GEDmatch Comparison : Cousin Judy

Submitted my raw DNA file from 23andMe to the free third party tool, GEDmatch.com for comparison.  GEDmatch allows users from the three main testing sites, 23andMe, FamilyTreeDNA and Ancestry.com upload their raw data files and then the software will compare your autosomal DNA for matches.

While waiting on my file M170652 to be processed for the "one to many" matches, I was able to compare my file using the "one to one" match of my cousin, Judy.  We had corresponded years ago, and recently reconnected on Facebook. Judy and I connect on my maternal side and has her mother's file at GEDmatch.

This was the comparison that GEDmatch did on the DNA file of Mildred Crane Moore and myself.

The prediction was 3.4 generations to the MRCA (most recent common ancestor).

Mary Ellen Swafford (common ancestor)
Ida Davis & unknown                               Mary Florence Gilliland & Thomas Crane  (half sisters)
June Gilliland & Clemon Lambertson            Mildred Louise Crane & Merrill L. Moore (1st cousins)
Bonnie Lambertson & William Wright           Judy Moore & Troy Hill (2nd cousins)
Gloria Wright & Ord LeMaster
Travis LeMaster

Judy and my mom are 2nd cousins once removed, and Judy and I are 2nd cousins twice removed.  Though we already knew this on paper, it's nice to have the connection confirmed through DNA.

I'm eagerly awaiting GEDmatch fully processing my files, so that I can match with other cousins and begin sharing.  Another feature of the site is the ability to compare GEDCOMs.  I've uploaded a GEDCOM there as well, and the file number is 924805.

The following sketches about PENISTEN men in the Pike County, Ohio are were found in the book "History of lower Scioto Valley, Ohio..." by Andrew Roy, 1884, Chicago, Inter-state Pub. Co., page 769

George Penisten

George Penisten, Sr., was born in the State of New Jersey, and while still in his youth removed to Kentucky.  From there he emigrated to Ohio about the year 1797 and settled on what was then known as "Bullskin" near Cincinnati.  He afterward located in the present territory of Pike County (then a part of Ross County) where he died about the year 1847, at the age of 79 years, nine months, one day.  He reared a family of ten children; five boys and five girls, all of whom lived to rear families of their own.  George Penisten, Jr., the only surviving son of George Penisten, Sr., was born in 1804.  In 1833 he married Vienna Murphy.  They reared a family of eight children, five boys and three girls, all of whom are now dead except three.  Isaac C., the second son, died while a member of the Ohio Legislature.  He served two terms as Auditor of Pike County.  George Penisten lived all his life in Pike County with the exception of five years when he resided in Highland County, where he married his second wife, Rebecca Rains, who is still living.  Mr. Penisten filled many local offices and served in the militia five years as First Lieutenant.

Lewis Penisten

Lewis Penisten, also a son of George, Sr., was born in 1809, in what is now Pike County; lived all his life in said county.  He was the father of twelve children, eight boys and four girls, nine of whom are now living, all in the West except Uriah.

Uriah Penisten

Uriah Penisten, third son of Lewis and Elizabeth (Boyles) Penisten, was born in Benton Township, Pike Co., Ohio, Jan. 18, 1836.  His father was also born in Pike County about the year 1809, and after living out a lifetime of usefulness died at fifty-two years of age.  His widow still survives him.  Our subject assisted his father on the farm until attaining his majority.  The two years following he engaged with his cousin at farming.  At the close of the first year he married Elizabeth Henry, by whom he had three children, two daughters and one son - Amanda, William Henry and Agnes Alwilda.  Since the year 1877 he has been engaged in the mercantile business.  He located in Waverly in the fall of 1881 where he operates a general store and is also proprietor of the hotel known as the Penisten House, located on Market street.  Mr. Penisten comes of pioneer stock and is one of the substantial and enterprising business men of Waverly.  He is a member of the Idaho Lodge, No. 620, I.O.O.F.; was also one of the charter members.

(Mustard) Humphreys, of Brington.  They have five children - Clarence E., John W., Charles R., F. Grace, and Leroy H.  Mrs. Pennisten belongs to the Methodist Episcopal church.  Our subject's father, William Pennisten, was born in Pike County and was married to Mary Ann E. George Penisten, Jr., was born in Pike County, June 8, 1825, a son of Joseph and Jerusha (Lunbeck) Penisten, his father a native of Kentucky and his mother of Ohio.  His mother died July 17, 1830, aged thirty years, leaving six children.  His father afterward married Sarah Ann Hill, by whom he had nine children.  He was magistrate for thirty years, and an officer in the State militia for many years.  He died May 2, 1866, at the age of seventy years, six months, twenty seven days.  George Penisten was married March 26, 1846, to Amanda Melvina Cawgill, a native of Virginia, who was born Feb. 10, 1827.  They have had ten children - Mary J., born Jan. 2, 1847; Nancy J. (deceased), born Feb. 11, 1849; Juliett (deceased), born Oct. 4, 1851; Ann Eliza., born March 25, 1854; William A., born Nov. 2, 1856; Daniel (deceased), born March 11, 1859; Harriet E., born March 30, 1860; Georgiana, born June 1, 1863; Flora Gale, born Sept. 11, 1866, and Virginia Maie, born April 28, 1869.

Each of these sketches will definitely give me more information to research and try to tie all of these various PENISTEN lines together.  Particularly the first three sketches appear closely related to the lines that came to Madison County, Indiana.

Nathan Thomas Beals Obituary & Funeral Notice (1915)

Thanks to the help of the sexton at the Cicero Cemetery, I had a date to search for the obituary of Nathan Thomas BEALS.  I headed out Tuesday evening after work and visited the Hamilton East Public Library in Noblesville.  I was pleased to discover that they had copies of the Noblesville Ledger going back to the time period I needed, February of 1915.

Paydirt was struck with the February 15, 1915 edition of the Noblesville, Ledger.  There on page 1 was the obituary of my 3GGF, Nathan Thomas BEALS, or N.T. as he was apparently known.

N.T. BEALS DIED IN ARKANSAS

Remains Brought To This County And Will Be Buried At Cicero

FORMERLY LIVED AROUND HERE

Fifty-Nine Years of Age and Spent Practically All of His Life in This Locality - Father at Sheridan.

Charles Lambertson, of Cicero, received a telegram, Saturday night, from Leola, Ark., announcing the death of his father-in-law, Nathan T. Beals.  The remains passed through Noblesville, Monday, enroute to Cicero, where the funeral will occur on Tuesday.

His death was a surprise to relatives in this county, although it was known that he had not enjoyed good health for several months.
He was fifty-nine years of age and is survived by a widow and two children - Mrs. Charles Lambertson, of Cicero, and Mrs. Nellie Beals Stober, of Huntington.  He was a son of John Beals, now nearly ninety years of age and who is living with his daughter, Mrs. Joel Hill, at Sheridan.  He was a brother of Mrs. Calvin Sturdevant, an uncle of Dr. J.D., Walter and Elmer Sturdevant, of this city, and a brother of Frank Beals, formerly City Attorney, but now a resident of West Virginia.

He lived in this county all his life until about ten years ago, when he went to Arkansas to engage in the sawmill and lumber business with Ed and Luther Hinshaw.  For many years he was a resident of Cicero.  At one time, he was interested in a hardware store there, but later spent most of his time traveling for a wholesale hardware firm.

Relatives here had known for a few weeks that he had suffered some from malaria fever and nervous trouble and recently had a slight stroke of paralysis.  It is presumed that the latter affliction hastened his death.

Funeral at the M.E. church in Cicero, at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon.  Rev. Amos Carson officiating.  Interment in the Cicero cemetery.

The February 17, 1915 edition of the Ledger had a notice of his funeral, which shed a little more light on when he was in Arkansas.

SERVICES HELD FOR N.T. BEALS

Conducted by Rev. Amos Carson, Assisted by Rev. W.H. Jenkin - Aged Father Present

The funeral services for Nathan T. Beals were held at Cicero, Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, at the M.E. church.  Rev. Amos Carson, assisted by Rev. W.H. Jenkin, the pastor of the church, conducted the services.  Mr. Beals was a member of the Friends church, of which Rev. Mr. Carson is a minister.

The church was well filled with relatives and friends, and the Masonic and Knights of Pythias orders were well represented at the church and in the procession to the cemetery, where the ceremonies were conducted.

The music was by a quartet composed of Miss Nellie Mendenhall, Mrs. Monte Meek, M.M. Hartley and Clyde Nichols.

The father, Capt. John Beals, although very feeble, was able to be present, and J.F. Beals, a brother, came from his home in West Virginia.  The words of Rev. Mr. Carson were based on the saying of Jesus to His disciples, that it was necessary that He should go away, but that he would send a Comforter.  The speaker had known the family and his words of sympathy were fitting and appropriate.  He drew lessons from the text for the benefit of all.

The obituary as read showed that Mr. Beals had been in business at Westfield and Cicero, before going to Arkansas, about five years ago, and that his birth place was at Grassy Branch, on the Beals farm, near Westfield.  Rev. Mr. Carson spoke of his good qualities, and the concourse of people at his funeral services showed that he was a man who made friends.

------

I've already contacted the Grant County, Arkansas museum, hoping that they would have information on the business ventures of N.T. Beals and the Hinshaws.  Ed and Luther Hinshaw were first cousins of N.T. Beals.

I will need to seek a copy of his death certificate to verify the exact date and cause of death, but preliminary data from this obituary would place his death on Saturday, February 13, 1915 in Leola, Grant County, Arkansas.  Burial was three days later on February 16, 1915 in Cicero Cemetery, Cicero, Hamilton County, Indiana.

Today I sourced the data for the Joel Thornburgh Hill family found in the 1900 census of Hamilton Co., and the 1910 census of Boone Co., IN. Joel married my maternal 3rd-great grandaunt Sarah Beals.

In the 1910 census, only son Ludovic was living with them.
