Exploratory Data Analysis : Albert Moulton (1819-1864)

Albert Moulton (1819-1864) is my paternal 3rd-great grandfather.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about him.

1. Vital Records

Albert was born May 10, 1819 in Rutland County, Vermont, according to my database.  The record found in the 1860 census (if this is the correct Albert) states he was 31 years old born in Vermont.

     1.1. Birth Certificate

I have not been able to locate a birth record for Albert in the vital records of Vermont at FamilySearch.  I have found records for other members of the family.  Will continue to search to see if I can locate the record.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If Albert's birth was mentioned in a newspaper, I have not located it.  Will need to check with the state and local archives to see if they have newspapers of the time period.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am not aware of any surviving Moulton family Bible that mentions Albert.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one can be located.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

I am not aware of any baptismal record for Albert.  I am not aware of the church affiliation of the Moulton family at this time.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no indication that Albert was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

Albert married Emeline Philbrick on August 30, 1847 in Knox County, Ohio1.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

I have not yet searched available newspapers of the time period to see if mention was made of Albert and Emeline's nuptials are mentioned.  Will add that to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

I have not yet searched available newspapers of the time period for mention of an anniversary celebration.  Albert is believed to have died in 1864, possibly in California.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

I have not yet searched local court records for a divorce record for Albert and Emeline.  According to a biographical sketch for Clara Moulton, her father went to California during the Gold Rush and disappeared.

     1.3. Death Certificate

Albert died May 18, 1864, according to my database.  This is an undocumented source.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Once I can verify the exact date of death, I will be able to search available newspapers in the archives to see if there is mention of Albert's death.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Until I have an exact date and place of death, I will be unable to research funeral home records for additional information on his death.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Once I can locate the precise location of his death and burial, I will be able to obtain a photograph of Albert's tombstone.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1860 Federal Census

I have not yet been able to locate a census record in the 1860 census that matches the little information I know about Albert that gives me any confidence it is a match.  Will continue to search available records to test various theories.

          2.1.2. 1850 Federal Census

There is an Albert Moulton enumerated on October 29, 1850 in Placerville, El Dorado County, California2, as Albert Moulton, age 31, male, miner, born in Vermont.  He was a cash laborer working for $2 per day.
This Albert fits the "family legend" that Emeline's husband left for California and disappeared during the Gold Rush, but I have no concrete proof that this is the same man.

     2.2. State Census Records

No state census records for Ohio are known to exist.

There is an Albert W. Moulton in California state census records in California, but he does not appear to be the same man as found in the 1860 census record above.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet examined these types of records to see what light they might shed on the Moulton family.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

I have not yet located any military draft (Civil War) records for Albert Moulton that are a match.

     3.2. Pension Records

I have not located any pension records that are a match for Albert.

     3.3. Service Records

I have not yet located any military service records for Albert Moulton that are a match.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Knox and Licking Counties, Ohio to see what records might mention Albert.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Plat maps of Knox and Licking Counties, Ohio need to be searched to see what information can be gleaned that will be relevant to my research.

5. Supplemental Records

Supplemental records to search for Albert include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

According to a biographical sketch of daughter, Clara3, her father went from his home in Licking County, Ohio to California during the Gold Rush excitement and died there.  This biographical sketch gives her father's name as Charles.  I believe this to be an error - as Charles was the name of Albert's brother - both were children of Selah and Lydia (Finel) Moulton, who came with their families from Rutland County, Vermont to Licking County, Ohio in the early 1830s.  More research will need to be conducted on this family mystery.

Marriage Record : Albert Moulton to Emeline Philbrick, 1847, Knox County, Ohio

While searching at Familysearch, I located the marriage record of my paternal 3rd-great grandparents, Emeline Philbrick and Albert Moulton on August 30, 1847 in Knox County, Ohio.

"Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-2013," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XD5C-WZ2 : 8 December 2014), Albert Moulton and Emeline Philbrick, 30 Aug 1847; citing Knox, Ohio, United States, reference cn 16, p 43; county courthouses, Ohio; FHL microfilm 378,591.
Emeline was the daughter of Joel Philbrick and Sally Fox and Albert was the son of Selah Moulton and Lydia Finel.

I had previously believe they would have been married in Licking County, Ohio, as that is where both families had been located.  Licking County is just to the south of Knox County.

This find helps update my database but puts a bit of a kink in my family tree, which I will write about shortly.

DNA Relatives : Closest Matches

23andMe's DNA Relatives finder has identified 3 individuals as being between 3rd and 4th cousins.  I've reached out and sent introductions to all of them, so far I'm sharing genomes with two of them.

The first relative, Ed, shares the most DNA with me 1.02% and we connect on two segments.  The locations of his ancestry (Fort Wayne, IN and Jay County, IN) led me to believe I would find a connection to my paternal lines.

Comparison Chromosome Start point  End point Genetic Distance # SNPs
Ed vs Travis LeMaster 1 3000000 42000000 63.8 7637
Ed vs Travis LeMaster 5 1000000 5000000 11.9 1244

The second relative, Bill, shares DNA with me of .70% but we connect on five segments.  Again, the locations listed for his ancestry (Geneva, IN and Ft. Recovery, OH) led me to believe the connection would be on the paternal side.

Comparison Chromosome Start point End point Genetic Distance # SNPs
Bill vs Travis LeMaster 1 201000000 215000000 20.4 3098
Bill vs Travis LeMaster 3 174000000 180000000 7.9 1216
Bill vs Travis LeMaster 13 74000000 85000000 9.1 2047
Bill vs Travis LeMaster 14 43000000 51000000 6 1414
Bill vs Travis LeMaster 19 55000000 59000000 9 844

The third relative has not responded to my request to share genomes, yet.  We share DNA of .58% on four segments.

By comparing Ed's family tree he provided, I quickly discovered a paternal line connection through the Moulton and Finel families. Selah Moulton (b. 1790 Rutland Co., VT d. 1848 Licking Co., OH) and Lydia Finel (b.1796 Rutland Co., VT d. 1869 Licking Co., OH) were my paternal fourth great-grandparents.  Ed and I are fourth cousins once removed.

Looking at Bill's surnames, I recognized a common surname and discovered that we have a paternal line connection through the LeMasters and Chew families.  Luman Walker LeMasters (b. 1842 Shelby Co., OH d. 1931 Jay Co., IN) and Mary Keziah Chew (b. 1847 Burlington Co., NJ d. 1927 Jay Co., IN) were my paternal second great-grandparents.  Bill and I are third cousins.

This is exciting - I've found a couple of fairly close cousins and have reached out to several more.  In fact, my inbox has been flooded with responses to my invites to share genomes.  Now I have to go through them and see if we can start finding the connections.

This DNA testing has re-energized me and inspired me to dig deeper, share more online with my family trees (Ancestry, WorldConnect, etc) and get more family members tested.

Catching Old Shoes : The Dark Side of Cousin Bait

Last year, when I started publishing the cousin bait posts, my hope was that relatives might find the posts through search engines, visit the blog, and make comments on the posts that would lead to further dialogue and sharing of information on mutual relatives.

For the most part, this has happened, and I continue to be blessed by those willing to share.  However, there is a dark side to cousin bait.  Several months ago, I was contacted by someone who didn't like what they saw on my blog and weren't afraid to let me know that I was wrong.  Instead of a great catch, I seem to have caught an old shoe.

I'd like to think I make it clear that the blog is a work-in-progress and I admit up front that my genealogy will contain some errors.  I'm always willing to take correction, but I found the tone of this particular commentator to be a bit over the top:

Dear Sir;
I came across your blog site a few days ago.  I clicked in the surname of Finel.  I came to the following web page: http://tjlgenes.blogspot.ca/2012/07/surname-saturday-finel.html  I found that the person named Ahnentafel had posted several blogs.  Most of the stuff he has right.  However, his posting # 369 is totally wrong.  Edward Finel never married Sarah Green The birth place,  birth date, death place or date let alone a marriage date have never been found.  If Edward married Sarah Green then why did she keep her maiden surname when she married Peter Gibbons?  Yes there are records of Sarah with a young child.  That child shows up as one of the children with the children conceived through the marriage of Peter Green. There are a total of thirteen children in this marriage with Edward Finel included in the whole family.  Peter took the child in but never adopted the child..  My best guess on the marriage of these two people is around 1750.  Their first child, Elizabeth Gibbons) was born 07 Nov. 1752 in Granville, MA.
There may have been records at one time about the original Edward Finel but they have either been lost, misplaced, destroyed by fire or flood  I would welcome any records to prove me wrong or right. Show me the records or sites for them.
To my knowledge, there are only three remaining direct descendents to the original Edward Finel. My cousin is the last remaining living Finel.  When he passes so does that line.  My son and I are from the original line, however, my surname was changed for some reason in the early 1800’s to Fennell.  To date it look like my son will be the last to carry on the line of Finel/Fennell.
There has been write up that the original Edward Finel came from England.  Again, there aren’t any records to back up this statement.  I have thought that he may have come from Ireland. My thinking is he stayed with his own religious and ethnic group as did so many of the early settlers in that period of time.  Again, no records to back up that statement either.
What little I have written in this letter can be easily backed up by the records that are through many reliable sources.
I tried to post a blog to some of the things on that blog site but they never showed up.  I did get an acknowledgement that a moderator would have to go over them. Maybe I am not doing a blog right.  I normally don’t post things on any social media sites.  I just don’t think I want my name connected to a bunch of things that are not consistent.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
At first glance, the gentleman is trying to point out some erroneous information in one of my blog posts, fair enough.  Then, he seems to confuse my blog with some other postings on the internet.  He mentioned facts that I hadn't even posted on this blog. I responded to his email asking for more information, hoping to clarify things. When I wrote him for more information, I received a response that seemed to be more of a tease (as in - not going to share information) and a bit of an accusation that I was somehow a 'name gatherer' who wasn't doing any research.  The email and my response (in parenthesis) is below :

Hi,
Thank you for replying to my letter to you. There will be one web site pasted on this letter that will show at least two postings of Sarah Green being married to Peter Gibbons. It shows that they have twelve children.  I have not found a direct site yet where the complete family has thirteen children, the thirteenth child being Edward Finel.  I will find that info and forward it to you.
[OK, I’ve seen the actual records from the town showing where Sarah Green married Peter Gibbons.  Not just the website link you sent below.  Look forward to seeing the information you can provide.]

You asked me which Edward my cousin and myself are related to. Obviously we are both related to the first Edward. It couldn’t be any other way.
[I only asked to clarify, since we were talking about two separate Edwards.]

My cousin, who wishes to remain on the sidelines, has done more research and longer than I have.  We have been working together for about ten years.  His records are very detailed and have copies of documents to back up his research.
[That’s wonderful, and the whole point of doing research is to share.]

I personally found a relative in our line that to our knowledge nobody else has found.  The info is there for people to find out like I did. To date, we have not published or released any of this info to anybody on line.  Nobody has asked us about this person.  He was easy to find. Neither one of us have ever published our findings on line .  The research we do is a hobby and something for our children to have.  They might want to know where they came from someday.
[That is why most of us do this type of research.]

There are two “gatherers” out there that just harvest names for the sake of doing that.  They do not research anything. I think both my cousin and I were taken in be these two guys when we first started doing this research.  I know I was taken in by one of them.  Their last names are Keener and Koeble. Both of them have in excess of 20,000 names in their history.
[I’m sorry that you feel you were taken in by someone.  Are you accusing me of being a gatherer?  That is not the case.  I am posting what I have ‘warts and all’ hoping that others will correct and add to it.  It’s called sharing.  No one owns a family genealogy or the facts.]

My cousin is very aware of my first letter to you as well as this one.  We will both make comments under the comments that you left on the original letter I sent you.
[Look forward to receiving it.]

You stated that you never mentioned a marriage date of Sarah to Edward, but you did infer that the two of them were married.
[And you have corrected me, sir, by stating it was an error. ]

There are records out there where Sarah was “warned out” in two cities in MA. With those “Warned out’ records it states that she is with a child. These records are easy to find.
[Again, why are you being so vague?  Which towns?  I published what I thought was the correct lineage in order to solicit additions and corrections, not to be brow-beat.]

The two ** are meant to remind me that this info came from a microfilm (unfortunately I forgot to write this number down before I sent the films back) I got from the LDS Churches family history center.
To date we are waiting for some letters to arrive from the European Continent that my have some bearing of where the first Edward came from.
[Well, if the 1st Edward isn’t related to the 2nd Edward (b. 1748), do you know his ancestry?]

Here is the web site page that will show the marriage of Sarah and Peter. If you click on her name, it will open up and there is a spot that says “show children”.  Click on that and it will show the twelve children from that marriage.  Again it will not show Edward Finel.
[Since your first email, I have found much of this information showing Peter and Sarah’s family.  Yes, there are many online who have ‘connected’ Sarah Green and Edward Finel without proof.  Obviously, somewhere along the line I received the same information.  I posted it to the web, seeking corrections, which you have provided.  ]

No where have we ever found proof that Edward is her son. We would love to see that document.
[As would I.]

Like I mentioned in the beginning of this letter, you will get some more detail.

Notice how the email ends?  I will get some detail, but nothing is clear as to what that information would contain, other than vague mentions of a 'cousin' who has done all the research.  This email was 6 months ago and no other information has been forthcoming from this gentleman.

Am I being hyper-sensitive?  Or is this guy an extreme personality who feels somehow offended that an error was made in a family tree posting about one of his great-greats?  If that is the case, he must be a real piece of work.

Obviously, I have more research to do on this line and seek out the town records, at least this gentleman gave me a few clues with the boot.

Moultons of Licking County, Ohio

Located FindAGrave pages for my paternal 4th-great grandparents, Selah and Lydia (FINEL) MOULTON and noticed photos of their tombstones.  They are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Alexandria, Licking County, Ohio.

Until I received the email from Martha Sturgill of the Alexandria Public Library, I did not have their place of burial.  Martha was kind enough to search several records in Licking County, Ohio for me.

In the Maple Grove Cemetery records I did find the Moultons listed. They are buried side by side in plot 17, #3&4. Selah is listed as being born in 1790 and dying November 24, 1848 and Lydia as being born 1796 and dying December 3, 1869. They were the only Moulton's listed in cemetery records. Maple Grove is located just behind the school in Alexandria and is our biggest cemetery. There are many other small and family cemeteries on farms and in rural areas where some other Moulton's may be laid to rest. It is very hard to say.
Many of the early settlers of St. Albans Township in Licking County were from Vermont, as were the Moultons.  Prior to Ohio, the family was from Rutland County, Vermont.

Martha's email gave me some more insight into where Selah lived and records to research such as :

In 1830 the Bible Society reported 128 families in the Township with 750 total population. In 1836 the Deacon made a list of the families by school district. In that list Selah Moulton is reported to be living in the Worthington Road district. This is still a rural farming area and no mention of Mr. Moulton was made in the chapter about mill owners and other business owners. From this I am assuming that he was a farmer. The copy of the 1848 platt map in the book is very blurred, but I did find the name of S. Moulton on it. It is just slightly SW of the center of the township. Do you know if the children stayed in the area? I couldn't find the name on the 1854 map.

Selah and Lydia's son, Albert, is my ancestor.  Albert disappeared during the Gold Rush era, and I'm also trying to track him down as well.
