Joseph Wright's land : Madison County, Indiana

Atlas and Directory of Madison County, Indiana, American Atlas Co., Cleveland, Ohio, 1901,

Here is a section of the plat map of Madison County, Indiana showing Section 25 where Joseph Wright had his land.  You can see by this representation that his land was located on both sides of the railroad tracks.

You can see that he had 79 acres on one side and a 39 acre piece on the other.  This atlas was from 1901 and the land that he bought from his dad in 1867 was only 80 acres, so the section to the west had been added on to by later purchases.

Notice that there was also a 40 acre parcel next to this owned by Jas. & Joseph Wright - this was Joseph's son, James.  Next door you will also find land owned by William Hicks, who was James' father-in-law.

The homestead that stood there was torn down in the late 1980s.

The farmhouse that I grew up in was located on this map in Section 36 on the parcel that was owned by Margaret Starr.  The land in Section 36 didn't come into Wright hands until approx. 1915 or so.  Will have more on that later.

A masquerade party was enjoyed by a number of friends Friday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Manring on East Eleventh street.  At 9 o'clock all marks were removed.  Miss Elsie McCord won the first prize.  Virgil Wright second and Kenneth Stoughton third prize.  Games and contents were followed by a Hallowe'en luncheon.  The home was beautifully decorated in black and yellow crepe ribbons, candles, pumpkins and yellow crysanthemums.  Attending were the Misses Elsie McCord, Hazel Foland, Mablel Wright, Mary Manring, Olivia Wright, Sarah Damens, Frances Wright, and Charley Sexton, George Harcastle, William Knopp, Kenneth Stoughton, Kenneth Allen and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Lawler, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Frazier, Mrs. Mary Danils, Mrs. McDonald, Mrs. Ada Stroughton and Clarence Smith, of Muncie.

My maternal great-grandfather, Virgil Lee Wright (1894-1972) and great-grandmother, Edna Muriel (Pierce) Wright (1897-1968), attended this Halloween party shortly after their marriage with a number of friends and relatives.  I wonder what customer grandpa Virgil wore to win second prize?

Other relatives include Mabel Wright, daughter of James and  Clara (Hicks) Wright, Virgil's first cousin, as well as her other sisters Olivia and Frances Wright.  Frances Wright's future husband Charles Sexton was also in attendance.

The Fred Wright who attended the party was the son of Charles and Bertha (Leonard) Wright, Virgil's aunt and uncle.

So at this one party were several of my 2nd-great grandfather's neighbors as well as his first cousins.

Tombstone Tuesday: Joseph W. and Rebecca Ann (Heaton) Wright

My maternal 3rd-great grandparents, Joseph W. and Rebecca Ann (HEATON) WRIGHT, are buried in the I.O.O.F. cemetery in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana.

Joseph was born April 1838 in Brown County, Ohio, the son of John and Anna (WARDLOW) WRIGHT.

Rebecca was born 1841 in Brown County, Ohio, the daughter of James R. and Elizabeth (JACOBS) HEATON.

Joseph and Rebecca were married November 1, 1857 in Schuyler County, Missouri. There was a mass migration of several related families out of Brown County, Ohio to Schuyler County, Missouri in the late 1850s. Joseph and Rebecca soon returned to Brown County, as they were enumerated in the 1860 census there.

Joseph and his family moved to Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana in the mid-1860s where they were engaged in farming.

Rebecca died on March 25, 1890 in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana. After her death, Joseph remarried to Dorothy PALMER on April 11, 1891 in Madison County, Indiana. Joseph died on September 16, 1919 in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana.

Family Milestones : November 2nd

My paternal great-great grandfather, William P. WEHRLY, was born on this date back in 1845 in Preble County, Ohio, the son of Johannes (John S.) and Barbara (PETRY) WEHRLY. William was the youngest of the family of nine children. Not too long after he was born the family moved across the state line into Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana. William was a man of many talents - his occupations were listed as farmer, mortician and sawmiller. He served in the Civil War in Company I, 130th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. After the war, he married Olive Jane SMITH on August 4, 1866 in Jay County, Indiana. They lived out their lives on the farm in Madison Township where William died on June 16, 1909. He is buried in the Salamonia Cemetery there.

My maternal great-great granduncle, James WRIGHT, married Clara B. HICKS on this date back in 1895 in Madison County, Indiana. James was the son of Joseph W. and Rebecca Ann (HEATON) WRIGHT and the younger brother of my John William WRIGHT. James was the first member of the Wright family to be born in Madison County, Indiana after the move from Brown County, Ohio, being born in 1868. James was a farmer of Monroe Township, living out his entire life there. He died October 14, 1936 in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana and is buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery there.

My paternal 3rd-great granduncle, Stephen M. YOUNG, married Mary WOODRUFF on this date back in 1847. My data is sketchy on this event, but it probably occurred in Shelby County, Ohio. Stephen was the youngest son of Phillip and Nancy Ann (McLANE) YOUNG, the younger brother of my Nancy YOUNG. Stephen had been born April 27, 1845 and died January 25, 1903. More research in the census records needs to be done to further research his life.

No Will? No Problem...if you can find a deed

While researching at the Madison County, Indiana Recorder's office, I came across this deed book record that took place shortly after my maternal 3rd great-grandfather, Joseph WRIGHT died in 1919.

I had previously attempted to obtain a copy of his will in Madison County and was told that he did not leave a will. Knowing when he died, I began searching the deed books for the time period shortly after his death and bingo! There was a deed from his widow listing all of his heirs, transferring land to one heir.

My commission expires November 26, 1921.

Joseph WRIGHT had no children with his second wife, Dorothy PALMER, whom he married on April 11, 1891 in Madison County, Indiana. By his first wife, Rebecca HEATON, whom he married November 1, 1857 in Schuyler County, Missouri, he had the following children:

i. Mary WRIGHT (1858-1910) married Frank KIRK; children Ethel, Earl and Harry are listed as heirs
ii. John WRIGHT (1860-1945) married Ellen KING; widower whose wife had died in 1913, listed as heir
ii. Elizabeth WRIGHT (1863-1882) married Wiliiam Alpha JONES; their daughter Myrtle listed as heir
iii. Anna WRIGHT (1864-1914) married Albert VINSON; left no surviving heirs
iv. James WRIGHT (1868-1936) married Clara HICKS; was the grantee in the deed
v. Charles WRIGHT (1870-1967) married Bertha LEONARD; listed as heir
vi. Daisy WRIGHT (1873-aft1930) married Thomas FOX; listed as heir
vii. Edward WRIGHT (1875-1960) married Martha STARR; listed as heir
viii. Jesse WRIGHT (1878-1919) married Hazel O'BRYANT; left no surviving heirs

Though I knew the names of Joseph's children, it was interesting to find his grandchildren listed as heirs and to know that they were still living in Madison County, at least in 1919. Joseph's son Edward had moved to Whitley County, a fact I knew and which was confirmed by the 1920 census.

Although it was several years since I had originally written to the courthouse asking for a copy of the will, I'm glad that I was finally able to find some records that recorded the settlement of Joseph's estate.

Basil McDermitt household - Madison Co., IN

The Basil McDERMITT household was enumerated in the 1930 census of Monroe Twp., Madison Co., IN under the surname McDERMOTT. Basil was married to Helen WRIGHT, daughter of James and Clara (HICKS) WRIGHT, and my 1st cousin three times removed. They also were my neighbors when I was growing up, and I remember them fondly. Their house was right across from ours, which in the 1930 census was where my great-grandfather, Virgil Wright was residing.

Basil was a 27 year old farmer who was renting his home. Helen was a housewife, aged 21 years old. Both had been born in Indiana, as were their parents. They had apparently been married for 5 years, as Helen was 16 when she was married. Living with them was their son, Basil Jr., aged 4 years and 8 months old.

Basil O. McDERMITT b. ca. 1903 Boone Twp., Madison Co., IN., d. August 21, 1987 Anderson, Madison Co., IN., m. ca. 1925 to Helen WRIGHT, daughter of James and Clara (HICKS) WRIGHT. Helen b. Mary Hicks household - 1900 Madison Co., IN

Today I sourced the Mary Hicks household in the 1900 census of Madison Co., IN in the town of Orestes. Mary Jane King was my 2nd-great grandaunt, the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Shaw) King.

Mary Jane was the widow of Leroy Young, and had apparently married to someone named Hicks between 1893 when Leroy died and the 1900 census. Mary was listed as the head of household in the 1900 census, living next door to her son Daniel Young, as well as other relatives (King, Etchison, etc.). Mary was the mother of 3 children with only 2 living by the 1900 census.
