Cemetery Plots Make a Nice Christmas Gift

One of the more amusing (at least to me) incidents in my family history research was the story related to me by mother regarding an interesting Christmas gift that her parents received from my great-grandparents.

Apparently one year for Christmas my great-grandparents, Virgil and Edna Wright, gave all of their children cemetery plots for a Christmas gift. Now this may not have seemed like a great gift at the time, but everyone will eventually die - and planning ahead makes good sense. Today my grandfather and grandmother are buried right next to my great-grandparents because of this gift.

In light of the family dynamic, the gift makes sense - afterall, the 80 acres that the family farm sat one were divided into thirds, with one great-aunt on the east and the other on the west. When the house passed down into my immediate family, I grew up having great-aunts on both sides. A very tight knit family, indeed.

Pre-planning for one's funeral is a good idea, and I'll admit that I wouldn't mind if I received a cemetery plot as a Christmas gift. Although, I think I would prefer to be buried at Park Cemetery closer to cousin James Dean. For some reason, I've always enjoyed that look and feel of that cemetery.

We're just a few days away from Christmas and there are many gifts to be received. No matter what I receive, I'm sure that it won't top my great-grandparents for the most unusual gift.

Pearl Harbor : Great-Uncle John High

Pearl Harbor, the "day that will live in infamy", touched my immediate family in a number of ways. Not only did my grandfather and several great-uncles enlist to fight the Japanese - but my great-uncle John High was on board the U.S.S. Oklahoma on that fateful day.

I didn't get much opportunity to ever really talk to him about his experiences, but I do know that I'm thankful to God that he survived the attack.

Updating FindAGrave Memorial Pages

Today I spent a little bit of time updating and adding a few memorial pages to FindAGrave. If you haven't checked out that site, I would encourage you to do so. Right now, my plans are to continue to add memorial pages for as many relatives as I can and request photos of their tombstones. So far, I've had success with photographs of tombstones as far away as Massachusetts and Iowa.

Kahre Connections

After working recently on another line for my daughter, I stumbled upon a WorldConnect database that had quite a bit of information on the Kahre family. I posted a "Post-Em" but have not received a reply. Much of the information appears to have come from a book entitled "The Kahre Connection" by J. Elwyn Kahre. A Google search turned up the title on Amazon.com but it was listed as unavailable.

My daughter's maternal 4th-great grandmother was Anna Maria Louisa Catherine Kahre, born April 25, 1840 in Kummerdingsen, Westphalia and died October 11, 1915 in Evansville, Vanderburgh Co., IN. She was the daughter of Heinrich Wilhelm and Marie Caroline Wilhelmina (Korff) Kahre. She married Karl Louis/Ludwig Ritt on July 28, 1864 in Vanderburgh Co., IN.

I will take the information from this database with a grain of salt, but it does give quite a few interesting clues - and traces the Kahre line back into the late 1690's.

Genealogy by Telephone

Almost a month and a half ago, I received an email from my sister-in-law telling me that a man named Mark Wilkins had called and left a message on their answering machine wanting to talk about family history. Being the procrastinator that I am, I finally decided to call Mr. Wilkins today and find out what branch of the family tree he was from.

Turns out that he is related to my daughter's ancestry, through the Chivlare and Followay lines down in Warrick Co., IN. Interestingly, my Senior Pastor at Sunnycrest Baptist in Marion is named Scott Wilkins, and is from the Owensboro, KY area where Mark Wilkins has family, so it may be a small world after all.

We spent over a half hour on the phone sharing information, and he promised to send me some papers that he had collected. Seems that a lady has been working on the Followay line - which may include some Cherokee blood - and has promised to send Mark a book on the family tree. She had somehow run across my name and information through one of my internet posts, and that is how he contacted me.

Hopefully, after Thanksgiving, he will have this book and more information on the Followay line, and in the meantime he is suppossed to send me what he has on the Chivlare line. As I told him, even though it is not my direct line, I'm interested in preserving this history for my daughter.

Educational Level of Our Ancestors

One of the more interesting tidbits of family history I have been dealing with recently has been the various educational levels of my ancestors and family members. In looking at the census images from 100+ years ago, I find it fascinating to see the differences between life in the 1900s (and earlier) and life today.

Today we take it for granted that the majority of our citizens can read and write or speak English. Yet many of the family records that I have been working with, particularly in the rural areas, the educational opportunities were severely limited. Many times the wife was the one who could read and write, and perhaps the children already had jobs working on the farm by the time they were sixteen or so. Contrast that with today and my own children, who do not have a job at that age, but yet have been receiving an excellent education.

Most of the families I've been dealing with have been native born, so speaking English was not a problem. Yet I wonder how they were able to communicate in their daily lives when so many of them could not read or write. I imagine that for many of them, the Bible was their primer, and they were self taught or taught by other relatives, as the demands of farm life didn't allow for organized schooling.
