Ord Otterbein LeMaster (1876-1937) was my paternal great-granduncle. What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about him.
1. Vital Records
1.1. Birth Certificate
Ord was born July 1, 1876 in Jay County, Indiana. Birth records do not start in Jay County, Indiana until 1882, so there is no official certificate of birth.
1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper
Will need to search contemporary newspapers to see if mention was made of Ord's birth.
1.1.2. Bible Record
I am not aware of any surviving Bible records of the LeMaster family. Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one does exist.
1.1.3. Baptismal Record
I am not aware of any baptismal record for Ord. The family was affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal church in Salamonia, Indiana.
1.1.4. Adoption Record
There is no indication that Ord was adopted.
1.2. Marriage License
Ord married Emma W.G. Garmhausen on June 12, 1907 in Auglaize County, Ohio1. Emma was the aunt of Helen Garmhausen, the wife of Ord's brother, Vernon.
Their marriage record was the subject of a previous post.
1.2.1. Marriage notice in newspaper
Will need to search contemporary newspapers to see if mention was made of Ord and Emma's nuptials.
1.2.2. Anniversary notice
Ord and Emma's 25th wedding anniversary would have been June 12, 1932. Will need to search contemporary newspapers to see if any mention was made of an anniversary celebration.
1.2.3. Divorce decree
There is no indication that Ord and Emma were ever divorced.
1.3. Death Certificate
Ord died September 15, 1937 in Clinton, Shelby County, Ohio2. The cause of death was an intestinal obstruction (lodgement of a gallstone).
1.3.1. Obituary in newspaper
Ord's obituary was mentioned in the September 15, 1937 edition of the Portland, Indiana Commercial-Review3.
Will need to search contemporary newspapers in Shelby County, Ohio for mention of his death.
1.3.2. Funeral home records
I do not know what funeral home handled the arrangements. Once I obtain a local copy of his obituary, I will know which funeral home to contact for records.
1.3.3. Tombstone photograph
Ord is buried in the Graceland Cemetery in Shelby County, Ohio3. I need to obtain a photograph of his tombstone.
2. Census Records
2.1. Federal Census Records
2.1.1. 1930 Federal Census
On April 2, 1930, Ord was enumerated as head of household in Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio4, as Ord O. LeMaster, age 54 Physician. He was born in Indiana, his father born in Ohio and mother born in New Jersey. His home was valued at $ 8000. Also living in the household were wife, Emma, age 48, born in Ohio.
2.1.2. 1920 Federal Census
On January 5, 1920, Ord was enumerated as head of household in Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio5, as Ord O. LeMaster, age 43, Physician. He was born in Indiana, and both of his parents were listed as born in Indiana. He owned his home free of mortgage. Living in the household were wife, Emma, age 38, born in Indiana, and daughter, Isabel, age 9, born in Indiana.
2.1.3. 1910 Federal Census
On May 10, 1910, Ord was enumerated as head of household in Kettersville, Shelby County, Ohio6, as Dr. O.O. LeMaster, age 33, Physician. He was born in Ohio, with his father listed as born in Germany and mother in Ohio. Living in the household was his wife, Emma, age 28, born in Ohio, and father-in-law, Charles Garmhausen, age 72, born in Ohio.
2.1.4 1900 Federal Census
On June 4, 1900, Ord was enumerated in the Luman C. Lemasters household in Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana7, as Ord O., son, age 24, Medical student, born in Indiana. His father was born in Ohio and mother born in New Jersey.
2.1.5. 1880 Federal Census
On June 5, 1880, Ord was enumerated in the Walker Lemasters household in Madison Towship, Jay County, Indiana8, as Ottie, son, age 4, born in Indiana. His father was born in Ohio and his mother in New Jersey.
2.2. State Census Records
Many states took their own census, but Ohio was not one of them.
The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913 and 1921. These, however, were merely for the purposes of legislative apportionment.
2.3. Agricultural Census Records
I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what light they might shed on the LeMaster farm.
3. Military Records
3.1. Draft Registration
Ord registered for the draft during World War I on September 12, 19189, when he was 42 years old. At the time he was living at 822 South Ohio street in Sidney, Shelby County, Ohio. His registration card shows he was a natural born citizen, born January 4, 1876. His occupation was that of a physician. His nearest living relative was his wife, Emma LeMaster. He was described as being of medium height and build, with dark hair. I could not read the description of his eyes.
3.2. Pension Records
I am not aware of any record of military service that would qualify Ord for a pension.
3.3. Service Records
I am not aware of any military service by Ord.
4. Land Records
4.1. Deed Records
Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Shelby County, Ohio to see what items might mention Ord. Will add this to my "to-do" list for my next research trip.
4.2. Plat map / county map
I need to contact the local historical society to see what types of plat maps were published in Shelby County, Ohio that might aid in my research.
5. Supplemental records
Supplemental records available for research for Ord include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records. Will add these to my "to-do" list for my next research trip.
