Itinerant Farmer, George Washington Haley (1840-1892), 52 Ancestors # 17

George Washington Haley tombstone
Mt. Zion Cemetery
Jay County, Indiana

The 17th Ancestor in my 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks project is my paternal great-great grandfather, George Washington Haley (1840-1892).  George is number 20 on my Ahnentafel list, and previously I've written about the details of his life in an Exploratory Analysis post.

I am descended through :
* his son, # 10 Eli Weldon Haley (1866-1957), married # 11 Cora Belle Metzner (1868-1955), in 1888.
* their daughter, # 5 Ruth Pauline Haley (1911-1990), married # 4 Ord Wehrly LeMaster (1906-1971) in 1932 - my grandparents.
George was born May 16, 1840 in Hardin County, Ohio1,2, the son of George J. and Rachel H. (Gary) Haley.  His father was a minister in the Evangelical Association, and the family moved around a bit.  By the time of the 1850 census, George was a ten year old student in Jackson Township, Sandusky County, Ohio3.  At the recording of the 1860 census, George was a 20 year farmer in Claridon Township, Marion County, Ohio4.

Sometime around 1862, George moved to Ashland County, Ohio, where he married Mary Jane Sherrick on October 14, 18621.  I am not aware of any military service during the Civil War for George, and none is alluded to by his obituary or the biographical sketches.

George is one of my relatives who moved around a lot and I need to do more research in land records.  Between 1863 and 1869 the family was living in Seneca County, Ohio, but by the 1870 census they were all enumerated in Harrisville Township, Medina County, Ohio5.  During this census, it was recorded that George was a U.S. citizen whose father was of foreign birth and his real estate was valued at $2730.

The family of George and Mary grew to six children by the time of the 1880 census, when George was farming in Liberty Township, Seneca County, Ohio6.  The children were Andrew Frank (1864), Eli Weldon (1866), George David Ellsworth (1868), Rachel Emma Pernina (1869), Charles Wesley (1872) and Carrie Mae (1877).  Sometime before 1884, the family moved to Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana were the seventh child, daughter Ora was born.

George died December 3, 1892 and is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery in Jay County, Indiana2,7.  At the time of his death he was only 52 years old.  I located his estate records at the Jay County Historical Society, and discovered he had an estate of less than $500.

George W. Haley estate packet No 1277 Box 86
Jay County, Indiana
The documents that make up this estate packet will be the subject of a future post.  Basically, the widow had to declare that the estate of personal and real property was less than $500.  The actual inventory showed a total value of $458.75.  Albert Graves and Henry Muller were appointed to be appraisers of the estate.  Albert was later George and Mary's son-in-law, marrying daughter Carrie.

According to his obituary, George had been sick for about one year before he died.  George is one of my ancestors that I need to learn more about, even a picture of what he looks like is unknown to me at this point.

Exploratory Data Analysis : David Sherrick (1823-1914)

David Sherrick (1823-1914) was my paternal 3rd-great grandfather.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about him.

1. Vital Records

I have not located a birth record for David yet.  Will continue to search sources such as FamilySearch in hopes of locating a church record.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If David's birth was mentioned in a newspaper, I'm not aware of it.  Will search contemporary newspapers of the time period to see if any mention was made.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I'm not aware of any surviving Bible records of the Sherrick family that mentions David.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one can be located.

I am not aware of any baptismal record for David, nor am I aware of the church affiliation at this time.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

Although there was no indication that David was ever divorced, a thorough search of local court records would need to be made to be sure.

FindAGrave Success : Robert E. Kimble (1841-1918)

Thanks to a FindAGrave contributor, I now have a photograph of the tombstone of my paternal step-2nd great-grandfather, Robert E. Kimble (1841-1918).  Robert is buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio.

This marker shows Robert and his first wife, Catherine.  Robert married secondly to my widowed 2nd-great grandmother, Mary Jane (Sherrick) Haley on May 8, 1897 in Jay County, Indiana.

This record clears up some confusion as to whether or not his middle initial was 'N.' or 'E.'.  Handwriting and other records made it hard to decipher.

It appears that Robert and Catherine's son, John Wesley Kimble is buried in the same cemetery.

Cousin bait : Calmbach

A cousin bait posting on the Calmbach line brought me an email from cousin Linda, who descends from Jacob, brother of my Magdalena Calmbach (1640-1722).  Jacob and Magdalena were the children of Hans Calmbach and wife Christena.

Linda's line is :

Jacob Calmbach (1640) and Maria Christina (1614)
Michael Kalmbach (1672) and Maria Braun (1672)
Jakobus Kalmbach (1699) and Katharina Seeger (1723)
Jacob Kalmbach (1750) and Eva Maria Kalmbach (1750)
Jacob Kalmbach (1790) and Dorothea Vogel (1794)
Christian Kalmbach (1815) and Anna Barbara Schlenker (1816)
Friedrich Kalmbach (1839) and Christine Keller (1844)
Matthias Kalmbach (1874) and Katharina Sauter (1880)
Emanuel Kalmbach (1902) and Katharina Ruff (1905)

While my line is:

Magdalena Calmbach (1640) and Anton Schwartz (1637)
Magdalena Schwartz (1676) and Martin ________
Maria Schwartz (1713) and Jacob Stickel (1708)
Jacob Stickel (1742) and Anna Maria ________ (1742)
Mary Stickel (1768) and Abraham Byers (1771)

Barbara Byers (1798) and David Jacobs (1796)
Susan Jacobs (1825) and David Sherrick (1823)

Eli Weldon Haley (1866) and Cora Belle Metzner (1868)
Ruth Pauline Haley (1911) and Ord Wehrly LeMaster (1906)

This line is so far removed from me and I haven't done any original research, so I do not know how accurate it is.  The family was from the Egenhausen, Würrtemberg area.  Very little is sourced, so anyone with a connection or corrections, please respond.

Marriage solemnized by
R. Dubs
Minister of the Gospel

Dated at Wayne Twp. Jay Co., Ind this 21st day of July 1888.

This record of the marriage of Eli Weldon Haley (1866-1957) and Cora Belle Metzner (1868-1955) was located at the Jay County Historical Society in Portland, Indiana.

These were my paternal great-grandparents.  Previously, I had located a copy of the marriage license, but not the return at the courthouse.

Though I don't have an exact location for the marriage, I speculate that it took place at the home of the bride.  The Metzner family were residents of Wayne Township, Jay County, Indiana.

Witnesses listed to the marriage were the father of the groom, George W. Haley, and the father of the bride, John A. Metzner.  I do not know of any connection with the minister, R. Dubs.

The above death certificate is of my paternal 2nd-great grandfather, Eli Weldon Haley (1866-1957).  I obtained this certificate on my recent research trip into Jay County.

Facts that I already knew included the date of death and the place.  Though the certificate states the death address as simply Jay County, I know that he was living in Madison Township at the time, near Salamonia.  Interestingly, the residence address of Rural Route 3 Fort Recovery, Ohio shows how close this area is to the Ohio line.

Eli was widowed, his wife Cora Belle (Metzner) Haley having died in 1955.  His father is listed as George W. Haley and mother as Mary Jane Haley, with the notation of (Sherrick) as her maiden name.  This corresponds to facts I already knew about the family.  No places of birth are listed for his parents.

His burial date was listed as July 16, 1957 at Mt. Zion cemetery.  The funeral home was listed as the Baird funeral home of Portland.

The physician of record was S.M. Hammond, M.D.  The cause of death was not listed on this certificate.  The health department would not release the information.  Peeking over the books, I could see that the cause was heart related.

Exploratory Data Analysis Through 2x-Great Grandparents

It took me longer than I had hoped, but I'm finally done with the initial series of Exploratory Data Analysis posts on my 2x-great grandparents.  Now it will be time to add all of the research to-do items to my list and begin to fill in the blanks.  Once that is completed, I will work on using the same format for my great-aunts and uncles before moving on to my 3x-great grandparents, etc.

I did learn quite a bit about some of the assumptions I had made and the missing facts ("holes") in my database.  After doing this family history gathering for so many years, it was surprising that there were things I didn't have documented about my 2x-great grandparents.  Of course, with my organizational skills, I may discover that I already had the information.

Here are the links to the posts about the exploratory data analysis posts for my 2x-great grandparents:
