1746 - Frances HAINES born in Burlington County, New Jersey.


1764 - John CANADAY married Margaret THORNBURGH in Rowan County, North Carolina.  John was the son of Charles CANADAY and Phoebe BEALS.


1774 - Jeffrey CHEW died in Gloucester County, New Jersey.  Jeffrey was the son of Nathaniel CHEW and Mary CLARK.  He was my 7x great-grandfather.


1776 - Frances HAINES married John HILLIER in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Frances was the daughter of Jeremiah HAINES and Hannah BONNELL.


1793 - Mary WILLIAMS married Jonathan HOGGATT.  Mary was the daughter of Richard WILLIAMS and Prudence BEALS.


1799 - Phebe JACKSON married Timothy JESSOP.  Phebe was the daughter of Curtis JACKSON and Ruth BEALS.


1809 - James McPheeters WALKER born. James was the son of Joseph WALKER and Martha McPHEETERS.


1810 - Bowater JACKSON married Jennie MACE in Stokes County, North Carolina.  Bowater was the son of Curtis JACKSON and Ruth BEALS.


1823 - George MAXSON married Sarah VAN HORN.  George was the son of Simeon MAXSON and Mary BABCOCK.


1832 - Selina HAWORTH born in Greene County, Tennessee.  Selina was the daughter of Nathaniel HAWORTH and Anna OLIPHANT.


1841 - Mary BEALS married Ephraim STOUT.  Mary was the daughter of John BEALS and Mary JOHNSON.


1845 - David WARDLAW born.  David was the son of James WARDLAW and Susanna GREEN.


1851 - Rebecca Hannah BALES married Eli C. CROSTHWAIT.  Rebecca was the daughter of Solomon BEALS and Elizabeth JOHN.


1854 - John Bovell McPHEETERS married Susana Clementina Vashti KELLY.  John was the son of Samuel McPHEETERS and Lucretia BARRETT.


1865 - Clarinda MAXSON died.  Clarinda was the daughter of Jonathan MAXSON and Christiana DAVIS.


1870 - Clara Belle FOLLOWAY born in Kentucky.  Clara was the daughter of James FOLLOWAY and Julia WILLIAMS.  Clara was Corinne's 2x great-grandmother.


1870 - John LEE born in Bledsoe County, Tennessee.  John was the son of William M. LEE and Elizabeth BROWN.


1886 - William George HALEY born in Huron, Erie County, Ohio.  William was the son of Franklin Andrew HALEY and Anna H. KUHL.


1887 - Manerva Lavonia SWAFFORD married Isaac M. BRADLEY in Ray County, Missouri.  Manerva was the daughter of John B. SWAFFORD and Nancy Rowena MILLARD.


1889 - Donovan R. CHEW married Bertha A. ADAMS in St. Joseph County, Indiana.  Donovan was the son of Ezekiel Cooper CHEW and Caroline Bishop WOOLSTON.


1899 - Ida ALDERMAN born.  Ida was the daughter of George W. ALDERMAN and Sarah JARRARD.


1893 - Rebecca West LOCK died.  Rebecca was the daughter of Nathaniel CHEW and Mary WEST.


1900 - Herman Victor MATTHEWS born.  Herman was the son of Fitzhugh Lee MATTHEWS and Mary Elizabeth SWAFFORD.


1909 - Cora E. GROENENDYKE married Garland HANCOCK in Madison County, Indiana.  Cora was the daughter of Thomas GROENENDYKE and Emily SMITH.


1909 - Samuel WARDLAW died in Washington Township, Brown County, Ohio. Samuel was the son of Levi WARDLAW and Alba HALL.


1938 - Dorothea MUELLER died in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.  Dorothea was the daughter of Johann Jacob DEUTSCH and Doris Elisabeth SCHUTTE.


1939 - Monroe CUMMINGS died in Graham, Young County, Texas.  Monroe was the son of Wyatt CUMMINGS and Margaret HENSON.


1977 - Ralph Morgan LeMASTER died in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California.  Ralph was the son of William Clifford LeMASTER and Lella Edith LEWIS.

Sunday's Obituary: Floyd LeMasters Sr. (1894-1982)

Floyd LeMasters Sr., RR 2, Union City, died early Friday morning at the Union City Memorial Hospital after suffering a heart attack earlier at his home.


Born Feb. 2, 1894, in Madison Township, Jay County, he was the son of Luman Cooper and Isabelle (Wehrly) LeMasters.  He was married Oct. 9, 1910, to Opal S. Gagle, who survives.  LeMasters was a retired carpenter and was also employed at Central Garage in Union City.  He was a member of the Praise Chapel Church of God at New Pittsburg.


Surviving besides his wife are one daughter, Mrs. Allen (Remonda) Hershman, RR 2, Ridgeville; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Floyd (Jane) LeMasters, Lexington, Ind.; three brothers, Gerald LeMasters, Virginia; Stanley LeMasters, Akron, Ohio; Elvin LeMasters, Columbus Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Lock, Richmond; and Mary Olive Taylor, Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.


Services are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Praise Chapel Church of God with Rev. John Carver officiating.  Burial will be in the Salamonia Cemetery.


Friends may call at the Williamson & Spencer Funeral Home from 2-5 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

Sunday's Obituary: John Leland LeMaster Sr. (1902-1980)

John L. LeMaster Sr., 77, Salamonia, a retired educator and former Jay County Auditor, died Saturday afternoon at the Jay County Hospital after an extended illness.


During his career in education, LeMaster served as principal at Gov. I.P. Gray School, Madison Township High School, Poling High School, Bryant High School, and Redkey Schools in Jay County.  He also was a teacher and coach for many years.  He held the position of county auditor from 1940 through 1946.


A graduate of Fort Recovery High School, he earned his bachelor's degree from Ball State Teachers College (now Ball State University), Muncie, and his master's degree from Indiana University, Bloomington.


He was born April 25, 1902 in Madison Township, Jay County, the son of Cooper and Isabelle (Wehrly) LeMaster.  He was married July 2, 1920 to Dortha Delauter, who died May 24, 1976.


LeMaster was a member of the Salamonia Christian Church.


Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Gail (Jerry) Stoner, Troy, Ohio; Mrs. Ralph (Ardis) Bickel, Anderson, and Mrs. Philip (Ann) Monger, Hagerstown; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. John (Helen) LeMaster Jr., and Mrs. William (Wanda) LeMaster, both of Salamonia; four brothers, Gerald LeMaster, Salamonia; Floyd LeMaster, Union City; Stanley LeMaster, Akron, Ohio, and Elvin LeMaster, Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Lock, Richmond, and Mrs. Mary O. Taylor, Atwater, Ohio; 21 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren.


Services will be conducted Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Williamson & Spencer Funeral Home in Portland.  Paul Albertson and Don Boyer will officiate.  Interment will follow in the Salamonia Cemetery.


Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. on Tuesday.  The family will be present from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Sunday's Obituary: Clarence Harrison LeMaster (1888-1963)

LeMaster Rites Here On Sunday

Clarence H. LeMaster, 75, a resident of Salamonia, died Thursday afternoon at the Union City Memorial Hospital.  He had recently undergone major surgery and had been in failing health one year and critical for one year.  He was born in Nebraska, June 14, 1888, the son of Cooper and Isabelle (Wehrly) LeMaster and was married to Mae Bickel, Feb. 28, 1911.  She survives, along with two sons and two daughters, Kenneth LeMaster, Ridgeville, Garth LeMaster, Portland, Mrs. Glenn Hummell, Union City, R.R. 3, and Mrs. Leland Addington, Union City; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; six brothers, Gerald LeMaster and John LeMaster, Salamonia, Floyd LeMaster, Union City, Stanley LeMaster, Akron, Ohio, Ord LeMaster, Portland, and Elvin LeMaster, Columbus, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Glen Lock, Middleboro, Mrs. Orville Lafollette and Mrs. Thornton Taylor, both of Akron, Ohio.

The deceased was a retired employee of the New Idea Factory at Coldwater, Ohio, and was custodian of the Salamonia United Church of Christ.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Williamson & Spencer Funeral Home in Portland.  Rev. Earl Lantz of Union City will officiate.  Burial will be in the Salamonia Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. Friday.

Family Milestones: April 17th

My maternal 4th-great granduncle, Samuel Pangburn WRIGHT, married on this date in 1845 in Highland County, Ohio to Rebecca Ruth HALL.  Samuel was the son of George and Elizabeth (ROBINS) WRIGHT, and the younger brother of my John WRIGHT.  Samuel was born September 22, 1816 in Adams County, Ohio.  Rebecca was born circa 1825 in Ohio.  I do not have her parentage.  They raised a family of 6 children in Brown County, Ohio.  Samuel died February 1860 in Brown County, Ohio.  I do not have Rebecca's date of death.

My maternal 6th-great grandparents, Seth PIERCE and Bethiah FIELD, were married on this date in 1767.  Seth was the son of Seth and Elizabeth (NYE) PIERCE.  Bethiah was the daughter of Bennett and Elizabeth (SPOFFORD) FIELD.  Seth was born September 12, 1744 in Woburn, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  Bethiah was born April 8, 1746 in Stafford, Windham County, Connecticut.  They had 12 children.  Bethiah died September 18, 1807.  Seth died 1835 in Homer, Cortland County, New York.

My paternal 6th-great grandaunt, Elizabeth DAVIS, was born on this date in 1717.  Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (MAXSON) DAVIS, and the older sister of my Thomas William DAVIS.  Elizabeth married to William BRAND.  I do not have dates of birth or death, nor parentage for William.  They had 6 children.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal great-granduncle, Henry Leonard WEHRLY, was born on this date in 1875 in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana.  Henry was the son of William P. and Olive Jane (SMITH) WEHRLY, and the younger brother of my Barbara Isabel WEHRLY.  Henry married August 23, 1896 to Mamie M. SALISBURY.  I do not have dates of birth or death, nor parentage for Mamie.  Henry died July 13, 1924.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 2nd-great granduncle, Nathaniel Derby CHEW, was born on this date in 1845 in New Jersey.  Nathaniel was the son of Dr. Ezekiel Cooper and Caroline Bishop (WOOLSTON) CHEW, and the older brother of my Mary Keziah CHEW.  Nathaniel married April 18, 1867 to Margaret H. HEISTAND.  Margaret was born May 1845 in Ohio.  I do not have her parentage.  They had 7 children.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Rebecca West CHEW, was born on this date in 1814.  Rebecca was the daughter of Rev. Nathaniel and Mary (WEST) CHEW, and the older sister of my Ezekiel Cooper CHEW.  Rebecca married December 29, 1831 to Charles LOCK.  I do not have dates of birth or death, nor parentage for Charles.  Rebecca died April 10, 1893.  Nothing further is known at this time.

Family Milestones: March 19th

My maternal 2nd-great granduncle, Samuel S. LAMBERTSON, married on this date in 1897 in Tipton County, Indiana to Ida M. STONE.  Samuel was the son of Carey W. and Clara E. (COOK) LAMBERTSON, and the younger brother of my Charles LAMBERTSON. Samuel was born January 11, 1875 in Preble County, Ohio.  Ida was born in 1878 in Franklin County, Indiana, the daughter of William and Alice (SEALS) STONE.  They had one child that died before the 1900 census, when they were living in Hamilton County, Indiana.  Ida died June 19, 1900 in Hamilton County, Indiana.  Samuel died October 15, 1911 in Elwood, Madison County, Indiana.  Samuel is buried in the Elwood City Cemetery, Elwood, Madison County, Indiana.

My paternal great aunt, Dorothy Dot LeMASTER, was born on this date in 1900 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.  Dorothy was the daughter of Luman Cooper and Barbara Isabel (WEHRLY) LeMASTERS, and the older sister of my Ord Wehrly LeMASTER.  Dorothy married July 21, 1921 to Charles Glendon HUNT.  Charles was born July 13, 1900 in Albright, Indiana, the son of William Allen and Mary Leota (WEBER) HUNT.  They lived in Richmond, Indiana and had 3 children.  Dorothy married secondly on February 8, 1962 to Glen LOCK.  Charles died February 11, 1956 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana.  Dorothy died October 1984 in Centerville, Wayne County, Indiana.

My maternal 6th-great granduncle, Robert WRIGHT, was baptized on this date in 1758 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  Robert was the son of Deacon John and Hannah (FESSENDEN) WRIGHT, and the younger brother of my John WRIGHT.  Robert married circa 1780 to Catherine APPLEGATE.  Catherine was born circa 1762 in New Jersey, the daughter of William and Sarah Catherine (WIGGINS) APPLEGATE.  Robert served in the Revolutionary War.  He was a farmer in Clermont and Brown Counties, Ohio.  They had 9 children.  Catherine died before March 12, 1839 in Brown County, Ohio.  Robert died before April 21, 1840 in Brown County, Ohio.

My maternal 5th-great granduncle, Elijah PIERCE, married on this date in 1801 to Patty MOULTON.  Elijah was the son of Seth and Bethiah (FIELD) PIERCE, and the younger brother of my Gordon PIERCE.  Elijah was born April 27, 1781.  Patty was born February 5, 1782.  They had at least 5 children.  Patty died April 17, 1838.  Elijah died April 7, 1832.  

My paternal grandaunt, Dorothy Dot LeMASTER, married on this date in 1962 to Glen LOCK.  Dorothy's first husband, Charles Glendon HUNT, had died February 11, 1956 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana.  I do not have dates of birth or death for Glen.  Dorothy was born March 19, 1900 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana, the daughter of Luman Cooper and Barbara Isabel (WEHRLY) LeMASTERS.  Dorothy died October 1984 in Centerville, Wayne County, Indiana.

My maternal 5th-great grandmother, Mary Ann NOSLER, married on this date in 1855 in Owen County, Indiana to John LAYMAN.  Mary Ann's first husband, David CROCKETT, had died August 1854 in Owen County, Indiana.  I do not have dates of birth or death for John.  Mary Ann was born March 26, 1803 in Virginia, the daughter of Conrad and Sarah (PAINS) NOSLER. Mary Ann died August 7, 1872 in Owen County, Indiana.

My maternal 2nd-great grandaunt, Mary Jane KING, married on this date in 1871 in Madison County, Indiana to Leroy YOUNG.  Mary Jane was born December 8, 1849 in Orestes, Madison County, Indiana, the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (SHAW) KING, and the older sister of my Ellen KING.  Leroy was born November 14, 1843 in Indiana, the son of William and Jane (________) YOUNG.  They raised at least 3 children in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana.  Leroy died March 26, 1893 in Orestes, Madison County, Indiana.  Mary Jane died April 4, 1935 in Orestes, Madison County, Indiana.

My paternal 2nd-great grandaunt, Catherine B. SHERRICK, was born on this date in 1847 in Ashland County, Ohio.  Catherine was the daughter of David and Susan (JACOBS) SHERRICK, and the younger sister of my Mary Jane SHERRICK.  Catherine married Eli L. OVERS.  I do not have dates of birth or death for Eli.  Catherine died August 30, 1928 in Ashland, Ashland County, Ohio.

My paternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Rebecca West CHEW, married on this date in 1831 to Charles LOCK.  Rebecca was the daughter of Nathaniel and Mary (WEST) CHEW, and the older sister of my Ezekiel Cooper CHEW.  Rebecca was born April 17, 1814.  Rebecca died April 10, 1893.  Nothing further is known at this time.

My paternal 4th-great granduncle, Elisha Dunham CHEW, married on this date in 1808 in Gloucester County, New Jersey to Elizabeth HERITAGE, daughter of Richard and Anna (STILES) HERITAGE.  Elisha was the son of Nathaniel and Sarah (SPRINGER) CHEW, and the older brother of my Nathaniel CHEW.  Elisha was born October 25, 1785 in Gloucester County, New Jersey.  Elizabeth was born November 15, 1784 in Gloucester County, New Jersey.  They had 6 children.  Elisha was a farmer in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa.  Elizabeth died October 2, 1864 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa.  Elisha died March 18, 1876 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa.

My paternal 3rd-great grandparents, Dr. Ezekiel Cooper CHEW and Caroline Bishop WOOLSTON, married on this date in 1842 in New Jersey, probably Gloucester County.  Ezekiel was the son of Nathaniel and Mary (WEST) CHEW.  Caroline was the daughter of Abel B. and Rachel (WOOLSTON) WOOLSTON.  Ezekiel was born January 17, 1822 in Gloucester County, New Jersey.  Caroline was born February 6, 1826 in Vincentown, Burlington County, New Jersey.  They had 14 children.  Caroline died February 27, 1869 in Rossburg, Stark County, Ohio.  Ezekiel died August 27, 1888 in St. Joseph's County, Indiana.

My paternal 3rd-great grandaunt, Elizabeth MAXSON, was born on this date in 1803 in Harrison County, Virginia.  Elizabeth was the daughter of Jesse and Sarah (SUTTON) MAXSON, and the older sister of my Prudence MAXSON.  Elizabeth married April 1821 in Clark County, Ohio to William S. FURROW.  They had 12 children.  Elizabeth died March 3, 1892.  Nothing further is known at this time.

Today's featured relative in my database is my paternal 4th-great grandfather, Nathaniel Chew.

Nathaniel was born November 10, 1786 in Gloucester Co., NJ., the son of Nathaniel and Sarah (Springer) Chew. Nathaniel married Keziah Driver circa 1805, no known children. Nathaniel married secondly circa 1812 probably in Gloucester Co., NJ to Mary West, daughter of Job and Sarah (Jackson) West. Mary was born June 17, 1795 in New Jersey and died February 27, 1848 in New Jersey. Nathaniel married thirdly December 10, 1848 in Iowa to Nancy Mosier. Nathaniel died January 24, 1866 in Mahaska Co., IA.

Nathaniel was a minister in the Methodist Episcopal church.

Known children of Nathaniel and Mary (West) Chew are as follows :
