Cousin Bait : The First Week

It's been one week since I started my "cousin bait" posts entitled "On This Day..."  As mentioned previously, the purpose of these posts is to generate leads, discussion and hopefully make some connections with new cousins.

Though these posts make my blog look a bit odd, they are also revealing to me how much more information I need to document.

Though it's way to early to tell if these will be successful, I did receive three nibbles this week - though not sure if they were directly related to these posts.  Instead of receiving comments directly on the posts, I received emails and comments on other older posts relating to the surname, which lead me to believe that the "On This Day..." post led to a search of the blog.  If so, that would make my efforts worth it.

I made contact with a distant cousin on the HECK line - whose line comes through Nicholas HECK (1811-1891), son of Godfrey.  My direct line is through Mary (HECK) SHAW (1803-1890), Nicholas' older sister.  We are in the beginning stages of trading information.

I also made contact with a distant cousin on the PIERCE line - whose line comes through Albert Orlando PIERCE (1839-1920), son of Francis.  My direct line is through Edmund G. PIERCE (1837-1875), Albert's older brother.

Another comment came from a distant cousin on the ALLEN line - whose line comes through John BARKER (1771-1849), son of Hannah Allen Barker.  My direct line is through Abner BARKER (1768-    ), John's older brother.

So far, the fishing is fine...

Surname Saturday : SHAW

The SHAW surname is in my maternal line.  The origins of the surname are unknown at this time.

Stories and history:

Ahnentafel # 51: Elizabeth Shaw (1827-1900).  Elizabeth was born October 1827 either in Ohio, Indiana or Tennessee, according to census records.  She married December 5, 1847 in Madison County, Indiana to Daniel King (1820-1876).  Daniel was born September 3, 1820 in Ohio.  They raised 10 children in Jackson and Monroe Townships, Madison County, Indiana.  Daniel died February 24, 1876 in Frankton, Madison County, Indiana.  Elizabeth married secondly to William H. Cochran (1828-aft1900).  William was born April 1828 in Ohio.  Last record I've found for him is the 1900 census.  Elizabeth died October 10, 1900 in Frankton, Madison County, Indiana.  Both Daniel and Elizabeth are buried in the Howard Cemetery, Pipe Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana.

Ahnentafel # 102: William Shaw (1800-1849).  William was born January 28, 1800 in Pennsylvania.  He married August 29, 1822 in Brown County, Ohio to Mary Heck (c1803-1890).  Mary was born circa 1803 in Kentucky.  They raised 9 children in Brown County, Ohio and Fayette County, Indiana before moving to Madison County, Indiana.  Mary died August 12, 1890 in Madison County, Indiana.  William died September 25, 1849 in Madison County, Indiana.  Both are buried in the Prewitt Cemetery, Pipe Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana.

Daniel King (1820-1876)

Daniel KING (1820-1876) was my maternal third great-grandfather. The ethnic origins of the KING line are unknown at this time.

The following facts about Daniel's life are known:
  • Birth: In the 1850 census, Daniel is listed as aged 29, born in Tennessee. In the 1860 census, Daniel is listed as aged 39, born in Indiana. In the 1870 census, Daniel is listed as aged 50, born in Ohio.  His tombstone lists his age as 55 years, 5 months and 21 days.  With a death date of February 24, 1876, I've calculated his birth as September 3, 1820.
  • Marriage: Daniel married Elizabeth SHAW, daughter of William and Mary (HECK) SHAW on December 5, 1847 in Madison County, Indiana.  Madison County is a burned county, and the state database of marriages prior to 1850 does not list their marriage.
  • Census: In 1850, Daniel was head of household in Jackson Township, Madison County, Indiana.  His occupation was listed as farmer, and the value of real estate was $400.
  • Census: In 1860, Daniel was head of household in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana.  His occupation was listed as farmer, and the value of real estate was $4000, and his personal estate was valued at $1375.
  • Census: In 1870, Daniel was head of household in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana.  His occupation was listed as farmer, and the value of real estate was $14,500, and his personal estate was valued at $6031.
  • Death: Daniel died February 24, 1876 and is buried in the Howard Cemetery, Pipe Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana.  A memorial page is listed at FindAGrave
The following facts need further research and/or documentation to complete my research:
  • Birth: Need to be better able to nail down Daniel's place of birth.  Older brother, Thomas (b. 1817) and younger brother, George (b. 1823) both report being born in Ohio, so where did the Tennessee birth come from in the 1850 census record?  The 1850 census also lists his wife as being born in Tennessee, when other records list her birthplace as Ohio as well.
  • Obituary: While there may not be an obituary available, I need to search out Anderson, Indiana newspapers to see if one is available.
  • Land Records: There are doubtless land records that need to be explored in Madison County, Indiana that will flesh out the details of Daniel's life.

Ancestry of Daniel KING (1820-1876), Ahnentafel # 50 in my ancestry:

Ahnentafel # 100: William KING (c1790-1869); North Carolina>Wabash Co.,IN

William Shaw - 1850 Mortality Schedule Madison County, Indiana

Searching through some scanned documents, I came across an old photocopy from a book that I must have found years ago - not properly cited. My citation reads "1850 Mortality Schedule for State of Indiana" - no author, no date and no idea what repository I found this in.

Listed on page 47 is a typed list of the mortality schedule for Madison County, Indiana, the 68th District, page 30 that lists my ancestor, William Shaw, husband of Mary (Heck) Shaw.

William Shaw, age 50?, male, married, born in Pennsylvania, died September, Farmer, Bronchitis, sick 300 days.

Also listed on the same page was a Mary Shaul, 6 months, female, born Indiana, died December, Arcipales, sick 30 days.

I will need view the actually mortality schedule to obtain a proper source, but at least this gives me a clue as to when William died and the cause.

Where was Mary (Heck) Shaw born?

I was contacted by another fellow researcher who found my database at WorldConnect and questioned why I had stated that my ancestor, Mary (Heck) Shaw, was born in Ohio and not Bracken County, Kentucky, as had been stated by other researchers. Receiving this email made go back and take a look at the information that I had regarding Mary, and I found that I had gaps to fill.

My source for her birthplace as Ohio was an email from a third researcher - a source, but obviously not a primary source. Because I didn't know where this researcher had received their information, I began to look at what I did have on Mary.

According to my database, Mary was the daughter of Godfrey & Elizabeth (Kimmer) Heck, and had married William Shaw on August 29, 1822 in Brown County, Ohio. William died in Madison County, Indiana in 1849 and Mary died August 12, 1890 in Madison County, Indiana. Both William and Mary are buried in the Prewitt Cemetery in Pipe Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana. I have been to their graves and have posted photographs at FindAGrave for both of them.

Ok, so far I had a source for Mary's death date and birth date - her tombstone states that she died August 12, 1890 aged 87 years, 4 months and 27 days. If this age is correct, then subtracting backwards would give her a birth date of March 16, 1803. However, that doesn't give me the birthplace.

Noticing that I didn't have the 1850 census record sourced for Mary, I began browsing through the records until I found her - in Jackson Township, Madison County, Indiana. There I found her listed as a farmer with a real estate valued at $1500, born in Kentucky. All of the known children were living with her, exact for oldest daughter, Elizabeth, who had married Daniel King and was living right next door.

Ok, so now at least I had a source - whether or not this is the best source remains to be seen, but it is a starting point. I'll need to check other census records, etc. to see if I can collaborate the birthplace of Kentucky. Notice that daughter Elizabeth (Shaw) King is listed as being born in Tennessee because the census taker made a 'ditto' hash mark - under the Tennessee birthplace given for her husband, Daniel. This opens a whole other can of worms because I've seen other records for Daniel that place his birthplace as either Ohio or Indiana.

Nancy Byars Power (1802-1876)

Received an email from another researcher who found my WorldConnect database and sent me an addition for my records. So many times I have been given additional information and corrections to data through postings online.

David Alsup sent me information on the death date and place of Nancy (Byars) Power, my first cousin 6 times removed. She was the daughter of John and Catherine (Heck) Byars, and died August 14, 1876 in Bracken County, Kentucky. Many of the Heck family were in this area.

This is a family that I didn't have much information on, nor would I have time to dig into, but it is nice that someone took the time to add to and make corrections to my data.
