Surname Saturday : Schafer

The SCHAFER line is in Corinne's maternal line.  The surname is of Germanic origin, with multiple spelling variations.  No connection yet between this line and her SCHAEFFER line.


Ahnentafel # 49: Elizabeth Schafer (c1839-bef1887).  Elizabeth was born circa 1839 in Hesse-Darmstadt, according to the 1870 census.  She married William Miller (c1827-1901) on January 31, 1856 in Posey County, Indiana.  They raised 9 children in Posey County, Indiana and Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.  William died July 24, 1901 in Kasson, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.  Elizabeth died between 1875 and 1887, when William remarried.

1818: Catherine JACOBS born in Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania.  Catherine was the daughter of David JACOBS and Barbara BYERS.

1850: Larkin M. SWAFFORD married Catherine Jane STILES in Monroe County, Indiana.  Larkin was the son of Larkin SWAFFORD and Nancy ________.


1851: Beverly CHEW died in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Beverly was the son of John CHEW and Ann FOX.


1855: William Solon KING born in Madison County, Indiana.  William was the son of Thomas KING and Martha E. HAGGERTY.


1858: Arvilla BEVAN born.  Arvilla was the daughter of Stacy BEVAN and Sarah BEALS.


1866: Landon DAVIS born in Long Run, West Virginia.  Landon was the son of Stillman Coon DAVIS and Keziah DAVIS.


1867: Levi W. PETRY married Susannah COFFMAN.  Levi was the son of Charles PETRY and Susannah WEHRLY.


1871: Jonathan MAXSON married Lorencie Honore HAVEN in West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa.  Jonathan was the son of William MAXSON and Delilah BOWLAND.


1875: Alice Beryl MAXSON born in West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa.  Alice was the daughter of Jonathan MAXSON and Lorencie Honore HAVEN.


1881: Emma E. WOODS born.  Emma was the daughter of William Richard WOODS and Elizabeth Jane HILL.


1886: Aaron BALES died in Chautauqua County, Kansas.  Aaron was the son of Aaron BALES and Alice MANIFOLD.

1898: John HEATON died.  John was the son of Townsend HEATON and Nancy Jane HALE.


1908: Jesse William COVEY married Myrtle May COVEY in Ray County, Missouri.  Jesse was the son of Andrew Woolsey COVEY and Rebecca A. SWAFFORD.


1972: Sylvia Maxine HELLYER died in Platte County, Missouri.  Sylvia was the daughter of John William SWAFFORD and Viola Mae MILLER.


1974: Robert Wayne BURNINE died in Richmond, Missouri.  Robert was the son of Cleatus Van BURNINE and Elsie Lee SWAFFORD.


1980: John Leland LeMASTER Sr. died in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.  John was the son of Luman Cooper LeMASTERS and Barbara Isabel WEHRLY.

Obituary : Catharine (Young) Metzner

METZNER - Catharine Young Metzner was born in France, July 19, 1819.  She came to this country with her parents in 1834.  She was married to John Metzner, a native of Germany, at Newark, Ohio, in 1839.  To this union was born 11 children.  Her husband and 7 children preceded her in death.  There remain to follow, 4 children, 21 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren and a host of other friends.  She was converted at an early age and lived a consistent life for more than 70 years.  She was a member of our church at Mt. Zion.  She died June 22, 1910, at the home of her daughter at Rome City, Ind., with whom she had made her home for the past nine years.  She selected the 23d Psalm for her funeral text.     J.E. Catharine (YOUNG) METZNER (1819-1910) was my paternal 3x great-grandmother, the daughter of Nicholas and Salome (YOUNG) YOUNG.  She married John METZNER November 4, 1839 in Newark, Licking County, Ohio.  The names of her 11 children were: John Adam, Henry, William F., George W., Louis Napoleon, Caroline H., Catherine E., Wesley T., Samantha E., Martha J., and Mary A.   Catharine is buried in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana.


The daughter living in Rome City, Indiana, must have been the youngest, Mary A. (METZNER) HUEY, as Catharine was enumerated in their household in the 1910 census of Orange Township, Noble County, Indiana.
