Shaky Leaves : Anna L. (Wright) Vinson (1864-1914)

Anna L. (Wright) Vinson (1864-1914) was my maternal 2nd-great grandaunt, the daughter of Joseph and Rebecca (Heaton) Wright.  She was married to Albert Morris "Ab" Vinson (1858-1921).  Ancestry.com is currently showing 4 hints for her in my LeMaster and Allied Families Member Tree.

One of the hints is a link to Anna's memorial page at the FindAGrave website, which I created and maintain.  Anna is buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana.

In the 1910 census, Anna was living in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana with her husband Albert, who was a deputy sheriff.  Also in the household was Anna's brother, Jesse, and a boarder, Addie Hughs, who was laid off from the paper mill.

In the 1880 census, Anna was living in the Joseph Wright household in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana as a 16 year old student.

While neither of these 'hints' were new facts to my database, I did link them to Anna's record in the Ancestry Member Tree and downloaded copies of the images so I can add to my RootsMagic database.

In the database, Indiana Deaths, 1882-1920, which contains data from the WPA index, the following information was found:

Name:Anna L. Vinson
Date:6 Jun 1914
Location:Alexandria
Age:50 Yr
Gender:Female
Race:White
Source Location:City/County Health Office, Anderson or City Health Office, Elwood/Alexandria
Source notes:The source of this record is the book 2CH-8 on page 37 within the series produced by the Indiana Works Progress Administration.

This matches the death date I have for Anna, and provides the book and page number so I can obtain a copy of her death certificate.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for a future research trip.

If you are related or have any additional information or corrections, I'd love to hear from you.

Tombstone Tuesday: Joseph W. and Rebecca Ann (Heaton) Wright

My maternal 3rd-great grandparents, Joseph W. and Rebecca Ann (HEATON) WRIGHT, are buried in the I.O.O.F. cemetery in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana.

Joseph was born April 1838 in Brown County, Ohio, the son of John and Anna (WARDLOW) WRIGHT.

Rebecca was born 1841 in Brown County, Ohio, the daughter of James R. and Elizabeth (JACOBS) HEATON.

Joseph and Rebecca were married November 1, 1857 in Schuyler County, Missouri. There was a mass migration of several related families out of Brown County, Ohio to Schuyler County, Missouri in the late 1850s. Joseph and Rebecca soon returned to Brown County, as they were enumerated in the 1860 census there.

Joseph and his family moved to Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana in the mid-1860s where they were engaged in farming.

Rebecca died on March 25, 1890 in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana. After her death, Joseph remarried to Dorothy PALMER on April 11, 1891 in Madison County, Indiana. Joseph died on September 16, 1919 in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana.

No Will? No Problem...if you can find a deed

While researching at the Madison County, Indiana Recorder's office, I came across this deed book record that took place shortly after my maternal 3rd great-grandfather, Joseph WRIGHT died in 1919.

I had previously attempted to obtain a copy of his will in Madison County and was told that he did not leave a will. Knowing when he died, I began searching the deed books for the time period shortly after his death and bingo! There was a deed from his widow listing all of his heirs, transferring land to one heir.

Madison County, Indiana Deed Book 21, page 378

Day, her husband, each of said grantors being over the age of 21 years, all being of Madison County, State of Indiana, other than said Edward E. Wright and Martha J. Wright, they being of Whitley County, State of Indiana, these grantors together with the grantee herein including all the heirs at law of said Joseph Wright, deceased, late of Madison County, State of Indiana, CONVEY AND WARRANT TO James Wright, of Madison County, State of Indiana, for and in consideration of one thousand seven hundred fifty dollars, the following described real estate in Madison County, State of Indiana, to-wit: The undivided one-fourth (1/4) of the north west quarter of the south west quarter of section 25, township 21 north, range 7 east.

My commission expires November 26, 1921.

Joseph WRIGHT had no children with his second wife, Dorothy PALMER, whom he married on April 11, 1891 in Madison County, Indiana. By his first wife, Rebecca HEATON, whom he married November 1, 1857 in Schuyler County, Missouri, he had the following children:

i. Mary WRIGHT (1858-1910) married Frank KIRK; children Ethel, Earl and Harry are listed as heirs
ii. John WRIGHT (1860-1945) married Ellen KING; widower whose wife had died in 1913, listed as heir
ii. Elizabeth WRIGHT (1863-1882) married Wiliiam Alpha JONES; their daughter Myrtle listed as heir
iii. Anna WRIGHT (1864-1914) married Albert VINSON; left no surviving heirs
iv. James WRIGHT (1868-1936) married Clara HICKS; was the grantee in the deed
v. Charles WRIGHT (1870-1967) married Bertha LEONARD; listed as heir
vi. Daisy WRIGHT (1873-aft1930) married Thomas FOX; listed as heir
vii. Edward WRIGHT (1875-1960) married Martha STARR; listed as heir
viii. Jesse WRIGHT (1878-1919) married Hazel O'BRYANT; left no surviving heirs

Though I knew the names of Joseph's children, it was interesting to find his grandchildren listed as heirs and to know that they were still living in Madison County, at least in 1919. Joseph's son Edward had moved to Whitley County, a fact I knew and which was confirmed by the 1920 census.

Although it was several years since I had originally written to the courthouse asking for a copy of the will, I'm glad that I was finally able to find some records that recorded the settlement of Joseph's estate.

Obituary: Albert M. Vinson (1858-1921)

Source: Alexandria Times-Tribune, Alexandria, Indiana, October 26, 1921, page 1.

Sudden Death Takes Ab Vinson at Early Hour

Was on Duty as Patrolman Yesterday and Last Night; Funeral Friday

A.M. Vinson, age 63 years, 2 months and 26 days, passed away at his home, 702 South Harrison street, at 12:30 this morning. His death was very sudden and came within a very few minutes after he had entered his home, having left his duties as patrolman at midnight. It was only three months ago that he was appointed as one of the city's police officers, and during that time he served faithfully and well, although handicapped by a siege of illness that lasted some time and from which he had but recently recovered.

Born in This County.

A.M., "Ab" as he was more generally known, Vinson, was born in Madison county, July 3, 1858. He was the son of the late James and Elizabeth Vinson. He lived on his farm, 3 miles north of Alexandria until about 18 years ago, when he moved to this city. He became engaged in the implement business and for several years was in partnership with Roe Jones in the building now occupied by the Alexandria Motor Sales Co. He was also deputy sheriff of Madison county during the four years incumbency of the sheriff's office by Jack Mountain.

Although weak from the effects of a three weeks' illness, Mr. Vinson insisted upon discharging his duties as patrolman. He was on duty last night as usual until 12:15 a.m., leaving for his home after his shift had expired. He went to his room, and shortly after entering Mrs. Vinson, hearing an unusual sound which had awakened her, went into the room where Mr. Vinson sat and found him lifeless. The angle of death had swooned down on the husband without a word of warning.

A Good Citizen

Deceased was a splendid man, a good citizen and one that was in every way worthy of the respect, confidence and esteem of his fellowmen. He took his responsibilities as patrolman seriously, and accepted the place because he felt it his duty to do so and not because he wanted the place. He was conscientious in the discharge of this duties and showed no favoritism. He did his duty as God gave him the light to see it. His death comes at a time when Alexandria needed his services and his cool and unprejudiced judgment.

Mr. Vinson is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nettie Vinson, one stepson, George B. Epperson, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. F.O. Karll, both of Barraboo, Wis. Also two brothers, Joshua E. Vinson, of this city, and Edward Vinson, of South Bend.

Deceased was a member of Necessity Lodge No. 222, I.O.O.F. and the Encampment; also of Meshingomisha Tribe No. 110, Red Men.

[Note: Albert was my maternal 2nd-great granduncle, having been married 1st to Anna L. Wright (1864-1914), daughter of Joseph and Rebecca (Heaton) Wright.]

They counted him twice

My maternal 2nd-great granduncle, Jesse WRIGHT, was counted twice in the 1910 census of Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana. Jesse (1878-1919) was the son of Joseph and Rebecca (Heaton) Wright.

On the April 15, 1910 return, Jesse was living in the Virgil S. DAY household as a roomer. Jesse was listed as male, aged 32, single, born in Indiana and both parents born in Indiana. His occupation was listed as a postal clerk for the railroad, and he could read and write.

Virgil S. DAY was the husband of Jesse's niece, Myrtle M. (Jones) DAY. Myrtle was the daughter of William Alpha and Elizabeth (Wright) Jones.

On the April 22, 1910 return, Jesse was living in the Albert VINSON household as a boarder. Jesse was listed as a male, age 32, born in Indiana with father born Ohio and mother born in Indiana. His occupation was listed as clerk in mail dept., and he could read and write.

Albert VINSON was the husband of Jesse's sister, Anna L. (Wright) VINSON.

Though I'm sure he's not the only member of my family who has been counted twice in the census, at least in Monroe Township in 1910, the count is off by at least one.

MRS. A.M. VINSON DIED SATURDAY EVE

Six Months Illness from Complications of Diseases Results in Death.

Just as the shades of night were beginning to fall Saturday evening, Mrs. Anna L. Vinson, age 50 year, a well known and respected resident of Alexandria, passed to her reward after a lingering illness from a complication of diseases that had kept her confined to her bed for the past six months. For several days in the past week the Vinson home at 702 South Harrison street had been visited by relatives constantly as the death of Mrs. Vinson was expected at almost any moment. The funeral service will be conducted from the First Christian church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and burial will take place in the Odd Fellow cemetery. Rev. George Winfrey will have charge of the service and the Rev. Wm. G. Smith, of Edinburgh, a former pastor of the Christian church here, and Rev. Whitecotton, of Anderson, will assist.

Mrs. Anna Vinson was born in the State of Ohio and at an early age moved to Madison county. She was married to A.M. Vinson, an Alexandria implement and automobile dealer. Mr. and Mrs. Vinson resided on a farm three miles north of Alexandria for a number of years, finally moving to this city where Mr. Vinson engaged in business. After her removal to this city Mrs. Vinson became active in church and social circles.

Besides the husband Mrs. Vinson is survived by her father, Joseph Wright, south of the city, and one sister, Mrs. Thomas Fox, of Pendleton, and five brothers, James, Edward, John, Charles White [sic] of this city, and Jesse Wright, of Anderson.
