Petition of Rueben Claton, Shelby County, Ohio, 1853

While searching at the Allen County Public Library's Genealogy Center in Fort Wayne on Sunday, I started digging into some of the published books on the stacks relating to Shelby County, Ohio.  I was looking for some more evidence to confirm my theories about what happened to the widow Hannah Lemasters, widow of Lemuel Quin Lemasters.

In the book, "Complete Record of Land Sales : Probate Court - Shelby County, Ohio, 1852-1862" compiled by Gladys Dearduff and published in 1997 by the Shelby County Genealogical Society, I located the following :

1853 Nov 5 LIMUEL Q. LEMASTER estate.  Petition by Rueben CLATON, grdn of minor heirs: Martha, Eljwah & Jacob LEMASTER. Dower rights to Hannah CLATON.  Apprs: Abraham STOUT, Jesse LOW & Peter SHEPLEY.  Land : part of S 1/2 SE 1/4 Sec 33 T2 R73 (ca 40 acres) ; sold 16 Feb 1854 to Wm. HOBBY.
Though I need to dig into the actual probate records (which are online at FamilySearch), this snippet tells my that the Hannah Lemasters whose marriage I located in Shelby County to Ruben Claton on June 1, 1851 was the widow of Lemuel Quin Lemasters.  This land sale record was protecting her dower rights (rights she brought into the marriage) and names the minor children of Hannah & Lemuel, even if they did mangle the spellings.  The children were Martha, Elgiva and Jacob.

I'm so used to alternative spellings for Lemaster/Lemasters and now I'm pretty sure that Claton is an alternative spelling for Clayton.

The book was located in the stacks with a call letter of Gc 977.101 Sh4sL

Marriage Record: Hannah Lemasters to Ruben Claton, Shelby County, Ohio, 1851

"Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-1997," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XZZQ-85C : accessed 17 Nov 2014), Ruben Claton and Hannah Lemasters, 01 Jun 1851; citing Shelby, Ohio, United States, reference vo13 p261 No3; county courthouses, Ohio; FHL microfilm 562858.

The State of Ohio, Shelby County, S.S.

I certify that I have this day solemnized the marriage of Ruben Claton with Hannah Lemasters.

Witness my hand this 1 day of June A.D. 1851.

V. Guerin, Minister.

----

Located this marriage record of Hannah Lemasters and Ruben Claton (Clayton?) on June 1, 1851 in Shelby County, Ohio.  This was one of the various Lemaster marriage records found in the county on FamilySearch.

I believe that this Hannah is the widow of Lemuel Quin Lemasters, who died in June 1843 in Shelby County.  Lemuel was the son of Jacob and Hannah (---) Lemasters.  I believe Ruben's surname is Clayton.

I've been doing some digging in probate records in Shelby County, and am pretty sure that this is Lemuel's widow based on the records I've found.  More to come.

DNA Match : Cousin Lila

Made a DNA connection at 23andMe with cousin Lila, who shares 1 segment of DNA with my mother.  None of that DNA passed to me, at least not enough for Lila to show up as a match on my DNA relatives.

Lila and my mother match on chromosome 19:

ComparisonChromosomeStart pointEnd pointGenetic distance# SNPs
Lila vs. Gloria 1910000001100000025.4 cM1957

We've been trading messages back and forth, and by looking at her family tree I was able to find the connection - through the Hadley family.  This is one of the Quaker lines that stretches pretty far back.

Lila  and Travis

1. Sixth cousin 3 times removed (common ancestor: Joshua Hadley & Patience Brown)
2. Eighth cousin twice removed (common ancestor: James Brown & Honour Clayton)
3. Ninth cousin twice removed (common ancestor: Richard Brown & Mary [brown])
4. Ninth cousin twice removed (common ancestor: Richard Brown & Mary [brown])
5. Ninth cousin twice removed (common ancestor: William Clayton & Prudence Lanckford)

6. Ninth cousin twice removed (common ancestor: William Clayton & Prudence Lanckford)

Joshua Hadley (1703-c1760) and wife Patience Brown (1712-1783) were our common ancestors.  Lila descends from son Simon (1737-1803), while I descend from daughter Mary (1739-1810).

The Hadley Society has a searchable database at WorldConnect.

Phebe Ann Beals (1831- ), Randolph County, Indiana

Working on filling in some gaps in my database by utilizing the "Indiana Marriages, 1811-1959" database at Familysearch.org to see what updates and corrections I could find.

Phebe Ann Beals (1831-    ) was the daughter of Daniel and Catherine (Jackson) Beals.  Her marriage on August 14, 1852 in Randolph County, Indiana to Jesse F. Baldwin was found in the database.  Prior to this find, I didn't have the exact location of their marriage.

"Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1959," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5P3-BLY : accessed 15 Oct 2013), Jesse F Baldwin and Phebe Ann Beals, 1852.

Amer Jackson Beals (1818-1862), Randolph County, Indiana

Working on filling in some gaps in my database by utilizing the "Indiana Marriages, 1811-1959" database at Familysearch.org to see what updates and corrections I could find.

Amer Jackson Beals (1818-1862) was the son of Daniel and Catherine (Jackson) Beals.  His marriage on October 16, 1842 in Randolph County, Indiana to Harriett Higginbotham was found in the database.  Harriett's surname is spelled both Higginbotham and Hickingbothum in the same document.  Prior to this find, I had the date of their wedding incorrectly as October 12th.

"Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1959," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5P7-8KQ : accessed 14 Oct 2013), Amer J Beals and Harriet Hickingbothum, 1842.
Amer's second marriage, also in Randolph County, Indiana, was on August 11, 1857 to Matilda H. Nolin.  Prior to finding this in the database, I did not have the date or location of their marriage.  I also had her name as Matilda Nolan Quick.  That could be a surname from a previous marriage, but the record clearly shows her surname as Nolin.

"Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1959," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5PQ-G5T : accessed 14 Oct 2013), Amer J Beals and Matilda H Nolins, 1857.

Amer was my maternal fourth cousin six times removed.  Our common ancestors were John Beals and Mary Clayton.  Amer died April 16, 1862 in Nashville, Tennessee.  Not sure at this point if he was a Civil War casualty.

Joel Bales (1849- ), Randolph County, Indiana

Working on filling in some gaps in my database by utilizing the "Indiana Marriages, 1811-1959" database at Familysearch.org to see what updates and corrections I could find.

Joel Bales (1849-    ) was the son of Amer Jackson and Harriett (Higginbotham) Bales.  His marriage to Mary C. Abbott on March 21, 1871 in Randolph County, Indiana was found in the database.  Prior to this find, I did not have the date or place of their marriage.

"Indiana, Marriages, 1811-1959," index and images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/V5PM-9RT : accessed 14 Aug 2013), Joel F Bales and Mary C Abbott, 1871.
Joel was my maternal fifth cousin five times removed.  Our common ancestors are John Beals and Mary Clayton.  Nothing further is known of Joel and Mary's family at this time.
