Sentimental Sunday : News and Notes

The Tiger's Tale was our student newspaper at Alexandria-Monroe High School in Alexandria, Indiana.  I came across this story in a copy of the newspaper that I had saved from my school days.  Am planning to donate the copies of the newspaper along with other photographs to the local historical society.

I can remember the computer class at Ball State University, and believe there is a photograph of the whole group somewhere.  At the time, I was promised that completing the course would earn me some college credit.  However, the course never appeared on my college transcripts.

1756 - Ann CHAMNESS born in Orange County, North Carolina.  Ann was the daughter of Anthony CHAMNESS and Sarah COLE.

1779 - Reuben TAYLOR born.  Reuben was the son of James TAYLOR and Ann HUBBARD.

1785 - Rachel SUMNER born in Surry County, North Carolina.  Rachel was the daughter of Bowater SUMNER and Rebeckah BURRAS.

1792 - George TAYLOR died.  George was the son of James TAYLOR and Martha THOMPSON.

1802 - Anna BOND married Abram BUNKER.  Anna was the daughter of Edward BOND and Elizabeth Ann MILLS.

1814 - John WRIGHT born in Pleasant Township, Brown County, Ohio.  John was the son of George WRIGHT and Elizabeth ROBINS.  John was my 4x-great grandfather.

1818 - John HECK married Catherine HECK in Bracken County, Kentucky.  John was the son of Jacob HECK and Elizabeth ________.

1839 - John METZNER married Catharine YOUNG in Newark, Licking County, Ohio.  John was the son of Jasper METZNER and Hannah REISENBURG.  Catharine was the daughter of Nicholas YOUNG and Salome ________.  They were my 3x-great grandparents.

1848 - Franklin MILLHOUS born near Colerain, Ohio.  Franklin was the son of Joshua Vickers MILLHOUS and Elizabeth Price GRIFFITH.

1849 - Matilda POE married William SHAWVER in Morgan County, Indiana.  Matilda was the daughter of John W. POE and Elizabeth RAINS.

1862 - Jesse BOND died.  Jesse was the son of Edward BOND and Elizabeth Ann MILLS.

1865 - Silas HIATT died.  Silas was the son of William HIATT and Charity WILLIAMS.

1869 - Townsend HEATON married Nancy Jane HALE in Schuyler County, Missouri.  Townsend was the son of James R. HEATON and Elizabeth JACOBS.

1872 - Elijah CHEW died.  Elijah was the son of Nathaniel CHEW and Sarah SPRINGER.

1873 - Israel LEE born.  Israel was the son of William M. LEE and Elizabeth BROWN.

1877 - John Hubert SWAFFORD born.  John was the son of John Hubert SWAFFORD and Eliza WOODEN.

1893 - Mary Adoline SWAFFORD born in Brunswick, Missouri.  Mary was the daughter of Landon Marcellus SWAFFORD and Bertie Belle MARSH.

1906 - Albert SWAFFORD married Della Mae BURGESS in Ray County, Missouri.  Albert was the son of Allen Aaron SWAFFORD and Meda LILES.

1907 - Jesse Clarence LEE married Hattie Deana SMART.  Jesse was the son of William Burrell LEE and Margaret Jane SWAFFORD.

1932 - George COOK died in Larned, Pawnee County, Kansas.  George was the son of George COOK and Matilda JACOBS.

1763 - Mary BEALS died in York County, Pennsylvania.  Mary was the daughter of John BROOKSBY and Mary ________.

1773 - Amy CHEW died in Gloucester County, New Jersey.  Amy was the daughter of John DRIVER and Sarah ________.  Amy was my 7x-great grandmother.

1813 - Samuel WOOLSTON died in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Samuel was the son of Samuel WOOLSTON and Cyllania WOOLSTON.  Samuel was my 5x-great grandfather.

1817 - Samuel MILLIKAN died in Randolph County, North Carolina.  Samuel was the son of William MILLIKAN and Jane WHITE.  Samuel was my 7x-great grandfather.

1819 - Stephen HUNT married Mary HUSSEY in Guilford County, North Carolina.  Stephen was the son of Eleazer HUNT and Lydia WORLEY.

1822 - Sarah Ann H. DEACON born in Burlington County, New Jersey.  Sarah was the daughter of Joseph DEACON and Beulah HAINES.

1842 - Henry METZNER born in Licking County, Ohio.  Henry was the son of John METZNER and Catharine YOUNG.

1845 - Willard MAXSON born in Muscatine County, Iowa.  Willard was the son of William MAXSON and Delilah BOWLAND.

1848 - Louis Napoleon METZNER born in St. Louisville, Licking County, Ohio.  Louis was the son of John METZNER and Catharine YOUNG.

1874 - Jane Elizabeth McPHEETERS died.  Jane was the daughter of William McPHEETERS and Margaret Ann Curry McDANIEL.

1879 - Russell BRITTON born.  Russell was the son of Josiah Cole BRITTON and Elenor Creveling EWING.

1880 - Abraham Leander SHERRICK married Ruth M. THOMAS in Ashland County, Ohio.  Abraham was the son of David SHERRICK and Susan JACOBS.

1887 - Andrew Frank HALEY married Emma Catherine LEONARD in Jay County, Indiana.  Andrew was the son of George Washington HALEY and Mary Jane SHERRICK.

1888 - Lucy Grace SWAFFORD born.  Lucy was the daughter of Samuel Richard SWAFFORD and Susan Isabell McGAUGH.

1898 - Opal Woolston CHEW born.  Opal was the daughter of William Anderson CHEW and Emma Susan STRAIGHT.

1906 - Frank Edwin WEHRLY born.  Frank was the son of Alva Monroe WEHRLY and Emma C. YAEGER.

1912 - Ulysses Grant SWAFFORD married Mary GRAHAM in Jasper, Marion County, Tennessee.  Ulysses was the son of James Andrew SWAFFORD and Rebecca Jane SHERRILL.

1655 - Robert BURDICK married Ruth HUBBARD in Newport, Rhode Island.  Ruth was the daughter of Samuel HUBBARD and Tacy COOPER.  They were my 9x-great grandparents.

1678 - Ebenezer CHENEY born in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.  Ebenezer was the son of Thomas CHENEY and Jane ATKINSON.

1719 - Barbara ANTONIDES married Dirck VAN VECHTE.  Barbara was the daughter of Vincentius ANTONIDES and Anatie VAN COUVENHAVEN.

1738 - Ruth FESSENDEN married John HUNT in Boston, Massachusetts.  Ruth was the daughter of William FESSENDEN and Martha WYETH.

1778 - Prudence HIATT born in Guilford County, North Carolina.  Prudence was the daughter of William HIATT and Charity WILLIAMS.

1786 - Lydia BEALS married Aaron TYSON.  Lydia was the daughter of William BEALS and Rachel GREEN.

1793 - Henry KEENEY born.  Henry was the son of John S. KEENEY and Magdalena PETRY.

1796 - Joseph SUMNER married Abigail JESSOP.  Joseph was the son of Thomas SUMNER and Hannah HIATT.

1797 - Catherine MAXSON born in New Salem, Virginia.  Catherine was the daughter of Zebulon MAXSON and Mary DAVIS.

1817 - William MILLS born.  William was the son of William MILLS and Sarah MAULSBY.

1829 - Samuel J. PEPPER born.  Samuel was the son of William PEPPER and Eliza PIERCE.

1834 - Ezra BUCHER born.  Ezra was the son of Nicholas BUCHER and Catherine PETRY.

1839 - Nancy A. SWAFFORD born in Bledsoe County, Tennessee.  Nancy was the daughter of Aaron SWAFFORD and Maria MILLS.

1844 - Levi W. PETRY born in Preble County, Ohio.  Levi was the son of Charles PETRY and Susannah WEHRLY.

1845 - William P. WEHRLY born in Preble County, Ohio.  William was the son of Johannes WEHRLY and Barbara PETRY.  William was my 2x-great grandfather.

1847 - Stephen M. YOUNG married Mary WOODRUFF.  Stephen was the son of Phillip YOUNG and Nancy Ann McLANE.

1848 - Sarah Margaret BECKETT born in Polk County, Iowa.  Sarah was the daughter of Lemuel Daugherty BECKETT and Sarah Springer CHEW.

1855 - William Aaron SWAFFORD born.  William was the son of John Daniel SWAFFORD and Mary Elizabeth KEARLEY.

1856 - William A. PENISTEN born.  William was the son of George PENISTEN and Amanda Melvina CAWGILL.

1856 - Thomas SWAFFORD died in Bledsoe County, Tennessee.  Thomas was the son of Peter James SWAFFORD and Rennie HOWARD.

1867 - Rufus Aaron LEE born.  Rufus was the son of Robert E. LEE and Frances A. CROWLEY.

1872 - John Elmer PETRY died in Jay County, Indiana.  John was the son of Levi W. PETRY and Susannah COFFMAN.

1879 - Wilbur E. YOUNG born.  Wilbur was the son of Chauncey YOUNG and Ellen HUSS.

1887 - Ira F. HENDRIXSON died in Brown County, Ohio.  Ira was the son of Allen HENDRIXSON and Sarah Ann WRIGHT.

1892 - Emma Dorothy Sophie RITT married Henry Herman BISHOFF in Vanderburgh County, Indiana.  Emma was the daughter of Karl Ludwig RITT and Anna Maria Louisa Catherine KAHRE.

1895 - James WRIGHT married Clara B. HICKS in Madison County, Indiana.  James was the son of Joseph W. WRIGHT and Rebecca Ann HEATON.

1899 - Orpha Mable HALEY died in Jay County, Indiana.  Orpha was the daughter of Eli Weldon HALEY and Cora Belle METZNER.

1911 - Lula Iona DAVIS died.  Lula was the daughter of Stillman Coon DAVIS and Keziah DAVIS.

1935 - Peter SCHAEFFER died in Evansville, Vanderburgh County, Indiana.  Peter was the son of Charles SCHAEFFER and Mary Victoria RIEBER.

Exploratory Data Analysis : William Francis Pierce (1865-1950)

William Francis Pierce (1865-1950) was my maternal 2nd-great grandfather.  What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have discovered about him.

1. Vital Records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

          William was born July 10, 1865 in Frankton, Madison County, Indiana¹.

          The State of Indiana did not require birth certificates prior to 1907.

          1.1.1. Birth Notice in Newspaper

               I have not been able to locate any contemporary accounts of William's birth.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

               I am not aware of any surviving Bible record of the Pierce family.  I will continue to reach out to extended family in hopes that such a record does exist.

          1.1.3. Baptismal Record

               I am not aware of any baptismal record for William at this time, nor am I aware of the family's church affiliation.  Later in life, they were members of the Methodist church.

          1.1.4. Adoption Record

               There is no indication that William was adopted.

     1.2. Marriage license

          William married on January 14, 1892 in Madison County, Indiana to Clara Penisten².

          William married on March 4, 1909 in Madison County, Indiana to Vida Maddox³.

          Their marriage license was the subject of a previous post.

          1.2.1. Marriage notice in newspaper

               Will need to search out contemporary newspapers to see if mention was made of William's marriages.  Have added this to my research "to-do" list.

          1.2.2. Anniversary notice

               William and Vida's 25th wedding anniversary would have been March 4, 1934.  Need to search local newspapers to see if mention was made.

          1.2.3. Divorce decree

               There is no indication of any divorce by William from either wife.

     1.3. Death Certificate

          William died September 21, 1950 in Alexandria, Madison County, Indiana¹.  The cause of death listed in his obituary was stroke. I need to obtain a copy of his death certificate from the Madison County Health Department.

          1.3.1. Obituary in newspaper

               William's obituary was published in the September 21, 1950 edition of the Alexandria, Indiana Times-Tribune¹.

               Need to search out other local newspapers to see if his death was also mentioned in their publications.

          1.3.2. Funeral home records

               According to his obituary, the funeral arrangements were handled by the Davis and Strickler funeral home.  Need to search at the local historical society to see if they have any of the records.

          1.3.3. Tombstone photograph

               William's tombstone in the Maplewood Cemetery in Anderson, Indiana has been photographed.

               The tombstone lists him as "William F. 1865-1950".

     2.1. Federal Census Records

          2.1.1. 1930 Federal Census

               On April 24, 1930, William was enumerated in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana⁴, as William Pierce, age 64, married Farmer born in Indiana.  He was aged 25 at the time of his first marriage.  He could read and write and spoke English.  Both of his parents were born in Indiana.  He owned his own home.

          2.1.2. 1920 Federal Census

               On January 23, 1920, William was enumerated in Frankton, Lafayette Township, Madison County, Indiana⁵, as William F. Pierce, age 53, married, Farmer born in Indiana.  Both of his parents were born in Indiana.  He could read and write and speak English.  He owned his home and it was mortgaged.

          2.1.3. 1910 Federal Census

               On April 22, 1910, William was enumerated in Lafayette Township, Madison County, Indiana⁶, as W.F. Pierce, age 45, farmer, born in Indiana.  Both of his parents were born in Indiana.  He had been married for 1 year, and it was his second marriage.  He owned his home and it was mortgaged.

          2.1.4. 1900 Federal Census

               On June 15, 1900, William was enumerated in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana⁷, as William F. Pierce, age 35, born July 1866 in Indiana, farmer.  Both of his parents were born in Indiana. He had been married for 8 years. He could read and write and speak English.

          2.1.5. 1880 Federal Census

               On June 3, 1880, William was enumerated in the Catharine Pierce household in Lafayette Township, Madison County, Indiana⁸, as William Pierce, age 14, son, born in Indiana.  He worked on the farm and had attended school within the year.  Both parents were listed as being born in Indiana.

          2.1.6. 1870 Federal Census

               On July 15, 1870, William was enumerated in the E.G. Pierce household in Lafayette Township, Madison County, Indiana⁹, as W.F. Pierce, age 4, born in Indiana.

     2.2. State Census Records

          The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1921.  These, however, were merely for the purposes of determining legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

          I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what light it might shed on the Pierce family farm.

3. Military Records

     3.1. Draft Registration

          William was too old to be included in the draft for World War I or World War II.  He would have been subject to the draft for the Spanish-American War.

     3.2. Pension Records

          Not applicable, as I have found no evidence that William served in the military.

     3.3. Service Records

          Not applicable, as I have found no evidence that William served in the military.

4. Land Records

     4.1. Deed Records

          Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Madison County, Indiana.  Have added this to my "to-do" list on my next research trip.

     4.2. Plat map / county map

          Madison County published a plat map in 1880, 1891, 1893, 1901, 1910, 1915, 1921, 1923, 1931 and 1940 that might be relevant to my search for the Pierce family.

5. Supplemental Records

     Supplemental records available to search for William include county/city directories, court records and will and probate records.  Have added these to my "to-do" list for my next research trip into Madison County.

1809 - Asa Smith CHEW died.  Asa was the son of Elisha Dunham CHEW and Mary HERITAGE.

1824 - John GROENENDYKE died in Eugene Township, Vermillion County, Illinois.  John was the son of Johannes GROENENDYKE and Sarah Ann LAKE.

1857 - Joseph W. WRIGHT married Rebecca Ann HEATON in Schuyler County, Missouri.  Joseph was the son of John WRIGHT and Anna WARDLOW.  Rebecca was the daughter of James R. HEATON and Elizabeth JACOBS.  They were my 3x-great grandparents.

1861 - Alice L. HADLEY born in Mooresville, Morgan County, Indiana.  Alice was the daughter of Zimri HADLEY and Luretha Jane BROWN.

1874 - Sarah Fidelia CHEW married David ELEY in Marshall County, Indiana.  Sarah was the daughter of Ezekiel Cooper CHEW and Caroline Bishop WOOLSTON.

1883 - Jason Perry PROCTOR born.  Jason was the son of John Henry PROCTOR and Sarah Elizabeth BOYER.

1890 - Alzina FISHER died in Henderson, Iowa.  Alzina was the daughter of George FISHER and Hannah WRIGHT.

1905 - Ella E. SYFERT married Walter W. WOOD.  Ella was the daughter of George B. SYFERT and Margaret Ann McLANE.

1914 - David KING died in Frankton, Madison County, Indiana.  David was the son of Daniel KING and Elizabeth SHAW.

1918 - Robert Aron SWAFFORD died in Ray County, Missouri.  Robert was the son of Allen Aaron SWAFFORD and Anna S. COVEY.

1928 - Thomas John RICHARDS died.  Thomas was the son of John Thomas RICHARDS and Mary Jane CROCKETT.

1972 - Myra Christina PEFLEY died in Atlanta, Hamilton County, Indiana.  Myra was the daughter of Albert Duffey PEFLEY and Sarah May PEEPLES.

1875 - Merrick C. HALEY born in Claridon Township, Marion County, Ohio.  Merrick was the son of William HALEY and Jane Elizabeth OWEN.

1889 - Mose Thompson TOLLETT born.  Mose was the son of Major C. TOLLETT and Amanda SWAFFORD.

1890 - Edith Alene MAXON born in Mt. Morris, Greene County, Pennsylvania.  Edith was the daughter of John Winfield MAXON and Pleasant Jane BAREMORE.

Exploratory Data Analysis: Clara (Penisten) Pierce (1869-1906)

Clara (Penisten) Pierce (1869-1906) was my maternal 2nd-great grandmother. What follows is an exploratory analysis of the biographical data I have collected about her.

1. Vital Records

     1.1. Birth Certificate

          Clara was born in March of 1869 in Madison County, Indiana¹.  I do not currently have an exact date of birth.

          The State of Indiana began requiring birth certificates in 1907, though many counties have birth records going back as far as 1880.

               I have not been able to locate any contemporary newspaper accounts of Clara's birth.

          1.1.2. Bible Record

               I am not aware of any surviving Bible record of the Penisten family.  Will continue to reach out to collateral relatives in hopes of discovering one.

     1.3. Death Certificate

          Clara died September 26, 1906 in Lafayette Township, Madison County, Indiana.  I did not realize that I did not have a copy of her death certificate.  Will need to request that from the Madison County Health Department on my next research trip.

          1.3.1. Obituary in newspaper

               Clara's obituary appeared in the Alexandria Times-Tribune.  I have transcribed it in my database but did not source it.  Need to go back and update my records for the date and publication information.

               I also need to search in other local newspapers to see if her death was mentioned.

          1.3.2. Funeral home records

               I need to search at the local historical society to see if there are any surviving funeral home records that would mention her.  The brief obituary I do have did not mention which funeral home handled the arrangements.

               For some reason, I do not have a photograph of Clara's tombstone in my database.  Will need to rectify that situation soon.

          2.1.1. 1900 Federal Census

               On June 15, 1900, Clara appeared in the William F. Pierce household in Monroe Township, Madison County, Indiana¹ as Clara Pierce, wife, born March 1869 in Indiana.  She was 31 years old, had been married for 8 years, and was the mother of 5 children, 3 of whom were still living.  Her father and mother were both born in Indiana.  She could read and write and spoke English.

          2.1.2. 1880 Federal Census

               On June 15, 1880, Clara was enumerated in the John Penniston household in Fall Creek Township, Madison County, Indiana³, as  Clara A. Penniston, age 12, born in Indiana.  Both of her parents were born in Indiana. She had attended school within the year and could read and write.

          2.1.3. 1870 Federal Census

               I have not yet discovered the Penisten family in the 1870 census.  They should be in Madison County, Indiana, along with other members of the family, who appear in Richland Township.  Will need to conduct a line-by-line review of the Madison County, Indiana census.

     2.2. State Census Records

          The State of Indiana conducted state census in 1853, 1857, 1871, 1877, 1883, 1889, 1901, 1913, 1919 and 1921.  These, however, were merely for the purpose of determining legislative apportionment.

     2.3. Agricultural Census Records

          I have not yet investigated these types of census records to see what light might be shed on the Penisten or Pierce family farm.

     3.1. Draft Registration

          Not applicable, as Clara was female.

     3.2. Pension Records

          I am not aware of any military service by father or husband that would have made Clara eligible to receive a military pension.

     4.1. Deed Records

          Deed records need to be thoroughly searched in Madison County, Indiana.  All evidence indicates that Clara spent her entire adult live in Madison County, Indiana.

     4.2. Plat map / county map

          Madison County published a plat map in 1880, 1891, 1893, 1901, 1910, 1915, 1921, 1923, 1931 and 1940 that might be relevant for my search for Clara and the Penisten and Pierce families.

1945 - Patricia Lou LeMASTER died in Portland, Jay County, Indiana.  Patricia was the daughter of Chesley Franklin LeMASTER and Clara Louise BURKEY.

Sentimental Sunday : Senior Will

I, Travis J. LeMaster, of the senior class of 1987, being of questionable mind and unexplained body, do make, and publish, and declare the following to be my senior will.

To my little brother, Jason, I leave the legacy of the the nickname "Moe," and the uncanny ability to pass courses without doing any serious work.

To Chuck Tuite, I leave my collection of German folkmusic.

To Glenn Smock and Mark Naselroad, I leave my wrestling shoes (one for each).

To the senior class of 1988, I leave the responsibility of keeping S.U.R.F.F. alive and well.

To Ronnie Ross, I leave my "mooching" abilities, and to Lori Hannah, I leave my brains (she'll need some).

To Mike Lewis, I leave my typing skills, and to the rest of the study body, I leave my blessings and an open invitation to party with me at Ball State.

This was my "Senior Will" as published in the Tiger's Tale, the school newspaper of Alexandria-Monroe High School.  I came across this while looking for pictures for my 25th class reunion.

S.U.R.F.F. stood for "Student's United Revolutionary Freedom Fighters" and was a spoof that was done for the yearbook.  Featuring a para-military takeover of the school, complete with camo and weapons, it was something that would not be tolerated in today's post-Columbine world.
