Ancestry Hint : June Lambertson Obituary, 1951 Bloomington Herald-Telephone

Working through the 'shaky leaf' hints on my maternal side and came across a new one for my great-grandmother, June (Davis) Lambertson (1898-1951).   This hint was for an obituary in an off-site database, the Monroe County, Indiana Obituary Index maintained by the Monroe County Public Library in Bloomington.

Taking a look at the site, June's obituary was published in the Bloomington Herald-Telephone in their March 21, 1951 edition.  I was previously unaware of this obituary, and have added it to my Rootsmagic database list of "to-do" items.

I wonder if the obituary is much different than the local ones that I've already written about from the Elwood Call-Leader?  Perhaps additional local family were mentioned in the Bloomington paper.

June was born the daughter of Ida Davis, but raised by her grandmother and step-grandfather under the Gilliland name in the Owen County/Monroe County, Indiana area.  June married June 28, 1917 in Monroe County, Indiana to Clemon Beals Lambertson.

At the time of her death, she would have been survived by a sister, Pansy, of Crawfordsville.  Was the obituary published in Bloomington so that distant cousins would see it?

Grandma June Gilliland Baptized

Elletsville Farm
February 9, 1911, page 1

Ellettsville Baptist Church News

On Saturday Night the pastor baptized eight converts in the baptistry at the Baptist Church at Ellettsville.  The candidates were Mr. W.E. Gilliland, Mrs. Maude Gilliland, Miss June Gilliland, Miss Agnes McNeely, Miss Helen Bauer, Miss Eva Buchana, Mrs. Mary Manors, and Master Albert Gillaspy.

----
Found this notice while searching newspapers at NewspaperArchive.com for mention of my relatives.

The Miss June Gilliland was my maternal great-grandmother.  The W.E. Gilliland was her uncle, William Everett Gilliland and the Maude Gilliland was William's wife, Maude Nell (Arthur) Gilliland.  June was 12 years old at the time, William was 25.

William Everett Gillilland was the son of Robert Farrell and Mary Ellen (Swafford) Gilliland.  Mary was the grandmother of June Gilliland, and raised her after her mother's death.

This tidbit of my ancestor's life was interesting to find, and is also evidence that June was using the Gilliland name, rather than her birth name of Davis.  June was a Baptist later in life in Elwood, Indiana as well.

GEDmatch Comparison : Cousin Judy

Submitted my raw DNA file from 23andMe to the free third party tool, GEDmatch.com for comparison.  GEDmatch allows users from the three main testing sites, 23andMe, FamilyTreeDNA and Ancestry.com upload their raw data files and then the software will compare your autosomal DNA for matches.

While waiting on my file M170652 to be processed for the "one to many" matches, I was able to compare my file using the "one to one" match of my cousin, Judy.  We had corresponded years ago, and recently reconnected on Facebook. Judy and I connect on my maternal side and has her mother's file at GEDmatch.

This was the comparison that GEDmatch did on the DNA file of Mildred Crane Moore and myself.

The prediction was 3.4 generations to the MRCA (most recent common ancestor).

Mary Ellen Swafford (common ancestor)
Ida Davis & unknown                               Mary Florence Gilliland & Thomas Crane  (half sisters)
June Gilliland & Clemon Lambertson            Mildred Louise Crane & Merrill L. Moore (1st cousins)
Bonnie Lambertson & William Wright           Judy Moore & Troy Hill (2nd cousins)
Gloria Wright & Ord LeMaster
Travis LeMaster

Judy and my mom are 2nd cousins once removed, and Judy and I are 2nd cousins twice removed.  Though we already knew this on paper, it's nice to have the connection confirmed through DNA.

I'm eagerly awaiting GEDmatch fully processing my files, so that I can match with other cousins and begin sharing.  Another feature of the site is the ability to compare GEDCOMs.  I've uploaded a GEDCOM there as well, and the file number is 924805.

Death Notice : Ida (Davis) Morris, 1900

Ellettsville Farm, Ellettsville, Indiana
August 4, 1900, page 2
Mrs. Ida Davis Morris, daughter of Mrs. Bob Gilland, died at the home of the latter near this place on Wednesday.

---
This is the death notice of my maternal 2nd-great grandmother, Ida (Davis) Morris.  She died August 2, 1900 in Clay Township, Owen County, Indiana of tuberculosis.  The Mrs. Bob Gilland (actually Gilliland) was Mary Ellen (Swafford) Davis Gilliland.

Ida was only 26 years old when she died of tuberculosis, leaving two small children, Pansy and June, to be raised by Ida's mother and step-father.

I've been able to find a bit of good information lately through my NewspaperArchive subscription.  Newspaper columns like this were the Facebook of the early 20th century.

Grandma June's Birth Announcement

Indianapolis Sun, Indianapolis, Indiana
June 13, 1898 page 2
Located my maternal great-grandmother, June Davis' birth announcement in the Indianapolis Sun newspaper of June 13, 1898.

The birth announcement lists her only as a girl born to Atkinson and Ida Davis, just as her birth certificate lists.  Instead of a street address, the residence is listed as "Door of Hope".

Door of Hope was associated with the Wheeler Mission in Indianapolis and was established as a home for fallen women.  I have previously found Ida living at the Door of Hope in the 1900 census, this confirms that she was there in 1898 as well.  I remember my grandmother, Bonnie, when I had asked where her mother was born, saying that June was born in the city of Hope.  For a long time, I had assumed this was Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana, where incidentally, there were Gilliland families.  Gilliland was the surname that June was raised with.  After her mother, Ida, died, June and her sister were raised by their grandmother, Mary Ellen (Swafford) Davis Gilliland.  Keeping this straight has been quite a lot of fun.

I have not been able to determine if the father listed on June's birth certificate is an Atkinson Davis or a _______ Atkinson.  I have not been able to locate an Atkinson Davis in Indianapolis are at the time.  This might be a mystery that is never solved.  Perhaps there is a bastardy proceeding somewhere that might shed some light.

Exploratory Data Analysis: Pansy (Davis) Decker Timm (1894-1968)

Peter W. Decker & Pansy (Davis) Decker, undated photograph

Pansy (Davis) Decker Timm (1894-1968) was my maternal great-grandaunt.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about her.

1. Vital Records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

Pansy was born December 11, 18941.  The location is not definitely known, probably Monroe County, Indiana or Owen County, Indiana.  A search of the W.P.A. index for these counties has been fruitless.  One source stated that Pansy was born December 11, 1895 in Ellettsville, Monroe County, Indiana2.

The father of both Pansy and her sister, June (my great-grandmother) is unknown and has been the subject of a previous post.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

Will need to search contemporary newspapers to see if mention was made of Pansy's birth.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am not aware of any surviving Bible record for the Davis or Gilliland family.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one might be located.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

I am not aware of any baptismal record for Pansy at this time, nor do I know for sure any church affiliation.  Her grandmother, Mary, was associated with the Baptist denomination.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

I have found no official record of any adoption of Pansy or her sister June.  However, both were raised by their maternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Robert and Mary Ellen (Swafford) Gilliland, and used the Gilliland surname.  Whether or not this adoption was made official through a court, I do not know and will have to seek out records in both Owen and Monroe Counties, Indiana to be sure.

     1.2. Marriage license

Pansy married on December 11, 1912 in Monroe County, Indiana to Peter W. Decker.

Pansy married in 1955 to Raymond Fred Timm.

          1.2.1. Marriage notice in newspaper

Will need to search out contemporary newspapers to see if their nuptials were mentioned.

          1.2.2. Anniversary notice

Pansy and Peter's 25th wedding anniversary would have been December 11, 1937.  Need to search out the local newspapers to see if mention was made.

          1.2.3. Divorce decree

There is no indication of any Pansy and Peter were ever divorced.

     1.3. Death Certificate

Pansy died on January 26, 1968 in Monticello, White County, Indiana.  I do not have a copy of her death certificate.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.1. Obituary in newspaper

Pansy's obituary was published in the January 27, 1968 Crawfordsville Journal-Review3.  I've written about her obituary in a previous post.

I need to search out other area newspapers to see if they also mentioned her death.

          1.3.2. Funeral home records

According to her obituary, the Anfenberg Funeral Home in Monticello handled her funeral arrangements.  I need to add contacting them for more information to my list of "to-do" items.

          1.3.3. Tombstone photograph

Pansy's tombstone has been photographed in the Freedom Cemetery.  Her memorial page at the Find A Grave website contains a photograph.

The transcription reads: "Pansy Decker Timm Dec. 11, 1894-Jan. 26, 1968".4

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1940 Federal Census

On April 1, 1940, Pansy was enumerated in the Peter W. Decker household in Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana5, as Pansy L. Decker, age 45, housewife, born in Indiana.  Living in the household were her husband, Peter W., age 50, and daughter Wandalee, age 16.  According to the handwritten notes on the margin of the census, the information was provided by Peter Decker's sister-in-law.  I am not sure who this might be.  According to the census, the family was living at 702 Mill Street, and was living at the same location in 1935.

          2.1.2. 1930 Federal Census

On April 28, 1930, Pansy was enumerated in the Peter W. Decker household in Brown Township, Montgomery County, Indiana6, as Pansy Decker, age 36, born in Indiana.  She was age 17 at her first marriage, could read and write and spoke English.  Her mother and father were born in Indiana, and no occupation was listed.  Also in the household was husband, Peter W., age 39, born Indiana; son Wilbur, age 12, son Jeane, age 9, daughter Wandalee, age 9, and daughter Virginia, age 4 and Pansy's mother, Mary Gilliland, age 75.

          2.1.3. 1920 Federal Census

On January 6, 1920, Pansy was enumerated in the Ernest Patton household in Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana7, as Pansy Decker, sister-in-law, age 25, born in Indiana.  She could read and write and spoke English; and both parents were listed as born in Indiana.  Also in the household were her husband, P.W. Decker, age 29, born in Indiana; and son Wilbur, age 1 1/2 years.

          2.1.4. 1910 Federal Census

On May 3, 1910, Pansy was enumerated in the Robert F. Gilliland household in Richland Township, Monroe County, Indiana8, as Pansy L. Gilliland, stepgranddaughter, age 15, born in Indiana.  She could read and write and spoke English.  Both of her parents were born in Indiana.

          2.1.5. 1900 Federal Census

On June 9, 1900, Pansy was enumerated in the Robert Gilliland household in Clay Township, Owen County, Indiana9, as Pansy Davis, granddaughter, born December 1894 in Indiana.  She could read and write and spoke English. Both of her parents were born in Indiana.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1921.  These, however, were merely for the purpose of determining legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what light it might shed on the Gilliland or Decker farms.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Not applicable, as Pansy was female.

     3.2. Pension Records

I am not aware of any military service by father or husband that would have made Pansy eligible to receive a military pension.

     3.3. Service Records

Not applicable, as Pansy was female.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Monroe County, Indiana and Montgomery County, Indiana, to see what records might mention Pansy.  Will add this to my "to-do" list for future research trips.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Monroe County published plat maps in 1920, 1923, 1927 and 1928 that might be relevant to my research.

Montgomery County published plat maps in 1936, 1941, and 1947 that might be relevant to my research.

5. Supplemental Records

Supplemental records available to research for Pansy include city/county directories, court records and will and probate records.  Will add these to my "to-do" list for future research trips.

Where Was She Buried?

My latest post on the data I have collected for my 2x-great grandmother Ida had me re-examining some data (which was the point of the posts) I had collected about her .  Particularly, I was focusing on her death certificate in an attempt to determine where she is buried.

The death certificate only states the place of burial as “M.E. Cemetery” and the funeral director was “C.H. McNeely”.    The question in my mind is whether Ida was buried in Owen County or Monroe County.

Ida’s mother, Mary (Swafford) Gilliland is buried in Elletsville, Monroe County in the Methodist cemetery, and I believe that Ida may be buried there as well, but in an unmarked grave.  Photographs of Mary's tombstone are found at FindAGrave.  Also in the same cemetery is a Columbus Hale McNeely, whom I believe to be the C.H. McNeely listed on Ida's death certificate.

I reached out to the Monroe County Public Library in Bloomington and spoke to Christine at their Indiana Room (812-349-3080).  She was very helpful and told me she would check into the records they might have.  I was hoping that they  might have records on McNeely and the funeral home.

I also placed a call to the Monroe County History Center (812-337-2517) and spoke to their genealogy library.  They also told me they would do some research, and that the McNeely family was well known in the Elletsville area.

Doing some online checking, I also discovered that there is a Methodist Cemetery Association of Elletsville, located at 708 W. Vine Street.  No contact phone or email was listed, so I will have to write them to see if they have any information on who is buried in the plot.

I spoke to Christine later in the day and she was able to tell me about several McNeely's, but didn't have anything definite on C.H. McNeely as a funeral director.  She also did some checking on Ida, but had the same negative results that I did (ie. not found in 1900 census in Owen County).

I later received an email from the library manager at the Monroe County History Center who found an obituary for C.H. McNeely, which referenced him as an undertaker in Elletsville.  They were going to check with a local expert on Elletsville and get back with me regarding the existence of any funeral home records.

Hopefully these records are out there, I just haven't turned over all the leads. The letter to the cemetery association might turn up plot information about who is buried where, etc. and solve this mystery.

Exploratory Data Analysis : June Kirk (Gilliland) Lambertson (1898-1951)

June Kirk (Gilliland) Lambertson (1898-1951) was my maternal great-grandmother.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical facts I have discovered about her.

1. Vital records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

June was born June 11, 1898 in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana1.  She is listed as "Infant (female) Davis" and her parents are listed as Atkinson and Ida Davis.

          1.1.1. Birth notice in newspaper

I have not been able to discover any mention of June's birth in the local newspapers of the time period.

          1.1.2. Bible record

I am not aware of any surviving Bible records of the Davis or Gilliland family.

          1.1.3. Baptismal record

I am not aware of any baptismal records for June, though I do not know the church affiliation of the family.

          1.1.4. Adoption record

I am not aware of any official adoption records for June, but she did adopt the Gilliland surname, the surname of her grandmother and step-grandfather.  June was raised by her grandmother, Mary Ellen (Swafford) Gilliland and her husband, Robert Gilliland, after the death of June's mother, Ida.  There may be records in either Monroe County, Indiana or Owen County, Indiana that would show guardianship that need to be added to my "to-do" list for further research.

     1.2. Marriage license

June was married on June 28, 1917 in Monroe County, Indiana to Clemon Beals Lambertson2,3.  I do not yet have a copy of their marriage license.  It is recorded in Book 16, page 230, according to an index. I have added this to my "to-do" list for further research.

          1.2.1. Marriage notice in newspaper

Will need to search out mention of their wedding in local Bloomington, as well as Noblesville newspapers on my next research trip.

          1.2.2. Anniversary notice

Will need to search out mention of their anniversary in local newspapers, particularly in Elwood.

          1.2.3. Divorce decree

There is no indication that a divorce ever occurred, though a search of the court records has not been completed.

     1.3. Death certificate

June died March 20, 1951 in Elwood, Madison County, Indiana4.  Her death certificate lists the cause of death as "Acute Myocardial Infarction".  The certifying physician was Marion C. Drake, M.D.

          1.3.1. Obituary in newspaper

June's obituary appeared in the March 21, 1951 edition of the Elwood Call-Leader3 and the March 21, 1951 edition of the Alexandria Times-Tribune2.  I need to check and see if there were other newspapers, such as in Anderson, Indiana, that might have also carried her obituary.

          1.3.2. Funeral home record

June's funeral was conducted at the Jackley Funeral Home in Elwood.  I have visited the funeral home and obtained a copy of the record, but have not sourced it in my database yet!  Definitely need to add this to my "to-do" list.

          1.3.3. Tombstone photograph

June's tombstone in the Elwood City Cemetery has been photographed.  It lists her as "Mother"  June K. 1898-1951, and lists "Father" Clemon B. 1898-1994.

2. Census Records

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1930 Federal Census

On April 10, 1930, June was enumerated in the Clemon Lambertson household in the 2nd Ward, City of Elwood, Pipe Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana5, as June Lambertson, wife, age 31, married, born in Indiana.  Her father and mother were both listed as being born in Indiana.  She listed no occupation, and could read and write and spoke English.  She had been married for 18 years.

          2.1.2. 1920 Federal Census

On January 14, 1920, June was enumerated in the Clemon Lambertson household in the 2nd Ward, City of Elwood, Duck Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana6, as June Lambertson, wife, age 21, married, born in Indiana.  Her father and mother were both listed as being born in Indiana.  She listed no occupation, and could read and write and spoke English.

          2.1.3. 1910 Federal Census

On May 3, 1910, June was enumerated in the Robert F. Gilliland household in Richland Township, Monroe County, Indiana7, as June K. Gilliland, stepdaughter, age 11, born in Indiana.  Her father was listed as being born in the United States and her mother as born in Indiana.  She could read and write.

          2.1.4. 1900 Federal Census

I have been unable to locate June in the 1900 census.  She should be approximately two years old.  I believe that I've located her mother, Ida, at the "Door of Hope" rescue mission in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana in 1900, but no June.  June's sister, Pansy, is enumerated with her grandmother and stepgrandfather, Robert and Mary Gilliland in Clay Township, Owen County, Indiana, but again, no June.  She was either missed or was with some other relative that I've yet to find.

     2.2. State Census Records

The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1931.  These however, were merely for the purposes of determining legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agriculture Census Records

I have not yet examined these types of census records to see what information might come to light.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

Not applicable, as June was a female.

     3.2. Pension Records

          Not applicable.

     3.3. Service Records

          Not applicable

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed records

Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Madison County, Indiana.  June spent her adult life in Madison County.

4.2. Plat map / county map

Madison County published a plat map in 1880, 1891, 1893, 1901, 1910, 1915, 1921, 1923, 1931 and 1940 that may be relevant to my search on the Lambertson family.

5. Supplemental records

Supplemental records available to research for June include court records and will and probate records, as well as city directories for Elwood, Indiana.
A search of city directories in the Elwood, Indiana show June at the following address:
     1906 N F Street - 1924, 1925, 1927, 1929, 1931/32, 1935, 1938
