Exploratory Data Analysis : David Sherrick (1823-1914)

David Sherrick (1823-1914) was my paternal 3rd-great grandfather.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about him.

1. Vital Records

David was born October 18th or 19th, 1823 in York County, Pennsylvania1,2.  His death certificate states the 19th, biographical sketch states the 18th.

     1.1. Birth Certificate

I have not located a birth record for David yet.  Will continue to search sources such as FamilySearch in hopes of locating a church record.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If David's birth was mentioned in a newspaper, I'm not aware of it.  Will search contemporary newspapers of the time period to see if any mention was made.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I'm not aware of any surviving Bible records of the Sherrick family that mentions David.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one can be located.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

I am not aware of any baptismal record for David, nor am I aware of the church affiliation at this time.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no indication that David was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

David married Susan Jacobs on March 23, 1843 in Wayne County, Ohio3.  His surname was spelled Sherich in the record.

David married Amy Byers sometime between 1864 (Susan's death) and 1870 (census), likely in Medina County, Ohio.  I have not been successful in locating the record yet.  Will continue to search in hopes of locating.

David married Margaret Zimmerman on April 29 1884 in Seneca County, Ohio4.  Margaret was the widow of Anthony David Rosenberger and the daughter of Barney Zimmerman.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

I've not yet searched available newspapers of the time period to see if mention was made of David's three marriages.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

I've not yet searched available newspapers of the time to see if mention was made of any anniversary celebrations.  David's marriage to Margaret was the only one that made it to the 25th wedding anniversary mark.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

Although there was no indication that David was ever divorced, a thorough search of local court records would need to be made to be sure.

     1.3. Death Certificate

David died September 30, 1914 in Ashland, Ashland County, Ohio5,6, following a fracture of the femur.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

David's obituary appeared in the October 7, 1914 edition of the Ashland Ohio Press6.

I need to make this the subject of a future blog post.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

I will need to search the local historical society records to see if they have any mention of funeral home records that might have handled David's arrangements.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

David's tombstone in the Ashland Cemetery in Ashland, Ohio7, has been photographed.   A link to his memorial page at FindAGrave is located here.
