August 2013 - Jay County Journal

The August 2013 Jay County Journal, published by the Jay County Historical Society, contained vital records extracted from the August 8, 1889 edition of The Portland Commercial.  In the section dealing with Salamonia, mention was made of my ancestor, William P. Wehrly.

We called at the barber shop which is being run by R.C. Hinshaw, formerly of Winchester.  He is doing a good business and being desirous of hearing the news of the county, subscribed for the Commercial, the leading newspaper of the county.  While in the above place, Wm P. Wherley, who runs the saw mill came in.  He is on the sick list at present.  Salamonia has a good Comet band and the boys rendered a few choice selections for the benefit of the writer, for which they have our thanks.
So now I know that an exact date when my 2x-great grandpa was on the sick list.  Bet he never imagined that anyone would care after all these years.

New Corydon Sesquicentennial Souvenir 1821-1971

The town of New Corydon in Jay County, Indiana celebrated its sesquicentennial on the weekend of Saturday, July 31 and Sunday, August 1, 1971.  A celebration booklet was published and mention was made of one of my collateral family members.

Galen Miller was mentioned on page 7, as a one-time owner of the store in town.  The store traced its ownership to Theopolis Wilson in 1843.  The store was discontinued in 1948 after 105 years of business.

Galen was born November 18, 1894 in Jay County, Indiana and died  July 6, 1973 in Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana.  He was a grocer for many years in New Corydon, Portland and Muncie.  Galen was married to Mary Annettie  Haley, daughter of Eli Weldon and Cora Belle (Metzner) Haley.
