Isabella Lewis (1850-1876), Huntington County, Indiana

Working on filling in some gaps in my database by utilizing the "Indiana Marriages, 1811-1959" database at Familysearch.org to see what updates and corrections I could find.

Isabella Lewis (1850-1876) was the daughter of Solomon and Margaret (Rinehart) Lewis.  Her marriage to William Arnold on December 19, 1869 in Huntington County, Indiana was found in the database.  Prior to this find, I only had a date of their marriage and not the location. I have not yet determined whether William Arnold was a brother to the Levi Arnold who married Isabella's sister, Amanda.

Isabella was Eileen's maternal 2nd-great grandaunt.  The family lived in Jefferson Township, Huntington County, Indiana in the 1870 census.  Both William and Isabella died within a month of each other in 1876 and are buried in the Purviance Cemetery in Huntington County.  I do not yet know if there were any children.

Exploratory Data Analysis: Andrew Frank Haley (1864-1937)

Andrew Frank Haley (1864-1937) was my paternal great-granduncle.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about him.

1. Vital Records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

Frank was born March 4, 1864 in Ashland County, Ohio. The 1900 census states he was born in March 18641.  The State of Ohio did not require the keeping of birth records until 1867.  State law required the probate court to record these births from 1867 to 1908, according to the Ohio Historical Society webpage.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If Frank's birth was recorded in a newspaper, I have not yet discovered it.  There are editions of the Sandusky Register in existence, and that is one avenue of research in the future.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am not aware of any surviving Bible record of the Haley family.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one does exist.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

The Haley's were members of the Evangelical Association.  I am not aware of any baptismal record from Frank at this time.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no evidence that Frank was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

Frank married on November 3, 1887 in Jay County, Indiana to Emma Catherine Leonhard2.  I located a copy of their marriage license at FamilySearch and will make it the subject of a future post.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of Frank and Emma's nuptials.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

Frank and Emma's 25th wedding anniversary would have been November 3, 1912.  Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if mention was made of any anniversary celebrations.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

There is no indication that Frank and Emma were ever divorced, but a search of Jay County, Indiana court records needs to be done.

     1.3. Death Certificate

Frank died July 29, 1937 in Oak Park, Cook County, Illinois3.  I do need to obtain a copy of his official death certificate, will add this to my list of "to-do" items. This death record was the subject of a previous post.

Frank's son, Clarence, was a physician in Oak Park, and he may have been living there or visiting at the time of his death.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Will need to check local newspapers in Jay County, Indiana as well as Illinois to see if mention was made of Frank's obituary.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Frank's funeral record was the subject of a previous post.  Frank's funeral was conducted by the Baird Funeral home of Portland, Indiana.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Frank's tombstone in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Fort Recovery, Mercer County, Ohio4 has been photographed.  His tombstone shows "Frank A. 1864-1937" and "Emma C. 1866-1925" with "Father" and "Mother" below each of their names.

Frank's memorial page at FindAGrave is located here.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1930 Federal Census

I have not yet been able to locate Frank in the 1930 census.  He spent most of his adult live in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana.  His wife had just passed in 1925, so it is possible he was living with other relatives.  Will add this to my "to-do" list.

          2.1.2. 1920 Federal Census

On January 3, 1920, Frank was enumerated as the head of household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana5, as Frank A. Haley, age 55, married, Farmer.  He was born in Ohio, as were both of his parents.  He owned his own home and it was mortgaged.  He could read and write and spoke English.

          2.1.3. 1910 Federal Census

On April 15, 1910, Frank was enumerated as the head of household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana6, as Frank A. Haley, age 46, married, Farmer.  He was born in Ohio, as were both of his parents.  He owned his own home and it was mortgaged.  He had been married for 22 years.  He could read and write and spoke English.

          2.1.4. 1900 Federal Census

On June 20, 1900, Frank was enumerated as head of household in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana1, as Frank Haley, age 36, married Farmer.  He was born March 1864 in Ohio.  Both of his parents were born in Ohio.  He owned his own home and it was mortgaged.  He had been married for 12 years.  He could read and write and spoke English.

          2.1.5. 1880 Federal Census

On June 22, 1880, Frank was enumerated in the George W. Haley household in Liberty Township, Seneca County, Ohio7, as Andrew F., son, age 16.  He was born in Ohio as were both of his parents.  He had attended school within the year.

          2.1.6. 1870 Federal Census

On June 6, 1870, Frank was enumerated in the George Haley household in Harrisville Township, Medina County, Ohio8, as Andrew F., age 6, born in Ohio.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1931.  These, however, were merely for the purposes of legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what light they might shed on the Haley farm.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Not applicable, as Frank was too old to sign up for the draft during World War I.

     3.2. Pension Records

Not applicable, as I have found no evidence that Frank ever served in the military.

     3.3. Service Records

          Not applicable.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Jay County, Indiana.  Frank lived most of his adult life in Noble Township.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Jay County published a plat map in 1874, 1881, 1887, 1901, 1910 and 1920 that may be relevant to my search for Frank.  I have access to the 1887 and 1901 plat maps, and need to research what they show.

5. Supplemental Records

Supplemental records available to research for Frank include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.
