Exploratory Data Analysis : June Kirk (Gilliland) Lambertson (1898-1951)

June Kirk (Gilliland) Lambertson (1898-1951) was my maternal great-grandmother.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical facts I have discovered about her.

1. Vital records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

June was born June 11, 1898 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana1.  She is listed as "Infant (female) Davis" and her parents are listed as Atkinson and Ida Davis.

          1.1.1. Birth notice in newspaper

I have not been able to discover any mention of June's birth in the local newspapers of the time period.

          1.1.2. Bible record

I am not aware of any surviving Bible records of the Davis or Gilliland family.

          1.1.3. Baptismal record

I am not aware of any baptismal records for June, though I do not know the church affiliation of the family.

          1.1.4. Adoption record

I am not aware of any official adoption records for June, but she did adopt the Gilliland surname, the surname of her grandmother and step-grandfather.  June was raised by her grandmother, Mary Ellen (Swafford) Gilliland and her husband, Robert Gilliland, after the death of June's mother, Ida.  There may be records in either Monroe County, Indiana or Owen County, Indiana that would show guardianship that need to be added to my "to-do" list for further research.

     1.2. Marriage license

June was married on June 28, 1917 in Monroe County, Indiana to Clemon Beals Lambertson2,3.  I do not yet have a copy of their marriage license.  It is recorded in Book 16, page 230, according to an index. I have added this to my "to-do" list for further research.

          1.2.1. Marriage notice in newspaper

Will need to search out mention of their wedding in local Bloomington, as well as Noblesville newspapers on my next research trip.

          1.2.2. Anniversary notice

Will need to search out mention of their anniversary in local newspapers, particularly in Elwood.

          1.2.3. Divorce decree

There is no indication that a divorce ever occurred, though a search of the court records has not been completed.

     1.3. Death certificate

June died March 20, 1951 in Elwood, Madison County, Indiana4.  Her death certificate lists the cause of death as "Acute Myocardial Infarction".  The certifying physician was Marion C. Drake, M.D.

          1.3.1. Obituary in newspaper

June's obituary appeared in the March 21, 1951 edition of the Elwood Call-Leader3 and the March 21, 1951 edition of the Alexandria Times-Tribune2.  I need to check and see if there were other newspapers, such as in Anderson, Indiana, that might have also carried her obituary.

          1.3.2. Funeral home record

June's funeral was conducted at the Jackley Funeral Home in Elwood.  I have visited the funeral home and obtained a copy of the record, but have not sourced it in my database yet!  Definitely need to add this to my "to-do" list.

          1.3.3. Tombstone photograph

June's tombstone in the Elwood City Cemetery has been photographed.  It lists her as "Mother"  June K. 1898-1951, and lists "Father" Clemon B. 1898-1994.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1930 Federal Census

On April 10, 1930, June was enumerated in the Clemon Lambertson household in the 2nd Ward, City of Elwood, Pipe Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana5, as June Lambertson, wife, age 31, married, born in Indiana.  Her father and mother were both listed as being born in Indiana.  She listed no occupation, and could read and write and spoke English.  She had been married for 18 years.

          2.1.2. 1920 Federal Census

On January 14, 1920, June was enumerated in the Clemon Lambertson household in the 2nd Ward, City of Elwood, Duck Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana6, as June Lambertson, wife, age 21, married, born in Indiana.  Her father and mother were both listed as being born in Indiana.  She listed no occupation, and could read and write and spoke English.

          2.1.3. 1910 Federal Census

On May 3, 1910, June was enumerated in the Robert F. Gilliland household in Richland Township, Monroe County, Indiana7, as June K. Gilliland, stepdaughter, age 11, born in Indiana.  Her father was listed as being born in the United States and her mother as born in Indiana.  She could read and write.

          2.1.4. 1900 Federal Census

I have been unable to locate June in the 1900 census.  She should be approximately two years old.  I believe that I've located her mother, Ida, at the "Door of Hope" rescue mission in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana in 1900, but no June.  June's sister, Pansy, is enumerated with her grandmother and stepgrandfather, Robert and Mary Gilliland in Clay Township, Owen County, Indiana, but again, no June.  She was either missed or was with some other relative that I've yet to find.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1931.  These however, were merely for the purposes of determining legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agriculture Census Records

I have not yet examined these types of census records to see what information might come to light.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Not applicable, as June was a female.

     3.2. Pension Records

          Not applicable.

     3.3. Service Records

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Madison County, Indiana.  June spent her adult life in Madison County.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Madison County published a plat map in 1880, 1891, 1893, 1901, 1910, 1915, 1921, 1923, 1931 and 1940 that may be relevant to my search on the Lambertson family.
