The ELLIOTT surname is in my paternal line.  The origins of the surname are unknown at this time.


Stories and history :


Ahnentafel # 77 : Jane Elliott (c1792-aft1860).  Jane was born circa 1792 in Georgia.  She married circa 1812 to Jacob Smith (c1792-1866).  Jacob was born circa 1792 in New Jersey.  Jacob died October 18, 1866 in Hardin County, Iowa.  Jane died sometime after the 1860 census, when she was enumerated in Eldora Township, Hardin County, Iowa.

Surname Saturday : SMITH

The SMITH surname is in my paternal line.  The origins of the surname are unknown.


Stories and history:


Ahnentafel # 19: Olive Jane Smith (1846-1913). Olive was born June 23, 1846 in Cass County, Michigan.  She married August 4, 1866 in Jay County, Indiana to William P. Wehrly (1845-1909).  William was born November 2, 1845 in Preble County, Ohio.  They raised 13 children in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana where William was a farmer, mortician and sawmiller.  William served in Company I, 130th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.  William died June 16, 1909 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.  Olive died January 6, 1913 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.  Both are buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.


Ahnentafel # 38: William P. Smith (1815-1894).  William was born July 25, 1815 in Clark County, Ohio.  He married October 3, 1836 to Prudence Maxson (1817-1890).  Prudence was born June 15, 1817 in Greene County, Ohio.  They had 4 children and lived in Cass County, Michigan and Jay County, Indiana.  William was a minister and farmer and served in Company I, 130th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.  Prudence died February 22, 1890 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.  William died April 19, 1894 in Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana.  Both are buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.


Ahnentafel # 76: Jacob Smith (c1792-1866).  Jacob was born circa 1792 in New Jersey.  He married circa 1812 to Jane Elliott (c1792-aft1860).  Jane was born circa 1792 in Georgia.  They were living in Cass County, Michigan in the 1850 census and Eldora Township, Hardin County, Iowa in the 1860 census.  Jacob died October 18, 1866 in Hardin County, Iowa.

Tombstone Tuesday: William P. and Prudence (Maxson) Smith



My paternal 3rd-great grandparents, William P. and Prudence (MAXSON) SMITH, are buried in the Salamonia Cemetery, Jay County, Indiana.

William P. was born July 25, 1815 in Clark County, Ohio, the son of Jacob and Jane (ELLIOTT) SMITH.

Prudence was born June 15, 1817 in Greene County, Ohio, the daughter of Jesse and Sarah (SUTTON) MAXSON.

William and Prudence were married on October 3, 1836. After their marriage, they lived in Jay County, Indiana before moving to Cass County, Michigan between 1844 and 1851. By 1851 they were back in Jay County, Indiana. William served in the Civil War in Company I, 139th Indiana Infantry. After the war, they relocated to Humboldt, Richardson County, Nebraska between 1869 and 1881 when they returned to Jay County. William was a farmer and a minister, and was often referred to as Elder William Smith.

  • John H. SMITH (1842- )
  • Olive Jane SMITH (1846-1913); married William P. WEHRLY; 13 children

William P. Smith household - Jay Co., IN & Richardson Co., NE

The William P. SMITH household appears in the 1860 census of Madison Twp., Jay Co., IN and the 1870 census of Humboldt, Richardson Co., NE. William was my paternal 3rd great-grandfather, the son of Jacob and Jane (ELLIOTT) SMITH.

In the 1860 census, William is a 44 year-old Campbellite Minister, born in Ohio, with a personal estate valued at $200. His wife, Prudence, was aged 43 and also born in Ohio. Children in the family included : John, aged 17, born in Indiana; Olive, aged 13, born in Michigan; and Tilson, aged 10, born in Michigan.

In the 1870 census, William is listed as a 55 year-old Farmer, born in Ohio, with real estate valued at $800 and a personal estate valued at $150. Wife Prudence was listed as aged 54, and born in Ohio. Son Tillson, aged 20, born in Michigan, was working on the farm.

Jacob Smith household - Hardin Co., IA

The Jacob SMITH household appears in the 1860 census of Eldora Twp., Hardin Co., IA. Jacob is my paternal 4th great grandfather.

In the 1860 census, he is listed as "J. SMITH", a 68 year-old Farmer, born in New Jersey with a personal estate valued at $300. His wife, "J. SMITH", was a 68 year-old female born in Georgia.

My research notes state that Jacob and Jane (ELLIOTT) SMITH moved to Iowa in the mid 1850's and died in Hardin Co. Their son, William P., was my ancestor, though this line needs more work before I am confident that I have the correct family.

Obituary : Kenneth P. LeMaster

Portland - Kenneth P. Lemaster, 89, 4415 E. Treaty Line Road, died Friday at home after a long illness.
He worked at Portland Forge for 20 years, retiring in 1973. He was also a retired farmer.
Survivors : a son, Francis (Bud) LeMaster; three daughters, Wanda Louck (husband : Joe), Janet Lautenheiser and Nancy Elliott (husband : James); 21 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death : Mary Louis Dalrymple (Jan. 29, 2001).
Services : 11 a.m. Tuesday, Williamson and Spencer Funeral Home.
Burial : Salamonia Cemetery.
Calling : 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Today's featured relative in my database is my paternal 3rd great-grandfather, William P. Smith.

William was born July 25, 1815 in Clark Co., OH., the son of Jacob and Jane (Elliott) Smith. William was married on October 3, 1836 to Prudence Maxson, daughter of Jesse and Sarah (Sutton) Maxson. Prudence was born June 15, 1817 in Greene Co., OH, and died February 22, 1890 in Salamonia, Jay Co., IN. William died April 19, 1894 in Salamonia, Jay Co., IN.

William was a minister of the Gospel and moved around quite a bit. In 1840 he was in Pike Twp., Jay Co., IN; between 1844-1851 he was in Cass Co., MI; by 1851 he was back in Jay Co., IN; also lived in Randolph Co., IN; between 1869-1881 he was in Richardson Co., NE.

During the Civil War, William served in Co. I, 139th Indiana Infantry as a Sergeant, for which he received a pension.

I descend from William and Prudence's daughter, Olive Jane as follows :

Olive Jane Smith married William P. Wehrly
Barbara Isabelle Wehrly married Luman Cooper LeMasters (my great-grandparents)
