Aunt Vera's Diary - April 4th

In the summer of 2019, I was able to photograph the entries in the diary of my maternal great-aunt, Vera (Haley) Stuber.  The entries cover the years from 1968-1971 time frame and provide an interesting view of her daily activities. Items in brackets are my notes for further research.

1968 - April 4th - Thursday

Cleaned a little in the kitchen, put up different curtains.  Cleaned at the wood house.  Had 1 and 2/10 inches of rain last night.

1969 - April 4th - Friday

Did some cleaning.  Clarence went to Good Friday services at Church of Christ.  I baked cake.

1970 - April 4th - Saturday

Did usual work.  Baked cake.

1971 - April 4th - Sunday

Attended church morn & eve.  The singers from Mt. Vernon college had morning services.  Ground covered with snow in A.M. but gone by night.

Aunt Vera's Diary - April 3rd

1968 - April 3rd - Wednesday

Cleaned broom closet and medicine cabinet.  Didn't go to prayer meeting, too rainy.

1969 - April 3rd - Thursday

Cleaning dresser drawers etc.  Attended prayer and communion services this eve.

1970 - April 3rd - Friday

Did some cleaning.  Clarence went to Portland.

1971 - April 3rd - Saturday

Baked pies did usual work and cleaned refrigerator.  Mostly sun shiney but windy today.

Ironed, washed curtains and cleaned bed room today.

1969 - April 2nd - Wednesday

Cleaning drawers etc.

1970 - April 2nd - Thursday

Been a bad day, windy, rain and snow.  Sun is trying to shine this eve but windy.

1971 - April 2nd - Friday

Went to Portland in A.M.  Cleaned bath room and sitting room in P.M.  Clarence took noodles over to parsonage.

A real nice day.  Washed & cleaned bed & springs in bed room.

1969 - April 1st - Tuesday

Ironed and did some patching and mending.  Joan & girls here for eggs.

1970 - April 1st - Wednesday

Didn't go to prayer meeting so rainy.  I've been having stomach & bowel trouble this week.

1971 - April 1st - Thursday

Cleaned two closets & east bed room upstairs.  Began raining this P.M.

Attended church morning & evening.  Mrs. Franklin here for dinner.  Mary & Galen here in P.M.  Called at Harley Stoners & Ella's before church in evening.

1969 - March 31st - Monday

A real nice day.  Washed and aired bed clothes in long closet.  Ruth, Donna & Weldons here in P.M.  Clarence helped at church.

1970 - March 31st - Tuesday

Ironed & mended.  Siders had folks here to look over farm this eve.  Been a real nice day.

1971 - March 31st - Wednesday

Made more noodles today, also aired more bed clothes.  Attended prayer meeting.

Another spring like day.  I baked cake, coffee cake, apple crispt and made potato salad.  Stewed the rest of the apples.

1970 - March 30th - Sunday

Sunshiney but cold.  Attended church morn & eve.  Called on Rose before church in evening.

1971 - March 30th - Monday

Cold this morn but been a real nice day.  I washed.  Clarence went for coal.  Hittle here this P.M. baled up loose straw.

1971 - March 30th - Tuesday

A nice day.  Aired bed clothes and made noodles for church.  Young peopls choir coming to our church Sun. A.M.

We were to Portland this A.M.  Clarence took clothes in for Ruth Matchett and got his hair cut.  I washed my hair.

1969 - March 29th - Saturday

We were to Portland in A.M. got new hat $4.98.  Baked cherry pies etc. in P.M.

1970 - March 29th - Sunday

"Easter" had 367 at S.S.  Singing & testimonies in evening.  Carrie & Waymon here in P.M.

1971 - March 29th - Monday

Did a big wash also ironed.  Rather cold and windy today also mostly cloudy.

Another nice day.  Aired bed clothes.  Did weakly cleaning downstairs.

Clarence went to sale at Loys.  I cleaned up the house.

1970 - March 28th - Saturday

Did usual Saturdays work.  Baked cherry & peach pies.  Deviled eggs.  Our phone out for 3rd day.

1971 - March 28th - Sunday

Attended church morn & eve.  Ballmer son in law preached in Rev. Ballmers absence.  Rev. & Mrs. in Florida.  Called on Rose in P.M.  A real nice day.

Cleaned 2 rooms upstairs.  Attended prayer meeting and called at funeral home to see Mrs. Ulmer.  Funeral tomorrow P.M. at Bethel.

1969 - March 27th - Thursday

Cool but sun shone today.  I baked two batches of cookies.  Clarence took corn planter etc. over to Loys for sale tomorrow.

1970 - March 27th - Friday

Attended Good Friday services at the M.E. Church.  Called on Ella did our grocery shopping.

1971 - March 27th - Saturday

Did usual Saturdays work.

Rainy this morning but turned out to be a nice day.  I cleaned at the clothes closets today.  Heard Grace Van Trees mother died today.

1969 - March 26th - Wednesday

Cold, windy and snowy today.  I made bed doll for Leona.  Clarence sprouted potatoes.  Thot to bad to go to prayer meeting.

1970 - March 26th - Thursday

Cleaned part of house.

1971 - March 26th - Friday

Baked cookies and did some cleaning.  Been cool but a nice sunshiney day.

Snow going fast.  Real nice day.  Clarence went to Recovery.  I washed and ironed.

1969 - March 25th - Tuesday

Cleaned at long clothes closet and west closet.  Clarence helped at church in P.M.

Cleaned rooms upstairs.  Ready to go to prayer meeting, rained so hard we didn't go.

Scrubbed the basement this A.M.  Sun shone this A.M. but cloudy this P.M.

Dads 102 birthday [Eli Weldon Haley born March 24, 1866]

1968 - March 24th - Sunday

Icy and snow drifts.  Didn't get to church all day.  No one from country got their for S.S.  Began thawing in P.M.

1969 - March 24th - Monday

Rainy day.  I washed & ironed.  Joan called this morn for eggs.  Clarence is helping at church this P.M.

1970 - March 24th - Tuesday

Ironed, finished long closet and cleaned the north one.

1971 - March 24th - Wednesday

Dads birthday (105)  Attended prayer meeting.  Mrs. Ferner led in Rev.  Ballmers absence.  Real cold for spring.  Clarence got trailer load of coal.

A very bad day, snowing and blowing.  Plow went thru at 3.  Baked apple pies.

1969 - March 23rd - Sunday

Attended church morn & eve.  Idola, Donna & Galens were here in P.M.  Field caught on fire on Clarks and spread to Dennis'

1970 - March 23rd - Monday

Another cloudy damp day.  Washed but dried inside.  Cleaned at long closet.

1971 - March 23rd - Tuesday

Real cold for spring.  Worked in basement and did a little sewing.

A bad day.  Rained last night and been snowing all day.  Cleaned part of house & baked cake.

Been a damp day, misting rain.  Made noodles to freeze.  Made mayonaisse and tended house plants.

Did some cleaning.  Attended Fred Beelers funeral in P.M. and did our shopping.

We went to Portland in P.M.  Like a spring day.

1971 - March 21st - Sunday

To church morn & eve.  Revival closed in evening.  Been a nice day.

Attended prayer meeting.  Real warm today but say rain tonight.

1969 - March 20th - Thursday

Clarence got coal and worked at church.  I did some ironing & mending.  Mopped & waxed kitchen.  Attended revival at Leona's church.

1970 - March 20th - Friday

Did some cleaning today.

1971 - March 20th - Saturday

Baked cake.  Attended fish fry at the Fire Dept. in eve, then on to Youth Revival at our church.

Vera Delphene (Haley) Stuber was born 10 March 1890 in Jay County, Indiana, daughter of Eli Weldon & Cora Belle (Metzner) Haley.  She married 14 February 1915 in Jay County, Indiana to Clarence Leroy Stuber.  Vera died 17 June 1987 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana. Clarence was born 4 February 1891 in Jay County, Indiana, son of Henry and Margaret (Metzger) Stuber.  Clarence died 20 May 1981 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.  They had no surviving children.

Aunt Vera's Diary - March 19th

In the summer of 2019, I was able to photograph the entries in the diary of my maternal great-aunt, Vera (Haley) Stuber.  The entries cover the years from 1968-1971 time frame and provide an interesting view of her daily activities. Items in brackets are my notes for further research.

1968 - March 19th - Tuesday

Well Clarence finally passed his drivers test today.  And are we happy.

1969 - March 19th - Wednesday

Ironed etc. sowed lettuce & radishes sweat peas.  Did some hand washing.  Clarence cleaned car and made new frame for hot bed.  About ready for church.

1970 - March 19th - Thursday

Cleaned dishes in cupboards. Damp weather these days.

1971 - March 19th - Friday

Rainy this morning so we went to Portland in forenoon.  Called at Ruths.

Aunt Vera's Diary - March 18th

1968 - March 18th - Monday

A real nice day but windy.  I washed & ironed.  Clarence helped Dennis in woods this P.M.

1969 - March 18th - Tuesday

Finished painting kitchen.  Attended revival at Leona's church in evening.

1970 - March 18th - Wednesday

Had plenty of snow today.  Foggy in eve, we didn't go to prayer meeting.  Telephone out couple of days.

1971 - March 18th - Thursday

Did some work upstairs.  Defrosted refrigerator.

Attended church morn & eve.  Bob Smiths took us, were to Dora Franklins for grape pie after church in evening.  Ord & Ruth were here in afternoon.

1969 - March 17th - Monday

A nice day.  Washed, hung clothes out doors.  Began painting kitchen in P.M.

1970 - March 17th - Tuesday

Ironed etc.

1971 - March 17th - Wednesday

Cleaned some drawers.  Attended prayer meeting.

Baked pies & did usual Saturday work

1969 - March 16th - Sunday

Attended church morn & eve.  Called at Ella's before church.

1970 - March 16th - Monday

Not quite so cold, snowed a little.  Washed, made grape nuts.  Cleaned rest of the cabbage.

1971 - March 16th - Tuesday

Colder with snow showers.  Sold our hay today.  Went to Nells to have hair washed & set this P.M.
