Am I Really Irish?

While celebrating St. Patrick's Day yesterday at work by dressing up all in green, I was asked if I was Irish, as LeMaster didn't strike a co-worker as a particularly Irish name.  I've been working on my genealogy off and on for years, and have identified a few Irish ancestors - though some were actually Scots-Irish.

My DNA results for ethnicity from Ancestry did show 17% Irish.

Irish Ancestors :

[unknown] Gary : My paternal 4th-great grandfather, an as yet unknown man, was reported as being born in Ireland by my 3rd-great grandmother on the 1880 census.  Rachel Gary was born March 25, 1816 in Fairfield County, Ohio.  This is the only paternal Irish line that I'm aware of at the moment.

Martha McPheeters : Martha was my maternal 7th-great grandmother, the daughter of William McPheeters and Rebecca Thompson.  Martha was born in Ireland. She married Samuel Downey in Pennsylvania and died 1801 in Clark County, Kentucky. She was the mother of at least ten children: Ann, Betsey, Isabella, Margaret, Martha, Rebecca, Samuel, William, Mary and Janet.

Peter Swafford : Peter was my maternal 7th-great grandfather.  According to my database he was born circa 1740 in Dublin, Ireland and died in Greenville, South Carolina.  He married Rennie Howard and was the father of eight children.

Rennie Howard : Rennie was my maternal 7th-great grandmother, the wife of Peter Swafford.  According to my database, she was born circa 1745 in Dublin, Ireland and died in South Carolina.  She was the mother of eight children: Jacob, Isaac, William, Paul, Abraham, Aaron, John and Thomas.

Elizabeth Hedge : Elizabeth was my maternal 7th-great grandmother, the wife of David Crockett.  According to my database, she was born 1730 in Ireland and died August 1777 in Hawkins County, North Carolina.  She was the mother of at least three children: William, John and Alexander.

William Wardlaw : William was my maternal 7th-great grandfather, the son of Robert Wardlaw.  According to my database, he was born circa 1700 in either Scotland or Ireland.  He married Jane Harper and died in 1762 in Augusta County, Virginia.  He was the father of seven children : James, John, Hugh, Joseph, Robert, William and Margaret.

Joshua Hadley : Joshua was my maternal 8th-great grandfather, the son of Simon and Ruth Hadley.  Joshua was born March 6, 1703 in Kings County, Ireland.  He married Patience Brown in 1735 and died after 1760 in Cane Creek, North Carolina.  He was the father of nine children: Mary, Jeremiah, Joshua, Joseph, Deborah, Hannah, Catherine, Lydia and Simon.

William Millikan : William was my maternal 8th-great grandfather.  According to my database, he was born circa 1720 in Ireland.  He married in 1740 Chester County, Pennsylvania to Jane White.  He was the father of ten children: Abigail, Sarah, David, Mary, William, Benjamin, Hannah, Alexander, Martha and Samuel.

William McPheeters : William was my maternal 8th-great grandfather.  According to my database, he was born between 1687 and 1691 in Ireland and died in 1773 in Augusta County, Virginia.  He married Rebecca Thompson and was the father of eight children: Martha, Anne, Mary, John, David, Janett, Samuel and William.

Simon Hadley : Simon was my maternal 9th-great grandfather, the son of Simon Hadley.  According to my database, Simon was born 1677 in Ireland and died 1756 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  He was married to Ruth [surname unknown] and the father of eight children.

Ruth [surname unknown]: Ruth was my maternal 9th-great grandmother, the wife of Simon Hadley.  According to my database, she was born in 1677 in Ireland and died December 8, 1750 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  She was the mother of eight children : Joseph, Deborah, Joshua, Simon, Hannah, Ruth, Catherine and Ann.

John Allen : John was my maternal 9th-great grandfather, the son of John Allen.  According to my database, John was born August 3, 1694 in Ireland.  He married Amy Cox in March 1719 in Chester County, Pennsylvania and died September 16, 1771 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  He was the father of nine children : John, Rebecca, Amy, Elizabeth, William, Joseph, Mary, Phebe and Benjamin.

Simon Hadley : Simon was my maternal 10th-great grandfather.  According to my database, he was born 1640 in Ireland and died circa 1711.  He married Katherine Talbot and was the father of at least four children : John, Elizabeth, Jane and Simon.

Thomas Dixon : Thomas was my maternal 10th-great grandfather, the husband of Rose.  All I have in my database is that he was born before 1635 in Ireland and died after 1680 in New Castle County, Delaware.

Rose [unknown surname] : Rose was my maternal 10th-great grandmother, the wife of Thomas Dixon.  All I have in my database is that she was born before 1641 in Ireland and died after 1671 in Delaware.  She was the mother of at least three children: William, Dinah and Rose.

Looking over these names, I realize I have a lot more research to do on these lines to fill in the gaps in the research.

Marriage Record : George Haley to Rachel H. Gary, 1835, Hardin County, Ohio

While searching at FamilySearch and updating my database, I located the marriage record for my paternal 3rd-great grandparents, George Haley and Rachel H. Gary, which took place on January 1, 1835 in Hardin County, Ohio.

"Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-2013," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XDPX-J7P : 8 December 2014), George Haley and Rachel H. Gary, 01 Jan 1835; citing Hardin, Ohio, United States, reference p 7; county courthouses, Ohio; FHL microfilm 914,842.
George was the son of George and Barbara Haley, Rachel's parentage is unknown at this point.  George was born in Switzerland and came with his parents to Fairfield County, Ohio in 1816.  Rachel was born in Fairfield County in 1816.  George was a minister in the Evangelical Association, and one of his early appointments may have been in Hardin County.

I do hereby certify that on the first day of January AD 1835 by virtue of a license from the Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas George Haley and Rachel H Gary were legally joined in marriage by me a Justice of the peace in and for the county of Hardin.  Given under my hand and seal this fifteenth day of January A.D. 1835  - George H. Hauser, J.P.

Interesting to note that Rachel's middle initial "H." was given, perhaps to distinguish her from another Rachel Gary in the area.

George E. Haley household, 1940, Marion County, Ohio

Located the 1940 census record of the George E. Haley household in Claridon Township, Marion County, Ohio.  George was my paternal 1st cousin 3 times removed - our common ancestors are George J. Haley and Rachel H. Gary.

1940 U.S. Census, Marion County, Ohio, population schedule, Claridon Township, enumeration district (ED) ED 51-4, SD 8, sheet 2B, household 42, ; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 12 December 2016); National Archives, Washington, D.C..

At the time of enumeration, George and his wife were living on a farm in Claridon Township, Marion County, Ohio.  He owned his home and the value was $3500.  George was 76 years old and born in Ohio.  His wife, Elizabeth, was also 76 years old and born in Ohio. Their residence in 1935 was listed as the same place.

The record shows that both had completed the 8th grade in education and no occupation was listed.  However, other records I have for George indicate that he was an attorney, so I'm not sure why it only listed an 8th grade education.

In my database, George was the son of William Wesley Haley and Jane Elizabeth Owen. He died November 15, 1949 at Mt. Gilead, Morrow County, Ohio and was buried in the Claridon Cemetery in Marion County, Ohio.  Wife Elizabeth's maiden name was Devore.

If you have additional information or are connected to this family, I would love to hear from you.

Death Record : Alfred Haldeman, 1917, Morrow County, Ohio

"Ohio, Deaths, 1908-1953," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XZVN-LZG : accessed 5 September 2015), Alfred Haldeman, 07 Mar 1917; citing Troy Twp., Morrow, Ohio, reference fn 20924; FHL microfilm 1,983,937.
Alfred Haldeman was my paternal 2nd-great granduncle by marriage, married to Susanna Jane Haley (1844-1899), the daughter of George J. and Rachel (Gary) Haley.  Working on updating Ohio death records at FamilySearch for my RootsMagic database, I realized that I didn't have his date of death.

Alfred was born March 15, 1844 in Ohio, according to his death certificate, the son of Christian and Susan (Brinkely) Haldeman.  He died March 7, 1917 in Troy Township, Morrow County, Ohio due to pulmonary tuberculosis.

The informant for the death certificate was his son, Harvey L. Haldeman, and Alfred was buried in the Haldeman Cemetery.  At the time of his death, he was listed as married, but I don't have a second marriage for him.

A search at FindAGrave located his memorial page, where it states that Alfred remarried to Mary Ann Stull on November 13, 1900 in Morrow County, Ohio.  Will have to search for this record as well.

Alfred and Susan (Haley) Haldeman were the parents of seven known children: Vera B., George Allen, Maude, Christian E., Vernon J., Frank J. and Harvey Levi.  I have not traced their descendants but need to do so as they might have photographs, etc. of the Haley side.

If you have any additional information or corrections or are related to this family, I would love to hear from you.

DEATH Claimed Well-Known Huron Woman in a Cleveland Hospital

Special to the Star-Journal

HURON, O.  Feb. 10. - Mrs. Adam Holzhauer, a well known resident of this place, died Sunday morning at a hospital in Cleveland, where she had been taken last Tuesday to undergo and operation.  An examination of Mrs. Holzhauer's condition shortly after her arrival disclosed the fact that she was suffering with a cancer in the pit of her stomach, making an operation impossible.

Mrs. Holzhauer was 57 years of age.  She leaves a husband, one son, Frank, and one daughter, Emma.  The remains will be brought here this evening and the funeral will occur Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the Evangelical church.

----
Another obituary located at Ancestry.com for Mary Elizabeth (Haley) Holzhauer, daughter of George J. and Rachel (Gary) Haley, my paternal 2x-great grandaunt.  This one gives the names of two surviving children that I previously did not know.

The earlier obit from the Evangelical Messenger did not give the place of death.

Her memorial page at FindAGrave is located here.  The names of her deceased children are there as well : Jennie and John.

I've done some preliminary research at Ancestry family trees and it appears that daughter Jennie may have died from suicide.  More mysteries.

George Haley, was born October 24, 1848, in Fairfield County, Ohio, and died February 9, 1908.  In the spring of 1863 she came with her parents to Huron, Ohio.  Soon afterwards she gave her heart to God and united with our Church at Huron, Ohio, of which she was a very faithful member.  In 1869 she was united in marriage with Adam Holzhauer; the union was blessed with 2 sons and 2 daughters; one son and 1 daughter preceded her in death.  The cause of her death was cancer of the stomach.  She was a good wife and a loving mother, a noble and devout Christian, a regular attendant at the church services, and ever ready to assist in every worthy enterprise of the church.  She leaves husband, 1 son, 1 daughter, 4 brothers, 3 sisters and a large circle of other relatives and friends.    C.H. BUNDT

----
This obituary for Mary Elizabeth (Haley) Holzhauer helps connect her to the family of George J. and Rachel (Gary) Haley.  Prior to this find, I had only tracked her through the 1860 census, when she was 11, and she was not with the family in the 1870.  As her obituary indicates, she married in 1869 to Adam Holzhauer.  This now gives me another line to track down to the present, as she had 2 sons and 2 daughters for me to research.

Obituary : Rachel (Gary) Haley (1816-1897)

Evangelical Messenger, December 8, 1897, page 179

Located the obituary of my paternal 3rd-great grandmother, Rachel (Gary) Haley (1816-1897) in the Evangelical Messenger, a publication of the Evangelical Association.

SISTER RACHEL HALEY

Rachel Haley, nee Gary, widow of Rev. G. Haley, was born in Liberty, Fairfield Co., O., March 22, 1816.

She was united in holy matrimony with George J. Haley, January 1, 1835.  This union was blessed with 10 children, 5 sons and 5 daughters.  Her husband and 1 son preceded her.  She leaves 9 children, 50 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Mother Haley was converted in early life and joined the Evangelical Association, of which she remained a true and devoted member until death.

About the year 1841 her husband yielded to his call to the ministry, and for 23 years she experienced the trials and hardships of pioneer missionary life.  For 8 years her husband was away from home much of the time, so the care of the large family was left to her supervision almost exclusively.

For 40 years she was deprived of hearing the precious Word of God and the sweet songs of Zion which she loved so much, nevertheless she was always a regular attendant at church services.

In her last illness, caused by old age, she stated that she had always found great comfort in reading the Word of God.

Through the kindness of Brother and Sister Haley, the Erie Conference had a pleasant camp-ground on their farm for many years.

The deceased fell asleep in Jesus at the home of her son, Frank Haley, near Huron, Ohio, November 25, 1897, aged 81 years, 8 months and 3 days.

The German services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. A.H. Wendt, and the English by the undersigned.    - J.G. Ziegler

---
Interesting to note that she was deaf for the last 40 years of her life.  Services were performed both in English and German.

Comparing the numbers given for the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, I have the names of all 10 children at the time of her death as well as the 50 grandchildren, but only 9 of the great-grandchildren.

Would like to find her origins, the biography in the Jay County History states her origins were Irish, but I'm wondering if they weren't German.
