March Garden Tips

Gardening has been such a big part of the family tradition that I thought I'd better get as much information written down from mom and dad as possible to pass on.

If you haven't done so already, prune the grapes.   I usually do them around President's Day.  Plant pansies in ground or pots.  Seed annuals indoors.  Apply dormant spray to fruit trees before new growth appears.   Prune winter-damaged hedges.   Trim more at top than bottom to allow light to reach lower branches.  Prune young trees before they leaf out.   Remove dead and crossing branches.   Clean up and mulch all existing beds.  Trim yews, junipers, arborvitae, and hemlock.   When weather premits, mow lawn short to remove dead grass.  Cut back perennials and ornamental grasses before new growth appears.  Remove all of the small, weak canes on raspberries. Cut back the lateral branches to 18 inches.

Correspondence will a researcher of the HALL family of Highland County, Ohio has led me to research more about Susanna (WRIGHT) HALL OGDEN, daughter of George and Elizabeth (ROBINS) WRIGHT.  She was the younger sister of my maternal 4x great-grandfather, John WRIGHT.

Susanna was born May 21, 1819 in Brown County, Ohio1,2.  On October 29, 1840 in Brown County, Ohio, she married William Riley HALL1,2,3, son of Patrick and Mary (REESE) HALL.

On September 13, 1850, William and Susanna were enumerated in Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio4.  William's occupation was that of a farmer with real estate valued at $ 1000.  He was aged 32 and born in Ohio. Wife Susanna was listed as aged 31, also born in Ohio.  Living in the household with them is an unidentified Edmund Hesler, age 4, born in Ohio.

Susanna and William were living next door to William's brother, John Reese Hall and his wife Lucrieta.  The Alexander Bratten family was their other neighbor.

William died May 22, 1855 and is buried in the Hall cemetery, Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio3.  Susanna married secondly to Sidney Ogden.

On June 25, 1860, Sidney and Susan were enumerated in Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio5.  Sidney's occupation was that of a farmer with real estate valued at $ 1800 and a personal estate valued at $ 285.  He was aged 46 and born in New York.  Wife Susan was listed as age 41, born in Ohio.  Living in the household were two children of Sidney's first marriage, Samantha, aged 15 and John, aged 8, both born in Ohio.  Also in the household were a servant, Elizabeth Hutchens [?] and a farm laborer, John Webber [?].  Both of their names were very hard to read.

Living next door to them was a Samuel and Rebecca WARDLOW and a widowed Mary HALL.  Not sure of the relationships, but the Wright and Wardlow families were known to be related in Brown County.

On June 8, 1870, Sidney and Susan were enumerated in Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio6.  Sidney's occupation was listed as a farmer with real estate valued at $ 1080 and a personal estate valued at $ 261.  He was aged 56 and born in New York.  Wife Susan was listed as age 51, born in Ohio.

On June 10, 1880, Sidney and Susan were enumerated in Clay Township, Highland County, Ohio7.  Sidney's occupation was listed as blacksmith.  He was born in New York and both of his parents were as well.  Wife Susan was listed as age 61, born in Ohio with both parents born in Pennsylvania.

To date I have not yet discovered the dates of death or burial place of Sidney and Susan.
