Exploratory Data Analysis : Carey W. Lambertson (1847-1918)

Carey W. Lambertson (1847-1918) was my maternal 3rd-great grandfather.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about him.

1. Vital Records

Carey was born April 29, 1847 in Butler County, Ohio1,2,3,4,5,6,7.

     1.1. Birth Certificate

The State of Ohio did not require birth registration at this time.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If Carey's birth was mentioned in a local newspaper, it has been lost to time.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am not aware of any surviving family Bible that would record the birth of Carey.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one can be located.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

I am not aware of any baptismal record for Carey, nor the church affiliation of the family at this time.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no indication that Carey was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

Carey married Clara E. Cook on October 1, 1869, according to my database.  I have the location as Butler County, Ohio, but a search of records in Butler and Montgomery Cos., Ohio have not yet located a record of where his marriage took place.  Will need to continue to search for verification of where they were married.

          1.2.1 Marriage Notice in Newspaper

Once I've verified the location of the marriage, will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if I can locate mention of their nuptials.

          1.2.2. Anniversary Notice

Carey and Clara's 25th wedding anniversary would have been on October 1, 1894.  Will need to search contemporary newspaper accounts to see if there was any mention of anniversary celebrations.

          1.2.3. Divorce Decree

There is no indication that Clara and Carey were ever divorced.

     1.3. Death Certificate

Carey died March 18, 1918 in Elwood, Madison County, Indiana8 of bronchial pnuemonia.  I do not yet have a copy of his death certificate.  Will need to add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.1. Obituary in Newspaper

Carey's obituary appeared in the March 18, 1918 edition of the Elwood Call-Leader8.  The obituary listed him as the son of John and Sarah Wilson Lambertson, and stated that he was a first cousin of President Wilson.  No evidence of a connection between the President and our Wilson family has been found.  The obituary mentioned that in the prior September, Carey had been in an automobile accident, which had lead to declining health.  His obituary was the subject of a previous post.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Will need to search the local historical society to see if they have funeral home records that might shed some light on Carey's funeral.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Carey's tombstone in the Elwood City Cemetery has been photographed9.  A link to his memorial page at FindAGrave is located here.

Postal Letter Sorter

My maternal grandfather, William Lee "Johnny Bill" Wright (1919-1973) worked for the post office.  My mom took these pictures at the Pony Express Museum because they reminded her of a story about her dad:

I took these pictures at the Pony Express Museum because they reminded me of the clerk letter sorter that my dad had to use.  It was about half this size.  He had a long box of cards and he would practice sorting the cards into the pigeon holes.  He had to take a test yearly to see how fast he could sort the mail and not make a mistake.  I think he was given about 100 letters and could only miss less than 5? in about a minute.  I thought you would like this information.

Young Family Reunion, 1911

Steuben Republican
Angola, Indiana
August 16, 1911, page 6
Found this mention of the Young family reunion at Newspapers.com from 1911. This was the 10th annual reunion of the family.  I recognize many of the names, but there are quite a few that I need to research to see how they fit into the family.

YOUNG REUNION

The tenth annual meeting of the Young families was held at the pleasant home of George Straw at Clearlake, Indiana, August 10, 1911.  All nature seemed to aid in the pleasure of the visits, bathing, boating and other sports for the young, and the cheerful greetings of the older ones filled up the forenoon, and in the afternoon business, speeches, etc.  There were six deaths and eight births during last year.  The next reunion will be held at Carey, Ohio, about the 15th of August, 1912.

The following persons gave interesting talks: L.I.C. Young, Rev. Phillip Lemasters, Miles Mulholand, Rev. G.W. Staley, Chauncey Young, Mary J. Young, S.D. Young, L.W. Lemasters, Sarah Staley and J.W. Young.  There were fifty-one who came from a distance: Mrs. Jennie Brown, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; Mrs. Blanche Foster and daughter, of Unity, Maine; S.D. Young and wife, Rev. G.W. Staley and wife, J.W. Young, wife and son. Grant Shaley, wife and daughter, Mrs. Dill and daughter and Bessie Murphy of Anna, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Jas. G. Young and daughter, of Belle Center, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Miles Mulholland and daughter, Mrs. E. Brashears and Mrs. Essie Rangers, of Carey, Ohio; W.F. Huber and wife, V.D. Huber, wife and daughter and son, of Green Springs, Ohio; Mrs. Delilah Young, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Cole and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James Smith and Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Hutchins, of Fremont, Ohio; Rev. Phillip Lemasters of Spencerville, Ohio; Mrs. Edith Meinholtz and daughter, of Oklahoma; L.W. Lemasters of Jay county, Indiana; Geo. Ralston and family, (by auto) from Sherwood, Michigan.  There were 103 enjoyed a very satisfying dinner of all good things to tickle the pallet, also ice cream and cake at time of dispersing.

----
Of those listed in this announcement, the L.W. Lemasters listed is my paternal 2nd-great grandfather, Luman Walker Lemasters Jr. (1842-1931), son of Rev. Luman Walker and Nancy (Young) Lemasters.  The Rev. Phillip Lemasters (1836-1915)  listed is his brother.  The Edith Meinholtz of Oklahoma is Edith Mabel (LeMasters) Meinholtz (1879-1949), daughter of Luman Walker and Mary Keziah (Chew) LeMasters.  The daughter mentioned would be Mary Wilhelmina Meinholtz (1911-1935), who had just been born in February of 1911, one of the births mentioned during the year.

The L.I.C. Young who gave a talk was Lewis I. Charles Young (1837-   ) who later wrote a genealogy of the Young family.  He was the son of Charles and Nancy (Scothorn) Young.

The Miles Mulholland who gave a talk was the son of Hugh and Mary (Young) Mulholland.  This Mary Young was the daughter of Phillip and Nancy Ann (McLane) Young.

The members of the Staley family are not yet in my database, but may be descendants of Catherine Young and John Staley.  Catherine (1813-1898) was the daughter of Phillip and Nancy Ann (McLane) Young.

I have a lot more research to do on this rather extensive family, but it was nice to find mention of the attendees at this family reunion.

Goofing with the Grandkids

Time sure does have a way of getting away from you when you least expect it, and all my good intentions of keeping up with blog posts on family history have been for naught.  But life is more than just genealogy, so today I want to share a couple of pictures of the grandkids.

If only they lived closer we could see each other more, but I'm grateful for the time I do have.  Last weekend, Eileen and I went down and spent some time with Corinne and the kids and had a good time.  Of course, grandpa spoiled them all with some ice cream after a long shopping trip.

Miss Piper enjoyed taking advantage of my phone and tried to make her own selfies while we were waiting on mom to pick out some shoes at Shoe Carnival.

Baby Brayden was happy as could be and cute as a button.  At only 3 months, he's really growing - he'll be a big boy!

Miss Piper found a way to keep herself entertained while we are the thrift store. She has a very good imagination!

Love these two and hope that someday they will pick up the family history research bug!  In the meantime, will just let them be adorable kids.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

If Edmund's birth was mentioned in a local newspaper, it has been lost to time.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

I am not aware of any surviving family Bible that would record the birth of Edmund.  Will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that one can be located.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

I am not aware of any bapitsmal record for Edmund, nor the church affiliation of the family at the time.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for future research trips.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

There is no indication that Edmund was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage License

Edmund married Lydia P. Duell on October 17, 1858 in Preble County, Ohio1,2.  Lydia was the daughter of Joshua and Abigail (Borton) Duell.  She was born March 26, 1838 in Pilesgrove, New Jersey and died September 14, 18603.  They had no known children.

Edmund married secondly to Catherine Groenendyke on May 5, 18641 in Madison County, Indiana.  Catherine was the daughter of Elias and Nancy (Jenkins) Groenendyke.  She was born February 4, 1843 in Madison County, Indiana and died December 10, 1913 in Madison County, Indiana.  They raised 5 children in Madison County, Indiana.

          1.3.2. Funeral Home Records

Will need to search the local historical society to see if they have records of funeral homes that might shed some light on Edmund's funeral.  Will add this to my list of "to-do" items for my next research trip.

          1.3.3. Tombstone Photograph

Edmund's tombstone in the Maplewood Cemetery in Anderson, Madison County, Indiana4 has been photographed.  A link to his memorial page at FindAGrave is here.

          2.1.2. 1860 Federal Census

I have not yet located Edmund in the 1860 federal census.  He should be living in Preble County, Ohio.  He was married two years earlier in that same county.  His wife, Lydia, died in 1860 as well.  Will continue to search for the record.

          2.1.3. 1850 Federal Census

There is a record of an Edmund Pierce, age 13, living in Wayne County, Indiana living in the James Walker household in Washington Township, Wayne County, Indiana.  This is where I would expect to find the Pierce family, but the rest of the family has not been found.  I do not know of any relationship with the Walker family.  Much more research needs to be done to locate Edmund's father, Francis, and the rest of the family in the 1850 census.

     2.2. State Census Records

Shaky Leaves : Chesley Franklin LeMaster (1890-1960)

Chesley Franklin LeMaster (1890-1960) was my paternal granduncle, the son of Luman Cooper and Barbara Isabel (Wehrly) LeMaster.  Ancestry.com is currently showing 8 hints from historical records for him in my LeMaster and Allied Families Member Tree.

I have ignored the Ancestry Member Tree hints for now and will concentrate on the records.

One of the databases is U.S., FindAGrave Index, which leads to his memorial page.

Name:Chesley F. LeMaster
Birth Date:1890
Death Date:1960
Cemetery:Salamonia Cemetery
Burial or Cremation Place:Salamonia, Jay County, Indiana, USA
Has Bio?:N
Spouse:Clara L. LeMaster
Children:Dale W. LeMaster
URL:http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-...

Looks like his memorial page needs some updating and biographical information submitted.

In the 1940 census of Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, Chesley, age 47, was renting a farm for $8 per month.  The household consisted of his wife Clara, age 45 born Indiana; son Ralph, age 17 born Indiana; son Dale, age 12 born Indiana; and daughter Patty Lou age 7 born Indiana.  Two older children were not in the household, daughter Doris was married in 1935 and son Donald was married in 1932.

In the 1930 census of Madison Township, Jay County, Indiana, he was enumerated as "Chessley Leamaster", age 39, renting a farm.  The household consisted of Clara, age 35 born Indiana; son Donald, age 16 born Indiana; daughter Dora, age 15 born Indiana; son Ralph, age 7 born Indiana; and son Dale, age 2 born in Indiana.

1930 US Census, Jay County, Indiana, population schedule, Madison Township, enumeration district (ED) 38-8, SD 5, sheet 9A, dwelling 204, family 204, ; digital images, Ancestry.com (www.ancestry.com : accessed 9 August 2015); National Archives, Washington D.C..

I was surprised that I didn't already have these census records in my RootsMagic database.  I've since updated his file.

Another hint that was provided listed the exact date of his birth (which I already had), and provided the location of his birth record with the Jay County Health Department.

One new record that I didn't have sourced in my database was the record of his draft registration during World War I.  He registered on June 5, 1917 in Midland, Midland County, Michigan.  He was a laborer with the Dow Chemical Company in Midland, was married with two children.
