Marriage Record: Thomas McCool to Katy Harpole, 1819

Decided to swing over to FamilySearch to see what I could find on Thomas McCOOL (1797-1867).  Found his marriage record in Warren County, Kentucky to Katy HARPOLE on January 14, 1819.

So, that helps to explain the relationships with the HARPOLE line, and clears up that Katy or Catherine, as I have her, was the mother of his children.  Note W.S. Harpole was a witness to Thomas' will, and he was buried in the Harpole Cemetery.

A quick Google search finds another researchers family tree that has Martha SCALES as the wife of Thomas' son, John B. McCool, marrying in 1823 in Warrick County, Indiana.  However, this person has John B. as the son of William McCOOL.

Obviously, I have several McCOOLs to sort out and errors in my database.  I've made an assumption that the John P. McCOOL listed in the will abstract was Thomas's son and the same as John B. Assumptions are dangerous in genealogy, and I should wait until I receive verification.

Marriage of William Smith to Prudence Maxson

Source: "Ohio, County Marriages, 1790-1950," index and images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org): accessed 30 July 2011. entry for William Smith and Prudence Maxson, married 5 October 1836; citing Marriage Records, FHL microfilm 466399; Clark County Courthouse, Springfield, Ohio.

Spent some time searching through Ohio marriage records database at FamilySearch and made a discovery - I had the date wrong in my database for the marriage of my paternal 3rd-great grandparents, William SMITH and Prudence MAXSON.

The image clearly shows they were married on the 5th of October 1836 in Clark County, Ohio.  Previously, I had the date as the 3rd of October 1836 without knowing the county.  Both the "Biographical and Historical Record of Jay County, Indiana (1887) and "The Maxson Family. Descendants of John Maxson and Mary Mosher of Westerly, Rhode Island" (1954) by Walter Brown had this incorrect date.  Brown probably received his information from the 1887 history.

It was good to get the correct date, and even better to confirm the place of their marriage.  Previously, I had searched Jay County, Indiana for a record - but their marriage date was too early for that county.  The families were from the Clark County, Ohio area prior to the move to Jay County by the time of the 1840 census.

Now on to search for the rest of the families in Ohio...

A Little Wiki Today

Took a little time today to learn how to update information on Wikipedia about my distant relative, Harry Pierpont.  Harry has been one of my favorite research subjects of late.

As I've blogged about before, it was Harry's page on Wikipedia that first led me to realize we may have a genealogical connection.   Since then I've enjoyed researching articles about his robberies and life of crime.  Just this week I managed to locate a few new articles for future Black Sheep Sunday posts.

Because his page was lacking documentation, I decided to add sections on his Execution and Burial.  Using information such as his death certificate from FamilySearch site and his tombstone photo at FindAGrave, I added source citations to these sections.

Though I've had an account at Wikipedia for several years, I had never used the account to add information to a page or to create on of my own.  The process was relatively easy to do, and I hope to add sections in the future to Harry's page and update information about his Indiana bank robberies.

Update (6/17): Had so much fun that before bed, continued to update Harry's page and added information about three of his early robberies.
