Madison County Indiana Locality Guide

As mentioned previously, one of my projects has been to create locality guides for places where my ancestors lived to aid in finding resources.

On my maternal side, Madison County, Indiana is a place my family has been since its early days.

The United States acquired the land that became Madison County from the Native Americans in the 1809 Treaty of Fort Wayne, and by the 1818 Treaty of St. Marys, considerably more territory became the property of the government.  The county was formed 4 January 1823 from lands governed by the Delaware New Purchase.

Madison County was named for James Madison, 4th President of the United States.

  • County Seat : Anderson
  • Largest City : Anderson
  • Record Loss : 1880

A link to the locality guide that I've been working on is here. Any suggestions or additions to additional resources will be appreciated.

Some of the surnames and when they arrived (approximately) in Madison County:
  • Wright (1867)
  • Lambertson (1918)
  • Pierce (1864)
  • King (1840)
  • Shaw (1847)
  • Groenendyke (1842)
  • Penisten (1840)

The Ultimate Sacrifice

Today in the United States it is Memorial Day, a day to remember and recognize those who have given the ultimate sacrifice while in military service to our country.

Looking through my RootsMagic database, I found the following individuals who gave the ultimate sacrifice (undoubtably, not a complete list) :

  • Daniel Beals (1822-1863), died in Louisville, KY while a member of Company A, 101st Indiana Infantry during the Civil War.  He was the son of Nathan C. & Elizabeth (Chew) Beals, making him my maternal 4th-great granduncle.
  • Samuel Chew (c1743-1778), died in Connecticut during the Revolutionary War while serving in the Continental Navy.  He was the son of Thomas & Martha (Taylor) Chew, making him my maternal 7th-great granduncle. The USS Chew was named in his honor.
  • Joseph Davis ( -1777), died in New York City after capture by the British on 13 Feb 1777, while serving in the 1st Regiment out of Monmouth, New Jersey.  He was the son of Thomas & Bethia (Maxson) Davis, making him my paternal 1st cousin 8 times removed.
  • Johann Jacob Deutsch (1821-1863), died of yellow fever while serving in Company D, 13th Connecticut Infantry during the Civil War.  He was the 4th-great grandfather of my daughter, Corinne.
  • John W. Duffey (1845-1863), died at Cumberland Gap while serving in Company G, 118th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War.  He was the son of Daniel L. & Susanna (Freese) Duffey, making him Eileen's 2nd-great granduncle.
  • John Wesley King (1837-1865), died at Paducah, Kentucky while serving in Company G, 17th Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.  He was the son of William & Nancy (Owings) King, making him my maternal 3rd-great granduncle.
  • John Cooper LeMaster (1934-1953), Marine Pfc., killed in action in Korea.  He was the son of Donald Cooper & Luella (Gibbons) LeMaster, making him my paternal 2nd cousin.
  • Gurdon Lord Pierce (1841-1864), died at Cold Harbor while serving as Lt. of Company C, 112th New York Volunteers.  He was the son of Austin & Mary Ann (Sterlin) Pierce, making him my maternal 1st cousin 5 times removed.
  • Reuben Sherman (1845-1864), died at Andersonville Prison while serving in 135th Ohio Infantry.  He was the son of Lorenzo & Sophia (Moulton) Sherman, making him my paternal 1st cousin 4 times removed.
  • Frederick Charles Wildt (1921-1944), killed in action 20 Jul 1944 in France.  He was the son of Arthur & Anna Magdalena (Damm) Wildt, making him Corinne's great-granduncle.
Looking over this list, I am honored by their sacrifice and proud of their history.  Though I have the service records for some, there are many in this list that I need to document their time in service.

King Cousin Connection

Just received a nice note from a cousin, Leon, who connects with me on the King line.  His ancestor was Thomas King (1817-1864) and his second wife, Martha E. (Haggerty) King (1830-1912) through their daughter Elizabeth.  His Thomas was the brother of my maternal 3rd-great grandfather, Daniel King (1820-1876).  The family lived in Madison County, Indiana.

Elizabeth was married to James Franklin Fink.  Hopefully, he can share some more detail on his line and I can add more cousins to my database.  Prior to his email, I only had Elizabeth's date of birth and no information on a marriage.

It appears that neither of us have discovered the origins in North Carolina of Thomas and Daniel's father, William King (c1790-1869).

Exploratory Data Analysis : Elizabeth (Shaw) King Cochran (1827-1900)

Elizabeth (Shaw) (King) Cochran (1827-1900) was my maternal 3rd-great grandmother.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about her.

1. Vital Records

Elizabeth was born October 29, 1829 in Fayette County, Indiana
1,2,3,4,5,6,7.
     1.1. Birth Certificate

The State of Indiana did not require birth certificates until 1907, so no birth certificate for Elizabeth is available.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If a Elizabeth's birth was mentioned in a local newspaper, it has been lost to time.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am not aware of any surviving Bible record for the Shaw family that would record the birth of Elizabeth.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one will be found.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

I am not aware of any baptismal record for Elizabeth, nor do I know the church affiliation of the Shaw family.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no indication that Elizabeth was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

I have not been able to locate a marriage record for Elizabeth and Daniel King.  They were married December 5, 1847 in Madison County, Indiana1.  After Daniel's death, Elizabeth married William H. Cochran, circa 1876, in Madison County, Indiana.  Likewise, I have not been able to locate a marriage record for them.  The courthouse in Madison County, Indiana suffered a fire in 1880 and early marriage records were lost.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of Elizabeth and Daniel's nuptials or Elizabeth and William's nuptials.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

Elizabeth and Daniel's 25th wedding anniversary would have been December 5, 1872.  Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of their anniversary.
Elizabeth passed away prior to being married for 25 years to William.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

There is no indication that Elizabeth and Daniel or Elizabeth and William were ever divorced.  Will need to search court records in Madison County, Indiana in order to complete an exhaustive search.

     1.3. Death Certificate

Elizabeth died October 10, 1900 in Frankton, Madison County, Indiana2. Her cause of death was typhoid fever.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Will need to search contemporary newspapers to see if I can locate a copy of Elizabeth's obituary or death record.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Will need to search the local historical society to see if they have funeral home records that might shed some light on Elizabeth's funeral.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Elizabeth was buried in the Howard Cemetery, Pipe Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana.  There was no marker found for her in a search of the cemetery.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1900 Federal Census

On June 13, 1900, Elizabeth was enumerated in the William Cochran household in Frankton, Madison County, Indiana7, as Elizabeth Cochran, wife, born October 1827, age 70, married 20 years.  She was the mother of 10 children, 6 of whom were living.  She was born in Ohio and her father was born in Pennsylvania and mother in Kentucky.  She could read.

          2.1.2. 1880 Federal Census

On June 28, 1880, Elizabeth was enumerated in the Wm. H. Cochran household in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana4, as Elizabeth Cochran, wife, age 50, keeping house. She was born in Indiana and her father was born in Ohio and mother born in Kentucky.

          2.1.3. 1870 Federal Census

On September 12, 1870, Elizabeth was enumerated in the Daniel King household in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana6, as Elizabeth King, age 39, keeping house, born in Indiana.

          2.1.4. 1860 Federal Census

On July 31, 1860, Elizabeth was enumerated in the Daniel King household in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana5, as Elizabeth King, age 31, born in Indiana, cannot read and write.

          2.1.5. 1850 Federal Census

On August 21, 1850, Elizabeth was enumerated in the Daniel King household in Jackson Township, Madison County, Indiana3, as Elizabeth King, age 20, born in Tennessee.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Indiana conducted census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1931.  These, however, were merely for the purposes of legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of records to see what light they might shed on the Shaw or King families.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Not applicable, as Elizabeth was female.

     3.2. Pension Records

I am not aware of any military service for Elizabeth's father or husbands that would have made her eligible for a pension.

     3.3. Service Records

Not applicable, as Elizabeth was female.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records will need to be thoroughly searched in Madison County, Indiana to see what records might mention Elizabeth and husbands Daniel and William.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Plat maps of Madison County, Indiana will need to be searched to see what information that can be gleaned that might be relevant for my search.

5. Supplemental Records

Supplemental records available for research on Elizabeth include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

Grantor & Grantee Research in Madison County, Indiana

Deed Records, Madison County, Indiana Recorder's Office
Went last Friday to the courthouse in Anderson to do some research on my Madison County, Indiana families.  Unlike other times when I've spent researching there, this time I had a plan.  I was focusing on four families : Alderman, King, Penisten and Wright and called them my AKPW group.  My goal was to start with the earliest records and see if I could discover when they came into the county and find transactions related to my direct lines.

I met with some success, mainly in getting the book and page numbers for future reference, but did also manage to obtain a couple of copies.  They only charge $1.00 per page, but those big books are hard to copy from.  Currently, they are in the process of imaging their records.  Anything from 1958-on is currently imaged, but of course, the records I am looking for are about 100 years earlier.  Below is a listing of what I did find, have not identified all of these records as my family.  Spelling may be off as well, some of that handwriting was difficult to read.

Exploratory Data Analysis : Daniel King (1820-1876)

Daniel King (1820-1876) was my maternal 3rd-great grandfather.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about him.

1. Vital Records

Daniel was born September 3, 18201.  The place of his birth has been given as either Tennessee2, Ohio3, or Indiana4.  These inconsistencies in his place of birth are due to the fact this family moved around quite a bit, and will be addressed in a later post.

     1.1. Birth Certificate

The State of Indiana did not require birth certificates at this time.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If Daniel's birth was mentioned in a local newspaper, it has been lost to time.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am not aware of any surviving Bible record of the King family that would record the birth of Daniel.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one could be located.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

I am not aware of any baptismal record for Daniel.  The King family were affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal faith.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no indication that Daniel was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

Daniel married Elizabeth Shaw on December 5, 1847 in Madison County, Indiana.  I do not have a source for this fact in my database.  The courthouse in Madison County, Indiana suffered a fire in 1880 and earlier marriage records were lost.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of Daniel's nuptials.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

Daniel and Elizabeth's 25th wedding anniversary would have been December 5, 1872.  Will need to check contemporary newspaper accounts to see if any mention was made of an anniversary celebration.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

There is no indication that Daniel and Elizabeth were ever divorced.

     1.3. Death Certificate

Daniel died February 24, 1876 in Frankton, Madison County, Indiana1, according to my database.  The State of Indiana did not require death certificates at this time.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Will need to seek out contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of Daniel's death.  Will add this to my "to-do" list for my next research trip.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Will need to search the local historical society to see if they have records of funeral homes that might shed some light on Daniel's funeral.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Daniel's tombstone in the Howard Cemetery in Madison County, Indiana5 has been photographed.  A link to his memorial at FindAGrave is located here.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1870 Federal Census

Daniel was enumerated as the head of household in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana3, as Daniel King, age 50, Farmer, born in Ohio.  He was a U.S. citizen.  The value of his real estate was $14,500 and his personal estate was $ 6,031.

          2.1.2. 1860 Federal Census

Daniel was enumerated as the head of household in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana4, as Daniel King, age 39, Farmer, born in Indiana.  The value of his real estate was $ 4,000 and his personal estate was $ 1,375.

          2.1.3. 1850 Federal Census

Daniel was enumerated as the head of household in Jackson Township, Madison County, Indiana2, as Daniel King, age 29, farmer, born in Tennessee.  The value of his real estate was $ 400.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Indiana conducted census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1931.  These, however, were merely for the purposes of legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what light they might shed on the King family.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

I have not yet located any draft registration nor military service for Daniel.

     3.2. Pension Records

          Not applicable.

     3.3. Service Records

          Not applicable.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Madison County, Indiana to see what records might mention Daniel.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Plat maps of Madison County, Indiana will need to be searched to see what information can be gleaned that might be relevant to my search.

5. Supplemental Records

Supplemental records available for research on Daniel include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

Photo : Virgil Lee Wright (b. July 6, 1894)

This is a photo of my maternal great-grandfather, Virgil Lee Wright, from a collection of photos that mom has.  Someone has written on the backside his name and date of birth - July 6, 1894.  He was born in Orestes, Madison County, Indiana.

In those days, infants of both sexes were photographed in what were dresses to aid in toilet training.  Wikipedia has a good article on breeching.  I'm glad that this photograph was identified, or I'd never figure out who it was.

Virgil was the son of John William and Ellen (King) Wright, the oldest of two sons born to them.

Cousin Bait : King

One of the best reasons to use a blog as "cousin bait" is that search engines such as Google will allow other researchers to find your old posts and reach out to you.

I received an anonymous comment to my 2011 blog post on the King Schoolhouse and I've reached out hoping that this relative will have more on the King line.

This individual says they have more recent pictures of the schoolhouse.  I would love to see what it looked like and learn more about how it ties in with my family.

Surprise Party For Virgil Bowers

"Surprise Party," announcement, Alexandria Times-Tribune, 12 September 1913; online images, Newspapers.com (www.newspapers.com : accessed 14 March 2015).

SURPRISE PARTY

In honor of the thirtieth birthday of Mr. Virgil Bowers a surprise party was given at the home last evening.  Ice cream and cake were served and a most enjoyable evening reported.  The evening was spent in music and games.  Among those present were : Nellie Free, Bertha Allen, Hazel Foland, Mattie Knopps, Lillian Allen, Alice Smith, Frances Wright, Ruth Free, Martha Allen, Mary Moore and Messrs. Charles Sexton, Virgil Wright, James Jarrett, Walter Knopps, Joseph Gaither, Virgil King, Chester Wright, Jesse Fesler, Roscoe Young, Tom Tobin, Arthur Pete, Glen Free, William Knopps, Miles Gooding, Floyd Miller, Virgil Allen, Jesse Gaither, Russell Allen and Mr. and Mrs. John Wright, Mr. and Mrs. George Allen, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Manrig, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Gaither and Mrs. Fae Leach and daughter, Elizabeth.

---

This newspaper announcement of the surprise birthday party thrown in honor of Virgil Bowers was attended by my maternal 2nd-great grandfather, Virgil Lee Wright (1894-1972), as well as his brother, Chester Arthur Wright (1896-1913) and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John (Ellen King) Wright.  Several other recognizable names in my family history research and locals from the Alexandria area are mentioned.

The Charles Sexton was the future husband of Frances Wright, who also attended the party.  Frances was the daughter of James and Clara (Hicks) Wright, and a first cousin of Virgil Wright.

I'm sure there are some other relatives in this as well, the Virgil King name keeps showing up, and as of yet, I haven't placed him in the family tree.

Birthday Party With An Unnamed Guest Of Honor

"Orestes News Notes," announcement, Alexandria Times-Tribune, 22 August 1913; online images, Newspapers.com (www.newspapers.com : accessed 14 March 2015).

Mr. and Mrs. Dan Young entertained at their home in honor of the birthday of their son.  Games were played and refreshments served.  Among those present were : Maude Youngs, Iva White, Clara Snethen, Mary Judd, Mary Youngs, Ruth Etchison, Josie Steward, Hazel King, Pearl Little, Mary Moore, Isabel Pyle, Helen Etchison, Nettie Athan, Mary Carver, Bertha Allen, Mary Whitten, Allean Etchison, Pearl Cummins, Bessie Laycock, Messrs. Emmet Moyer, Everett Judd, Chas. Cummins, Chas. Bicknell, Chester King, Virgil Wright, Arthur Peet, Troy Fox, Lee White, John Cook, Jay Noble, Floyd Miller, Edward Blake, Jim Jarret, Jesse Porter, Virgil King, Mr. and Mrs. George Judd, and Mr. and Mrs. E. Moyer.

---

This interesting announcement about a birthday party that was attended by my maternal 2nd-great grandfather, Virgil Lee Wright (1894-1972), contains references to several people who were related to him.  The party was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Young for their son, but the name of the son is not given.

I believe that the birthday party was held in honor of Samuel Roscoe Young (1895-1934), son of Daniel R. and Gertrude (Johnson) Young.  He was born August 27th, and was Virgil Wright's first cousin once removed.  Their common ancestors were Daniel King and Elizabeth Shaw.

I also believe that the newspaper made a few errors : the Chester King mentioned right before Virgil Wright was likely Chester Wright, brother of Virgil.

The rest of the names are locals and cousins of the family, some of whom I have yet to place.

King Burials in Frankton K. of P. I.O.O.F. Cemetery

Located the following burials in the Knights of Pythias International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery in Frankton, Madison County, Indiana from the book K of P I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Lafayette Township, Madison County, Indiana by Haroldine Zook, typed by Nancy Horn, 1995.  Some of these I know are definitely related to my King family, others will need to be researched.  These papers were part of my paper monster I've been trying to conquer.  Believe that I found the book in the Elwood Indiana Public Library.
