S.A. Armstrong, Minister

This record of the marriage of Charles E. Bickel and Nora F. Chew was located at the Jay County Historical Society in Portland, Indiana.

I do not yet know for sure how Nora ties into my Chew family.  I believe that she might be the Nora who was the daughter of Charles Alexander West Chew and Rebecca F. Shumaker, but without the return I do not have any other evidence.  My Nora was born August 1882, so would be right around 20 years old if they are the same person.

Ethel A. Chew was my paternal first cousin three times removed.  Her husband's middle name was Franklin, per World War I draft records.  The handwriting was a bit difficult to make out whether or not his middle initial was a "T" or an "F".

Thanks to this record, I now have James' parents as well as the place of birth for Ethel, New Weston in Darke County, Ohio.

I do not know the significance of the minister or the denomination at this time.

This record of the marriage of Virgil C. Chew and Esther V. Abel was located at the Jay County Historical Society in Portland, Indiana.

I have not yet been able to connect this Virgil C. Chew to other members of my family in the Salamonia area.  I've written about this in a previous post.

The mention of this Virgil's father being a Virgil C. Chew as well is suspect.  I know of no other similar named individuals in the area at the time.  He may well be a child of one of the Chews, but I need to get into Jay County courthouse and see if there are any court records.
