Jacob Lewis household - Huntington Co., IN

The Jacob LEWIS family appears in the 1880 census of Jefferson Twp., Huntington Co., IN. Jacob was my wife's maternal 2nd-great grandfather, the son of Solomon and Margaret (RHINEHART) LEWIS.

Jacob is a farmer with his second wife, Mary keeping house. They have a new son, Amberson, who was born October of the census year. Jacob's son from his first marriage, Hollace E. was also listed.

Both Jacob and Mary were born in Indiana; with Jacob's father being born in Ohio and his mother in Indiana. Mary's father was listed as being born in South Carolina and her mother from Kentucky.

Solomon Lewis family - Huntington Co., IN

The Solomon LEWIS family was enumerated in the 1860 & 1870 census of Jefferson Twp., Huntington Co., IN. Solomon was my wife 's maternal 3rd-great grandfather, the son of Nathaniel and Nancy Ann (SNIDER) LEWIS.

Solomon's occupation was that of a farmer, with a real estate valued at $4000 in 1860 and $8000 in 1870; as well as a personal estate valued at $800 in 1860 and $1380 in 1870. The 1870 census indicated that both Solomon and wife Margaret could not write, and Margaret could not read.

The 1860 census listed Margaret's birthplace as Indiana and the 1870 listed her birthplace as Ohio. Other sources state that she was born in Henry Co., IN.

By 1870, daughter's Christina and Isabella were married and listed with their own families.

Samuel Lewis family - Miami Co., IN

The Samuel LEWIS family was enumerated in the 1860 & 1870 census of Richland Twp., Miami Co., IN. Samuel was my wife's maternal third-great granduncle, the son of Nathaniel and Nancy Ann (SNIDER) LEWIS.

Samuel was a farmer with a real estate value of $6500 in 1860 and a personal estate valued at $1500. By 1870, his real estate was valued at $8000 and his personal estate was valued at $2500. Samuel was born in Ohio, while his wife Mary was born in Virginia. All of their children were born in Indiana.

Son Aaron was living next door by 1870, and eldest daughter Nancy was still living at home at age 27 in the 1870 census. All of the children had attended school within the year.
