found in the database.

"Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1959," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V6R5-QLQ : accessed 09 Sep 2013), George Zorn and Nina Hanlin, 1901.

Nina was my paternal great-grandaunt.  An exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about her is found here.

Exploratory Data Analysis: Rachel Emma Pernina (Haley) Hanlin Zorn (1869- 1963 )

Rachel Emma Pernina (Haley) Hanlin Zorn (1869-1963) was my paternal great-grandaunt.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about her.

1. Vital Records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

Nina was born November 21, 1869 in Medina County, Ohio1.  The State of Ohio did not require the keeping of birth records until 1867.  State law required the probate court to record these births from 1867 to 1908, according to the Ohio Historical Society webpage.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If Nina's birth was recorded in a newspaper, I have not yet discovered it.  There are editions of the Sandusky Register in existence, and that is one avenue of research in the future.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am not aware of any surviving Bible record of the Haley family.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one does exist.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

The Haley's were members of the Evangelical Association.  I am not aware of any baptismal record for Nina at this time.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no evidence that Nina was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

Nina married Thomas Benton Hanlin on July 11, 1888 in Jay County, Indiana2.

Nina married George Zorn on June 15, 1901 in Jay County, Indiana3.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of Nina and Thomas' nuptials and Nina and George's nuptials.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

Nina and George's 25th wedding anniversary would have been June 15, 1926 and their 50th wedding anniversary would have been June 15, 1951.  Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if there was any mention of anniversary celebrations.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

There is no indication that Nina was ever divorced, but a thorough search of the court records in Jay County, Indiana needs to be completed.

     1.3. Death Certificate

Nina died in 19634, according to her tombstone.  I do not yet have a copy of her death certificate.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Will need to check the local newspapers in Jay County, Indiana for an obituary for Nina, once I have the exact date of death.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Once I have a copy of Nina's obituary, I can see if the funeral home was mentioned and then check with them to see if they have any additional records of Nina's funeral.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Nina's tombstone in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Jay County, Indiana4 has been photographed.  The marker lists both of her husbands.  The marker reads "Nina Hanlin Zorn 1869-1963".  Husbands "Benton Hanlin 1867-1900" and "George Zorn 1876-1952" are also listed.

          2.1.5. 1900 Federal Census

On June 18, 1900, Nina was enumerated as head of household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana9 as Nina R. Hamlin, age 30, widowed.  She was born November 1869 in Ohio.  Both of her parents were born in Ohio.  She could read and write and spoke English.  She owned her home free of mortgage.

          2.1.6. 1880 Federal Census

On June 22, 1880, Nina was enumerated in the George W. Haley household in Liberty Township, Seneca County, Ohio10 as Rachel A.P. Haley, age 10, daughter.  She had attended school within the year.  She was born in Ohio, as were both of her parents.

On June 6, 1870, Nina was enumerated in the George Haley household in Harrisville Township, Medina County, Ohio11 as Emma P. Haley, age 6 months, born Ohio.  She was born December 1869.

     2.2. State Census Records

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of records to see what light it might shed on the Haley or Zorn farm.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Not applicable, as Nina was female.

     3.2. Pension Records

I am not aware of any military service by Nina's husbands or father that would have made her eligible for any military benefits.

     3.3. Service Records

Not applicable, as Nina was female.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Jay County, Indiana, to see what records might mention Nina and her family.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Jay County, Indiana published a plat map in 1874, 1881, 1887, 1901, 1910 and 1920 that might be relevant in my search for Nina.  I have access to the 1887 and 1901 maps, and need to research them to see what they show.

5. Supplemental Records

Supplemental records to research for Nina include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

In 1916, Nina was residing in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana12.

Spencerville, Ohio
R.F.D.

Nov. 28 Dear Niece -

Don't let this little card scare you and think some thing wonderful will happen because I am writing, but I have thot [sic] of you often since Nin wrote you was not well.   Hope you are better by this time.  Would love to hear from you.  We are all well wish you could eat Thanksgiving dinner with us.  This has been a lovely day, had back door open all the time and no fire.

As ever your big Auntie Carrie

Beckie Thetsky was sewing for me last week made over Ma's plush coat for me put belt in it and _____.

----
This postcard was sent to my paternal greataunt, Vera (HALEY) STUBER from her aunt, Carrie (HALEY) GRAVES.  The Nin mentioned was Carrie's sister, Nina (HALEY) ZORN.  I cannot make out the year, but it must have been after 1910 as the Graves family was living in Midland, Michigan by then.

Thanksgiving Greeting : November 21, 1909

Nov. 21, 1909  Ashland, Ohio -

Dear Vera and all the rest. I rec'd your very welcome letter some time ago and could not get time to answer it.  We are all well Nin & Geo. started home yesterday morn. was going to stop at Lima over Sunday. We are going to begin packing up tomorrow and then when we get moved I will ans. your letter.  It is a bad rainy day and we are lonesome.  Zada and Rinda Hayes from Burbank are coming over here to night.  Zada's little boy is here now.  I wish I was out at your house for Thanksgiving dinner.  We may get packed up in time to be at Grandpas and visit them a day or two. Write soon from your Aunt Carrie & all.

----

This postcard was sent to my paternal greataunt, Vera HALEY, from her aunt, Carrie (HALEY) GRAVES.  Nin & Geo. mentioned in the card would be Carrie's sister Nina and her husband George ZORN.  The Grandpa referenced here could be Vera's grandfather, David SHERRICK (1823-1914), who lived in Ashland, Ohio.

The reference to packing and moving could be related to Arthur and Carrie (HALEY) GRAVES move to Midland, Michigan.  By the 1910 census, they were living in the 2nd ward of the city of Midland.

Interestingly, November 21, 1909 was also a Sunday just as this year.

Obituary: Mary Jane (Sherrick) (Haley) Kimble (1844-1916)

MRS. KIMBALL DIED SATURDAY

DEATH OCCURRED AT HER HOME IN NOBLE TOWNSHIP FOLLOWING ILLNESS

PAST 72 YEARS OF AGE

Funeral Will Be Held Tuesday Morning At The Mt. Zion Church

Mrs. Mary Haley Kimball, wife of Robert Kimball, died at her home in Noble township, Saturday morning, after a lingering illness. She was born in Ashland County, Ohio, January 13, 1844, having passed her 72nd birthday anniversary Friday. Her husband and the following children survive her: A.F. Haley, Rosston, Ohio; Eli Haley, Nina, wife of George Zorn, both of Noble township; Carrie, wife of Arthur Graves, of Midland, Mich.; Rev. E.D. Haley, of Celina, Ohio, Oral wife of Frank Bittikoffer, Bradford, Ohio. Her step-children are: Minnie wife of William Wells , of Ft. Recovery, Alberta and Wesley Kimball of Noble township. Three sisters and two brothers also remain.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock at Mt. Zion church, Rev. Kauffman and Rev. Baumgartner officiating. Burial will be made in Mt. Zion cemetery.

Comment: The correct spelling of the surname is KIMBLE, as evidence by her marriage license and other records. Mary Jane SHERRICK was my paternal 2nd-great grandmother. Her first husband, George Washington HALEY, passed away in 1892 and she remarried in 1897 to Robert E. KIMBLE. This obituary gives some new data for me, including places of residence of her children during this time period.
