Obituary : Lydia (Rader) Haley

Evangelical Messenger, December 25, 1907, page 24

HALEY - Lydia Haley, nee Rader, was born July 1, 1826 in Ohio, and died in peace December 9, 1907, near Portland, Indiana.  In 1853 she and her husband came to Indiana, where they lived happily together until death separated them  seven years ago, when Mr. Haley died.  Six sons and six daughters grew to maturity, and one daughter died in infancy.  She was a model Christian mother.  She was a willing burden-bearer, never burdening others with her troubles.  She gave a smile rather than a frown.  She was a cheerful mother.  She was held in the highest esteem in the neighborhood where she resided for almost 55 years.  She was a life-long member of the Evangelical Association.  As a tribute to her we can say that she was faithful, her life exemplifying the virtues of her Christian profession.  The funeral sermon was preached by J.W. Metzner.  The Rev. J. Rees assisted in the services.

----
Lydia (RADER) HALEY was the widow of Sebastian HALEY (1823-1900), brother of 3x-great grandfather, George J. HALEY (1814-1888).  The names of the children who lived to maturity were: Mary Ann, George, John, Frederick, Samuel, Amanda, Elizabeth A., William, Sarah, Rebecca, Jacob and Allie M.  I do not know yet the name of the infant who died.  Lydia and her husband Sebastian were instrumental in founding the Mt. Zion church in Noble Township, Jay County, Indiana.

52 Weeks of Abundant Genealogy : Paid Genealogy Tools

Week 2 - Paid Genealogy Tools : Which paid genealogy tool do you appreciate the most?  What special features put it at the top of your list?  How can it help others with their genealogy research?

Without a doubt, the paid genealogy tool that I appreciate the most is my subscription to Ancestry.com.  For the money, there just isn't any research tool that has been as beneficial as my subscription.

For years, I avoided subscribing because of the cost - and now I don't know what I would do without it.  My subscription began after I had completed a research project for my MBA program, with Ancestry.com as the subject matter.  After exploring the subject, I was convinced to ask for a subscription for my birthday.  Though the subscription only renews annually, nearly every day I open a new "genealogical present" when I find records of ancestors and relatives online.

Not everything is online, and there are some databases at Ancestry that can be found for free in other locales.  But you cannot beat the aggregation of the information at your fingertips.  You have the ability to access the information anytime you have your computer running, and you can easily lose track of time exploring the databases.

Probably the features that put it at the top of the list right now for me are the census databases and the newspaper archives.  I have been digging into newspaper research on my blacksheep relatives, and use the census databases to track the movements of families across the country.

A subscription to Ancesty.com will not solve all of your research problems, but it will aid you by providing access to more records than you could conceivably access manually by traveling all across the country.  It is a wonderful tool to supplement on-site research at courthouses and libraries.

52 Weeks of Abundant Genealogy by Amy Coffin is a series of weekly blogging prompts (one for each week of 2012) that invite genealogists and others to discuss resources in the genealogy community including websites, applications, libraries, archives, genealogical societies and more.

Cousin Bait : The First Week

It's been one week since I started my "cousin bait" posts entitled "On This Day..."  As mentioned previously, the purpose of these posts is to generate leads, discussion and hopefully make some connections with new cousins.

Though these posts make my blog look a bit odd, they are also revealing to me how much more information I need to document.

Though it's way to early to tell if these will be successful, I did receive three nibbles this week - though not sure if they were directly related to these posts.  Instead of receiving comments directly on the posts, I received emails and comments on other older posts relating to the surname, which lead me to believe that the "On This Day..." post led to a search of the blog.  If so, that would make my efforts worth it.

I made contact with a distant cousin on the HECK line - whose line comes through Nicholas HECK (1811-1891), son of Godfrey.  My direct line is through Mary (HECK) SHAW (1803-1890), Nicholas' older sister.  We are in the beginning stages of trading information.

I also made contact with a distant cousin on the PIERCE line - whose line comes through Albert Orlando PIERCE (1839-1920), son of Francis.  My direct line is through Edmund G. PIERCE (1837-1875), Albert's older brother.

Another comment came from a distant cousin on the ALLEN line - whose line comes through John BARKER (1771-1849), son of Hannah Allen Barker.  My direct line is through Abner BARKER (1768-    ), John's older brother.

So far, the fishing is fine...

Black Sheep Sunday : New Harmony Bank Bandits Elude Capture

Source: Evansville Courier, March 11, 1925

NEW HARMONY BANK BANDITS ELUDE CAPTURE

Trail of Grey Sedan Lost Near Poseyville; Left State, Belief

New Harmony, March 11 - "Shoot to kill."  This order was flashed over the entire tri-state district yesterday following the failure of authorities in more than 24 hours to apprehend the four bank bandits who shortly before 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon held up and robbed the New Harmony Bank and Trust company of $9300 in cash and bonds.

The trail taken by the bandits, who fled from the small village in a large grey sedan, was picked up near Wadesville where the fleeing automobile was seen Tuesday afternoon.  From there it led north through Poseyville where it was lost.  Yesterday morning a report from King's Station in Gibson county said the bandit car had been seen there.

Left State Belief

Police authorities throughout the Pocket district, notified of the robbery within a few minutes after it had occurred, scoured nearby cities and towns and stationed guards on the highways throughout the Pocket.  Late last night, however, the bandits had not been apprehended and it was believed they had made good their escape into some adjoining state.

The latest clue possessed by authorities in regard to the movement of the large grey sedan and which has strengthened the belief that the bandits have left the state was received yesterday from Charles Chamberlain, a farmer living near Griffin. Chamberlain reported that he had been stopped by four men riding in such an automobile six miles south of Griffin on the Wabash river.  They asked him where they could get a boat across the river and handing him $80 in cash, telling him to keep still.

Heavily armed

The fact that the bandits were bold enough to stage a robbery in a town like New Harmony from which escape could easily be cut off, has led to the belief that they were desperate men and were prepared to shoot their way to freedom if cornered.  This fact, and the fact that they were all heavily armed, caused the warning to police officers in Pocket to take no chances in affecting a capture.

After a thorough check of the bank's funds yesterday, it was learned that the take was $ 9300  .  Of this amount, $ 4,800 was in cash, $300 in gold, and $4,000 in bonds.  All is amply covered by insurance.

This article is another in a series of stories of Indiana bank robberies by a group of robbers, led by my paternal cousin, Harry Pierpont (1902-1934).   Harry later became famous as part of the "Terror Gang" with John Dillinger.

52 Weeks of Abundant Genealogy : Blogs

Week 1 - Blogs : Blogging is a great way for genealogists to share information with family members, potential cousins and each other.  For which blog are you most thankful?  Is it one of the earliest blogs you read, or a current one?  What is special about the blog and why should others read it?

Right now, one of the blogs that I'm most thankful for is James Tanner's Genealogy Star.  His blog wasn't one of the first that I followed, but I picked it up quite awhile ago, and have enjoyed reading his posts ever since.

The reason I chose James' blog is that his posts extolling genealogists to digitize their information and get out from under the paper mountain has really struck a chord with me.  In particular, I recommend these posts: Observations on Technology and Genealogy and The Paper vs. Computer Dispute.

Though I'm not good at making or keeping New Year's resolutions, if I do have one goal for the upcoming year it will be to digitize and share the documents I have - and eliminate the unnecessary retention of photocopies I've obtained from libraries.  In my lifetime, I've gone from one extreme to the other; from file cabinets full of files, to binders with sheet protectors protecting photocopies!  In the future, I want to eliminate clutter and only save paper documents only when they are truly originals.

I highly recommend you add Genealogy Star to your blog reading.
