Aunt Vera's Diary - March 15th

In the summer of 2019, I was able to photograph the entries in the diary of my maternal great-aunt, Vera (Haley) Stuber.  The entries cover the years from 1968-1971 time frame and provide an interesting view of her daily activities. Items in brackets are my notes for further research.

1968 - March 15th - Friday

We were to Recovery this morning.  C. helped Dennis in woods.  Trying to rain this eve.  I cleaned room this P.M.

1969 - March 15th - Saturday

Cool but sunshiney day.  Washed my hair and did Saturdays work.  Dora went back to her home yesterday

1970 - March 15th - Sunday

Attended church in A.M.  Ord & Ruth here in P.M.  Snow showers & cold.  Didn't go to church in eve.

1971 - March 15th - Monday

Colder & rainy.  Did washing but had to dry in house as usual.

Aunt Vera's Diary - March 14th

1968 - March 14th - Thursday

Went to Portland to take Drivers test but they said streets were too bad.  Dennis & family were here in the evening.

1969 - March 14th - Friday

Were to Portland in A.M. Cold with snow flurries.  Went with Bernards to Pleasant Hill in eve.  Rev. DeWeerd evangelist.

1970 - March 14th - Saturday

Baked 2 rubard pies & did some cleaning.  A real March day sun shines, then snow showers.  And real cold.

1971 - March 14th - Sunday

A nice day, like Spring.  Attended church morn & evening.

1968 - March 13th - Wednesday

Sunshiney today.  No mail nor school today.  Snow plow went through this afternoon.

1969 - March 13th - Thursday

Did some cleaning house.  Brot our bedding downstairs.  Mrs. Franklin is going home to-morrow.

1970 - March 13th - Friday

We went to Portland in P.M.  Got front quarter of beef at (Fishers')  136 lbs. $ 74.91 processing and all.

1971 - March 13th - Saturday

Real foggy, all A.M.  Baked gooseberry pies, and usual work.

Ironed etc.  A very bad day.  Snowed 4 in. drifted and icy.  Mrs. Haffner buried today.

1969 - March 12th - Wednesday

Cold but sun shone.  Defrosted refrigerator.  Attended Missionary meeting in the evening.

1970 - March 12th - Thursday

Bernards, Grace Phillips and we went to see Carrie found her real good.  1st she had been downstairs.

1917 - March 12th - Friday

We went to Portland this P.M.  Snow about all gone.  Hittle here this evening.

I washed and waxed kitchen floor.  Hittle was here this P.M.  Cooler and rather windy today.

1969 - March 11th - Tuesday

Still snow flurries & cold.  Ironed and remodeled a dress.  Clarence went to 'Recovery.

1970 - March 11th - Wednesday

Attended missionary meeting in the evening.  Plan to go to Lima tomorrow.

1971 - March 11th - Thursday

Did some hand sewing.  Began snowing this P.M. and sure putting it down.

Went to Bob Smiths to church in morning.  Ords, Waymons, Idola and Donna here in P.M.  Mrs. Haffner died last night.

1969 - March 10th - Monday

Washed today.  Snowing quite a lot this eve.

1970 - March 10th - Tuesday

We, Bernards & Grace P.  were going to see Carrie yesterday but thot weather too bad.  We were ready to go.  Carrie & W. were here in the evening.  I ironed, mended & cleaned refrigerator.

1971 - March 10th - Wednesday

Snowed in night & all A.M. changed to rain and very foggy in evening.  No prayer meeting had services last eve.

Baked a cake and did usual Saturday work.

1969 - Entry struck through, had written March 10th

1970 - March 9th - Monday

Did big washing.  Real cold today.  Hung few out side.

1971 - March 9th - Tuesday

Ironed.  Leona was here this P.M.  We were at church in eve.  Missionary from Haiti there gave talk and showed pictures.

Sowed a litted lettuce and radish seed.  Cleaned up house some and washed woodwork & walls in kitchen

1969 - March 8th - Sunday

Attended church morn & evening.  Former pastor (Hutcheson) preached in eve.  Called on Rose before church in eve.

1970 - March 8th - Sunday

Eugenes and we went to church in A.M.  They went to town after dinner.  Young folks from Olivet at church morn & eve.

1971 - March 8th - Monday

Still very windy today.  I washed and cleaned books in small book case.  Ruth Grile and Mrs. Hendrin called this P.M.

Clarence took drivers test again today but failed again.  Just got home when Roy Johnson came, here for supper.

Baked cookies and peach pies.

Eugenes went to Portland came back in evening.

A regular March day, snowing blowing cold.  We attended church this morning.  And to Jessie Millers funeral this P.M.  Grace Schell went with us.

Ironed this A.M. Sun shiney but windy.  Snowed a little this morn.  Equity meeting tonight also prayer meeting, didn't go because C. didn't have license.

Went to Portland in A.M.  Attended World Days of Prayer at the M.E. church in evening.

Nora & Eugene here.  We went to Galens in P.M.

Been a rainy day.  Baked pies and did usual Saturdays work.

We were to Portland ate dinner at Ruths.  Clarence took drivers test & failed again.  Listed our farm with Griesinger this evening.

1969 - March 5th - Thursday

Clarence took Dora to Edward Griesingers this A.M.  He went to work at church again this P.M.  I cleaned house some.

1970 - March 5th - Thursday

Nora & Eugene here for dinner went to Ruths for supper back here for night.  We attended Equity Meeting.

1971 - March 5th - Friday

Did a little cleaning  Clarence went to Portland this A.M.

Nice day but windy.  We went to Roy's meeting near Chatnooga with Mrs. Baucher, also Mrs. Wilson and Pat Huntsman.

1969 - March 4th - Wednesday

Clarence worked at church again in P.M.  Took Dora to Schells, she went with Grace to prayer meeting we got her on way home from Ecquity Meeting.

1970 - March 4th - Wednesday

Getting ready for company.  Nora & Eugene coming tomorrow.

1971 -  March 4th - Thursday

Went to 'Recovery this A.M.  Jessie Miller died this P.M.

Attended church morn and eve.  Took Mrs. Franklin in eve but Smiths took her home.

1969 - March 3rd - Tuesday

Clarence worked at church in P.M. Dora called on John Griesingers until he came back.

1970 - March 3rd - Tuesday

Ironed and cleaned some at closet upstairs.  Nora & Eugene are at Carries, came this eve.

1971 - March 3rd - Wednesday

Cleaned at bookcase.  Did a little hand washing.  Real cold, didn't go to prayer meeting.  Have cold in my head.

Baked plum pies and did usual Saturday work.

Dora and we called at Huntsmans in P.M.

1970 - March 2nd - Monday

Washed today, foggy all day and eve.  Bro. Granger came and got us.  Missionary at our church.

Attended womens prayer meeting this A.M.  at Audry Schlambs. Ironed this P.M.  Another sunshiney day.  Attended Equity meeting in the eveing.

Defrosted refrigerator, tended house plants.  Made jelly from canned grape juice.  Attended day of prayer at our church in the eveing.

Dora Franklin came home with us from church.

1970 - March 1st - Sunday

Attended church morn & eve.  Last night of Youth revival.

1971 - March 1st - Monday

Went to Nells for permanent in forenoon.  Washed in P.M.  March came in like a lamb. Sunshiney day.

Light snow showers all day.  Did usual work, embroidered some on pillow.

Vera Delphene (Haley) Stuber was born 10 March 1890 in Jay County, Indiana, daughter of Eli Weldon & Cora Belle (Metzner) Haley.  She married 14 February 1915 in Jay County, Indiana to Clarence Leroy Stuber.  Vera died 17 June 1987 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana. Clarence was born 4 February 1891 in Jay County, Indiana, son of Henry and Margaret (Metzger) Stuber.  Clarence died 20 May 1981 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.  They had no surviving children.

Aunt Vera's Diary - February 28th

In the summer of 2019, I was able to photograph the entries in the diary of my maternal great-aunt, Vera (Haley) Stuber.  The entries cover the years from 1968-1971 time frame and provide an interesting view of her daily activities. Items in brackets are my notes for further research.

1968 - February 28th - Wednesday

Did regular work and some mending today.  Had snow showers. Were about ready for prayer meeting but snowing so we decided to stay home.

1969 - February 28th - Friday 

Baked cake.  Went to Portland to Dr.  Dora Franklin went along.  Called on Rose, she isn't so well.

1970 - February 28th - Saturday

Clarence helped at church this A.M.  I baked pies etc.  John wrote Carrie was sitting up some.  Ruth comes tomorrow.

1971 - February 28th - Sunday

Attended church morn & evening.  Waymon & Carrie here this P.M.  Been a nice day.

1968 - February 27th - Tuesday

Ironed. The Rev. from Oregon was here to get pledges for new church.  Kenneth & Golda were here in P.M.  We were to Mrs. Franklins awhile in eve.

1969 - February 27th - Thursday

Cleaned up the house.  Baked cream pie & baked pie crusts.  Saw in Spencerville paper Emma Roberts funeral today.

1970 - February 27th - Friday

We went to Portland this A.M. and attended Youth revivial in eve.  Rev. Leonard evangelist.

1971 - February 27th - Saturday

A very windy but sunshiney day.  Baked cake and did usual Saturdays work.

Another nice winter day.  I washed, Clarence went for coal this A.M.

1969 - February 26th - Wednesday

Cleaned some upstairs.  Clarence went to 'Recovery.  Bud Greisinger went for Dora Franklin.  We took her to prayer meeting.

1970 - February 26th - Thursday

Clarence helped at the church this P.M.  I did some cleaning.

1971 - February 26th - Friday

Been a rainy day.  Clarence went to Portland.  I defrosted refrigerator & did some cleaning

Cold but nice sunshiney winter day.  Attended church morn and Ruth, Ord, Victor, Mark and Rick here in the afternoon.

1968 - February 25th - Tuesday

Ironed, made noodles and dressing.  Washed windows and some woodwork in kitchen.

1970 - February 25th - Wednesday

Wind very cold today.  We attended prayer meeting.

1971- February 25th - Thursday

Sun shone nice, become cloudy this P.M.  Washed bed clothes and cleaned bedroom.  Hung most of clothes outside, about the first this winter.
